    Amazing biscuits and gravy
    Aiden H.

The staff is very nice and the food is amazing. Got the biscuits and gravy and the biscuits are homemade. 10/10. Also the bread on the breakfast sandwich is really good. Overall very good food and nice people. Hours from home but will definitely come again if we're down here.

We were craving breakfast that wasn't one of the chain restaurants and found this excellent local establishment. The breakfast was hearty and fresh. The breakfast sandwich was $6 and the size of a football! This place is also a bakery, and they have the most beautiful pies I've ever seen. We bought a whole strawberry rhubarb pie for $14. They also bake bread, make fresh donuts, and sell local fresh fruits. There's also a corner with canned goods, chocolates, and candies. It wasn't super busy while we were there, but business was steady as lots of people were coming in to pick up bakery orders. They seem to have a good handle on workflow, because you order at the counter and get a number before being seated. The staff we very friendly and we are certainly returning the next time we drive through.

We were just driving through on our way to Tennessee and oh man are we glad we did! The blueberry muffin was a great size and so good! The cinnamon roll was big and super delicious. Both the muffin and roll were only $5!

Simple omelet with cheddar and onions, bacon on the side, unique toast with (real) butter--hooray!

Good little place. No frills w/ regard to decor, they won't win any (at least non-Mennonite) awards for food presentation, but who cares. A lot of time when you're on the road you miss regular homestyle cooking, which is one of the reasons I went in. I had the omelet, which was a simple foldover variety, with your choice of filling. Bacon on the side was crispy and delicious. Coffee was good too. One of the best parts was the toast, which is a round, "English muffin-style" variety, cut into thick discs. It was really good, not to mention it comes with a health (or non-heathy, perhaps) amount of real butter, which is almost nonexistent anymore--usually most places automatically apply some kind of "butter-like spread," which I never liked. Anyway, this is a good place--the baked goods probably especially, but I did not try any others besides the toast.

    Burger and sweet potato fries

I grew up in mount Vernon and, we never had a bakery or restaurant like this. I was visiting my family and my mom suggested we try it out. I love Amish food and stores! We got lunch which was delicious! Great sweet potato fries, juicy burger and fresh lemonade. I also took home about $20 of homemade baked goods including a glazed donut. This thing was flaky, soft, sweet, and melted in my mouth. So stinking good!!! I'll be back !

There are only…read morea couple spaces in the street in front, but we parked in the paved church parking lot next door. This must be normal as several other customers parked here. There is a sign on the side of the building that indicated if you need assistance they would bring your selection out to you, which would be a sign of excellent customer service. The short walk from the parking lot along the paved sidewalk leads to a set of double doors and narrow steps into the retail area. This could certainly be an issue for those with limited mobility. Once you are into the retail area, you are greeted by the friendly staff and several display cases of the day's selection. The staff apologized for the limited selection, but I honestly found many great items. I am intrigued as to just how much more extensive their selection would be when they first open. They have the typical danishes, (cherry, apple, cheese, OMG THEY HAVE A GERMAN CHOCOLATE DANISH!!!!). There was a wide selection of donuts and other assorted pastries, and several items which brought back fond memories. We walked out with a couple boxes of treasure for a very reasonable price. We sampled many as we travelled and found each one tasty and wonderful. Berkemann's is a must stop location any time we are travelling through the area.

I was interested in trying their baked treats, and upon my visit, I found exactly what I wanted to get. The menu variety was good. They offer cookies, pastries, breakfast meals, lunch meals like sandwiches, etc. The pricing was reasonable. I got a Pink Cookie (Southern IL specialty), a Chocolate Chunk Walnut cookie, a Date Walnut cookie, something called an Orange Chipper (a type of cookie), as well as an Italian sandwich (called Bakery Sub on the menu). The Date Walnut cookie was my top favorite. It was soft and also crunchy where the walnuts were. The Orange Chipper was my next favorite, followed by the Pink Cookie (iced frosting shortbread cookie). The sandwich was loaded and had a good flavor. The deli meats (ham, and salami) were fresh. The service was good. This was a gem of a find for me and I would go back there again when visiting Carbondale. Definitely recommended.
