We wanted to get really great cuts of meat for our new Dutch oven. We came to the right place! I loved it was a one stop shop. Last year we ordered a Sirloin Tip Roast from Ferraros. Unfortunately when it was brought home it was a bottom round roast that was given to the person picking it up for me. Decided to give them a second chance this year circling the choices on their flyer as I wasn't picking it up that morning. What we got was not a Boneless Rib Roast but fat and gristle tied with bland tasting portions of beef in between. And a 3x5 card with instructions on how to cook the roast. This market was previously in New Haven. They were legendary in that location, with really good buys on fresh meats and produce. They had a large area in the rear of the store with substantial markdowns and were a fun place to shop as well as a neighborhood staple. They moved to the current location in North Haven a few years ago. This location is a noticeable step down in terms of the size of the store and the general atmosphere. It is still a good meat market with fresh meats and seafood of all kinds. They also sell many prepared meals. Quite a busy place usually, but there is plenty of parking. The staff is not as friendly or helpful. I had to argue to get the piece of swordfish that I wanted and I don't recommend them for seafood. Still a pretty good butcher shop but not as good as it was before. read more

Oh sweet goodness, this place is pretty awesome. Granted, it's not located in quite the best place in New Haven if you catch my drift, but there are a lot of people shopping there especially on a Saturday morning, so you feel a little safer in that respect. They have amazing prices for deli cold cuts, and they always have their automatic slicer machine running, so when you get to the counter, yes, the cold cuts are a little pre-sliced, but not sliced too prior. Their hamburger patties are some of the freshest and best ones we have seen and tasted. We tried ones that had jalapeños mixed in and then a different package that was bacon and cheddar. Both were super juicy and flavorful. We even got the chicken patties with broccoli rabe in the freezer to try at another time. This steaks were great, especially the New York strip, the DelMonaco ones were a little fatty her that we would like, but that's probably because of the type of cut it is. They also have other Italian specialties like Torrone, etc. I could totally see myself going back here if not by weekly, at least definitely to stock up for the holidays. read more

Ever since they moved to North Haven, their prices of skyrocketed their selection is not as good and the quality has gone down. I don't think they're getting the turnover they need in this new space. They upgraded. Everything is pretty to look at and clean looking, but the old location had everything I needed and everything was fresh and anything that wasn't fresh. They sold deeply discounted with the knowledge that you needed to eat at that day. All the special things that I loved about for ours are gone now, it's not worth the drive to North Haven. read more

Holy meat selection! This place has aisles of all types of meats! They also have prepared meat dishes to cook i.e. stuffed pork roast, Porchetta etc. Really good deals, the butcher (solo) just yells out who wants chicken breasts for example, if you buy multiple items at the butcher counter he cuts the pricing dramatically! Very cool concept! Also a pretty good selection of produce. They have a really good selection of seafood, bought the shrimp and it was delicious. We purchased the fresh pasta and that it was! Delicious fresh pasta! They had a nice selection of imported cheeses also! If you're worried about the location, don't venture out of the parking lot...no big deal! New favorite place! read more

Drove 40 min. round trip to get advertised lunch meat. Arrived 6:15 last night, and young guy behind the deli counter said they had the meat, but he wouldn't cut it as he already cleaned the slicer for the night (they close at 7). Left my cart behind and walked out. This is not the first bad experience at this new location. I used to shop at New Haven and Madison all the time. Holy cow, this meat is awful! Decided to visit Ferraro's in North Haven as I heard they were the "go-to" spot. Purchased a pack of "lean" ground beef, chicken tenders, and Italian sweet sausage. Had this misfortune of trying all three. The beef was so greasy, it had to be drained 3 times and rinsed to be considered edible, the chicken was tough and dry, and the sausage taste like it was made from tires. I have never encountered more gristly meat in my life. Every other bite had to be spit out. Shame on you guys for calling yourself a meat market. read more

Wow my first to the new Ferraro's. Not what I expected or hoped for. Same name no longer the same store. Prices higher, smaller store, the old family feel long gone. I had a sucky experience ordering from ferraros market online through the meat king and would not use this service again. You order things that say in stock and also pay for them, only to find out during the pick up that they weren't ever in stock to begin with and that you won't be getting it. I ordered only 3 items to try it out, one was out of stock but didn't show this on the site, the other they gave me the wrong item and of those 3 only 1 item was what I wanted. They have various pick up locations so if you want to have your order to be fixed they will expect you to come get what you ordered for delivery in new haven. It was very hard for me to get though to them when I called and they gave me a strange excuse that they could not refund me to the credit card I used to make my purchase because it was coming across as a debit card which it isn't and it's the same card I used to make the purchase. This place really fascinates me. It's an old world Italian market with a very diverse customer base. People are typically traveling through narrow paths to get the best meat deals in the state. This is no Stop and Shop which is why i like it so much. It's really mostly about the incredible selection of meats. At the butcher counter, there's always someone barking out great deals for what they want to sell the most. I've gotten great meats and often very fairly priced. The deli counter is great too (ask for Mike). Produce is always fresh because it all moves so quickly. Parking can be tough on the weekends but suck it up buttercup, it's well worth it. read more

