We stopped by randomly on a Sunday and they were pretty busy (pre-COVID), but wow they are SO. ATTENTIVE. My bf was looking into a mountain bike and wasn't very versed in all the other brand bikes. Great bike shop that took care of my mountain bike. I'm not a local resident to Portland, so it was silly of me to show up to Portland with 90% of my personal bike. Yeah, I forgot some of the parts I took apart from home so needed some help to get the missing stuff together. I also had a new set of cranks that I needed help for it to be installed. Here are the pros and cons, but overall my experience was positive at the end. Pros: - Friendly and knowledgeable staff crew. - Communication was solid, they used both text messages and email to notify you with updates. - Prices are fair in a sense, they didn't gouge me where I needed to take out a mortgage to pay for their service. - Their service time is on-point, did not take longer than what they initially told me up front. Cons: - They required a $50 non-refundable deposit just to look at your bike to assess what needs to be done and how much it will cost. The time to evaluate the service requires 48 hours, after which they will give you a quote for the cost via text message/email. The deposit will apply towards the cost of the labor and material if you proceed with their service. Summary: It was too bad they couldn't find a replacement stem face plate for the part I forgot from home, but I found it elsewhere and they were gracious enough to screw the faceplate on for me without additional cost. I don't know this bike shop, so to have them tell me up front that the $50 deposit is non-refundable was like, "uh, so I can't back out of whatever you decide to quote me for your service without losing that deposit, huh?". Back at home I have bike shops that would quote me prices without a deposit even if they had to keep my bike for a day or two. To each their own I guess, whatever, I took the risk because their bike shop looked cool but also I did not have a ton of time to consider elsewhere. I can't ding them Yelp review stars for the non-refundable deposit, because they tell you this up front, and I ended up with an above average service. Not the cheapest price for the service I've seen, but it's competitive, and they did an above average/great/fantastic service for what my bike needed. They sell some nice high-end SC, Specialized, etc. Bikes that were way more expensive than my "average-joe" trail bike, the bike shop was clean and everyone there was particularly friendly. It's a place I would shop for a bike or go if I had questions about mountain bikes, etc. Even though they don't sell the brand of bike I ride, they were able to help me get it put together where I am now able to rock and roll with it. Thanks a bunch folks, I might bring my bike back to Portland in the future and if I need more help I'll definitely consider hitting you guys up again. Best MTB shop in Portland. This is the only place I trust to work on my ride. Super honest mechanics who never oversell you on anything. They go out of their way to give you a range of options and services - all to get you back on the trail as safely and quickly as possible. These guys treat your bike like a pediatrician cares for their little patients. Calm. Encouraging. Everything's gonna be alright. I bet they'd even give your bike a sucker after a checkup. There's zero bro vibe and everyone makes you feel like the only customer in the world. They keep extensive records of the repairs, chase down warranties for you, and have a drool-worthy collection of new whips for when it's time to upgrade. I understand covid ruined things. I understand certain shops don't lend tools, I understand shop minimal prices. BUT, hear me out. I went in to get my stem bolts tighten just so I can make it home. STEM BOLTS, I'll say it one more time. STEM BOLTS. I walk to the table "hi, I just needed to use a 3mm Allen key just so I can tighten my stem" FTF- "can't lend tools out, but we can get it tighten for you" Me- "oh awesome" Remember, STEM BOLTS worker comes back out: "Here's your bike it will be ten dollars for minor adjustments" bruh wtf, I wished y'all would of told me y'all were going to charge me ten dollars to tighten four bolts. I would of just walked home with the issue and just done it myself lol. It was just more annoying for me cause a multi-tool was sitting right in front of me when I got there and I could of just done it but I respect the rules. Went home anyways and had to re-adjust my bars and my wahoo. Didn't even bother to ask me how I wanted them. I never said they don't do a good job, never said they were rude, but the communication wasn't there and also did y'all really have to charge someone for something so, so, so simple for certain people? It's like getting charged for asking for directions, like why. Idk? I miss bike shop Generosity that's all. I wasn't looking to get free service, any cyclists knows that tighten stem bolts don't take more than a