They also had a centennial exhibit, which was especially fun for me because Philadelphia has been doing so many events around its 250th anniversary. I love seeing how different places celebrate these big historical milestones. And did I mention it's FREE? I will never complain about a free museum. Honestly, I'm not picky. If you give me a museum I can wander around and learn things in without paying admission, I'm happy. There are also charging plugs around the museum, which is such a small thing but SO appreciated when your phone is dying halfway through a visit. The airplane hanging from the ceiling is also really cool and definitely one of those things that makes you stop and look up. The whole place has a really nice, relaxed vibe. It's quiet, there's plenty to learn, and there are places to sit and rest when you need a break. I really enjoyed just wandering around at my own pace. Free, educational, peaceful, and actually interesting. That's pretty much everything I want in a museum.

This time we saw a special exhibition on the former Mill Creek neighborhood - a black community that was demolished in the early 1950's in the name of urban renewal. The exhibit showed what existed before the City's attempts at urban renewal. We also saw exhibits on historical America, Made in St. Louis, and some general historical stuff. The museum is well worth a visit.

It was just collections over time, and all over the world. If you have time to spend all day, it would be cool, but we're going to wait a little bit until my toddler is older. She was very knowledgeable about Wright and Russell and Ruth Kraus who the house was built for and the only residents. The Kraus house is one of the very few Wright houses that have not been remodeled and contains the original furniture designed by Wright. It has a cozy feel from the time you walk inside. I was intrigued by the esthetic design throughout the home.

We didn't know if we could get on the tour that day so we first stopped by to see it and take some pictures. We met an intern and found out that we could get in on a tour about 2 hours later. So we paid our fee and went to see Frank Lloyd Wright's mentor, Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building in downtown St. Louis. I believe this is one of Sullivan's best work still standing. When we returned for the tour I was stunned. This is a great, late house by Wright that has many magical and playful elements to it. It's has most of the original furnishings and something totaling unexpected in a Usonian house--art glass windows. The tour guide was new and did an excellent. Everyone involved in this project should be very proud of the work they've done, and continue to do.

It is not in the nicest of neighborhoods, which would explain why the door is locked and you have to ring a bell to be let in, even during business hours. Inside, there is a gift shop area where you can purchase a variety of miniature items. Many of them are vintage, although I recognized lots of them as pieces I've previously purchased on Amazon too. The word "vintage" is probably the most appropriate here. The whole place has a smell like an antique store and most of the houses look to have been built in the 1970's-1990's. There are many intricate houses and dioramas, so many things to look at! My personal style is more modern rather than grandma-chic, but I definitely appreciate the love and attention that went into building each of these pieces. Most of them are donated from family members when the artist leaves an estate behind. It was a really fun visit and I'm glad to have checked out the museum.
