A Unique and Flavorful Celebration at Farzi We came to Farzi in downtown NYC to celebrate my niece's high school graduation. The vibe and decor are very lounge-like and slightly dark, creating a cool atmosphere, and the staff here are very friendly. They started us off with a complimentary starter, which was like a foggy, paan-flavored mouth freshener. It was definitely an interesting and unique experience to kick off the meal! The food and drinks completely delivered on quality and flavor: Keema Shepherd's Pie: Made with goat mince, potato au gratin, and served with house garlic bread. This was really tasty. Guntur Chilli Chicken Bao: Filled with pan-tossed chicken and a curry leaf emulsion, served alongside house fries. This was flavorful, spicy, and absolutely yummy. Og Butter Dal Makhani: Made with 18-hour simmered black lentil and dry methi butter cubes. This was a decent, solid dish. Chicken Tikka Masala: This was nice and tangy, and very tasty. Whistle Podu Mutton Curry: This was served in a fun way inside a cooker. The meat was fresh, and the curry itself was both flavorful and tasty. Breads: We ordered the Tandoori Roti and Butter Naan, which were served to the table warm and fresh. We also tried the special 3 Cheese & Olive Kulcha, which was beautifully different and delicious. Spicy Mango Margarita: To drink, this cocktail was very refreshing and nice. To end the night, they brought out some complimentary desserts--white chocolate with paan in the center. It was unique and absolutely perfect. Overall, this place is highly recommended for its great vibe and excellent food quality. Indian fine dining is having a (well deserved) moment right now, but Farzi in Tribeca isn't getting much of the spotlight. We went this past weekend, and it definitely deserves to be part of the conversation! It's relatively easy to make a reservation, and you can even walk in without one like we did. Everything is beautifully plated, served with a flourish, and, most importantly, follows through on taste. The 100 Layers Potato Chaat was delicious (and toddler approved!), and had the lightest and fluffiest yogurt. The Paneer Cloud Lababdar is served with "cloud" shaped paneer and gravy on the side. The paneer was also fluffy and soft; I just wish there was more of it! Also, don't skip the naan!! It's the perfect thickness/texture, and the chili garlic rosemary packs a flavor punch. They also served an amuse bouche and palate cleansers between each course that they specially tailored to our son (without the spice), which was a thoughtful touch. They even brought out extra for him when he shouted, "more!" The cocktail menu is surprisingly short for a restaurant and bar of this size. I ordered the Black Magic, and it looked pretty, but I didn't love it. I think this is an area they can really beef up, especially compared to their competition. We went here as a group of 4. The restaurant space is huge and chic/trendy. The background music had a pleasant volume -- easy to have conversations but still enough privacy not to hear other customers around you. They had a unique selection of fusion modern Indian dishes. Apparently they are known for their small plates. Overall, tasty but on terms of flavor nothing outstanding. Very aesthetic tho! We ordered the 100 Layers Potato Chaat, Mumbai Crossroads, Dal Chawal Arincini, Charred Salmon Tikka, Smoked Malai Broccoli, and Jackfruit Palau. My friends also ordered the Lamb and Roti, which I didn't end up trying. My favorite were the Arincini -- flavorful, nice balance of dal and cheese flavors, and nice presentation. The salmon had good seasoning but was a tad too dry for me. The fake fishbone it came with was interesting but didn't really taste like anything. the 100 Layers Potato Chaat was especially pretty. and all other dishes were fine taste-wise, but nothing worth writing home about. For desserts, we ordered the Dakshin and Khajoor Fix. The Dakshin's curry leaf mousse was quite unique and the white chocolate egg was too sweet (but not uncommon for white chocolate). I really liked the Khajoor's flavor combination and temperature contrast of the hot fig cake and ice cream. And both desserts looked pretty and fine-dining-like. They had a unique selection of cocktails -- we had the Black Magic (not pictured), which really tasted like black sesame (as described), and the Spicy Mango Margarita which was fruity and had indeed some kick to it. The portion sizes were decent; mid to higher price range -- on par for this neighborhood. The service was friendly and attentive (at some point too attentive -- every five minutes a different staff member asked us how everything was. I guess it's better than being ignored, but can be disruptive to your conversation and/or eating). And we loved the surprise bites they offered between dishes -- an amuse bouche shot, savory yogurt lolly, and a paan praline as a digestive at the end of the meal. Overall good experience! read more

Absolutely fantastic spot! I love their fun takes on their Indian food, from the paneer lasagna, the aloo chaat to their bread bun. Really appreciate their craft! Their makhani was AMAZING, they don't put any cream in it so it's stewed for a long time resulting in a beautiful final product. Everything was beautifully served with amazing presentation. They also gave a free small bites with cool presentation like on dry ice and on a lollipop Also service was great, we got a nice seat by ourselves and our waiter Harish was great. He offered us flexibility on our drinks if we got something we didn't like and checked on us frequently but not overwhelming. He kindly walked us through the menu and his recommendations. read more