Why anyone would put a grocery store next to a busy Target is beyond me. Parking is awful. I went in today and it was mayhem, no numbers at the deli so I stood and waited and waited and finally gave up and left. The pre sliced cold cuts were depleted. I came across Ferraro's Market while searching for a place that has custom cuts of meat, like an old-time Italian butcher shop. I wanted to make a braised Chuck pot roast, and they had a nice-looking cut of meat they call a "Chuckette", which is like a pork roast rolled up and stuffed with fresh herbs, except it's beef, not pork. They delivered it for free my local market, and I couldn't be happier with it. I'll be ordering more soon! read more

This 1 star rating should be 0 based on my most recent experienced with the most horrible steak ever. This was my first experienced ever having to return a steak, but it was either I return it - and give the Manager the benefit of knowing what had happened - and feel like a complete Schmoe for just throwing it out and not reporting this. (Do to the horribly low quality, giving it to our dog was not a third option). 1st Problem: The meat was inedible; more than half grizzle and fat. 2nd Problem: Our with company dinner was ruined! 3rd Problem: Returning it to their store. 4th Problem: The Manager instructed instructed me to "go see Bobby" at the meat counter. I said since you're the manager and I don't know Bobby, don't send me, send yourself, and ask Bobby to come up to the front where I can get my money back - in front of other paying customers. 5th Problem: Bobby shows up and says, "well, it's the shoulder, next time..." I said there may not be a next time after this. 6th Problem: Bobby (whom I suspect is really an owner) says, with a cheesy smile "Ok, I'll give you half." I've been here on busy Saturday afternoons when the place is so crowded that you can't move your cart from one aisle to the next without hitting someone, and I'm still rating it five stars. Ferraro's is one of my favorite places to shop, and I'm so glad that it is where it is. The meat selection is incredible, and this little store trumps any big grocery chain in both quantity and quality. You can find great deals in the weekly ad or when you buy in bulk, and you can haggle with the butcher in back. I've accepted many steaks, pork chops, and packages of marinated chicken discounted or free with a purchase from the butcher counter at the end of the day, and I've always been well aware that if the butcher is pushing something, I should eat it that day or put it in the freezer right away. From general cuts of meat to the store-made burgers and sausages, all of the meat I've had from here has been really, really good. I'm also a huge fan of the prepared foods. The fresh pastas and sauces are fantastic, and so are the stuffed mushrooms, meatballs, sandwiches, and really anything they make in-house. I can take or leave the rest of the store because the produce isn't the freshest and some of the stuff on the shelves looks like it's been there a while, but if you need to get all of your grocery shopping done in one trip, you can do it here, and everything is very reasonably priced. The neighborhood might be a little rougher for some, as Ferraro's is across the street from the Farnam Courts housing projects and near a shelter and some bus stops, but I like and respect Ferraro's for sticking around here for so long and providing quality food at low prices. You can't bring your shopping cart out to the parking lot because of barriers in front of the store, and it can get a little crowded since the store is only open Monday-Saturday until 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays, but none of this deters me from coming here regularly for my meats and choosing the prepared foods for lunch or dinner whenever I can. read more

Love Ferraro's. If you want meat, this is it. The apex of meat purchasing. The top of the meat mountain. You can only look down and laugh at Stop & Shop and C-Town from here. Those dummies. Ferraro's is an interesting place where demographics cross with regularity. You'll see residents from all over New Haven, so if you prefer only to be surrounded by affluent, uppity customers, this is not for you. However, the selection, especially for meats, is amazing. They always have specials and sometimes, you end up with so much boneless chicken, you feel like you robbed the place. Which is kind of fun. They also have a plentiful selection of pre-made meals, which are also fairly affordable, as well as a few options in large packaging like onion rings, french fries, and seafood. The grocery options are a bit more limited and often have lesser-known brands. These aren't priced quite as competitively unless you're super into Best Dollar Mustard. Which you might be. The service is also... interesting. I've never had a problem, but even when I'm friendly, I feel like the cashiers generally wish they could stab me to death for existing. I don't know why. I guess they're not super happy about working there. I get it, but. Still. Also, the fact that they're pretty into God weirds me out a little, but hey, to each their own I guess. But also means they're closed on Sundays. No meat on God's day I guess. Unless you're Jewish, cause that God has a different day. But otherwise, cheap, quality meats. I would like to begin by stating that I am writing this the day before Thanksgiving when I went into the butcher shop to pick up the item I ordered in person on Saturday afternoon. Sadly when my wife got there the very same guy had no idea what she was talking about. NOT A CLUE! I contacted this butcher based on recommendations that I read here on Yelp and rather than call I drove to the location so I could speak with the butcher in person to explain exactly what I wanted. The guy I spoke with was a portly fellow with a mustache behind the butcher counter. I told him I was looking for a long bone pork chop, frenched. I explained that I was looking for something with a 4 to 6 inch bone (handle) and approximately 8oz of meat on each chop. He told me "no problem, we can do that". I explained that I needed this for Thanksgiving and he even explained what I wanted to some older gentleman behind the counter relaying my request word for word. We left off with him saying that I would have to come in before 4pm to pick up a specialty cut. So this morning my wife went into the shop around 10am and saw the very same portly fellow and asked for my order. He was like a deer in headlights and had no clue what she was talking about. She explained to him again what I ordered and he sent her over to the pre-packaged pork chops that I can buy in any chain grocery store. They had snipped about an inch of fat and meet off the end of the bone and called it frenched. REALLY ARE YOU FRIGGING KIDDING ME? Why take an order to have something specially cut if you cant deliver? Why treat me like I am an idiot when I explain your pre-packaged product is NOT frenched and NOT what I asked for? WHY ACT LIKE MY SALE DOESNT MATTER TO YOU?? I got news for you. I am a customer and I have a voice (the joys of a world full of social media). You should treat every order as if it may be your last and every customer as you would expect to be treated yourself. What you told me today is that Ferraro's doesnt care about my Thanksgiving and that Ferraro's doesnt care about my order and that Ferraro's doesnt need my money! No worries, I will tell all of my friends, plus those on Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Urban Spoon, Trip Advisor and any other social media sight that Ferraro's doesnt need their money either.... and that they should take it to a butcher that will treat then right and more importantly deserves their business. read more

