This review is not for the hotel portion of their operation but for their bar/catering. We attended a birthday party hosted in their first floor bar & parlor rooms (and their outside balcony). The spaces are gorgeous - the architectural detail of the rooms is beautiful. The waitress who served this group of 30-40 people did a fantastic job getting a thirsty group their drinks. She was super friendly and very helpful. The selection of both hot and cold appetizers was very tasty. The cocktails we had were top-notch and served in cut glassware. It was a high end affair. My husband and I were offering an adventure and he wanted to try Madison, Wisconsin for biking around the lakes and hiking. The weather was stunning and Mansion Hill Inn was a phenomenal choice. Every single concierge at the Inn were charming, delightful and accommodating. Our room was spectacular. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. Conversation with the several concierges was particularly enjoyable. The restaurants in Madison were truly incredible experiences. Each night we had the finest food. We were then off to our next adventure, to be cheerleaders for our son running in the Chicago marathon. What a delightful city you have, and Mansion Hill Inn is the premier bed-and-breakfast to choose. I wouldn't recommend any other location. read more

Attended a jazz night here and it was SO much fun!! The inside is so beautiful. Not to mention the 3 level terrace. The views are awesome. For a small entry fee you get to enjoy jazz and light snacks. Will definitely be attending more events here and can't wait to book a stay :) read more

LOVED Mansion Hill Inn! Stayed over 4th of July weekend 2018 and was delighted by the cool old mansion vibe, comfortable accommodations and SUPER SERVICE delivered throughout the entire stay by Terrance, the ace innkeeper. Our room was comfortable (Room 6), but small. The one thing I found a bit annoying was the hallway lights shining brightly around the gaps in the door at night. I unscrewed the bulb that was inches away directly outside the door and that helped quite a bit. The bathroom was roomy and the shower awesome - very spacious and drenching water flowed freely! The highlights of our stay were the complimentary B-cycle cards (AWESOME!) and the genuine friendliness and attentiveness of Terrance. MHI is NOT a hotel, it's an inn and it's got a much different feel than that of a faceless hotel. I enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a low-key, relaxing place to stay. 5 stars for Terrance and The Mansion Hill Inn! read more