Farzi is a great new addition to the NYC Indian food scene! Lots of innovative dishes that we haven't seen before. I'd recommend the: - dal arancini - lamb chops - 100 layer potato chat - chicken bao buns We also got naan and the paneer donut curry as our main but if I had to return I'd do only small dishes and skip the larger dishes. It was still good but not as good as the small dishes. Loved that they started you with a unique bite and served a palette cleanser before the main. Very minor but would have loved to see a thinner stem wine glass from them! The wine glasses gave sports bar instead of fine dining. read more

We had a reservation and got sat directly in front of the bathrooms. There's no curtains or walls to separate the bathrooms, so as we tried to enjoy our conversation people lined up to use the bathroom and as great as the food was, it's unappetizing to hear toilets flushing. We asked for another table but they could not accommodate. The server from the start left a bit of a bad taste in our mouth, looking at a table with Indian and brown people and leading with "this is elevated Indian food so if any of the names confuse you i can let you know" which we just found funny. It was harmless and well intended but girl we know what naan is lol. The service was chaotic, we got our bottle of wine AFTER all our food came out. I was staring at our server who was laughing at the bar with her coworkers and she came over annoyed asking "did you need something?" Which we had to remind her we ordered wine. The staff kept dropping off the wrong food to our table, and kept coming back laughing and apologizing interrupting our conversation like it wasn't a big deal. It's not a big deal, but for the prices of this place we just expected some more professionalism. Also when we finally got our wine, the bartender was training someone else (which was fine) but he was more focused on talking to his coworker than showing us the wine label or letting us taste it (we all worked in service and I worked in fine dining so we were disappointed at their blatant lack of care). The server kept joking we should've been here last night because it was insane... but it was pretty steady if not slow when we came so why the bad service? Maybe a tired staff. Surprised by the poor reviews, because food-wise this place was absolutely brilliant. Service during our visit was good too, thanks to Samantha who was friendly, attentive, and quick with her orders. Mutton lovers - this is where you should be! Noise levels on the average end and decor/interiors remain unchanged from the previous restaurant, Goa New York. A much better looking menu though, and while most appetizers were creative what stood out for Vegetarians was the Dal Makhani and the Jackfruit Pulao. Non-vegetarians on our table polished the Mutton Curry which was an absolute no-brainer. Served in a traditional Hawkins pressure cooker, it gave a very desi feel to the dish. Cocktails were forgettable though, and they did not have any beer on draft. Service was extremely quick and food arrived within 5 mins of placing the order. Overall, a positive experience, and definitely worth a visit. Go here for their mutton curry and you won't be disappointed. read more

I would give Farzi 3.8 stars. It's got a very trendy vibe, great for special occasion. The menu has some pretty unique options. We had the crunch theory, dal chawa aranchini, and guntur chilli chicken bao as appetizers. The dal chawa arachini were quite a bit softer in texture than I had hoped and topped with green chutney (which is not a favorite of mine) but overall, I still enjoyed them. For mains we had the portobello mushroom do Pyaza and butter naan and chilli garlic rosemary naan. The curry was good, the bread a bit oily. The chilli garlic rosemary naan was also covered in red chilli powder which we didn't love. Overall good. The service was VERY attentive. Almost awkwardly so. I had to say very very often that I don't want another drink (even though the Spicy Mango Margarita was very good!). There was also weirdness about wanting to put items down in a very specific on the table even where there clearly wasn't space for it. Sometimes one person put it down, then another followed and rearranged it. Seemed very over the top and unnecessary to me especially because it disrupted conversations and our meal. read more

