Called in on a Saturday evening and scored a last minute reservation for dinner. The place was very cozy; walking in it felt like a little enchanted forest, with all the sparkling vines and flora floating around. There is an open kitchen so you get to watch all the magic happen. We started with a reasonably priced bottle of red, and ordered four plates to share. Notable were the fried chicken, which is unfortunately a special and may not be on the menu next time, and the cast iron cornbread. For dessert, the lavender pot de creme was wonderfully light and not too sweet. Absolutely loved coming to this spot for dinner during my recent trip to Boston! The restaurant is cozily tucked away in the back of a parking lot, but as soon as you step inside, it seems as though you've entered into an indoor garden. This lovely, fresh ambiance definitely sets a nice tone to the rest of your meal. Dishes we ordered were overall incredibly tasty. These included the cornbread, duck liver mousse, oxtail, and a vegetable option. All of the dishes are smaller plates that are meant to be shared, but it was definitely difficult to do so when everything was so well done. I'm planning on taking a short visit to Boston again some time soon, and will definitely try to make this a stop! read more

This place is wonderful and very consistent. They serve small (tapas) portions for sharing and recommend that for a party of 2 to order 3-4 items. We've come here two times already and enjoy their menu. I don't think they have anything bad on their menu. A few items that stand out for me are the blank bass crudo, Olives, fried chicken and the gnocchi. The prices are a bit high for the amount of food that's served. But it's worth it because all their items are fresh from the farm And served right to the table. They have a selection of oysters of the day but the offerings are limited and would recommend that you go somewhere else for oysters . Don't get me wrong I enjoy wellfleets and they had two others when o was there but for $3 each I would go somewhere else that has a better selection. For the food, ambiance and the service I am giving them four stars. I have been to Field & Vine twice in the past few months and both meals were exceptional. This place deserves much more buzz in the Boston restaurant scene. Drinks: The wine selection is solid. I really loved every glass I ordered. Food: Exquisitely executed shareable plates. Fire-roasted oysters. Ceviche. Braised oxtail. Even the turnips melt in your mouth. The dishes are creative and rich in flavor. I wanted to order everything and couldn't wait to taste what they brought out next. Ambiance: Possibly unlike anything in Boston. Warm, cozy, and inviting. Lots of wood and greenery, and an open fire at the heart of the space. Service: Friendly and knowledgeable. No complaints. Sadly, though I had heard nice things about this restaurant, I feel obliged to report that I experienced a very disappointing, off-putting interaction with the hostess, one that has dissuaded me from ever eating there. To begin with: the restaurant provides no email contact on its Website, and doesn't return calls very promptly. I'd heard it often booked up, so, I decided I would do my research in person (I was hoping to host a little birthday dinner), and simply pop by to see the restaurant and get a feel for its atmosphere. The traffic was pretty harrowing and parking is hard to come by, turning what ought to have been a 15-minute trip into a 45-min. one. When I at long last arrived, I expressed how excited I was to have finally made it, and said I was just hoping for a chance to see the restaurant for a moment and ask a quick question about a possible bday dinner. Instead of saying "how nice" or "happy to help you" (I'm in customer service, and I do this all the time), she said in a stern voice: "We would prefer you to email us." I was a bit taken aback, given that I was right there on the patio with her, a smiling and friendly presence, and the restaurant was largely empty. She repeated that she would find a card that has "our email on it." She could so easily have said, "I'll try to answer whatever questions I can, and then perhaps we could follow-up by email...." I was just trying to learn about the atmosphere, in advance of a long-looked-forward-to post-pandemic celebration, and (unfortunately) I did. It's a cold, unwelcoming environment. And I regret to say that I cannot recommend it.... What should have been a happy end-of-workday experience left me deeply disappointed. read more

I haven't written a review in years but I can't help but express my frustration and disappointment with the experience I had here. Like every other reviewer, I went with my boyfriend. The atmosphere is cozy and it's conveniently located next to backbar, (convenient ALSO because F&V doesn't have a liquor license). Most of the dishes are served lukewarm or cold (granted, we started off with oysters). The greens in the kale salad were gorgeous but overwhelmed by boquerones: which are much more pungent than anchovies and very, very fishy. I'm not sure why the carrots were prepared "roasted and chilled" when they would have been better served roasted to begin with. The accompanying sauce gribiche was pretty much an undersalted pat of egg salad and drowned out the fried capers and arugula. The sunchoke hummus was runny and came with dry crackers. It was ostensibly supposed to include a roasted fennel & onion relish but they forgot it I guess? The garlic meatballs & broth were perfectly salty and tender but I honestly can't believe we were suckered into spending $15 for 4 meatballs. The lamb sliders at Sarma are a STEAL comparatively, and consistently great. As I helped myself to a hefty glob of Aesop hand lotion in the bathroom I wondered whether we had merely ordered the wrong things. Did we somehow enter a Shallow Hal type of wormhole that distorted our entire sensory experience? Were we supposed to be too distracted by the wisteria vines to notice how much we were getting ripped off? read more

