I have worked with Fertile Gardens for many years and I must say the quality service, professionalism and amazing talent for my balcony garden-scape baskets are unparalleled. Every summer I arrive in the morning, drop off my baskets, tell them what I'm thinking as far as look and decor and let them "work their magic". Hours later, I get a call letting me know my baskets are ready and I always look forward in anticipation to see what they have done... needless to say, I am NEVER disappointed. Went to Fertile today to fill some hanging planters at our new house. Decided to check it out and give business to a local small company rather than a big box store. Was very happy with the decision at first. Great selection and the staff was very helpful. Unfortunately, it was recommended that we needed 2 bags of soil and ended up only needing one. With no use for the extra bag, I brought it back to the store. The employee that engaged me for the return told me that they don't normally do returns and was visibly annoyed. I said that was fine and I wasn't worried about the money but just didn't know want the soil to go to waste. She instead continued with the return but was incredibly rude in the process. Unfortunate that it ended up playing out this way. Not sure if I will be back. read more

Very disappointed by the service. Stopped in last weekend to purchase a few filler plants. Trying to support the neighborhood shop, I am happy to pay a premium for the plants I choose. I asked for a bag at checkout, explaining I was walking back home and understanding I would need to pay for one. The woman behind the counter gave me this ridiculous flimsy carrier which was clearly too big for my 3 plants. She almost dropped trying to hand it too me. Seeing I was frustrated, she did nothing to help. Awkward walk home, almost dropped twice-thanks!! No need to go here unless your spending significant $'s. read more

I needed a 6 foot tall ficus tree for my living room. I needed it quickly as I was having a party. Fertile did not have one on their premises, but Reuben offered to get me one within the time span needed. The next morning at 10:00 a.m the owner called me and informed me that Reuben had obtained a beautiful ficus that fit my specifications. They delivered it that afternoon. Fertile is a great place for your plant and garden needs. They have earned my future business by their great service. read more

We had some planting work done by Fertile. We weren't thrilled with how it came out but it could just be a matter of opinion. When I finally heard back from the owner and asked if they could come by and present an alternative solution she was very abrupt and said they were too busy to take on any other work. So while I appreciate tje small refund I was issued for the flowers, I would have thought the owner would've taken a more active interest in my issue. I would have been fine with waiting until their backlog decreased. I read a few other reviews where the customer provided similar feedback. read more

What a great neighborhood company! I run the garden club at a neighboring elementary school and called to inquire about having 10 bags of soil delivered. I cannot transport it myself and Home Depot was gonna charge almost a 100% delivery charge. Being a school run program, we cannot afford that. Not only did Fertile deliver the soil within an hour, but also at a fraction of the delivery charge. Will definitely go to Fertile for all our gardening needs in the future! read more

They have great people that work there but the owner was very rude. Our sales person couldn't have been any nicer taking her time and working with us on what we need. The owner on multiple occasions called her over to tell her do other things. The final straw was when she told her salesman to go do something else and she would help us. Well that didn't sit right with us. Basically at the end of the day the owner was just a very rude person with no respect of her customers or employees. read more