minute todo. And it's also not like they ain't making money. Several sites never update their page inventory. What was in stock was really in stock at this place. Demoed the bikes in the lot and streets after quick suspension setup. I ended up being helped primarily by Jason who spent hours explaining everything to me (I'm a total rookie) I test rode a few and ended up with the bike of my dreams. Jason fine tuned and customized everything on the bike for me and was super thorough. I was laughing and having fun the whole time I was in there and the entire crew they've got working at Fat Tire Farm is awesome. Great bike shop on the west side! Staff is very knowledgeable, friendly, and actually ride mountain bikes too. Not a large shop so fairly limited on what they have in stock, but what they do have is from reputable brands. Demos will be for sale on a regular (yearly?) basis. I believe most of their demos come from their Hood River location. Very reasonable customer service... if something goes wrong or you're not satisfied, it's been my experience they will do what they can to make it right and you happy. read more

I can't comment on bike repair or purchase, but if you want to rent a bike I don't really reccomend this place. The staff was nice, but it was very inconvenient as an out of towner. It's pretty far from most other stuff in Portland and their hours weren't as good as other bike rental shops. I went there thinking I could bike to Forest Park or the Rose Test Garden, but they said that we'd have to return the bikes by the time we got there. Plus they don't even give you a lock for your bike. The guy advised us to 'keep an eye on it' if we were going to go to the Rose Test Garden. This advice hardly seemed practical. We ended up going somewhere else. I know this review is a bit niche, but I felt it important to let visitors to Portland know about my experience. read more

After some pretty awful bike shopping experiences I found Fat Farm. The store is in a lovely 'trendy' feeling part of town. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by Carlos, I gave him a couple of things I was looking for, we talked about where I ride, and type of trials (I am from out of town)! He showed me a couple of bikes, got one down off the rack, got it All pumped up and I as out the door for my first to ride. Some of you may be thinking, well that's pretty standard right? No, I have been into 5 stores in CA and OR, none of them treated me as well as the guys. By the time I got back Carlos had another bike down, ready for me to take out too. anticipating guests needs, love it never got that at other stores! 4 bikes later, test riding some for more that once, I was happy to walk out of there with a new Specialized stump jumper. Great shop, and excellent service! Even better than I expected. Here's my story: While taking my old 1997 Bontrager Ti-Lite on a tour of the Pacific Northwest, both of the seals on my Marzocchi z.2 Bomber fork failed when I got to Bend, Oregon. The oil was puking all over, and I needed a fast fix at my next stop: Portland. But the bike shops I took my bike to wouldn't touch it--until one told me to take it into the Fat Tire Farm. So I called the Farm. They had my Marzocchi seals in stock! I made an appointment, and took my bike in. A couple hours later, Jimmy gave me a call and let me know that after he took the shock apart, he noticed that a particular washer was missing under the cracked seals in both stanchions. And the really bad news: he'd have to order the parts. Super bummer! My mountain biking in the area was over, it seemed. I told Jimmy that I was leaving Portland the next day, I really couldn't wait for a part to come in. Could I find the special washer in a hardware store? I didn't know what to do, so told Jimmy I'd call him back in a bit while I thought about it. I called him back less than an hour later, and he told me he had salvaged the washer off another fork in the shop's storage, in the staff collection! He'd charge me for the washers, and later replace the them from the fork he took it from when the order came in. Jimmy answered many questions I had about my fork--way more than I expected he would. He was clearly passionate about mountain biking, and he knew his stuff. "I've been working here since that fork came out," he told me. "I remember selling them here new over a decade ago!" He really knew his stuff. He also came over to help fit me for a new helmet when the sales staff was busy with other customers, and I'm very pleased with my new helmet. All of the mountain bikes there were first-rate machines, and gorgeous. But I couldn't expect any better service than what I got. And the price was very reasonable for the time and work involved. Meanwhile, I went back to Bend and got some more trails in before returning to California, and my shock now feels smoother and more plush than it ever has. This place is a bike nerd's wet dream. Tons of cool parts with a great selection of apparel. There is even a good