I'm visiting DC, go to clean my glasses and the nose bridge finally gives after almost 7 years and they break in two. I don't have contacts or an extra pair, my prescription usually needs to be ordered out, my WHOLE JOB relies on me reading a computer screen, I'm here for another week (at least) and I really can't afford to drop hundreds of dollars on new glasses at the moment. C.R.A.P. Oh, and it's like 5:45pm. On a Saturday.... Luckily Fashion Optical was open until 8pm on Saturday night. I'll admit, the photo of the front didn't give me high hopes, but I was desperate AND they had some great reviews. The owner, Osman, was FANTASTIC!!! Fixing my glasses, short of using epoxy, just wasn't an option. Did I mention I also JUST put brand new high end lenses in my old frames a year ago? So, he suggested we try and find some frames that would fit my lenses. Huh? I didn't even know you could do that?! At a glance, they don't appear to have a massive selection, but somehow we still found 4 options that worked, 2 that I liked, and I ended up with new Fendi frames that I actually like for $149 and get to keep my nice lenses. He was super nice, really made sure they fit me well and gave me professional feedback on why he didn't think certain frames worked on me. I felt great walking out in my new glasses, confident about my choice and happy to have supported a local business. He's been running it for 10 years so he must be doing something right! He certainly helped me out of a potentially very bad situation. Thank you Osman!! ----- The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I didn't have lenses made (they take 5-7 days here because they send them out), so I can't speak to that service). I would categorically not recommend any patients looking to have an eye exam go to this store. As soon as I arrived I had an uneasy feeling, as I've never encountered an eye store that also sells low-end watches and cheap perfumes. It's like a shop you'd find in a low-rent flea market, not somewhere you'd let a medical professional examine your eyes. Save your time, money, and health and stay away. If you're looking for perfume and glasses at the same time, this is the place for you! It was funny and made me question my sanity for buying a Groupon for a place that had zero reviews on yelp. You can't see it in the photos posted by the owner, but the perfume/cologne takes up one whole half of the store. The biggest con for me was that it took two weeks to get the glasses. We were promised a week, maybe 5 days if we were lucky. I did NOT appreciate having to call 3 different times asking when the glasses would be ready. I really started to get worried that we had been scammed and had paid for the glasses with our debit card instead of credit card. They came through in the end, but what would have been a 4 star rating turned in to 2 stars because of the delays and lack of communication. What lured us: a $50 Groupon for a $225 credit toward glasses, and me being able to force my guy to finally face facts and get glasses, because who wants to waste 50 bucks? It still seemed kinda expensive. Free exam, $325 for Ralph Lauren frames, $179 for Zeiss lenses, and $65 for an anti-glare, anti-scratch, etc coating. Grand total: $344 + $50 for the groupon = just shy of $400. Admittedly, the last time I bought glasses (Guess frames) it was 8 years ago and it cost around $250 without a Groupon, but it makes $400 feel really, really steep. I liked the optometrist and he really, really made us laugh (unknowingly) when he kept talking about how women learn to repress reflexes. He of course was talking about applying mascara, but my guy could only think about gag reflexes...go ahead, giggle like a 13 year old, 'cause we sure did. read more

I'm visiting from out of town on business and had a serious glasses issue - I rolled over on them in bed and twisted them pretty badly. I only had one pair of glasses with me, and some backup contact lenses. Fashion Optical was one of the few places open on Sunday, the morning after I messed up my glasses. I dropped in and Osman was super friendly and ready to assist. I was scared because it was a pretty bad bend but he took the time to fix and straighten them out. I waited a week to post to see how things went and all is still well with my glasses - they even fit better than they did before I bent them up. Bought Groupon for this. Eye examination was alright. I thought this was a good deal but wait until you see the prices of the frames and lenses. They are above $200. I still paid ~$300 in the end. Do not be fooled by the 'branded' frames they have. We would not know whether it is original or not either way. The quality of the frame in the display was different from what I get. It's less than 6 months and it was broken. I tried to get a warranty replacement but they do not have any accidental coverage. I mean really, for 'branded' glasses that cost more than $200. I just do not expect any calls from them regarding the warranty. So I'd rather take my money elsewhere. Do not make the same mistake I did, thinking this is a really good deal! read more

Osman was amazing. I broke my girlfriend's glasses and needed to fix it ASAP. This was one of the few places open every day of the week. Great customer service, reasonable price. Fashion Optical is great! I needed a new pair of frames and live in the neighborhood so I stopped in. The owner was helpful and patient, providing lots of different frames for me to try, and then helping me narrow down my favorites. The price was reasonable too. Fashion Optical doesn't take insurance, but he gave me a neighborhood discount, which essentially made my glasses cheaper than using my insurance. On top of that, I was able to file an out of network claim with my vision insurance that reimbursed a part of the cost. The turnaround time was pretty quick too. This place is run by a couple of scam artists. Purchased my glasses in January and over four months later still don't have them. Why? First, they said it was delayed 4 weeks by the manufacturer. Then they said there was an error at the place that makes the lenses. They then made me come in for a new eye exam but they never conducted an eye exam they just looked at the glasses while I was there and said that they looked like the wrong Rx so they sent them back. They told me at the start that if the lab that makes the lenses couldn't get them right they'd give me a refund. Now they are saying, after all this time, I'm no longer eligible for a refund. Even though they (and the lab) are the reason it took this long. Total scam. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