This place quite literally had some of the worst food I've ever had. I went shortly after the covid lockdown ended in July 2020 but I still think about how terrible it was. The strawberry's and goat cheese was fine because it is what it is. The mussels escabeche with curry tasted like yellow mustard and the oysters felt a day old. The cheese biscuits were actually decent but premix red lobster mix exists.. pickle veg was underwhelming. The salad was inedible due to the lettuce being doused in dressing which happened to taste like a wheatgrass shot. Fresh to the scene, Field and Vine, is a very nice addition to Union Sq. The interior feels like a forest oasis and the food is delicious. I was excited to see both olives and pickles on the snacks menu, two of my most favorite snacks EVER! The olives came out warm, which was unexpected, and to be totally honest, the olives were not great. In contrast, the pickles were fantastic. We then had an assortment of larger dishes. My favorites were the bluefish salad and the crispy chicken wings (you MUST get the chicken wings). The clams were unfortunately way too salty, we even sent them back. Arrestingly fantastic flavors, locavore/seasonal ingredients, charming service and decor. At Field and Vine everything is 20-100% even more delicious than its simple presentation suggests. We had the fortune to move in next door to Andrew and Sara when they were catering as Company Picnic. They consistently deliver amazing food, and at surprisingly reasonable prices (we attended a backyard dinner they served, and followed up by hiring them to cater our wedding). Everything we've tried is excellent: * focaccia; our favorite spreads were lemon garlic tahini and onion marmalade * lacto-fermented pickles (were those radishes in there? or parsnips? excellent crunch & flavor either way) * roasted poblano and feta spread * heirloom tomato salad (the ricotta was just right, and the subtle inclusion of hazelnuts was spot on) * gnocchi with foraged chicken-of-the-woods mushrooms * chicken-of-the-woods mushrooms with poblano sauce and pea shoots * "milk and cookies" but that totally undersells it; crème anglaise is excellent for dipping cookies in; the chocolate with chile in it was balanced just right * pot de creme (I'm out of new adjectives, but +++ on this one too.) What a wonderful experience from beginning to end. Went here on Saturday night. Its down a small ally so you might miss it if you are not paying attention. The sign is very little. The restaurant is small so make sure you make reservation it was pretty crowded. The ambiance was wonderful. Great place to go on a cold winter night. The decorations were beautiful. The have a good selection of local breweries plus classic cocktails. The food was amazing it's Tapas style so lots of sharing. We got the stuffed peppers, The sausage, and the cornbread. The cornbread was out of this world. What a fun place to go and I will be back. If you area aware of Union Square. Parking is horrible so give yourself a ton of time to find a place or take Uber/Lyft. read more

