We hired Fassio Roofing to do a complete re-roof in Soquel, and Mike and his crew were fantastic. The roof hadn't been replaced in 45 years and there was a lot of repair to do. I also requested some upgrades (fascia boards, skylight replacement, etc.). My impression was that this was a big roofing job for a typical SFH in the area. Mike and team were very patient with all of my questions, and I really appreciated how well they kept me informed every step of the way by asking for my input and feedback on each of the decisions and keeping track of all of my requests. Mike's guys just completed installing a roof exhaust fan in my attached, uninsulated garage. Very professional and fast. The fan is thermostatically controlled and not only does it cool the garage beautifully, but if I leave the door from the house to the garage open, it does a great job of cooling the whole house! Mike came recommended by our renovation contractor after a leak developed under our solar panels. I called and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly he responded. We were able to setup an appointment later that day. Mike was right on time and climbed up on the roof and figured out it was probably an issue with our 10-year-old Solar installation. He personally does not remove the panels, but described what probably happened when Solar City was on the roof and aiming for a rafter and missed and didn't seal the hole correctly. He recommended I get in contact with Tesla Energy and see if they would fix under warranty and if not or if they charged a ridiculous fee to call him back and he would work with a local solar installer to coordinate a fix. After a lot of back and forth with Tesla, I finally got them to come out and sure enough, it was a problem with their install and they did not properly seal the holes. All got fixed under workmanship warranty and the leaks are now fixed. I can't thank Mike enough and we will be calling Fassio to do our roof replacement when the time finally comes. A curious feeling of being happy spending money on a roof ! We needed a new roof and had the added complexity of solar panels across two of the south facing portions of the roof. Saber was one of only a few companies that handle both roof and solar installation and repair so we got bids from all the firms within a sensible radius of our house. My wife's first impressions were accurate to the job - good integrity - honest approach &competitive pricing to boot. Interesting points of note:- - Jay was very attentive on email with me. - He treated my wife with equal respect (not a strong value for contractors in general, 'implicit bias' IMO). - His crew have been with him for a good number of years. - He came up multiple times to check the work. - He apparently pays the team a bonus on fridays if after he inspects the work it is perfectly done. - They were always on time - They were polite - They cleaned up ever evening - They finished when they said Netting this out, this was the cleanest contractor execution we have had at the house on what was in our opinion slated to be a right mess. Got five bids from different companies. My roof situation was complicated by having to remove the solar panels. One of the other companies which had the highest bid could do the panel removal but Mike's bid was the most reasonable and his customer service was the best. He spends lot of time explaining options before we made our decision. We ended up adding additional insulation which added quite a bit more cost but Mike gave me some previous customers to check in with before I made my final choices. Mike had done excellent work for us a couple of years ago to repair roof leaks around a skylight. He gave us a timeframe for replacing the roof. When we had our house painted and gutters replaced, we decided to go ahead and get the roof replaced at the same time. Mike's crew came out as soon as the painting was completed and in 3 days the job was done. They tarped the inside of the house to make sure dust and dirt did not cover our furniture. They checked in daily to make sure the tarping worked. They worked quickly and efficiently and cleaned up around the area when they finished the job. When we ran into a problem with the gutter company we had originally hired, Mike stepped in and got another company to come in quickly and at a better price than we originally were to pay. I had two houses with different roofing issues. House 1) had a leak where a cricket drained. House 2) had a leak over the garage where two edges of the roof met. Also the roof had no venting, including the garage. So drilled vent holes in the eaves around the garage, put two eyebrow vents in the roof of the garage. Also two eyebrow vents on either side of the house and 2 solar vents in the center of the house. Jay was awesome crew came early and finished the job in 2 days instead of three. Found matching tiles to replace all the broken tiles that would have caused more leaks in the future. Best of all the whole job came in under the estimate. I had 3 different roofers came out. All had different ideas on how to address all my issues. Jay was not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either and was the only one who addressed all the problems I had. Very good experience with Fassio. I had an issue with my roof that I was concerned about. It looked like a shingle was torn out and the underlying wood was rotting. Michael came over the hill to my house for a free estimate. He checked it out and determined that there was nothing to be concerned about. He answered all my questions and explained what was going on with my roof and also offered some advice on painting over the area, which was purely for cosmetic purposes. I also asked him for an estimate on a whole roof replacement when the time comes, which he was happy to do for me. Got bids from numerous SC companies and the best bid, by a fair amount, was from Mike. We were able to get on the calendar quickly and they stuck to their schedule, which is more than you can ask from a lot of contractors. When the date came they arrived on time and worked diligently through the week. Every day they cleaned up the place really well, and didn't leave any nails around from the demo. There was a lot of termite damage that needed to be repaired and they did pretty good carpentry to get it back in shape. Roof color and new gutters made a huge difference on the appearance of our home, and the ridge vent helped cool our attic and upper story. All in all a great experience. read more

I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains in a wildland fire zone and saw the 2008 fire near my house burn for several days. This fire created its own micro climate in the valleys and ridges where it destroyed sevral houses. To avoid this happening to me I researched the internet for fire safe construction and found the 1995 Fine Home Building Article entitled "Fire-Resistant Details". This article gave me a working understanding of the problems to be solved when remodeling your home to be fire safe. With the principals, goals, and objectives identified, I interviewed materials suppliers, local building officials, and engineers to quality assure in my design theory, and seek their views on selecting local contractors to perform the work. I learned that not only does a roof need to be Class A fire resistant in terms of being constructed out of non-combustible materials, but should also function as a thermal barrier to minimize the interior of the house heating up and catching fire from the inside. This is also the case for the walls and windows as pracicable. Furthermore, I discovered my cathedral celing/roof was unvented, and perhaps the cause of some moistrue problems and excessing heat build-up issues. With all this information in mind, I prepared a preliminary plan to solicit contractor bids from. Based on my enginnering background I decided to hire the most quilified contractors for my new stucco siding and metal roof. For the roofing contractor I prioritized the following qualities: 1. Technical knowledge of roof design in fire zones and hot climate zones (since I am concerned about future Califorinia droughts & Hot spells). 2. Working relationships with material suppliers and their technical support staff. 3. Years of relevant experience and references 4. Ability to work with me to develope the final roof design and contract 5. Cost effectiveness and cost competeive All of this considered I selected J. Saber Roofing; and proceeded with a very clear contract that provided for timely completion and the potential for problems typically discovered during construction. The roofing project took ten days to complete as expected, and included some repair work discovered when the old roof was removed. I also elected to repalce the gutter and downspoute so as to match the quality of the new roof. All extra work was fairly priced with advance notice to think about it. I am more than satisfied; my house with its new dark green metal roof looks great and blends in the the native Redwood trees in my area. The house also feels cooler during these recent hotter summer days due to the improved venting incorporated into the roof design recommended by J. Saber Roofing. I waited to review Fassio until we had a good rain here in Ben Lomond. We had a good rain-of Biblical proportions. Lots of wind and rain. We got a bid which was exactly what we ended up paying, nothing was added on. Fassio roofing came in, tore off the old roof, made minor repairs over a really wet area we had. They cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our house and land. Were good with our dog who wanted to play (you are asked to keep your pets in). But really nice people, professional, great quality, we are very happy with our new roof. We could have waited another year or two, but we wanted it done before problems started. Jay and his team are the best! I called him after being referred to him by a good friend who had had some work done on her roof and was happy with the results.
