I am an active-duty Military Spouse. I was charged for two services without my knowledge or consent beforehand that were not covered by Tricare Prime dental insurance-- a 2D color scan of my teeth and a visual cancer screening--over $80 unexpected cost out of pocket. The office confirmed receipt of previous dental records, including images prior to my appointment. I was not given an option to decline. I am not a fan of such business practices and do not recommend this dentist. A patient should always have the choice to either consent or decline service in these situations. read more

Dr. Ferrara is such a great dentist! From the moment I walked in I was greeted with a bright smile. When taken to the back the view I had was amazing. Her assistant walked me through each step as she took the x-rays and oral imaging and why they need these done. When Dr. Ferrara walked in she asked about me and told me a little bit about herself. She then asked if I had any concerns about my teeth and then reviewed my x-rays and imaging with me to show me where she sees concerns or cavities. They put together a treatment plan together for me before I left the visit to assure I knew my estimated costs for any treatment needed. I was also provided with a hygiene treatment plan prior to receiving my cleaning with Gen. She explained the whole process with me and made me feel just as comfortable as I did with the doctor. Do not be fooled. This office doesn't tell you all charges you will have. Here is my story: I came for cleaning service but because I'm new client I go through new xrays, observation, examination etc ... after which I am told your total is $317 after insurance and you have to come back in 4 weeks to finish cleaning . Little did I know when I arrive today and they cleaned and polished my teeth and reviewed my teeth again. Billed me 72$. And I didn't even see the doctor , who told me that she will take pictures of my teeth because she doesn't know what is happening with it. I was furious because I was never told there is another bill coming ... why did you force me to come back 4 weeks later to "finish the job" from previous appointment if you considered this appointment like it is separate from another??? Why 2 stars? Because I was ripped off. --- --- --- Here's one of the reviews I hate to write, but I felt very wronged by this dental office. This week, I've learned even more damning information, and I just feel like it needs to be documented. I had been going to a dentist out in Brandon for years, but I wanted to find something closer to my house. I discovered Dr. Upshaw's office in Downtown Tampa and it seemed like a good fit. The problem with an office in Downtown Tampa, is having to pay for valet just to park here. I don't even like to pay for valet at Bern's, so I definitely don't feel like doing at the dentist's office. Fast forward to being inside the actual office. It's incredibly nice, and definitely the swankiest dental office I've ever seen. Again though, the problem with this, is that you pay for it. I've been pretty anal about getting my regular cleanings during my adult life. Unlike most people, I don't mind going to the dentist at all - I like the feeling of being clean and refreshed. So it was quite shocking when my first visit resulted in Dr. Upshaw providing me quite the extensive list of teeth that I needed work on. It seemed like about half my mouth was messed up. They even told me that my root canal from 2008 needed to be re-done. I, being the trusting guy that I am, got about a third of the work done during my next visit. All was good, and I headed on my merry way. Then... I got the bill in the mail for several hundred dollars. I immediately called the office and was told that I was explained the amount to-be-owed beforehand, but that they would be able to take $150 off. I assured them that I NEVER would have agreed to getting the work done if I had known it was going to be that much. So there was no way that I was ever given a price breakdown. The reason that they are getting two stars instead of one, is because they did remove some of the charges (though I feel I still payed too much) and because everyone in the office was incredibly friendly. The next part is what really gets me though... This week, I went to a new dentist. I brought the piece of paper that listed all the work Dr. Upshaw said I needed. I still hadn't done 2/3rds of the list. The Dentist literally told me I needed ZERO of those things done. He said the only thing he couldn't say for sure on, was the root canal. So he sent me to an endodontist for that. I just went to the endodontist today, and was given a clean bill of health. No need to rip up my root canal at all. So it definitely aggravates me that I not only still paid Dr. Upshaw a ton of money, but that it was for work I didn't even need done. I didn't get a bad vibe from her in person, but I just question the ethics of this business. read more

I had troubling experiences with Dr. Upshaw with two crowns. Dr. Upshaw replaced a failing crown that she originally gave me about 8 years ago due to an open margin. Within the first two weeks, I knew something was wrong with the replacement crown and I elected to see a periodontist. She informed me that there was an open margin and I needed crown lengthening. When I underwent surgery for crown-lengthening, the periodontist noted that there was an excess amount of cement left from the crown placement by Dr. Upshaw; she had to file this away, which was very uncomfortable. Although the periodontist tried to save the crown, we decided that the crown had to be redone. Dr. Upshaw did another 3/4 crown on one of my other molars as well. I remember informing Dr. Upshaw of my concerns with the crown, but I felt as if she was dismissive with my concerns. I decided to get a second opinion at a dentist in Wesley Chapel. I was informed that there was an open margin and the 3/4 crown should be redone. Both crowns were redone by Dr. Ferrara. The first crown from my first paragraph was done with such expertise that the Wesley Chapel dentist was impressed. The 3/4 crown noted from the second paragraph above has altered my bite and now my bite is uneven. I told Dr. Ferrara about this, but she said she couldn't fix my bite without incurring more damage. Because of this, I told her to just leave it as is. Because of my troubling experience that took about a year to resolve, I do not recommend Dr. Upshaw. I also wanted to let everyone know that Upshaw told me i needed several fillings done, which i agreed to because i trusted her. Now that i have read other people's comments, i am extremely worried that i was a victim as well. Be cautious when letting Upshaw work on your teeth. read more

