Three people ahead of me in line this morning ordered then walked away with nothing because they didn't have the thing the they ordered. Starbucks prices (not flavoring). It's a great spot to come and work or whatever you do on your computer. The music is loud so if you prefer a quieter atmosphere bring your headphones. Step away from the underpass wind and sneak in for their 90 degree heater. But whatever you do, don't get their vegetarian burrito..that was just a strange call on my behalf. Their team, awesome. The breakfast burritos are the most comfortable warm gooey thing you'll want in your mouth this year. But don't forget the green sauce, which they ship in and sell for a reasonable price, considering that it's the best hot sauce for Latin American food I've ever had. Cholula, Tabasco, Frank's Red Hot...this stuff makes those guys run home crying. This green sauce. DANG! The coffee is the best drip coffee I've had anywhere. It's a bit stronger than your normal drip, and it comes hot and ready to make your tastebuds sing and your fingers type. The staff are friendly and the regulars are sexy. Definitely the cutest and greenest coffee shop I've seen in Brooklyn thus far. They have coffee mugs to be used if you're staying in house in order to reduce single use cups. Bagels in the morning are tasteful but only have everything sesame and whole wheat. Coffee is delish and fresh, great snacks like a breakfast burrito and overnight oats.... avocado toast etc. The decor is nice too- couches in the front and back, windows stay open on nice days, and there are even games like monopoly to play. I live a block away from here and this is my go-to coffee shop for fantastic drip coffee and grabbing quick and satisfying breakfasts. Their breakfast burrito is SO good and only $5.50. Also their overnight oats are filling and not overly sweet. The interior is definitely unconventional but has a laidback and comfortable vibe. It's a large space relative to other coffee shops, which is nice. The employees are easy going and service is generally good. Nothing to really complain about! read more

Stumbled upon this coffee spot when I was walking to the subway. It was so different and unique that I actually decided to miss my train just to go in and check the place out. It has a very progressive vibe and genuine community feel. They are part of the "cup exchange" meaning you don't have to drink out of single use cups and can instead opt to use a real mug (for free). I was a little confused by their menu as they had typical coffee house offerings (pastries) but also burritos and what looked like a possible bar/bar menu. For the sake of this review I am only commenting on what I tried, which is coffee and their overnight oats breakfast option. Their honey lavender latte was tasty and not sweet, which I appreciated and the overnight oats were...overnight oats not much to say there. The coffee is one thing but the overall experience of just sitting in a such a bizarre layout made this coffee pit stop a really enjoyable. My 5/5 review is for the overall experience otherwise I'd give the coffee a 3.5/5. read more

Avocado Croissants. No need to say more. Close your eyes and order and you will love it. I stumbled upon this place on an evening walk. Don't let the facade fool you - the place is pretty big and you will see lots of people holding meetings or hanging there to finish some writing. The staff is friendly but they tend to forget your order. Be patient! The coffee servings are pretty generous - and pretty much on point. The joint also has some board games and an extended room if you want a little quieter space. Excellent breakfast options that I never get tired of. read more