A cozy and quiet luxury B&B/inn located a few blocks from the capital square and not far from Langdon St and the University. Built in 1857 and rescued and restored to its current brilliance by Trek Bicycle scion, this place is my new favorite Madison retreat. We regularly visit Madison from Minneapolis and have stayed in most of its hotels-especially those close to the University . This place dripping in creature comforts sets a new high bar. Pros: -Gorgeous public spaces on the first floor-restored to 1880s brilliance and they even have a nice bar (not original) tucked into the former parlor serving beer and wine. -our room-7-(out of a total of 10) located on the second floor was massive with cheery classical decorations and all the modern features expected in a high-end property including a gas fireplace, large outside patio, soaring windows making the room bright and airy, large comfy sleigh -style king bed -bathroom was also huge and in room 7 hidden behind a secret wall in the floor to ceiling bookcase. The bathroom had its own separate heat/A/C control and featured a heated floor-very nice! Their were tons of windows and a large shower with a rain shower shower head. -fresh chocolate chip cookies were left on the bed when we returned from dinner-very yummy -free snacks are available in the bar including mixed nuts, m&m's, almonds, and chocolate covered raisins-plus they put our cookies later in the day. -top flight service from the staff from check in to check out -room includes breakfast (although we didn't partake) Opportunities: -it's an older house in a busy neighborhood so parking is tricky on the street. They have three spots next to the house off street (first come first serve) that are valet spots and it is $10 per night -they also have some spaces a few blocks away. Seems like parking should be included to me. -probably not a place for an older person-at least for rooms 6-10 as the only way up is a steep spiral staircase that would be a challenge for some. We always enjoy our stays at Mansion Hill Inn. We get to Madison 2-3 times a year, and although we don't always stay here (it's on the pricier side), it's definitely in our top 2 hotels in Madison. The Inn is charming, the rooms are comfy and well appointed, and the innkeepers are such nice people. Turndown service includes fresh cookies, and a handwritten note. Such a cute, thoughtful touch. The Mansion Hill Inn is the best! The service is top notch. All the employees go the extra mile to make sure your stay is as pleasant as possible. The amenities are great. In the evening after dinner, when we got back to our room, we had a handwritten note thanking us for staying with them. It also had two cookies, which were delicious. It's taken me months to post this because I still can't believe it happened. Twenty years ago on January 30 we celebrated our honeymoon at the Mansion Hill Inn. Five years later we spent our first milestone anniversary at the mansion Hill Inn. A year ago in June 2018, after four kids and an insane amount of life, we decided to spend our twentieth anniversary at the Mansion Hill Inn- in the same suite we'd spent the previous two milestones. A large suite with a fireplace and ginormous bathtub. A place where we could hunker down in front of the fire and only venture out for food. On the morning of January 29, the eve of the polar vortex in Chicago and in Madison, we called the Inn to confirm our reservations and we were told it was business as usual. Mind you, for six months we had orchestrated this trip, including arranging an epic amount of childcare for our four children who range from a first grader to a senior year in high school- including one who is on the autism spectrum- and renting a car because we are a one car family who did not want to leave the kids and sitter without reliable transportation. Once reassured the Inn was open we left town. I happened to check my email a few hours later when we had reached Wisconsin and discovered a message from the Inn manager asking me to call. I called and was informed me that another guest had smelled carbon monoxide and the Inn would be closed to guests. He offered us a room that night at the Edgewater or AC Hotel- he personally recommended the AC Hotel. We were almost there, we chose to carry on and accepted a room at the AC, with the assurance we could have our room the following night if all was well. Certainly not what we had been planning for six months. Not even close. The replacement hotel was a chain, and very busy (think salesman convention, awards ceremonies in the restaurant /bar, waiting in line every time we wanted to use the elevator and we were on the top floor next to the elevator, not to mention asking for a tub and being put in an ADA room). The next day check out time came and still no word from the Mansion Hill Inn. We had to call them after we left and were told that in order to address the carbon monoxide leak "the furnace had been turned off and the hotel was aired out and it would probably be safe that night". No thank you, we'd made other arrangements. My husband made arrangements to stay at the another hotel on the lakefront. The concierge there was sympathetic to us and arranged for a lovely and large room with a king bed and a luxurious bathtub, wine and chocolates, and other thoughtful amenities. Not to mention we were concerned at this point about traveling back to Chicago in -33 temps. And, *if* that story about the furnace and "airing out" the hotel (in -33 temps) was the truth, I was concerned about all the pipes bursting during our abbreviated visit. I suspect no pipes burst. So, at this point we had checked out of one hotel, packed our car and found a place to hang out for four hours until we could check in at yet another hotel. As I am sure you are aware, just about everything in Madison was closed for the day. Not exactly what we had planned for the day of our twentieth anniversary. I get that it was the perfect storm, the record breaking weather, the "carbon monoxide that the guest smelled" leak on the eve of the coldest day ever, the lack of heat when they had to turn off the furnace on that day to "air out" the hotel, the complete inability to do anything but get us a standard room for the night at a standard hotel in town. The perfect storm. Or the perfect inconvenience. I can't tell you what a disappointment this entire trip was. We had planned and made arrangements for every situation but the one that occurred- whatever that was. I can't tell you how disappointed I was at their attempt at service recovery, that being eventually the manager agreeing to comp us one night towards a future visit. We had to ask for that once he reached out to make sure we were planning a return visit, after we had we left town. We've both been in the service industry for our entire lives. I've never experienced anything like this. If they wanted to or needed to close, they could have and should have told us the truth. It's a totally different season now, and we are planning family trips. Madison came up. I just didn't know what to say. Anyway, that's my review. read more