I'm not sure if Holly is always having a bad day when I have an appointment but she is the most unpleasant person to deal with. Most wonderful team of dentists! I have been to both Dr. Maria Upshaw and Dr. Leslie Ferrara and they have the sweetest personalities and always make sure you are comfortable . I have had a lot of dental issues resolved there which have all been pain free! No need to be afraid, just sit back and enjoy the beautiful view from the 14th floor window. I also want to note that all the dental assistants are super friendly and the hygienists, Susana and Keisha are great as well! I don't want to forget the office staff, Anna is wonderful at scheduling and Holly is terrific. Holly is extremely well versed on explaining your coverage. She takes a lot of time reviewing your coverage with you and will give you estimates on different options. My husband is extremely detailed on reviewing costs prior to any procedure and he always mentions how confident he is with Holly. read more

I, like many, feel very uncomfortable going to the dentist. I've actually never had a good experience at the dentist. Upshaw Dental completely changed that. Though I am still not completely at ease in the dentist's chair, I don't mind going to my appointments anymore. The front staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming and both Dr. Ferrara and the hygienist were amazing. I only have one complaint - while the hygienist was putting in a sealant for me, she accidentally nicked my lip with the drill. Even numbed, I felt it hurt a bit and on my way out I noticed my lip was swollen. The hygienist never said anything about it or asked if I was okay. After the numbness wore off, I discovered that my lip had been cut pretty bad and I had a scab on my lip for the next week. read more

I frankly come for Kesha. Hands down she's the best dental hygienist. I don't live downtown anymore and tried a practice here in the 'burbs to avoid the commute, but had a dismal experience. When asked about my experience at the other place, honestly put I said, "well, they're no Kesha". Great staff, the latest equipment, bundled in a sleek downtown office. Had a great experience here initially, but they charge a $45.00 late fee if you cancel less than 48 hours in advance. Which is understandable, but they are closed on Fridays and don't seem to consider that a business day for the rest of the world, so my Thursday cancellation of a Monday appointment resulted in that fee being applied. I wanted to wait for my insurance to renew after the New Year to come in, but they still charged the fee and the office staff refused to budge. I'm a new patient and feel very taken advantage of. I felt more like I was on a used car lot than at a trusted professionals office. I was new to the area and selected Upshaw as my new dentist without doing much research. When I initially called, I asked if they accepted my insurance. The answer was yes. I guess I asked the wrong question because my 100% insurance on cleanings and exams resulted in me getting a $142 bill from Upshaw at the end of my appointment. It was then that the receptionist said, yes we said we accepted your insurance, we do, but we are not a preferred provider, so your insurance only covers 35% of the charges, not 100%. Back to the cleaning: During the cleaning, the hygienist attempted to sell me some type of fluoride treatment not covered by insurance, then tried to sell me on an oral cancer screening not covered by insurance, then tried to sell me an electric toothbrush for an outrageous amount. Now to the exam: The saleswoman, ummm I mean dentist, examined me and came up with a treatment plan. Extract one tooth and replace, replace two fillings and put in a third. Total cost of well over $3,000. Since they "accepted my insurance" but were not a "preferred provider", my out of pocket was going to be well over $2,000. I decided to go to a "preferred provider" for a second opinion. He said he could fill the tooth she wanted to extract and the other work was not necessary. He filled the tooth. Total out of pocket was $140 and I didn't have any issues with that tooth or the ones she said needed to be done. Oh, and he did the oral cancer screening, which consists of 15 seconds running a finger along your gums, for free. Didn't try to sell me anything. To be fair, Dr. Upshaw has a very nice office with impressive technology, hardwood floors and a fridge with bottled water. I did this review now, more than 2 years later because I went to my "preferred provider" today and he and his office are so awesome that I wanted to recommend them. I thought it was a good time to contrast my bad experience at Dr. Upshaw's office. read more

Upshaw dental is a great office. Very personal but one thing I don't agree with is there policy on missed appointments. Never show up late or miss because you will be charged $55+ fee. I was told if I were to need an root canal that a fee would be covered because I had just received a 3 quarter crown and if I had/need my root canal cap it would of been taken care of. At any rate I really can't find the silver lining of an establishment that says something and does another. Just be careful when using this office :) read more

The Dentist and staff did great work, but they tried to charge me a co-pay even though my insurance doesn't require one. It was corrected immediately when I brought it to their attention but then a few weeks later I received another bill advising that my claim was denied because they performed a procedure that wasn't covered (even though they checked my insurance beforehand.) I was told by another patient that they're really good when it comes to cost estimates and that it was strange that they made this mistake. Well, the additional charge is the nail in the coffin for me and I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

Take it from a patient with a phobia to needles... Dr Upshaw is a godsend to the dentistry field. From a filling to a crown, Dr Upshaw knows how to administer novicaine. Pain free. Need I say more. But I will. The hygienist tolerates my persistent old fashioned dental cleaning. And with her guidance am proud to say my gums aren't irritated anymore and my checkups have been all good.
