A smart doctor I wear Ortho-K lenses, but I needed a new pair of glasses. Problem is, when I'm not wearing my lenses, my vision degenerates by the hour, due to my myopia and astigmatism, which means my vision is not very stable. However, Dr. Chen, even though he is not the original doctor to prescribe my lenses, was able to "estimate" a workable prescription for me, and they work great! I greatly appreciate my eyeglasses and use them often. He also recommended changes to my eye-health (switching to soft) which has been hard for me, but at least I've listened. I'm pretty stubborn, but if you get me to change my mind, that's saying something. I've since moved back to the Bay Area, and have gotten eye-care at Palo Alto Medical Foundation, but that experience was sub-par. read more

If I could give it a -10. I would. I understand Covid messed everyone up but I in 3 months. I was unable to get ahold of anyone. I called and called and called. Their online tool for booking appointments is cool but what about if you would like a copy of your prescription. It's safe to say I now have a new eye doctor. read more

I came in for a visit because I had discomfort in my right eyes. I been coming to Dr. Chen since 2009 or earlier. I had other optometrist before but they were not as good as Dr. Chen. Dr. Chen is the nicest, friendliest, and warmest doctor I had ever had. He always greets me and when it is my time with the doctor, he does not rush me, he takes his time, answer all my questions and makes me feels like the most important patient. Had a bad experience getting a copy of my prescription and to top it off my glasses prescription was only good for one year. Every other optometrist I've gone to has a 2 year prescription. I've had the same prescription for the last 8 years. Sadly my optometrist didn't have appointments so I thought it was going to be the same, but wasn't. It was my first and last visit. read more

I would highly recommend Dr. Chen!! He is literally the nicest doctor I know. He is very knowledgeable and was very patient with the many questions I had. He has gone to the top schools too! Dr. Chen was able to see me the same day as a walk in without an appointment. His staff was very accommodating and nice to deal with too. It's so convenient that his office is right inside Costco. I loved Dr. Chen and his office before this happened, but have a very bad story from after my husband had a stroke and was in the hospital for a month. All he could do was read and watch TV, and his anxiety was so high that he needed to do those things to keep his blood pressure down to prevent another stroke. Unfortunately, he rolled over on his glasses in bed and broke them. I was panicked, worried how would he deal with things if he couldn't read or watch TV. I called Dr. Chen's office and told them the story. My husband had gone just over a year on his prescription but they would not give it to us until he came in to have his prescription renewed. They said he could come in when he was out of the hospital, but even then he could not walk or get around much for a few weeks. Most offices allow for 2 years, including other Costco optometrists. While we understand the need to watch your eyes as you get older, my husband had had 2 lens implants due to cataract surgery and his eyes were not changing very fast, and had visited his ophthalmologist within the past year so other checks like glaucoma and macular degeneration were up to date. I believe this showed bad judgment, not to allow us to replace his glasses under the circumstances. I put it down to his being a young doctor. With experience comes wisdom and the ability to understand when it's okay to break the rules. read more

I would drive to Fresno if he has a second office. --------------- Unfortunately... Now I refuse to shop at costco after I brought the car back for tire rotation on 4/3/12 I dropped off my car for tire rotation, upon my return an hr later (right before closing) I found they had left my bmw unlocked outside costco tire shop entry at the curb and my 64 gig iPod was missing. There was a reddish oil on the passenger's side leather, and they knocked by brake sensors loose making the dash light come on. Costco refuses to take any responsibility. (AND, the time before this they damaged the bottom edge car with improper usage of the lift and I had it repaired and repainted) read more

I went in there for new contacts and the services were up to par with my liking. I was indeed satisfied with the overall experience, made me feel like a little kid when i went to Costco with my parents. It was a regular thursday, i was having the best day ever, some can even say i was at bliss with my life at that moment, and to add to the ecstasy that was my life right then in there. My day turned into the worst, me a joyful, handsome, hilarious boy, or now man was minding his business talking to a lady next to him. Making her smile, giggle, laugh, well all the above; just know i think this beautiful old lady thought i was flirting with her. Obviously i wasn't, but that needed to be said to paint the picture of the confidence of how happy i was that day brought to me. Suddenly, i hear a deafening shriek "if u don't have an appointment please move over there!!" (obviously i had one) , it was i think the receptionist in the optometry room coming from the corner. She talked in a manner where me and the lady stopped stared at each other and looked back at her. It truly dimmed my light that day. I don't know if she was having a bad day, even week, but i'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and go with that because that's just the person i am. Actually no i'm not. No one is perfect and truly i'm not, she made me have a depressive episode when i got home so i hope she sees this and know the damages her bad aura gives. Had no issues in getting my prescription (Rx) and glasses here (inside the Merced Costco) a year ago. But now, just a year later while trying to purchase a new pair of glasses I was told that Dr. Chen's office wouldn't release my information because my Rx had already expired. I've worn glasses and contacts for a long time now and I've always been under the impression that an Rx for contacts expires after a year, while an Rx for glasses expires after two years. I called up their office (to try to figure out why this wasn't the case this time around) and was told that Dr. Chen wrote me a one year Rx because it was my first time seeing him. I tried explaining that it was my first time there because I WAS a student living there temporarily, but the receptionist responded with, "Oh, you're a student at the UC? We have an opening this afternoon if you would like to come in for an exam..." For UC students with the UC insurance plan: Dr. Chen is considered out of network and you can save $30 on your exam if you go somewhere else, there are many options around town. read more

I recommend Dr. Chen to everyone. I first went to him back in 2006. I was impressed with him then but I moved to Texas. I couldn't find a doctor in Texas that was as nice, as professional, and as knowledgeable as him. He makes my family and I feel like we were the one he was waiting for all day.
