The day Deneen and his crew arrived to do the job, I foolishly paid Deneen $450 in cash and in full prior to completion of the job. Shame on me! I thought that since Deneen was an acquaintance through a mutual friend, he could be trusted. Deneen left his crew to do the job. Deneen returned later and pulled his crew off the job just before the job was actually completed. Deneen told his crew that "they had been there long enough". I spoke with and texted Deneen during the week to find out when he was gong to return to finish the job he agreed on and was paid in full for. His response in text to me: " Dave I'm done, 5 hrs. x $26 an hour for my main man $22 for my other man plus dump fees, fuel chipper,bucket, truck, I'll pocket $100, DONE" and "Dave I'm done did more than I should have I should never have agreed to that, wanted to help you out but we're done, should have went with your neighbor landscape or for $500." So I guess the key word in Deneen's text, AGREED, means nothing to him. Funny way of doing business with your customers, especially ones that you know casually through friends, no? Unfortunately, the owner does not like to write up any contacts and prefer verbal agreements. This was an issue for us since he promised us to put down the mulch and then back down claiming that he needed $150 more than what the agreed upon price was. Mr. Dominguez called me in the morning stating that he was supposed to provide the mulch and collect the remaining balance. Later on that day he claimed the remaining balance but wanted more money for the mulch. His masonry was great and the clean up was ok but the extortion was not okay and this is a lesson learned. (Note to self) Make a list of things agreed upon and prices so that both parties can sign it.

Steve came by to assess several hours after we requested and was able to schedule removal for the next day, astonishingly. We did not see indemnification language in his form proposal (agreement), but were able to have him add us as additional insureds -- and he volunteered to add all adjoining neighbors as well. His policy limits are adequate. And he affirmatively reached out to the school across the street from us to notice them about the large trucks and noise associated with tree removal. It was a huge job, but he and his team were able to complete the work in a single day. Other contractors had told us it would take two days. He and his team were clearly experts at rope work and took down branches without causing damage to the pergola or patio below the tree. They did have to take out our beautiful smaller tree adjoining the large, leaning tree, sadly. This kind of work is expensive -- heart-attack-inducing expensive -- but based on the quotes we received, Steve's pricing is not unreasonable. Very professional company and team, very responsive to questions. We would not hesitate to recommend Steve to anyone who finds themselves in the same unfortunate situation we were in!
