All their instructors are very knowledgeable, and actually know how to teach every type of person. Whether it be language barriers, varying age groups, or even different learning speeds. Now, onto my most important point, during my course with them, I noticed how incredibly diverse and inclusive their roster of employees, instructors, and students were. I loved seeing that everyone in my class could look to their right or left, and see someone that looked like them, teaching or conducting an exam or even running a company. If you are considering a place to take your first aid or lifesaving courses with, look no further. There's no reception area, you can easy walk through the locker room straight to the pool and spit in it, if you want - no one's gonna meet you on your way, even if it's your first day. Probably that's why you'll be basically forced to pay for the full course prior to even discussing anything - while filling up the form on a website you have to enter your credit card information, you can not skip it. *The price is shown for 9 lessons, but you have to pay for 10. Why not show the full price? To make the amount look more appealing? As I said, there's no staff to meet you on your first day, there no staff to even answer the phone!!! You won't hear "Hello, this is SeaOtterSwimSchool, how may I help you?", cause that's just someone's cell you are calling on. There's a high probability of not hearing anything at all for the same reason - no one picks up, even if you call many times at working hours. You might hear an answering machine, telling you about classes in January - very up to date. The class does not start on time - it might not start even after being 30 minutes late. In summary, for many reasons like the last one this school is not for adults, cause the approach is not serious at all.

The instructor is young and inexperienced, and I didn't gain anything from the sessions. When I raised these concerns with management (Nives), she said there was nothing she could do. A word of caution--avoid this facility. It's not worth risking your health or your kids' safety! I'd much rather go to a community pool that prioritizes sanitation and adheres to safety regulations. And it's not cheap either so why spend that kind of money for a 1/5 facility and instructors are inexperience???

From the very first lesson, the kids were clearly learning a lot and becoming really comfortable in the water. He clearly has a lesson plan and knows exactly what to do, all the time, and the kids have responded well. They look forward to every swimming lesson! (I called the Lifesaving Society to get the exact date of the submission.) As a result, the next lifesaving society course was not approved. It took me multiple calls to the Lifesaving Society and the City of Whitby. I will not return to the city of Whitby for other courses.

It has a nice-sized pool, large enough locker rooms, hot tubs, and saunas. It has a decent number of rooms in which classes are held and the lobby is pretty nice. I am not a fan of the avid disuse of the lower floor, however: it seems like a waste of space into which expansions could be made. I happen to use the health club- the gym- part of the building the most, so speaking from experience, that is where I'm taking a star off. Though the vast majority of the staff members/personal trainers are amazing people- particularly Leo- many could afford to learn a little more about working with the public. When it comes to equipment and space, there is even more room for improvement, for the health club. Most of the free-weights are pretty old, and despite quasi frequent updates, they are usually only to the machines. This is great for beginners and the elderly members of the health club, who seem to gravitate towards machines, but for the younger/more experienced members of the club that use free-weights and barbells more often, it would be nice to see some new purchases. Also, some more space would be useful, as in the past, the club has gotten rid of some useful equipment in an attempt to make more room. It should be noted that the maintenance staff and the majority of the receptionists are delightful people. I very much like how exceptionally affordable the health club is. A gym membership, personal training, swimming lessons, etc. are all amazingly economically feasible.

I've been here a few times for both skating and lane swim. Staff have always been nice and really…read moremake a point of providing accessibility. They allowed me to goof off in the recreational skating area with a friend in a wheelchair when it wasn't crowded. They have skates for rent and hot chocolate for sale. In terms of swimming, showers are old but work. There is an accessible shower corner with railings, seat and shower hose. Change rooms have ample bench space and you have the choice between coin operated lockers or just leaving your stuff in the cubbyholes. The lanes are WIDE and the pace is much slower than usual. Last time I went, their fast lane was a little crowded and almost everyone was going at a medium pace. The medium lane was extremely slow but I was able to get away with drills and sprints with only two other swimmers in there.

This location has a large upper gym area, a pool, and courts for different sports. They also have classes throughout the day! I guess that's still true but I was surprised at how much the monotone grey-scale of the entire place made it feel cold in here. I guess I'll continue with a couple more critiques. One is that I don't understand why they don't simply keep towel racks in the plus change-rooms as they do at every other Y I've ever been to. It's part of what you're paying for, and though you can get them at the front desk, it just seemed odd that they just won't keep them stocked in the change-room for convenience. The change-room itself was quite small and has virtually no seats which was a bit odd too. Apart from those minor things, the workout area is well stocked and they even have a couple unique things in what is sort of a mini studio in the middle of the workout area. One thing I really appreciate this place as a runner is that their track is longer than most of the other ones as it circles the gymnasium as well. It's nice having longer straightaways so you don't feel like you're turning most of the time. If you're strictly into using weights, they do have what you need here though you can probably find other places to go to for cheaper. However, Y's (including this one) are great for having additional amenities, which includes a full-sized pool, gymnasium, running track, programming for kids and other things. There's also often more a community feel at them and often a chance to make connections too.
