I love this piece of Shreveport heritage and I love supporting them. I always get super friendly service although I usually call my order in and pick it up to go. The inside is always very clean and tidy and every time I check they have a perfect score from the health department. All their food is delicious. I have been dining on their food for over 40 years and have never been unhappy with anything. You can't go wrong. I personally get the original muffaletta most of the time. Sadly they no longer serve the huge muffalettas that could serve several people and the bread is acquired from somewhere else and not as good as it once was but inflation is everywhere and they have to survive. I talked my wife into trying this place on our lunch date. This is a historic business in the city and I encourage all to go there for the nostalgia. As for the food, some of the pics on older reviews show HUGE muffulettas. Well... they don't make those anymore. We ordered the Centurion (Roast beef) & the Gladiator (Turkey). We split both and agreed the Centurion was just roast beef and bread. I had to look for the cheese to verify there was any on the sandwich. The Gladiator was good but I just like a meatier sandwich. The previous posts just misled me. Two sandwiches, 2 bags of chips, a mint tea (really good) and a can of Coke was about $27 with tax. Expensive but again it was about the experience. Go there for the Muffaletta= called "The Muffy" here because muffaletta was too long a word for the sign on top out front. A Muffy uses muffaletta bread with mustard and pickle loaf and Papa Fertitta's secret Olive Mix that the family still makes. Go there for the old family recipe of Italian Sweet Mint Tea. Go there for the old atmosphere and step back in time. Go there because American Pickers and others have visited. This place has been on my "To Try" list for a while. I finally came here a few weeks ago. Food (8.5/10) = Ordered "the Muffy." As mentioned by previous Yelpers, this sandwich is delicious and definitely worth a try especially if you live around the area. Besides the bread, the identity of this sandwich lies with Fertitta's olive mix ("olives, pickled vegetables, celery, and other spices in olive oil"). The ingredients of the olive mix are fresh, and don't overpower the other elements of the sandwich. I can't remember what cuts of meat they use or the different cheeses that were in my sandwich. I just remember what's important = the Muffy was awesome. Their "Italian mint tea" is refreshing and goes well with the sandwich. Ambiance (9.0/10) = There's a sign outside that states, "This property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States Department of the Interior 1927." This place definitely has history, and stepping into this building is like entering a time capsule. Take a look at the pictures, the signs, and the architecture. There are some elements that may remind you of a really old movie. Haven't seen many places like this around here. Fertitta's is truly unique. The Delorean to Shreveport's past. Service (8.0/10) = Southern Hospitality. Overall Opinion = I always prefer unique local businesses over annoying chain establishments which unfortunately suffocate this city. This place has been open for decades, which should tell you that this family is doing things right. WOW! I came to town on business and like to find the hyper-local and non-chain places to go. One of the local guys said 'do I have the perfect place for you!' We drove down off a downtown side street and down a little hill to an old building with a worn sign out front. We walked in the door and the fresh Italian warmth just grabs you. Fertitta's is home of the Muffy and great people. The Muffy sandwich was the accidental brainchild of Sam R Fertitta and is called the Muffy because it was too expensive to put Muffaletta in neon. We even had the opportunity to meet Agatha (Third Generation) and her husband, who run the place and they were kind enough to give us the history. It was fascinating. I look forward to going back. We were driving through on our way home and I had really been wanting to try a Muffaletta. I did a search for restaurants along our way and this place came up. So glad it did. I loved reading about the history. The family working in the restaurant were so welcoming and kind. The food was delicious. I got the muffy and my husband got the meatball poboy and my kids got cheese pizzas. My daughter was so excited exclaiming the pizza was just like the one ones on TV where the cheese keeps pulling from the pizza when you pull up a slice. The meatball poboy was seriously probably the best meatball sub we've ever had. My husband loves meatball subs and gets them whenever they are available. He's tried many and this was easily the best! Finally made it in to try an original muffaletta! Their hours are challenging and seemed to be closed every time I attempted, but I was successful this time. In fact, we were the first to show up today as we got there right at 10:30 and they had to unlock the door for us. The place feels old and you can tell it's the original spot. The sandwiches took about 10 minutes to make and we got them to go. Their tea is sweet and minty, a bit too much for my tastes. I couldn't wait to try the muffy so I unwrapped it in the car and ... it's kinda small isn't it? My first bite was mostly bread and olive spread. So was my second bite. And the rest of the muffy. Sure there were a couple slices of meat, but this didn't seem like other muffys I had tried elsewhere. I think Fertitta's may be the original but I'm glad others have taken it and improved on them, but this does give this spot an average review for me. I am a customer that usually goes out of the way to support local businesses so I tried Fertitta's. I really wanted to like this place. I love muffalettas so I thought I would. But this muffaletta just wiffs in comparison to New Orleans muffys. The bread is great, the olive mix is okay... but guys, they use bologna for the meat. I swear to God, it was like I made a bologna sandwich at home and threw some olive mix on top. Look, the sandwich was good (I happen to like bologna)... but this is not what I was expecting from a Shreveport landmark. We exited off of I-20 and entered an area that could be considered sketchy. Fertitta's is just sitting there by itself in a lonely little area. I was excited just from seeing it. I love dives! I have never been a fan of the Muffaletta sandwich. I am more of a turkey, roast beef kind of girl but I decided to be adventurous. We ordered the Large Muffy and I'm glad we did. It's the size of a small pizza - you definitely want to split it. Hands down - this is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in my life. The olive relish isn't too green olive-y. It's more mild like black olives. The meat and cheese are perfectly heated and the bread is great. I felt like I was on the back roads of New Orleans while sitting in Fertitta's. I don't know what else to say about Fertita's other than "Get the muffaletta, it's better than any one you've had anywhere else, ever." If you're dead-set against olives, however, the other sandwiches are certainly good, as well. The meatball, in particular. The large muffy is like $14 and it is HUGE. Meh.... Feritta's is famous for their muffaletta, which is about the size of a basketball, but has the flavor of a cracker. The olive salad they make is actually quite decent, but the rest of the sandwich is less than spectacular (not terrible, but it doesn't live up to the hype). The operation keeps bankers hours and is located in one of the more run down neighborhoods. Go once, enjoy the old Italian architecture, but there isn't a whole lot of reasons to return. If you want the best muffy in Shreveport, go to the little old "Papas" on East Washington (off of Youree)....and, hey, they'll actually be open. read more
