Located about two miles from I-64 along the main road (Hanover), it is easy to find. There are only a couple spaces in the street in front, but we parked in the paved church parking lot next door. This must be normal as several other customers parked here. There is a sign on the side of the building that indicated if you need assistance they would bring your selection out to you, which would be a sign of excellent customer service. The short walk from the parking lot along the paved sidewalk leads to a set of double doors and narrow steps into the retail area. This could certainly be an issue for those with limited mobility. Once you are into the retail area, you are greeted by the friendly staff and several display cases of the day's selection. The staff apologized for the limited selection, but I honestly found many great items. I am intrigued as to just how much more extensive their selection would be when they first open. They have the typical danishes, (cherry, apple, cheese, OMG THEY HAVE A GERMAN CHOCOLATE DANISH!!!!). There was a wide selection of donuts and other assorted pastries, and several items which brought back fond memories. We walked out with a couple boxes of treasure for a very reasonable price. We sampled many as we travelled and found each one tasty and wonderful. Berkemann's is a must stop location any time we are travelling through the area. read more

Awesome staff, great with orders. We have ordered quite a few times for pick up. Best to get there early they do sell out of cookies pretty quickly. They make the most amazing custard filled powdered donuts I've ever had anywhere. They fill the complete donut with a vanilla custard that is so good, I can't get enough. I'm definitely a lifelong customer as long as their doors are open. Every time I've called to place a special order, I'm always greeted with a cheery voice. This place is an annual stop on the Mascoutah Homecoming Bike Ride. They were very nice to all of the bikers, esp when people were walking out munching on donuts, elephants ears, cookies and mini peach pies. I am sure they sold out by noon. Very friendly place, not any bike parking. read more

This is a great little bakery in little New Baden. It looks unprepossessing, but almost everything we have had is great. The various doughnuts like glazed Jenny Lind had great texture, light and crispy on the outside, not too dry or too airy or too dense. Above all, the most memorable item were the Paul's Delights, which are essentially what all those chocolate Hostess or Dolly Madison cream -filled chocolate cakes are supposed to be like but aren't really. They are devil's food cake with a cream-filled well in the centre, coated in dark chocolate and they are wonderfully made with just the right amount of each component. The cake is nicely textured, not too dry or too wet, it's chocolatey but not too chocolatey. The snickerdoodles were the only thing that was not great, being decent, but a bit bland and dry.
