Strawberry Hollow Farm is a farm and craft shop that opened in Guilford, Connecticut in 1969. It…read morewas founded by Harvey Smith. Initially the farm's main crop was strawberries, and thus the farm was named Strawberry Hollow Farm for their main crop and for the hollow that it sits in. Harvey's government work as a research wildlife biologist took him out of the country and away from his farm in June, the most important month for strawberries. By 1981, Harvey transitioned from growing strawberries to growing members of the pumpkin family, because the growing schedule for pumpkins matched his work schedule. When he retired in 2001, Harvey realized his dream to farm his land full time. In addition to farming crops, Strawberry Hollow Farm also has a small gift shop where they sell various crafts. My family and I recently visited Strawberry Hollow Farm for the first time. There are so many different varieties of pumpkins and other various gourds on display, and their mums were just breathtaking. My wife and I dressed our son like Linus from "Peanuts". There were several spots on the farm for us to stage a "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" photo shoot. In addition to jack-o-lantern pumpkins and sugar pumpkins, Harvey cultivates giant pumpkins that can weigh up to 300 pounds (the kind that you see at a County Fair). The craft shop was really cool too; lots of Autumn and Halloween decorations. In the winter months, everything is themed around Christmas decorations. We purchased a couple of sugar pumpkins to take with us. We enjoyed our time at Strawberry Hollow Farm and we plan on returning in the future.

This place isn't exactly stroller friendly. There were some aisles of plants and the sort that we just had to forget about because they were certainly not wide enough for us to go down. The veggies and herbs were on the outskirts of the place, many flats just on the ground. I decided on a red cherry tomato plant and a 6pk of cauliflower. I noticed a few people at the check out, but again, the area wasn't very wide so we had to go the long way to get into the back of the line. Finally, it's our turn to be rung up. The total comes to $5.18 (which I was pretty psyched about). I go to hand my card and I'm told that they can't run it, there's a $10 minimum. I had $3.75 in my wallet. Beyond annoyed. So now I either leave the plants or go back to get more. We trek the long way back over to the herbs and veggies to grab another of the same tomato plant and a 6 pk of scallions. Now it all came to $10.38 or something like that. The cashier loaded all 4 plants into a plastic planter tray. I wheeled the stroller with one hand and held the plants in the other. The prices are comparable with other local garden centers, but not sure if I'll be back.

It's outside and has that real old fashion farm stand feel. The produce is fresh, delicious, and of good quality. Areas to Work on: Parking is small, it takes some maneuvering to get in especially if it's busy. The prices for some of their produce is outrageous. Figs were $7 for about 6 of them, for instance. There is a woman who works there, I don't know if she's the manager/owner but she is rude and doesn't wear a mask. There's a farm stand down the street that has a smaller selection of produce, but a cheaper price. It depends on what you like.

Of all the sites we visited, this was the stand out. The fruits and vegetables are incredible... literally picture-perfect and bursting with flavor. In addition, the stand has lots of homemade products like mango salsa, horseradish mustard, and the like. These specialty items are delicious! Oh, and don't forget to pick up some of their homemade preserves. My husband and I practically overdosed on peach preserves! There is a beautiful outdoor area where kids can play, which also makes the stand a nice destination for families. Last but not least, the staff that works here is so friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with them.

I'd never visited for any other reason until the year we decided to buy a fake Christmas tree and it was a total failure. Our semi-feral kitten thought it was "home" and over the course of a week had bent all the branches down. She'd done a pretty good job of it and the tree was in pretty sad shape. In my aggravation, I shoved it back in the box and ran across the street to Beaumont farm to see if they had anything last minute. They were so friendly, helped us find the perfect tree in no time, tied it to our car and gave us a discount on both the tree and a wreath. They basically saved Christmas lol
