DO NOT USE FERN. Fern cheated my family out of several photos. She's very unprofessional and will not return any emails once she has your money. We hired her to do a 4 family photo shoot and when she sent the gallery she had 6-8 shots each of the other 3 families but only provided 2 shots of my family. She would not return any of my emails asking where the other shots of my family were. During the shoot she just stood there pressing the shutter while we did all the work of gathering the family and kids and positioning/posing ourselves. Because we couldn't see what she saw through the camera we didn't know there was awkward spacing in the group shot or that our parents weren't in the center of the shot and she didn't bother letting us know. We were really unhappy with the washed out results. She's on the expensive side and even more so when she cheats you out of several photos. read more

Not only did our family photos turn out incredibly beautifully, the photo shoot was also a great bonding time for my family :) It was my family's first time ever doing a family portrait, so we were unsure about certain details like the location and outfits. Thankfully, Fern was tremendously accommodating to my family's opinions, and with her help we were able to pick a great spot and well-coordinated outfits. During the photo shoot, Fern's friendliness and sense of humor made the process all the more enjoyable. DON'T USE FERN AS YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER! We don't want anyone's wedding memories to be ruined, so read carefully. Fern, despite what she'll tell you, is actually a very inexperienced wedding photographer. I'll go into more detail below, but in summary, she: 1) Either FORGOT TO TAKE STANDARD SHOTS or only took one or two (low quality, unusable, and blurry shots) of things like the ring (yes, can you believe it?), dress details, first look (she completely forgot), the entire cocktail reception (how is this possible?? Her assistant - JEFFREY KUO - took maybe 5 poor quality photos of the back of people's heads, zero photos of the reception..seriously what was he doing the ENTIRE TIME?) 2) VERY LOW QUALITY PHOTOS - more like point & shoot camera shots. As if not getting important and basic wedding shots was bad enough, the photos she did take were largely unusable (i.e. blurry, super unflattering, overexposed using flash). Don't GET TRICKED. 3) COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. You would expect that wedding photographers would be super responsive given the high cost and importance of your event. NOT FERN. She takes an average of 2-4 weeks to respond to each email, and in a few months, she just won't return calls or emails. We haven't been able to talk to her for ~3 months already because she's unreachable. I have a feeling that for any dissatisfied customers, she disappears. 4) DOES NOT DELIVER PROMISED PHOTOS DESPITE TAKING YOUR MONEY. Yes, it's been 8 months since our wedding and we never got the photos she promised. We paid $3,100 for 10 hours of photography. She was on the cheaper end of wedding photogs; lesson learned is that you get what you paid for. I would have paid double that to have a reliable photographer now. We still have not ended 8 month ordeal since our wedding in Oct. 2012. You do not want to work with an amateur photographer who will turn cold on you if you show dissatisfaction. The photos were so bad and delivered almost half a year late, that we had hire another photographer to redo our photos (but we can never recapture the actual wedding). We NEVER got teaser photos like other prof photogs we used. We didn't see any photos until nearly half a year later. Summer 2012 We first met Fern the summer before our wedding. She was responsive when we were prospective customers. She said that she delivers her photos 6-8 weeks (PER HER CONTRACT) after the wedding. Also, we made a list of shots that we wanted to make sure that she didn't miss, which she said were standard. Wedding Day (Oct 2012) Our concerns grew through the day. The concerns revolved around her being very indecisive in what type of poses and shots she wanted. It really seemed like she had little or no experience. Midway through the day, we went to our videographer and told him to take charge because it was clear that Fern had no clue what she was doing. Our videographer had 10x more pose ideas than her...that's plain said. Non-Delivery of photos (Dec 2012) Given that Fern quoted that it would take 6-8 weeks (PER HER CONTRACT) to deliver the completed photos, we were concerned when two months passed. So we contacted her on Dec 30. Guess what? She took over a week to reply. You know why? Because she went traveling to Asia and basically DID NOT communicate that 1) she was traveling long-term and 2) that our photos were going to be very late. This is so UNPROFESSIONAL. The Nightmare (Jan 2013 - Now, Summer 2013) Our suspicions were correct. We kept sending emails and she would take 2-3 weeks to reply. We ultimately received photos, and they were the worst photos ever, full of shiny faces and overexposed shots. My wife cried. And we are comparing to our guests who took photos with their point-and-shoot cameras. The photos showed several things: 1) Complete lack of skill (the base photography shots were terrible) 2) MANY MISSED photos (even though we specifically made a list for her, which she said were standard) 3) Complete lack of skill in post-editing 4) Complete disregard of the customer's anguish We requested re-edits because they were so bad (and she knew it too). She finally gets back into the country in February and quotes 'am much better equipped to help you'. Well, what the hell were you doing for the last four months? I can't imagine how many other clients she has harmed. The wait process was painful. We've tried calling her, but guess what? Her voicemail box is always full. How are we (or other clients) supposed to reach her? We re-wrote a contract and she had a small partial refund given our frustration. No Ending? And you know what's makes it even worse? She just completely stopped responding and we find a DVD in our mail. To our dismay, she didn't even fulfill the contract that she re-wrote as it is missing photos she promised. I know she probably won't respond and we probably will just have to cut our losses. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT HIRE FERN FOR ANYTHING. read more