An absolutely beautiful mansion sitting on the top of Pinckney overlooking the capital building and the rest of the city. We went over a 4th of July weekend in the summer so prices were jacked way up. Honestly, for what we paid, I can't say MHI was worth it. But looking at their standard rate card, prices seem to improve during regular days (although regardless they seem more like Chicago prices than Madison prices to this Chicago-ite) We arrived in the afternoon and had to ring a doorbell to gain admittance. This was a standard procedure every time we came back: guests do not receive a key to the exterior door and someone is up 24/7 to let you in. When we walked in, there was a beautiful bar and sitting area to our left, and a lounge with fireplace to our right. We were shown our room which was an "english basement" style room. Not too much light, but nicely appointed, frette sheets, aveda bath products, a heated bathroom floor, and terry cloth robes. A small desk, sitting chair, large bureau, a chest of drawers, and 42" flat screen completed the decor. Oh, and a huge picture of Lance Armstrong. Huh? Yeah, turns out Trek the bike company owns the whole place, oddly enough. So don't be surprised when you see B&W biking pictures everywhere. Anyways, the bed was extremely comfortable and we heard absolutely no noise the entire time we were in our room despite the Inn having several other occupants. The staff were quite pleasant and helpful when we hung out in the lounge, making us feel quite welcome and comfortable with a never ending supply of nuts and candy, and eating (the included) continental breakfast on the deck off the lounge was a nice experience. The Inn overall is beautifully decorated; think lots of marble, wood, and restored tile. And a wonderful circular staircase up the middle of the house. I wouldn't do the lower floor room again though (room 3.) It was dead quiet, but also dark and a little gloomy. They pitched us specifically on that room vs. another because it was larger, but I'd rather have light than a few extra square feet the next time. read more

I have been dying to stay at Mansion Hill Inn ever since I learned of the Bridal Suite with the hidden bathroom behind the bookshelf. To spoil ourselves a bit we booked the suite for our one year anniversary. Walking through the mansion is truly like a ritzy step into the past, with all the modern amenities you may need, and a more than attentive and welcoming staff. Our suite was absolutely beautiful, but exploring one of Madison's treasured mansions was the best part for me. Perfectly restored to its historical integrity and beauty, you'll never want to leave. We began by enjoying a glass of wine in their private bar. Amanda was an absolute delight. We toured the inn before heading to dinner and a show at the Overture. When we returned we were pleased to find complimentary celebratory champagne and fresh cookies. In the morning the host the next day was more than willing to deliver coffee to our room so we could take the morning to enjoy the balcony attached to our room. While we were leaving the staff genuinely made us feel like we would be missed. Overall it was one of the best inn-stays of my life. I'll suggest Mansion Hill Inn endlessly to friends and family who come to visit, and I cannot wait to spoil myself with the magic of that mansion again! P.s. My stay at the Mansion Hill Inn was very luxurious. It was an unforgettable experience. I enjoyed staying at such a fancy house for mine and my husband's anniversary. It was a great getaway from our children. The inn itself is very neat, clean, and well-furnished. The rooms are very comfy, pleasing, and well-kept! The staff and service should receive six stars out of five. The staff is always ready to greet you when you walk in. I was especially pleased with the innkeeper Mike. As he was working his late hours, he still kept a smile on his face and welcomed my husband and I back from our night out. I asked him if we could have a bottle of champagne in our room, but turns out he already had some champagne up in our room for us since he knew it was our anniversary. How thoughtful! I love this place! The staff was so welcoming and nice! The building is beautiful. There are amities everywhere; cookies, candy, cheese plates, apples, fruit. They have aveda products in the bathroom. There are heated floors in the bathroom. My room is amazing. The breakfast was good. They have games you can play like risk and clue! Very fun! We recently got married in Madison and spent our wedding weekend staying at the Mansion Hill. We absolutely loved staying there and seriously tried to figure out how we could move in perminently. Their staff is top notch!...Greeting you at the door, serving excellent breakfast and happy hour...they even helped with hosting the women in the bridal party while getting ready on the big day. We had such a great time waking up in the morning and talking to Terrance over breakfast. The mansion itself is beautiful and made for great pictures, too. We will definitely stay there again when we head back to the Midwest! read more

My fiancé and I stayed here last weekend, and it was incredible. The inn was immaculate, every detail was considered here. All of the staff was attentive, professional, and helpful. They all seemed genuinely interested in our needs and providing help with places to go and things to do. From the personalized, hand written, notes every day, to the fresh baked cookies on our bed every night, this place made us feel at home. I could not have been more impressed by this establishment and the staff. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first place I will check when I come to Madison. Ah romance! We loved it here! The Mansion is like stepping back to another time at its finest. Elegant and wonderful surroundings, two comfortable parlors for relaxing (one with a bar), a great continental breakfast, and snacks out all day. They even leave iPads out so you can check in online while you're relaxing! The staff was very accomodating and friendly, and gave us some great recommendations where to eat. They have Trek bikes for the guests and we took a ride down to the campus and along the lakefront. It may cost a little more to stay there, but you get so much more than the average hotel. I stayed here while visiting for my sisters college graduation. The entire Inn is beautiful, both the inside and out. If you aren't into a more personal stay, i wouldn't recommend and i would suggest you stay at you're typical Hilton, to avoid the small talk. I personally wouldn't stay again simply because I don't like how personable it is and how it's the size of a bed and breakfast. Although, if you enjoy bed and breakfasts and socializing with strangers (making new friends) this is the place for you! Everyone is extremely friendly. read more