This place is a fabulous find in so many ways it's hard to know where to start. Service is extraordinary. We went to repair a pair of Ray Bans and buy another and I noticed two things: 1. They sell perfumes, which at first seemed odd for a glasses store; BUT to my utter delight, I found my favorite Paloma Picasso, which I thought had been discontinued. 2. They have an optometrist on site and accept drop-ins. Dr. Feinberg even deferred his lunch to give me the most thorough exam I've ever experienced. Osman, the exceptional and super friendly manager, offered to match the online price for my contacts and gave me a loaner pair. Then when mine weren't available in six-packs he gave me another loaner pair to try a new brand. It's rare to find this level of service in a neighborhood shop. Oh! They also sell a wide array of watches. (Remember those?) I plan to treat myself to one when I pick up my contacts. No more fishing for my phone to know the time! read more

I loved this place. I found it through a groupon offer so the price was terrific. But even more important, the selection and customer service were excellent. I found a pair of sunglasses I like very much. The owner was exceedingly patient and also very knowledgeable. He helped me evaluate different pairs, made some good suggestions, and ensured that the pair I ultimately selected fit perfectly. The store is kinda offbeat--it is also some sort of perfume store-- but don't let that deter you from treating it as a serious eyeglass store. I highly recommend. read more

After he was done, I asked what I owed him, and he said nothing. He spent 15 minutes with me, and was patient, courteous, and meticulous with me, all while knowing that he wouidn't make a penny off of me. This place is great. Dr. Feinberg is not only a thorough optometrist, he's a kind and interesting guy.

I've very happily had two pair of prescription eyewear made at Fashion Optical and only a really great experience with the owner and the vision care specialist who works with him. As far as the health of your eyes and spot on measure of your vision, Dr. F is absolutely one of the very best in the area and (as another reviewer said) an incredibly funny and immediately endearing man. In getting to know him and the depth of experience and studies and community outreach, he's impressive. And now his pro-bono work has taken him twice overseas to both rural and urban parts of Asia. It's a funny little block there on Columbia Road with an old world feel and market goods out on the street and, yeah, you bet, knock off Nikes and Timberland boots made who knows where. And that's OK for those kinds of things, I think. But it when it comes to designer goods like prescription eye wear and sunglass frames, authenticity and quality really do matter and that means everything to the owners. The Luxottica frames and his Zeiss lenses are the real thing. You can't fake the kind of proof he'll give you. So in response to a previous reviewer about the turn around time... Fair enough that comment in some ways. But you have to keep the dialogue going with them on that. Between the lead time for ordering the frames from Luxottica and then the custom making of the lenses (out of town) and then 2nd and 3rd quality checks before they ship back to DC, changes in make time are to be expected once in a while. Bear with them y'all. You be glad you did when they come in and are perfect. If you want fast over the best quality, think about putting your eyes first? Keep in mind also, that as small, independent shop, they don't keep stock in a lot of the frames (even the big box places don't) and some might be really good designer ones that he's gotten from other vendors and only has certain of those sizes and measures on hand. Ordering the frames maker direct takes time. I'm very glad (DC Medicaid patient as I am right now) and needing specialty services once in a while and (as I've said once in another review) sometimes you get really lucky an independent find of a provider who will help within the limits and beyond when they can with the costs and insurance and billing. Toward that, the first place I went in DC for Medicaid provided glasses was Howard Univ Optical. Love them for what they do, they said "Medicaid takes two months." FO had my first pair, with eye exam, done in 1 week. Best of all for me, has been their honesty, fair business practices. That's a really hard to thing to find these days. The owner who've I worked with primarily also has a great eye for face/style. He does a great job of helping keep me in front of my glasses. read more

I was the annoying customer. I liked the sample contact lenses after the eye exam, but a few days afterward I wasn't happy and wanted to adjust the prescription. They set me up for another appointment at my earliest convenience. I thought the lenses were drying out my eyes, so they special ordered a new set for me to try. At every step, I got the sense that they truly wanted to find me the best possible prescription, and I think that in the end they did. read more

My husband and I found the service at Fashion Optical exceptionally gracious and generous! We stopped by to have a bent temple on my husband's glasses (purchased in India) straightened. The two friendly guys on duty--part of this family business--greeted us cheerily and immediately solved the problem. They were competent, quick, friendly, and -- amazingly--didn't charge for this service 'though we'd never previously patronized the store nor indicated we would in the future.