I first found out about Fern Lee Photography when I was browsing blogs and came across her photos. I immediately loved the style -- clean, fresh, and bright. Fern excels at photographing children, nature, and all the little elements you'd want to see in pictures. After taking engagement and wedding photos with her, I've learned that she'll pose you but really capture the moment right after when you're laughing or looking at your significant other. Fern was great and actually gave us additional time for both the engagement and wedding sessions when she didn't have to. (One extra hour for the engagement and two hours for the wedding.) I was really appreciative of the extra wedding photos that were taking on a different day because my husband got an eye infection the day before our wedding. No need to remember the pus.....although we do have some photos of that for our viewing pleasure too. In regards to communication, she responded pretty quickly. She usually responded within a couple days if not that week. Example? I actually emailed her the night before our engagement session just in case she was up to ask her opinion on which outfits would be good. She responded in 5 minutes at midnight! (She also stays up late editing, too!) Time frame for pictures: - We took engagement photos early December before she left for Asia and got them back in February. - Wedding photos were taking late March, with an additional 2 hours in April. The last time I had a professional family portrait was when my children were pretty young. When it's time for my older son to go off to college, I wanted him to take at least a good family picture with him. So I went to Fern Lee for help after seeing her work at a friend's house. Though my boy is away in college, the void in my heart is easily soothed when I look at the photos that Fern took for my family. The pictures are so natural and 'powerful' that I almost feel like my older son is right here at home with me! To me, a good photographer must not only be able to capture the moment, but the soul of each individual in the same picture. It's so easy to take a family portrait when the kids were little because they are so innocent and hence it's easy to capture their beauty, but with teenagers it's a whole new story. I had Fern photograph three events, my wedding ceremony (~100 people), my mehndi (~100 people) and my reception (~550 people). All 3 events were at different locations in the Bay Area and were a blend of Bangladeshi and Nigerian traditions. Fern was wonderful to work with, for all events. With all the stress of wedding planning (especially with multiple events, and when you are planning from the other side of the country!), Fern made things so much easier. She was always very professional, quick to respond to emails or texts. She was very open in asking what I was looking for and to working with my budget. In particular, at all 3 events, I was impressed by her professionalism. If you have ever been to a Desi wedding, then you know how pushy guests can be go take photos with the bride and groom. But Fern was extremely patient with these guests, and did not get upset when they would block her to take their own cell phone photos or repeatedly made requests for her to take photos. I think I got more annoyed with them than she did! haha Even though my wedding ceremony was her first time photographing a Muslim wedding, she was extremely respectful of our traditions and customs, and made sure beforehand that she knew what to expect. And finally, the final photos are breathtaking. I only have my full album from the wedding ceremony so far, but I already know that the photos from the other events will be amazing as well. We found Fern through mutual photography friends for our family shoot and she was great! It was the first time taking photos w/ our 1.5 yr old and we were a little anxious since she is not known to stay still for very long. To our dismay, our baby did not want to pose nor stay still but Fern remained patient and never showed annoyance and even spent time to play with her and encourage her. Great under pressure. Fern helped me on a special assignment in LA where I proposed to my girlfriend at the time. We worked together on devising a plan where I would pop the question at the Urban Light art installation. Finding the right photographer for any event is stressful, but finding the right one for a wedding is just exasperating! At least that's what i've heard. Fern made it so simple to work with. My wife (at the time fiance) and I met with Fern shortly we after we got engaged. We went in with the mindset that we were going to have to interview all these people just like we had to do with our venue, caterer, coordinator, and other vendors that you must book for a wedding. This review is so long overdue! My husband and I got married in May 2018. We hired Fern to be our wedding photographer almost 2 years in advance. I found and followed Fern on instagram for awhile because I fell in love with how bright and lovely all her pictures were. I reached out immediately once I got engaged. She is such a sweet and amazing person. She made booking and discussing ideas so seamless and easy. My husband and I are both very awkward when it comes to taking pictures, but Fern had the patience and made it fun for the both of us during our engagement photoshoot and wedding. A customer wants 1) timeliness (show up on time, don't cancel the appointment, quick turnaround of the product); 2) friendly attitude (not everyone knows how to pose, okay?); and 3) a good value on their investment (money matters). I found Fern Lee Photography browsing the Yelp. After looking at the pictures we saw on her website, my fiance and I decided to use her for our engagement and wedding shoots. She beat out our other photographers because