The Mansion Hill Inn is a solid choice if you are looking for something unique within walking distance of the major sites in downtown Madison. While certainly no bargain, for the location and quality of the accommodations, we thought the room rates were fair. While not particularly large, room five was nice with plenty of light and windows. It has a door that opens out to a balcony on the back of the inn. The bathroom was clean and had a large shower and a heated tile floor. The bed was comfortable and we did not notice any noise either from the street or other guests. As another reviewer pointed out, you do have to press a button next to the main door to have someone let you in. We did not, however, experience any inconvenience as someone always came quickly. The complementary valet service also worked well. Overall, our stay was nice and we would consider staying here again. That said, we've stayed at some other bed and breakfasts in Wisconsin that we enjoyed more (White Gull Inn, Blacksmith Inn, and Brayton Bed and Breakfast all come to mind). I think the reason is that, compared to these others, the Mansion Hill Inn lacked some of the personal touches of the other places we've stayed (though the cookies and notes we'd find in the room were nice). While the staff was very good and helpful, they could have been better at anticipating needs and offering suggestions to make the stay more enjoyable. In addition, some of the little things could have been improved upon (e.g., additional bath products were not provided even though the bottles were almost empty; the staff did not offer to help us with our bags when we were leaving; the coffee thermos near the bar doesn't work well to fill their "to go" cups). Also, we didn't find their breakfast to be very impressive and ate elsewhere each morning. That said, it's a great place to stay if you want a romantic weekend and a base from which to explore Madison. read more

We really enjoyed our stay, as other reviewers have said, to get in you ring a bell, which seems a little weird, but it gives the staff a chance to gauge how your stay is going and how they can help you on the next phase of your stay. The staff was very helpful, they asked if we wanted them to make a reservation at the resteraunt we were eating at, and made excellent recommendations for restaurants that we could walk to. After one hot walk around the capital, my wife said that a glass of lemonade would taste great, we mentioned it, and had a cold glass in front of us in no time. We stayed in room number 10. There were no windows , but 4 skylights that let in plenty of light thoughout the day. It is located on the top floor, so going up all the stairs left us a bit breathless, but just a few more stairs led us to a breathtaking view of the city, it just got a bit high for my wife. The TV was great, heated bathroom floor, and a two person walking shower that was more like a small glass room since it was so big and a wirlpool tub. We will definitely try to stay here whenever we are in Madison, the rooms cost more, but the peace and quiet, and the way we were treated made it worthwhile. read more

Old world charm and outstanding service in the perfect Madison location. The staff asks about your day and fluffs your pillows and brings you anything your heart desires. The complementary breakfast of homemade croissants and baked goods reminded me of our stay in Paris--it was that good. (Food is served on china.) At dusk we opened our seven foot french doors to lounge beside the ornate wrought iron railings on the veranda and watch the sun set over Lake Mendota....When we returned to our room, the staff had left a little note about tomorrow's weather and the Dane County Farmer's Market. Aveda products (soaps, shampoo and conditioner, lotions) are provided for you in the gorgeous glass shower. (I could live happily in that shower.) I agree with Jennifer T and Barry M----if I ever win the lotto, I know where I'm going to live permanently ---room 4. Even if you have no partner, book a room for yourself and revel in an elegant, genteel world for a weekend. You deserve it. Bring some Proust to read on the veranda! My wife and I just returned from a four day (4th of July) visit to Madison, staying at the Mansion Hill Inn. Location, quality, friendly, professional, accommodating, generous in spirit are all exemplary. It is elegant yet very comfortable. Continental breakfast was top notch, well above the usual standard offerings. Stayed on the first floor which necessitated keeping the curtains drawn sooner then we would have liked so I would stay on an upper floor during our next visit. Nice porch for added relaxation. B-cycle site for guests' use is a nice feature. The prices were not cheap which at a large luxury hotel would include more amenities such a health club, restaurants etc. On the other hand the intimacy and personal attention more than makes up for such. Great place. Highly recommended! read more