We ordered few tequila base drinks which were great. We ordered their specials - 100layer Potato chaat and dal-chawal arancini for apps; cloud Paneer and dal makhani for entrees with breads. Both apps were beautifully plated, tasty , and had perfect balance of flavors. Paneer dish had a rich flavorful gravy with melt-in-mouth paneer texture. Dall was good as well but nothing special. Finally got to try this new spot that has just opened up in New York. Farzi Cafe is a really popular spot in one of my favorites back in Mumbai. I was very excited to try the food and the drinks here. The set up and the ambience is fantastic and the service was excellent. The servers made some great recommendations. The owner and the manager were present and give all their customers full attention. They have some really creative cocktails, and we tried two of their cocktails, which was the strawberry guava cocktail and mango lassi! Going to the food: everything we tried was excellent and the portion size was perfect! They started us with kulfi bites , we then ordered appetizers - chicken Kebab, hibiscus pani shots (their take on pani puri) and the paneer lasagna. For the mains, we had the delicious chicken biryani and Boondi raita. Ended the meal with amazing deserts - kheer cannolis and the date brownie chocolate and ice creams. Very chill ambiance with good music, but the food really took the prize. Creative presentations for age old recipes, often with a twist. Service was alright, the server forgot a drink order too. We had 8:30 PM reservations but weren't seated until 9:45 PM. The host said it was because earlier guests arrived late and they didn't enforce the 15-minute rule -- the same issue we had here on July 6th. There were no cocktails because, per staff, the bartender came in drunk and was fired that day. Then by 10 PM, we were told to order dessert because the kitchen was closing. The manager stepped in and said desserts would be on the house, but when the bill came, we were charged full price plus a Diet Coke that never arrived. They eventually fixed it and gave a discount, but it didn't make up for the chaos. The food was excellent, but the service was among the worst we've had in New York -- no accountability, no communication, and no hospitality (not even a drink offer during the hour-plus wait). Great food, but a management mess. We won't be returning. read more

As a travel-loving adventure mom, I was blessed to be able to bring my six children on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New York City. After reading the great things about this restaurant, I decided this would be the perfect place to enjoy Indian food in the city. I ordered three appetizers, two entrées, three orders of rice, and six orders of garlic naan. I asked the waiter what soft drinks they had on the menu, as they were not listed. They carried Coke products, so everyone at the table ordered a Coke. As the kids finished their drinks, the wait staff kindly offered to refill them, which is normal at every restaurant we ever dine at, so there was no thought to say no. The total for the food was $129 before tax & gratuity. The bill for the original drinks was $42 dollars $6 per Coke, a little pricey, but we are in New York and we are on vacation. However, none of the staff serving our table ever mentioned that refills were not free, and they charged us for every single drink brought to the table $102 for Coca-Cola. Gratuity was automatically added, which finalized my bill to $300. Needless to say, I was shocked. The food and service were good; however, the lack of communication and transparency was utterly unacceptable, especially since the soft drinks were not clearly marked on any of the menus, and I specifically had to ask the waiter. They close down the kitchen whenever they want depending on traffic regardless of whether you have reservation. The bar is like a state fair ground with bar tenders shouting and absolute chaos. Another one of those Indian restaurants that draws initial 6 months crowd and then sputters. read more

The food was fine the first time we went. We made a reservation via Resy which we had to cancel in advance due to a family emergency. We cancelled 45 hours in advance. The restaurant's policy on Resy is to cancel by 5pm 2 days in advance (even if you book today for tomorrow and cancel immediately, you will get charged cancellation), but it is entirely up to the restaurant to enforce the policy and they can choose to waive it. We have never had an issue with any restaurant in NYC with advance (more than 24 hours) cancellation (we have lived in NYC for over 15 years, and dine out nearly weekly). Farzi refused to waive the fee ($15 person, $60 total), despite our clear emergency. They blamed the charge on Resy and said they would lose money to Resy if they did not charge us. I reached out to Resy and Resy confirmed that it is entirely up to the restaurant to enforce the policy and that they would not take any sort of fee from the restaurant / the restaurant would not lose money - as they claimed - if they waived the fee. My interactions with the restaurant were terrible. They straight up lied in order to keep the $60 cancellation fee. We have been in similar situations before with other restaurants and have even had to cancel last minute, and restaurants have kindly waived the fee when reasonable. All conversations with restaurant happened more than 24 hours before the reservation - there really was no reason for them to not be kind in this situation. read more

Decent food, but crazy akward service. No initial greeting other than Want Water? The server was extremely odd and stood really close to our table, we ordered a bottle of wine and he couldnt find it and eventually someone else brought us 2 glasses of some random wine. We sent that back and about 30 minutes into dinner the bus boy came out and brought us a different bottle that was not what we ordered but we just accepted it. After an odd 5 minutes between the buss boy and our server trying to figure out how to open the bottle we had finished all our appetizers before getting our first glass. Finally we got our wine and at the same time they brought the main course, just as we were about to take our first bite the server decided that was a great time to come and greet us like he should have done when we arrived. After an odd 5 minutes of telling us about the resteraunt and the speacials he finally left and we could take our first bite. The food was ok but not great. The whole thing felt very rushed and out of order. Not a romantic experience for my date. We both left laughing about how extremely akward this dinner was. Buyer be aware. I went there with my family for my birthday celebration. Initially the vibe was nice. The manager and the chef themselves became very friendly and pushed a lot of food our way. Despite us saying no, they insisted we needed to try things and then billed us for every single thing they pushed on us. Not the vibe I expected. The chef himself insisted I needed to try a dessert for my birthday despite what I had ordered already. And again billed us for that as well.