Clearly built as a bar, but repurposed, according to signage in the windows announcing THE FLAT IS NOW A CAFE, and decorated with a lot of wood paneling, The Flat's BKSpeed Coffee looks like the sort of space a slacker would have at home decades ago. My 90's nostalgia was immediately triggered walking inside. Siouxsie and The Banshees "Kiss Them for Me" was playing while I dusted off the snow. More 90's songs kept coming. Even if this is my first visit, I've been here a million times before, sitting on similar benches (appointed with similar worn and crusty-in-spots leather). This coast or that coast, Berlin or Pittsburgh. I know this place. All that's missing are smokers. And deep conversations about how we'd all never sell out. I miss that. Nobody young now sells out, they just blow up. Commercialism is no longer problematic. In spite of my Fernweh*, I wouldn't seek this place out for its coffee or food, but the room is really comfortable. Service is good and workers are pleasant. And there's good WiFi. An A- coffice. Breakfast burritos are $5.50 and about as good as any you'd pull from a convenience store freezer. Coffee beans come from Forty Weight, a roaster uncommon in shops around here. It used to come from Brooklyn Roasting Company, so this is improvement. Forty Weight is based upstate in Ithaca, New York - the same place as Gimme! Coffee, which has two of their shops in Williamsburg. By comparison, Gimme! is my favorite roaster from Ithaca, New York. Their donuts are Moe's Doughs donuts, the statistically most performative cake donuts in Greenpoint**, are $2.75 each here. That's a 200% markup! Worth it? Maybe. Other things on the menu: bagels, breakfast bars, and donuts. Calling it a cafe is a bit of an overstatement. I think it's intended to be multi-purpose space. Which is even more of a throwback. But the coziness in here reads more like an apology after doing some lookup of the history of the space. There's an impressive sound system built for blasting music from all around what would have been a dance floor. Village Voice suggested that this propelled "wild parties that often spilled out onto the street, attracting crime, violence, and the ire of neighbors" when it was just The Flat. Last spring they promised there'd be jazz and indie rock bands playing at night. No hip hop like the Flat used to have. "We have to curb those crazy, rowdy parties," said the owner, in that Village Voice article. They still close at 5pm. I'm curious to see what becomes of things. As for my sense of nostalgia? So, Dom, bad news. A venue like yours runs on good will, not money. The more good will you generate in the community you're in, the more money you stand to make. Drinks are drinks. Most people don't come to a bar because your drinks are any better than anyone else's, UNLESS you already had a reputation for that. That does happen, especially if they're cheap, but assume a decent % of your customers just want to drink, in general. The aesthetic certainly helps but any good bar has that, so you're not doing anything to help yourself because that's the minimum you need to do to have a successful bar, especially in Brooklyn. There are other ways to bring in customers, such as have entertainment. You know what they say: you have to spend money to make money, and entertainment will separate you from the competition. Find some very good musicians who know what they're doing, and you can create some memorable experiences that keep people coming back. Paying a band any less than $100 per person is not going to inspire any musician to try to keep your gig, but you can get away with $75 in this day and age if they're local. You're certainly not going to have a regular working band for $65 per person. If you get an organization like Keyed Up to chip in, great. Two things you should not do under any circumstances. 1. In a LIFETIME, you can NOT suggest that you would pay the band less than they were promised if you want to have a successful business. 2. On this planet or any other, you CANNOT attempt to sabotage the good will you have built up, ESPECIALLY among young people. Young people are 90, hell, maybe 100% of your customers. They drink, and more than all the other age groups combined. If you want to sell drinks, you need young people. If you don't want to sell drinks, you're out of business. If you want to sell drinks by having music, have a flier outside at the very least. I played at Fiction in early June, and was there a flier outside? No, there was not. So it suggests to me that you have less interest in promoting your venue than the musicians, who at least told their combined thousands of social media followers about it. Did you expect them to march through the streets of Brooklyn putting up fliers for less than $100? You get what you put into it, Dom. And you know what you did? YOU TOLD A GROUP OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAT YOU WEREN'T GOING TO PAY THEM WHAT YOU HAD PROMISED! Do you know how many young people, the same ones who do the vast majority of the drinking, want not to get paid the amount they were (in your words) guaranteed? None, Dom. Not a single one, and they won't let their friends be in that position, either. Now, instead of promoting that your venue has a nice aesthetic, reasonably priced drinks (accounting for inflation, so you can even get away with higher prices for a while), and really, really good live music, you just flipped that. Now these young musicians, their friends AND their friends' parents will go out of their way, on- and offline, to promote the fact that your venue is a bar where people don't care about the drinks or food, and has ripped off the very musicians you need to sell said drinks. There's nothing special about your bar now. Your margins are about to get smaller, Dom, until they no longer exist. You knew what you were getting. They did more work than you to promote the night, and you admitted you tried to rip them off. That is the definition of turning good will into very, very bad will. Believe me when I tell you that musicians WANT their friends to come to their shows. I tell my friends at least a few days in advance, and usually twice. Sometimes they ask me when I'm playing, and of course I'll tell them. I want to see my friends! We all want the same thing! It ain't rocket science, Dom! Congratulations - hundreds, maybe thousands of young people are using word of mouth to gradually bring about the downfall of your venue. Word travels faster than ever. You'll be out of business before the year's out. read more

I stopped by last Sunday to participate in the vote for your favorite donut event. It's a really interesting lay out for a cafe. It used to be a bar/lounge. So it's quite spacious with plenty of seating. I ordered a maple syrup latte then collected my plate with the free flight of donuts. There was a choice of 4 different flavors to try. We're also given a pencil and paper to write down our choices. I thought it was a really cool event. I probably won't be a regular since its quite far from where I live, but I'll certainly keep it in mind when I'm in South Williamsburgh. read more

I absolutely enjoy every visit to The Flats. This is the perfect spot to come and grab a quick coffee and bite to eat. The atmosphere is funky and full of old Victorian style furniture. The music can be a little loud, so this spot may not be the best spot to take business calls. However, if you just want to work and enjoy some good music, this is the spot. This place is legit. I think they are coming up on a year as a cafe (used to be a bar). This place knows great coffee and amazing service. Each time you enter you receive a smile from a happy face behind the counter. They really start your day off right. That and they serve Forty Weight Coffee which is the best stuff around. I hope they get more light snack options, the breakfast burritos are not where its at. Visiting NYC for the first time, from Atlanta. Fell in love with this coffee shop for several reasons. 1) I LOVE local donuts. NYC has been mauled by an army of gross and souless Dublin' Donuts. Thank the deities for the Flat's because they sell local, fresh hand-made cake donuts. I had both pistachio and strawberry and am super impressed. 2). One day for breakfast I had a bacon burrito -- the secret here is the special green sauce. Don't you leave without it! 3) Tried both the Strider and Peru fresh roast. Indeed this is strong, speedy coffee. And tasty. 4) Tried the jasmine iced tea. It's apparent this shop cares about quality because me tea was fresh. NEVER GO TO A STARBUCKS AGAIN--ONLY COME HERE. He was a really chill guy and the atmosphere of the place was cool -could definitely see it as a place to hang around a drink coffee. I live in the neighborhood and I would say I stop in here for breakfast at least 3 times a week. The coffee options are great, the burrito options are even better! I love the veggie breakfast burritos and their spicy green sauce! They also have a great selection of different non dairy products to use for creamer, such as coconut milk, almond milk, and oat milk.
