Tucked down Dame Court just off Dame Street, The Stag's Head is one of those rare pubs that feels genuinely historic rather than designed to look old. The building dates to the late 1800s, and the interior retains the ornate features of a classic Victorian "gin palace"--rich carved wood, stained glass, brass rails, and a warm, glowing bar that feels wonderfully preserved. We stopped in around 4:30 pm, which turned out to be a perfect time to visit. There were other patrons enjoying drinks and food, but the atmosphere was calm and relaxed rather than loud or rowdy. It felt like the kind of place where locals drop in for a quiet pint on their way home from work before the evening crowd arrives. The staff were excellent--friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good (we failed to take photos because we were too busy enjoying it). As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see the Impossible burger front and center on their menu; it was deliciously prepared with guacamole on a brioche bun, and not an afterthought on the menu. My companions both chose the Irish Beef Burger, and said it was excellent. One thing to know: this is a traditional Victorian pub, so cocktails aren't really part of the program. Expect beer, wine, or spirits rather than mixed drinks. In a place like this, that actually feels exactly right. Other pubs do serve mixed drinks. Between the history, the ambience, the quality of the food, and the wonderful staff, The Stag's Head is the kind of place that makes you feel like you've experienced a real piece of Dublin.

The space was so loud that it was genuinely difficult to hear anyone at our own table, which took away from the overall meal. Food-wise, it was a mixed bag. The fish and chips were average, and three of the four portions at our table had a surprising number of bones. Accompanying the fish, the mushy peas didn't have much flavor, though the chips themselves were decent. The blackened cod tasted more like it had been marinated in a soy glaze than actually blackened, but the flavor was still good -- just not much else to the dish. The burger was massive and cooked to a standard medium (for anyone visiting from outside Ireland, that's typical). Service was the biggest miss. It took an extremely long time to get drinks, and even longer for entrées to arrive. Between the noise level, the slow pacing, and the uneven food, I don't think I'd return.

If you have to wait for a table you can get a drink at the bar and they'll grab you when your table is ready. Everything we tried was well seasoned. We left with a full belly. I ordered the Social Menu for $65.00 which included a glass of sparkling wine, an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. It was worth it and I ate everything. The tempura prawns were my favorite.

The Beef Stew and Mac & Cheese was just what we needed! The Beef Stew was super flavorful, dark in color, nice bite sized chunks of beef (and plenty of them), and then a mound (!) of mashed potatoes on top. It was divine! The Mac & Cheese with pulled pork had a sweet-ish profile. Homemade Mac & Cheese is the base, and then pulled pork (in a BBQ sauce) is layered on top. THEN they sprinkle cheese over the whole thing to give it a nice crunchy top. They have beer flights ("taster trays") of the draft beer, plus cans available and even "casks" (which isn't on tap, and once opened needs to be drunk!) Last, the folks who work here are really nice and they seem to attract a very nice clientele. Plus there are games. This seems like a pretty special place all around.

Perfect if you want a firmer snacking appetizer experience than mozzarella sticks. Very rich though, so come hungry if you're gonna get this in addition to a meal. Beef and Stout Stew: Lots of nice stewy liquid to go with the mashed potatoes. The beef itself was moderately tender. Not tough, though not fall apart. Some great flavors. Fish and Chips: Pretty standard. Crispy fish batter, flaky interior. Crispy chips and fluffy potato inside. The mushy peas where a bit too grainy and not that mushy actually.