We went as a big group the day after they reopened after Christmas break, first the ambient of the place was so cozy and beautiful, it has great tall ceilings and a big open space, the kitchen sits back of the room, the space is not too big that probably fits about 25-30 people and a few more around the bar/kitchen. The menu has almost a tapas feeling with a bit more portion. With first glance, the menu seems so fresh and lots of creative mixtures of veggies, such as parsley salad (have you ever had that as a main salad ingredient, and the dressing was just perfect). I think since we had a huge group we practically ordered everything on the menu. The 3 main meat dishes include the sausage, the steak, the pork and the fried chicken fried to awesome crispy and ridiculous flavoring without even any sauce required. The steak cooked perfect medium rare. The gnocchi was funky and delicious. For seafood lovers the tuna tartare was excellent again with some not too rich but tasty vinaigrette, also another seafood dish to consider the clam dish. Overall the experience was great, the food was so creative and innovative, for you veggie lovers (especially beets) you will love the place. And for everyone else the place has every kinda mixture that meet anyone's desire. And last but not the least, you have to try the pickled veggies... I came with 3 friends and we ordered most of the menu. focaccia- worth it. their house made butter is insane delicata squash- amazing Beets- who doesn't love halloumi? Gnocchi also was to die for. Don't skip this. I would say the only "disappointing" dish (it's all relative), was the bluefish patte. This tiny place is right next to Back Bar down Sanborn Court, the little alley that branches off from Union Square near Bronwyn Restaurant. The dining room is very cute and great for a date. There is a wall of plants inside the large windows and a cool 'sculpture' made out of wisteria vines over the bar. Great atmosphere, and everyone who was working there were all very friendly. We had the scallop ceviche starter, which was phenomenal. We also had the delicata squash, the carrots, the bluefish, and the hake dishes. The hake was in a broth with some mushrooms. The flavor of the broth reminded me of kuchika tea, if you know what that tastes like. Really interesting. All the dishes were are amazing. The plates are small, but the two of us felt pretty full from those 5 dishes. For dessert, we chose the cookies, which were warm and gooey. Yum! Glad to find this cool little place. Went to Field & Vine with two friends and we had a great dining experience. Plan on booking way ahead as it is very popular and getting a table between 6:20 and 8:30 is not easy! Our reservation was 8:30, booked a month in advance, and our table was ready for us within minutes of arriving. The decor is hipster industrial and the vibe is cheerful, youthful, and friendly. Service was excellent and the wine and food were great. We shared cornbread with a lemony butter, brussels sprouts with cabbage, smoky tofu, and walnuts (yum!), duck confit, and seafood mousseline. All were exceptionally good. This is a small plates restaurant and the plates are on the very small side (compared with other small plates restaurants like Sarma), so order accordingly. They serve only wine, beer, and cider, so as a cocktail lover I was a bit disappointed, but no biggie. The wine and beer selections are excellent. And parking in Union Square is next to impossible, but that's just the way it is. We lucked out with parking right in front(!) in the back alley where the door is. This is a well hidden gem of a restaurant and we'll definitely be back. read more

My wife and I were only in Boston for one night and were told from a friend of an amazing meal they had at this hip new spot in Somerville so we decided to check it out. We were definitely glad we did, as this was they best meal I've had in a long time. They have a very warm decor with an open kitchen that the bar wraps around with really cool vines above it. The menu is all small plates (priced very reasonably), with a focus on fresh vegetables, and local meats. Everything was so good so we kept on trying more plates and definitely ate more than we needed, but I have no regrets. The highlights for me were the bluefish pate, the eggplant and sausage, and the Parisian gnochi with mushrooms. The chocolate pot de creme that we had for dessert was decadent. The service we had was top-notch as our server was very knowledge-able on every dish and all of the wines and paid very close attention to us, despite the place being packed on a Friday. We'll definitely be coming back next time we're in Boston. read more

This place was amazing!! So expensive, but so good. Love the ambiance and decor. It's a really cool combination of industrial and natural with plants and vines everywhere. It also has a really cool counter seating section where you can watch the chefs work their magic. It's best to share plates with who you're with. The suggestion is 2-3 plates per person. We ordered the focaccia with pear chutney to start. Focaccia was right out the oven and the pear chutney was sweet but still had a kick. Next came the smoked fish pâté, which was unreal. So delicious and came with the crispiest crackers and garnishes. We also got the roasted sweet potato, which was crispy on the outside and so tender on the inside. Loved the green goddess dressing it came with. Next came the potato hand-pie, which I also loved. It tasted like shepherd's pie but without the meat! The potatoes inside were spiced perfectly that it had flavor but wasn't too overpowering. Lastly we got the roast duck. I love duck, but this was one of my favorites. The pieces were sliced perfectly for sharing and was so tender and flavorful. Loved the crispy apples that came on top and the eclectic mix of flavors. Again, this place is expensive, but you absolutely get your money's worth because the food is all locally sourced and high-quality. Truly delicious meal. read more

Other than the salad, which was ok (albeit drowned in dressing) and the cornbread, which was decent, the remaining dishes were simply not good. Odd combinations of seasonings left us all looking for an ice cream parlor to wash it down when we left. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was good. Although I would have left a 20% tip on my own because the server was very nice, I was not pleased that it was automatically included along with a 3% restaurant surcharge. I've been to Field & Vine twice in the last year and thought it was exceptional. This time was honestly disappointing and it seems like they're trying to coast off recent ratings. We ordered almost everything on the menu for 4 people (the recommended amount). The plates were exceptionally small - it felt like each person was getting 1-2 bites per plate for a high price. Pickles were fine, salmon crudo was good. The cast iron corn bread was better than what they currently serve - you used to get more food with protein for the same price. Now, it's 4 pieces of corn bread with butter. The squash plate was a pleasant surprise, we enjoyed this. The croquettes were all potato, no blue fish. The aoili/mayo was overpowering. "Beans and Greens" was literally all beans, there were minimal greens and we could not taste any of the other listed ingredients. $17?? It was a can of beans in broth with 4 tiny pieces of chicken skin! The monkfish was overcooked - a delicate fish should not be rubbery like a tire. I will say that the sauce that accompanied it was excellent. The beef was still mooing, could have been cooked a bit longer. It had the same aoili-based sauce that 2 of the other dishes had. This was a common theme throughout the meal - different dishes repeated ingredients. As a $28 entree, you would expect to get more than what we did. We were not even full or satisfied at the end of the night. Lastly, to top it all off, the service was slow. Our waitress was slow at the start, and we waited 30 mins between the time we finished our food and when we got our check. We were not happy. For a $275 meal between 4 people, we were not impressed. We all agreed it was a C- meal and do not plan on going back any time soon. read more

