I'll gladly be more bitter if there's a "Fee" involved. I enjoy a good crafted cocktail, and in my own liquor cabinet I have quite a few bottles of bitters. Fee Brothers make up more than 50% of those. Besides being good quality, I like that the more common varieties are easy to find, and even the less common ones can be obtained at liquor or specialty stores, or online. The other thing I appreciate is that they are made in New York State. Many distilleries that strive to sell a majority of New York State products will include at least bitters from Fee Brothers, sometimes others. As far as I'm concerned, this is a win/win. read more

I was excited to learn about Fee Brothers when it was mentioned at a Yelp event. I love bitters didn't know they were here in Rochester. It's located on a Portland Ave with a small parking lot but there is street parking outside as well. For Covid, they've closed off the shop and only one customer can enter at a time. Most of the merchandise is behind the counter and you tell them what you're looking for. I was only interested in the bitters but they also have cordial syrups, brines and botanical waters. The clerk was really helpful with suggestions on what to pair different flavors with. Regular bitters are about $5 and the barrel aged bitters are $10. I've already tried the whiskey barrel aged one which was delicious with bourbon or even seltzer but I'm looking forward to trying the toasted almond bitter in Baileys. This was the second year in a row that I attended a Rochester Cocktail Revival Week event at Fee Brothers. This family owned business has been around for well over 100 years and these events have been a great chance to learn about this place and the people. Do bitters need to be refrigerated after the bottles are opened? I don't know the answer to that question. But I keep my bottles of Fee Bros bitters in the fridge. I could take a photo of the Cherry and Grapefruit and Peach and Orange bitters in there. Or I could use a better photo borrowed from a retailer's web site. Site it is. I love truly family owned and operated artisan food businesses, and so it has been with Fee Bros since 1863. I didn't pay any attention at all to bitters until I discovered Fee Bros. From my perch, the "A" manufacturer (you know who I mean) was the only one making bitters and I only used them when I made Manhattans at home, which is rarely. But a couple of years ago I had a lovely cocktail at a restaurant and it was made with Fee Bros grapefruit bitters. Then a few weeks later, I had a Manhattan made with Fee Bros cherry bitters. It was amazing how just a couple of drops of these wonderful fruit aromatics transformed the character of a beverage. I was hooked. Now I add Fee Bros bitters to a number of things. Fee Brothers is my kind of place. They have been around forever, yet it still manages to be a family business. They make great products (bitters and mixers), and they are very friendly! If you go to the Fee Brothers, you can get some of their harder to find bitters for your home bar. The sad thing is that their ancient cash machine is not working anymore, they went modern! But at the "storefront" they only take cash. I say storefront in quotes because, even though they sell their products in that location that's not really their main source of income, so it's not their priority. If you want to make your own cocktails at home, it should be a priority to you to get there and grab some bitters! read more

Thank the Bitters book that I finally visited Fee Bros during my most recent visit. I've been aware of Fee Bros like I've been aware of other bitters, a passing glance, a mental salute for elevating my drink. However, Bitters really made me appreciate bitters for their prominence, history, potential accessibility, and unique variety. Fee Bros is completely no frills. The front end space is dominated with cordials, bitters tastings, and bitters. I was momentarily lost looking at their botanical waters and cordials until a woman pointed out their bitters, hiding behind the old fashioned cash register. Stationed slightly above where the barrel aged bitters. We dashed, sipped, and murmured appreciation toward the sampled bitters as we painstakingly made our purchasing decisions.