Buyer Beware! We used Fertile for our outdoor holiday decorating this year. While the decorating was beautiful, the experience with Susan and the billing was a nightmare. She asks you to set up an account with a credit card on file. You're told labor is $75/hr. When the work is completed, your credit card is automatically charged -that day -before you receive an invoice to review (they don't tell you this). I had to email her to get an itemized invoice, as I was shocked at the amount charged to my credit card. I received the invoice six days later via snail mail. There were a few discrepancies on my invoice. I was charged for 5 hours of labor at $75/hr plus $19.99 a piece for 3 extension cords. The staff from Fertile were at our home for 2 hours and I gave the staff 2 extension cords from my own garage! I understand that it's a busy time of year and mistakes can happen. They cancelled on us the day before and had to reschedule, so I assumed there was a mistake made in billing. I emailed Susan seeking clarification. I was informed that the staff bills based on supplies used and labor and that travel time is included ( we live 0.6 miles away!!) She said she would double check with her staff. 3 days later I emailed her again as I'd heard nothing. I let her know that we have time stamped video from our security system of the staff and also of me giving the ext. cords. She emails back and NOW says that they charge $75/staff/hr and 2 people worked on our job. That's not what we were quoted when we booked the job. My husband anonymously called Fertile yesterday and was told by the staff that they charge $75/hr regardless of how many staff. I emailed this info back to Susan who told me that her manager is a retired TSA agent with high security clearance who represented their policies correctly. I'm sure she did-$75/hr regardless of the size of the team is what she told my husband yesterday ( and me a few weeks ago!!) -but we were overcharged at $75/hr/staff member. She then told me that they were closed for the season and she "didn't know what to tell me". Also, her staff said they used my 2 cords, plus 3 of their own. Impossible! There are only 3 cords out there now-not 5!! I'm done with them and wanted to warn others so they don't have an awful experience like this. I am shocked to read the other reviews for this place; perhaps it was an off day when I went. We usually get our yearly flowers and gardening necessities and Gethsemane. We got most of what we needed and I realized I still needed a couple more plants after we left Gethsemane. Since I do not like the quality of Home Depot we decided to go to Fertile since its close to our home to grab a few more flowers. My first impression (second time I have been there but didn't get anything the first) was that the selection was limited. Also, in the time I was there I saw about 5-7 people working there moving things around and loading stuff but not one person asked if I needed assistance or have questions. At Gethsemane I have got so much assistance and great customer service I was shocked. I found a few things in which to purchase and checked out. The girl who checked me out was extremely unfriendly and actually rude with her lack of saying anything. When I said thank you not a thing was said to me in return she just walked away. I guess I was shocked how a neighborhood nursery of this size would lack in any customer service. We will see how the plants survive but I know I will take the trip out to Gethsemane for all my needs from now on! read more

The plants are flowers here are amazing! I have been going here for years and can attest that they have great quality for their flowers and plants. Their containers, flower pots and decorations are very nice, too! All of their products are fairly priced and are nice quality. I purchased a beautiful, fresh Christmas wreath here a few years ago, too, and received a lot of compliments on it. It's nice to shop at a gardening center where the employees are truly knowledgeable about flowers and plants and can give you an educated answer to your questions. I have long been a fan of Fertile. They always have some very unique flowers, plants, shrubs, trees and nice pots--in addition to plenty of the standard fare. Our gaden and flower boxes always receive rave reviews, and plenty of their contents come from Fertile. On top of that, their staff have always been very helpful, and they have been wonderful in their advice about selections, best locations and helpful soil supplements. We have been able to winter-over numerous evergreens and trees on our deck thanks to their assistance. Try to go during off hours since they are very pupular during the Spring planting rush. read more

My girlfriend, a nonnative speaker, and I were treated shabbily here. I was there two weekend days in a row. Both days my questions seemed like a hassle to them. We phoned today to ask politely if we could return some of what we bought as we realized what we had chosen wouldn't work out. I never like to return things and understand a frosty reception and I made an effort to find something else so as to make an exchange. But my GF was treated rudely and made to feel a 2nd class citizen. She was right to tell me to ask for a refund instead. Our experience at Gethsemane on Clark was different. They were polite, helpful and apparently did not feel hassled by novice balcony gardeners. read more

The owner is terribly rude! I try to shop at local businesses whenever possible, but the rudeness of the owner drove me to Home Depot. Her staff (several young kids) were drastically more helpful and more polite than she was. I was trying to return something, and I had my receipt and everything. She told me she was too busy to process the return and I should come back - as if that would work for me. I had to practically beg her to let me return something. The story was much longer than that, involving much more rudeness - but rest assured, she has lost my business. read more

We had Fertile come do a spring cleanup for our small yard. It too a couple try's getting them here after they rescheduled a couple times. The manager had been to the house and gave us an estimate. When their crew was here they had sent two guys and they started working. After working for a while they had run out of materials and had to leave to get more. They finished up and the garden looked fine. After a couple days we got our invoice and we were a bit shocked. The bill was considerably higher than the estimate and much higher than quotes we got from other companies. They had billed us for an extra worker which was not clarified at the time of the estimate and it appears they had billed us for the travel time when their workers had run out of materials. We fought the invoice and got a slight discount, but they are definitely not transparent about what they are going to change and the manager we dealt with did not estimate how much material was needed for our yard or how long the cleanup would take. We won't use Fertile again or recommend them to our neighbors. read more