Seeing as it's my favorite place ever to shop...I thought I would update. The deals have shifted a bit. Now you can find the cold salad of the week and the end cuts of deli meat just to the left of the fruit case. The vegetable prices have come down significantly recently, but the cheese prices are up. If you're a regular, you need to befriend the big butcher. He's a great guy, and tends to give better deals when you're polite and shopping at the end of Tue-Thurs. For those of you complaining about freshness: he always tells you to use it in the next 3 days or freeze it. I mean, come on...the guy is selling rib eye for $3.99 a pound! I had a problem one time with deli meat, told Mark behind the counter the next time, and he gave me a pound for free. Great people if you give them a chance. They service a tough part of town and huge crowds, and obviously appreciate friendly customers. Hey, if you're planning a BBQ or a summer picnic, you'd be nuts to shop anywhere but Farraro's. The deals they have on beef, pork, chicken, and fish are amazing, in some cases saving 50% is not unusual. They make their own hot dogs and sausages on premise. Yes, the place could be cleaner, more modern, and bigger.......but this is an old inner city market. And yes, there's no point to even trying to go there on a weekend.....it's just too darned small and too darned crowded. You'd be lucky to find a parking spot. Which leads to my biggest problem with Ferraro's. The hours are just too short, the darned place closes way too early during the week. 6pm last time I checked. Most nights I just can't get there before it closes. Which just kills me. read more

From the outside, this place isn't much to look at. It's definitely not spanking clean, nor is it adorned with beautiful signs. But once you enter in... oh, my! This place is a meat lover's heaven! Sausages of all kinds, all sorts of meat cut up in too many ways to count, packaged in various sizes to fit your needs, all in piles and piles, as if they never run out of this stuff! I have never seen so much meat in one place. If they don't carry what you're looking for, ask the butcher and he's willing to custom cut it for you. Although he couldn't cut up chuck eye thinner for me (bulgogi), he suggested I use the precut chuck eye for steak sandwiches, and he did specially cut up beef flanken (kalbi). What' more, he took off one dollar per pound on all beef I purchased. For the produce section, there isn't as much variety, but they carry the basics and possibly a little more. I got fresh oyster and shitake mushrooms (which I love to cook with), and I got a package of three and a half pound native tomatoes for $2.75. With such a steal, as my daughter put it, "I feel joy!". I am happy to have found a place where I can shop on a regular basis. Although not everything is the freshest, you can always find something here. Warning: I can't say I like their premade foods. Finally. A grocery store worth getting in the car for. The selection of meats is really outstanding - beef, pork & veal. The tenderloin filet I bought was way, way beyond delicious. I've never made better meat and I can't remember the last time I ate meat this tender and lean. And it was a great deal and the bargaining with the butcher is easy. The meat is mostly cut and wrapped in plastic, but I did hear him offer to cut something for another shopper. I also picked up a tub of bright green Sofrito Ponce, from Adeline St. So tasty on, um, EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD. The ingredients read: "peppers, onions, coriander (wide and narrow leaf), garlic, vegetable oil, spices and salt." Perfect. A dollop of this, the steaks, Chabaso ciabatta and a green salad was the best meal yet we've had in New Haven. I'm never tempted by the seafood selection. And I don't usually expect to find any produce worth buying, but I keep an eye out. Also, cheap oyster mushrooms, Liuzzi's fresh mozz and Sclafani fig preserves. If they happen to have wedges of parm, it's an absolute steal. And the checkout workers are consistently awesome. read more

Just stay away from this place on the "FIRST OF THE MONTH" ----If you know what I mean....... This place has been a staple of NH for years. We have been going for a long time. I do not go as often as I would like, but the butcher is easy to talk down to a lower price. There are many ethic meats here also, i.e. pigs feet and other not so often items you normally would see at a marketplace. I like their sausage and prices are decent.
