Welcome -built in 1857 by architect who built the Madison capital building
Jim R.

A cozy and quiet luxury B&B/inn located a few blocks from the capital square and not far from Langdon St and the University. Built in 1857 and rescued and restored to its current brilliance by Trek Bicycle scion, this place is my new favorite Madison retreat. We regularly visit Madison from Minneapolis and have stayed in most of its hotels-especially those close to the University . This place dripping in creature comforts sets a new high bar. Pros: -Gorgeous public spaces on the first floor-restored to 1880s brilliance and they even have a nice bar (not original) tucked into the former parlor serving beer and wine. -our room-7-(out of a total of 10) located on the second floor was massive with cheery classical decorations and all the modern features expected in a high-end property including a gas fireplace, large outside patio, soaring windows making the room bright and airy, large comfy sleigh -style king bed -bathroom was also huge and in room 7 hidden behind a secret wall in the floor to ceiling bookcase. The bathroom had its own separate heat/A/C control and featured a heated floor-very nice! Their were tons of windows and a large shower with a rain shower shower head. -fresh chocolate chip cookies were left on the bed when we returned from dinner-very yummy -free snacks are available in the bar including mixed nuts, m&m's, almonds, and chocolate covered raisins-plus they put our cookies later in the day. -top flight service from the staff from check in to check out -room includes breakfast (although we didn't partake) Opportunities: -it's an older house in a busy neighborhood so parking is tricky on the street. They have three spots next to the house off street (first come first serve) that are valet spots and it is $10 per night -they also have some spaces a few blocks away. Seems like parking should be included to me. -probably not a place for an older person-at least for rooms 6-10 as the only way up is a steep spiral staircase that would be a challenge for some. I would definitely stay here again, even though it's one of the most expensive rooms in Madison. Highly recommended

We always enjoy our stays at Mansion Hill Inn. We get to Madison 2-3 times a year, and although we don't always stay here (it's on the pricier side), it's definitely in our top 2 hotels in Madison. The Inn is charming, the rooms are comfy and well appointed, and the innkeepers are such nice people. Turndown service includes fresh cookies, and a handwritten note. Such a cute, thoughtful touch. Other amenities: *complimentary wi-fi *bike share kiosk on premises (complimentary passes too!) *complimentary newspapers (NYT, MKE Journal Sentinel) *free continental breakfast *complimentary refreshments and snacks *couches and wood-burning fireplace in lobby *Aveda products in bathroom *bar area in lobby serving beer and wine *Frette linens on bed We love staying here. The combination of timeless elegance, sophisticated comfort, modern amenities, and attention to detail make the Mansion Hill Inn one of our favorite hotels to stay at whenever we want to splurge.

I am wondering who this gracious Peggy is. Our encounter with Peggy and the Livingston was an absolute train wreck. We chose a Livingston Inn stay as a wedding gift for our daughter and new son-in-law, and knowing their arrival would be after midnight, because of the reception, called on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and offered to drive to Madison to pick up their room key. "Oh, no; not necessary," Peggy assured us. We have a safe place to leave the key for them. On Friday we even dropped off special surprises for their room and she still would not give us the key. The bride and groom arrived after the reception and were locked out. They looked everywhere around the building, even in the bushes in their wedding finery and THERE WAS NO KEY. They called me and I immediately called the only number available and got an answering machine. NO ONE ANSWERED! This left the bride and groom driving around Madison at 2:00 in the morning on their wedding night looking for an available room. I did not hear from Peggy until the next morning at 11:00. Oh my, how sorry she professed to be, that she had gotten a phone call the previous afternoon, which left her distracted and she forgot to put out the key. OOPS, SO SORRY, BUT NOT SORRY; if her subsequent actions were any indication. I told her the first thing she was going to do was pay for their hotel room from the night before and then find a way to try to make it up to them. What did she actually do? When they came the next afternoon to get the things we had left them, Peggy started the conversation not with "I'm sorry!" but with, "Your Mom thinks I am going to pay for last night's hotel room. WELL, I am not giving her a refund and paying for your room, as well. I can't afford that!" (Hey Peggy, Business 101: You may not charge for a service you did not provide. You had no alternative but to refund my credit card!) The mistake, of no key, is not the worst of this situation. Everyone makes mistakes. The unforgivable part was the unwillingness to make amends. They were offered a future free two-night stay, but who would want to stay somewhere that reminded them of that terrible situation! There was no heartfelt apology or sincere attempt to make amends. Despite the fact that this happened some years ago, when I SAW LAST WEEK A "FOR SALE" SIGN IN FRONT OF THE LIVINGSTON I WANTED TO WARN ANYONE THINKING OF PURCHASING THIS BUSINESS: Don't bank on or pay a premium for the goodwill that would seem to exist from the other reviews that are posted here. The incompetence and heartlessness were too epic to be an anomaly or for me to believe that my family is the only one to experience a train wreck ala Livingston Inn. Considering that the asking price is more than one million over the city's 2024 assessment there seems to be a great deal of, in my mind, questionable value placed beyond the property value and onto the listing as a business. This was our first stay at the property, and every detail, from the check-in, breakfast and beauty of the guest rooms was unparalleled. The owners have done an amazing job at restoring the property and providing superb customer service and care for you. Our stay was better than we could have hoped for! The entire goal of the trip was relaxation and Victorian Dreams made it possible. The room was cozy, unique and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious--huge fan of the caramel french toast. We stayed in the fall, and the Lodi area was beautiful, but this is a location that is worth booking, during any season. We're extensive travelers and are experienced BnB users and providers. Victorian Dreams, and its' owners, are by far at the top our list! We wish we could have stayed longer and will make it a point to come back here annually. We're very lucky to have such a nice place less than an hour away from us in Wisconsin and are eagerly anticipating our next chance to stay agai. Don't hesitate booking a stay here, you will not regret it!
