Elisa at Kept Art Restoration is a miracle worker…read more A few weeks after just purchasing a new piece of art, someone in a fit of rage sliced it up with a kitchen knife. The damage was extensive - an 8" Gash, and 3 other 1" punctures. We were both heartbroken as we loved the piece and what it meant to us (it was a 3'x3' acrylic on canvas painting). The Canvas was shreaded, with threads hanging and cracks in the paint. I found Kept via a google search, contacted them and Elisa came over and said it could be repaired. Her communications were excellent. She communicated with the original artist to get the background on the painting, talked to us about restoration ethics (much more complex than we would have imagined) and went to work. The repair took a few months, but well worth the wait. The painting has been restored, and it now once again hangs in our home. To say we are amazed is an understatement. While if you look carefully you can see signs of the repair (you REALLY have to look hard, and at an obtuse angle that catches reflected light) it is unbelievable how good it looks. Elisa took care to make sure it nearly exactly matches what the original artist - while maintaining the ethics of her craft. We are thrilled with the results and highly recommend her for repair and restoration.

Most pieces had been exposed to cigarette smoke and cleaning / waxing care typical of the mid 20th century. As I sorted through it all, it became clear that I needed professional cleaning and restoration. Elisa Stewart of Kept Art Restoration came to the rescue. to date she has cleaned restored and stabilized three oil paintings on canvas, and a small piece directly on wood. all of the results have far and away exceeded my wildest expectations. Elisa takes meticulous records of every step of the restoration. The report, with photos, accompanies each piece, along with all original materials, from, hardware, documentation. In the case of the canvas pictured, she did an amazing job of peeling back the layers of time and revealing the vibrant colors beneath. She also discovered the date accompanying the signature, that had been covered by my grandmother or my great grandmother (vanity!) In addition to restoring the image, her care and skill in repairing small holes in the canvas was flawless. In the end, we have a lasting portrait of my grandmother as a young woman that we can pass on to the next generation. On pieces where restoration or retouching is necessary, Elisa is extremely careful, and approaches the job with high ethical standards. The retouching has been invisible to my eye, and yet, is performed in such a way as to be completely reversible if a future owner/restorer so desires. She can tell you the details of the process. Proper art cleaning and restoration takes time, and is costly. But the results are all that matter, and I have been very happy with the results and the value of Elisa's work. During the art drop off, we…read morewere very clear about our wishes for the mounting, to which the owner, Brett Thomas, agreed: full back support with two sets of steel French cleats. The cost was extremely high, but we were ok with it since we were getting what we wanted. About week before the work was completed, they called us to confirm some details. During that conversation we, once again, confirmed the agreed upon mounting solutions. Brett confidently said "Yes!" When we went to pick up the work, we realized that they, indeed, had changed the design and instead of steel cleats had installed these piddly little hooks. In addition to being flimsy, the hooks would have caused the frames to stick out of the wall, something we definitely did not want. Brett Thomas did NOT deny our conversation and the agreed upon mounting, but belligerently started yelling in our faces, insulting our intelligence and completely disregarding our wishes, and refused to refund the extra cost for the labor he has originally charged us. He flippantly tried to deduced $20 from the cost (0.800% of the total cost). Having just completed the construction of a 100% custom house we have dealt with hundreds of subs. Never have we seen anyone so rude and obnoxious.

I called the shop to ask about repairing a 25 year old, but very nice, dining room table with a…read morefold-out butterfly leaf. The table top would no longer close all the way when the leaf was stored, it felt like it was hitting something. Dennis listened to my description of the problem and asked for some pics of the sliding mechanism which I sent. I fully expected to pay a premium for a house call, but instead Dennis texted with a few other questions and we ended up talking. The mechanism had 2 star gear wheels on each side and he told me sometimes the gears ends up binding before it can close all the way due to one of the gears slipping (4 teeth on one side and 3 and the other). His suggestion was to remove the 2 gears, re-seat them with the same tooth-count on each side and put it back together. Low and behold that simple suggestion fixed the problem that I had spent several hours trying to figure out. I asked him if I could pay him but he said no, he was running an honest word-of-mouth business! For any future furniture "needs" Dennis is my first call!! Good Guy!!!!!