Cool setting, nice staff but food was generally sub par. We were looking forward to the buttercup squash dish but it came out and it was acorn squash. The mushrooms were too vinegary and the arugula didn't do anything for me. The beets were ok, haloumi was delicious. Blue fish was delish. I even wasn't impressed with the pot de creme and basically went there for that. I'm a chocoholic. I personally think there are way better restaurants in Boston but just know perhaps this isn't the place if you're gluten free. I hear the fried chicken is good and we didn't dig into the meat dishes. Cool atmosphere like I said. Also beware there are no cocktails or hard alcohol to be had. We are happy to have wine and cider but good to be aware of. read more

I came here just before Christmas with my boyfriend and we both agreed - Field & Vine is one of the best restaurants we've been to. Everything we ordered was amazing, but the vegetable dishes are definitely standouts... it's awesome to see a place where veggies are a star as opposed to an afterthought. The pickles were so good that I had to order more! The wine list is smaller than at other places, but that's not a problem at all - there are some really interesting (and delicious!) bottles on there. The ambiance was wonderful and relaxing, perfect for enjoying the food. True to the restaurant's name you almost feel like you're in a greenhouse or garden, which is a nice escape from the city. Would recommend if you wanna post fancy food pics on instagram. Would NOT recommend if you have high standards for food. I went with two friends and asked for menu recommendations from our host. We ordered 6 tapas - fluke ceviche, focaccia with homemade butter and cranberry chutney, apple salad, beef tartare, napa cabbage and mushroom, and braised oxtails. To put it briefly - they put more efforts into plating than the food itself. The first four were cold plates. They were fine, and rather unimpressive. The fluke tasted sour but the meat was not very fresh and rather bland. Focaccia was actually warm and doughy, which was probably the highlight of the entire meal. Homemade butter recommended by the host was unspecial but the cranberry chutney was quite nice. Beef tartare and potato chips was okay. Apple salad had way too much vinegar in it and we couldnt finish. We didnt find much cabbage in napa cabbage and mushroom and it was mostly mushroom. I found it refreshing to add walnuts to the warm veggie plate. But, it was too salty and we couldnt taste the mushroom at all. The same problem with the oxtail - way too much salt. Maybe the chef was feeling particularly salty today, but it just ruined our meal and palate. We all drank like a liter of water during the meal. The date and parsnip cake afterwards was a more solid experience. In general, we only found the carbs - focaccia, potato chips, garlic bread and the crackers that served w/ ceviche satisfying. One common problem with all the dishes was that the flavor of the sauce and condiments was overwhelming, and the original flavor of the food was too faint. You dont want the condiments/sauce to overtake the food. The quality of the meal was definitely not worth its price. Even though the atmosphere was lovely and the host was friendly, the content of the restaurant is still hollow. read more

I went to the newly-opened Field & Vine with 6 friends and was truly impressed. Initially you are taken in by the light and airy atmosphere adorned by vines, flowers and plants from the field. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. But then the food arrives and it is difficult to concentrate on anything else. Because of the size of our party we were able to taste and share many plates and each one was better than the other. Dishes that are somewhat universal on many menus were one step above at this restaurant. Examples are, fried chicken, gnocchi, heirloom salad with fresh lemon ricotta, cauliflower, grilled beets, sausage and the best focaccia I ever had, with homemade butter, crème fraîche, onion marmelade and a dip. If you are looking for a little slice of heaven in the middle of the big city (or Cambridge), look no further - head to Field & Vine. From the minute we walked in, we were greeted and treated like family. There were plants and soft, sparkling lights everywhere, so our dining experience felt more like we were communing with nature and less like we had just ducked indoors to escape the cold.