we love the way she capture the warmth and the natural beauty of her subjects. When we had our engagement pictures taken, it rained. But Fern was able to make us feel comfortable and relax. She was able to take some sweet photos of us even though we were rained on. My husband and I got married in June 2017 and hired Fern as our photographer. Her editing style was just what we were looking for, pretty, romantic and timeless! Fern was so professional, friendly and easy to work with from the beginning. After finalizing the package, she actually informed me that she had a conflict on our wedding date but offered another photographer in her place and she would still perform all the editing. Offering an immediate solution before panic started to kick in lol. Me being a paranoid bride, I asked her to edit some of the photos from the other photographer just to make sure it would be what we wanted. Fern accommodated all my requests and multiple questions to alleviate my concerns and I booked her without hesitation. On the day of our wedding, both primary photographer and secondary showed up on time and were so organized especially when it came to family photos and moving things along when it came to the Chinese tradition of toasting each table. The day went by without any hiccups and we even got a few short breaks because they were so efficient! We first got a preview of the wedding which consisted of a summary of our day and it was so exciting to relive it only a month after. Then she proceeded to send me photos in batches because we had so many since it was a 14 hr day! She definitely over delivered in the quality and quantity of photos. We had agreed on 600-700 final edited photos but I actually received 1000+ and we loved every one of them! We loved how we were kept updated on each and every step of the way without having to follow up very much at all. We also ordered a wedding photo book from her and it was also beautiful! When we received the final USB, some gorgeous 5x7 prints, and a personal thank you note for choosing her to document our day, we were so thankful that we found her. Fern Lee Photography does incredible work! Fern photographed an engagement session for us a few weeks before our wedding as well as the wedding itself. We absolutely could not be happier with the photos that we have from both of the sessions- they are just so lovely. We really enjoyed having her as our photographer (emphasis on REALLY). Fern did our family photo shoot, and it was the first time we had taken family photos in almost a decade, and first time ever doing family pictures that weren't in a Sears or something. The photos turned out pretty good, and there were some really cute ones especially of my parents (which my dad loved), and my brother (who usually is really fussy with pictures, but ended up having fun with this experience). We have the pictures hung up in our home and people always compliment them when they visit. Fern was adorable and understanding, and didn't seem the least bit annoyed with us even though we had to come about 20-30 minutes later than planned. Fern is an extremely talented photographer. We used her for our wedding at Scott's in walnut creek and I just LOVE my photos. She had so many great, beautiful ideas which turned into wonderful pictures. Also, she is just a joy to work with and was so quick to respond to emails, which is awesome for a stressed out bride-to-be. Like I had written before, I am writing an update based on Fern's work for my wedding. The wedding, as expected, was a whirlwind and I have to admit I couldn't remember everything that was going on. A few days later, I panicked and wondered if I had put enough time in for photos of my new husband and me. When I got the photos back, I saw that Fern was able to capture so many important moments, from the posed to the candid ones. I had nothing to worry about because of her eye to detail and ability to shoot quickly so the moment didn't pass. Also, Fern was so so flexible and helpful during the day. For one thing, my dog was not allowed at the tea garden where the ceremony was so I knew that I had to have photos with him afterwards. We chose a park a few miles away near the reception restaurant and Fern was great at accommodating this; also, she got some wonderful photos of us with our doggy. :) I am so pleased with all the photos and the experience as a whole. read more

Fern came to our home to photograph my husband, my 6-month old and me. It was a fun and special experience. Fern was super sweet with the baby, and was patient through all the normal baby shenanigans. She captured some wonderful moments of our little guy laughing, and some absolutely stunning shots of his cute little baby feet in the light. I really enjoy looking back on the photos and remembering what a fun, low stress session it was. And she was very reasonably priced, too. Fern is a fantastic photographer and knows exactly what she is doing. She was recommended to me by my hair and make up artist I had chosen for my wedding. My now-husband and I flew up from Australia to have a San Francisco City Hall ceremony just last month. Since we weren't locals, we knew that we wanted photos with the Golden gate bridge in the background but didn't know where the best location was for the photos to be taken from. Fern was extremely helpful offering various locations for this for us to choose from and knew other locations for the other images we wanted. She always knew where to take the photos from to capture the best light for our photographs. Just check out all her facebook/website photos and you'll see that she has great skill in capturing not only weddings but also family shots, engagement sessions and children. I absolutely love her style and she takes gorgeous photos. We have yet to receive our edited photos however from the single photo I have seen on her facebook page of our wedding, I have complete faith that all the photos will turn out beautifully, thanks to her. She is VERY reasonably priced and I don't see how I could have chosen a more professional yet down-to-earth photographer. read more