amount of ultra-high-end (and unattainable for person in my income bracket) bikes and componentry to gawk at while you browse. They are a pretty high end shop and I could see how it might be a little bit intimidating for someone new to cycling, but there is a good selection for the "I just need a bike" crowd. I am visiting my daughters and did not bring a bike with me so I needed a place to rent, I wanted to see Forest Park and found Fat Tire Farm was very close to it. After reading some other Yelp reviews I was a concerned about the place and how I might be treated but decided to try them anyway. We were helped by Gary (I think) and he was very nice, got me a rental Specialized Rockhopper and helmet, plus we bought my daughter a helmet, Gary gave us a map and some instructions for the park and we were on our way in about 15 minutes. I was in the Portland area and wanted to ride. I found Fat Tire Farm and was very pleased. They have very decent bikes to rent out - I ended up with a Specialized 29er. Originally, I wanted to check out Sandy Ridge but the shuttle there from Portland Bicycle Tours had a minimum of 4 which is understandable. So I rode up the street from Fat Tire to Forest Park. If you need a good well kept rental MTB, this is the place. As for the bike shop itself, it seems pretty cool. If I lived in the area, I'd start with this place and hopefully, never switch! read more

I rarely write reviews, but I really wanted to call out the stellar service and atmosphere this place delivers. I had big plans for riding over the weekend and Friday morning I had a stick get caught in my wheel. I brought ii in for them to look at, and it turns out that the hanger and derailer both were toast. They were able to replace and fix everything while I waited which allowed me to ride over the weekend. This was just the latest example of the awesome service I have had here, and a great example of why you should support your local shops. read more

I went in the FTF having only ridden old, poorly maintained mountain bikes and I told Barry (cool sales guy) that he would have to tell me what I wanted and not the other way around. He did that in spades. He listened to what I had to say about the riding I want to do now and in the future and spent the time to get me on a bike that would work best for me. They have a great inventory, high-end gear, and knowledge to back it up. I am not a big bike guy (yet), but they treated me like any of their customers who are. I called to see if I could get a Santa Cruz Stigmata bike I bought checked out. I was invited in to have it looked at. The gentleman who checked it out educated me about all the work that had been done to it, the progression of the model over the years, and pointed out every custom add on. He knew the price of each different piece. And when one shifter needed to be replaced he recommended me to a place I could get used bike parts at a good price. A LBS is really all about service. And simply that, is exactly what you are getting here. You don't usually go to a LBS to save money but to support a local establishment you believe in. Of course you are spending a shit ton of money so you better be getting great service, but for me at a bike shop that is not usually the case. Except here. River City? Bunch of pompous butt-turds. Performance Bike? Toys-r-us employees. Westend? They have employees? You get the point. I spent a shit ton of money on a bike. It was a special order and arrived in the time frame that they stated. Went to the shop to pick up the bike and was happy with everything. Took the bike for a ride and had problems with the headset (not at all the shops fault). Went into FTF to have it looked at. Place was busy as heck, service tech came over-remembered me-asked what happened and I told him. He put my bike in the rack and fixed the problem (bearing exploded)-no charge-in 10 min. Readjusted the derailers just to make sure they are primo. Left happy. Went riding again-had another problem with the headset (it really was a POS this time cracked spacer). Went back to FTF and told them. Tech remembered me again, 3 weeks later, told me this is ridiculous and they hooked me up with a Chris King headset and installed it. While that tech was installing it another employee came up to me gave my dog a treat and told me the new headset looks sick. To me-thats what a bike shop is all about. Shop employees that know what they are doing, remember me, take care of me, and offer to fix a problem without hesitation or having to ask for the manager. FTF has friendly employees and good prices, but I go there because as people who ride themselves they know what it takes to perform service correctly and how important it is to do things right the first time. Tim in sales and Jimmy in service are absolutely the most professional bike shop employees in Portland and always make me feel welcome. Prices? Often simple service items are done on the spot and instead of a fee I am simply told "We'll catch ya next time".
