It is very fulfilling to learn about where we people came from, how we got here, who and what directed us, as well as when we evolved into the beings we are. Our predecessors paved the way for us in many aspects. They faced several different types of problems which they had to solve in order to survive, as we do in today's world; however they did not have the technology we have today to guide them in finding the solutions for these problems like we would be able to through the use of scriptures found in the internet, books, and other guides. Not only are we able to study these people (the ones that still remain) in anthropology, but we are able to acquire knowledge about how the Homo sapiens evolved into the myriad of cultures present in the twenty-first century. We can attend an exhibition, which would help us understand our origins, in a museum such as the Field Museum in Chicago. The one specific tremendous exhibit worth seeing in this museum is The Ancient Americans. This exposition opens eyes for the contemporary commoner through the presented divergent as well as convergent viewpoints of the many indigenous people and anthropologists. The gathered information about these tribes or societies is demonstrated through multifaceted angles, and for this very reason this exhibit allows for the modern mid-twenty American male to be able to interpret this information. This display is depicted this way for the reasons of having the people from the outside of such a culture to be able to compare and connect their lives with the lives of the culture of these Ancient Americans. The curators were considerate about the interest of the public; therefore, they want to ensure the satisfaction and inclusion of the cultures of peoples who reside in today's society, especially due to the fact that we all are a breed of the different experiences of our ancestors. The curator's voices are the responsible medians which fulfill the requirements of the Public Interest Anthropology in these compromising depictions of the indigenous forefathers of the Americas. We cannot discredit our precursors for the hard work they put in through their diligence and determination; for it is thanks to them that we are able to live in the technologically inclined society of today's world. I believe the ways that this exhibit demonstrates the indigenous people's culture is more than sufficient because it allows for everyone to connect with the culture on one level or another regardless of race, gender, and origin of the person venturing the exhibition. I concur with Sabloff arguing that we need museums because they assist us people to get in touch with our inner self as well as strengthen our interpersonal bonds with the people around us. The curators, visitors and the indigenous people all rely on each other in multiple fashions for survival. The entire system in our world functions as a whole of the parts; we can understand this concept of holism by learning about the parts (other cultures) and comparing them through comparativism. We can do this by exposing ourselves to the different cultures and learning about them through their viewpoints and not our own so to not be ethnocentric. read more

The Field Museum is one of Chicago's major institutions, and it earns that status across nearly every section of the building. I walked into a museum that requires serious time to cover properly, and comfortable shoes were not optional given the distances involved. The dinosaur collection is the main draw for most visitors, and it delivers. The T. rex is the centerpiece, one of the most complete T. rex specimens ever discovered. Seeing it in person gave me a sense of scale that photographs do not convey. The fossil collection extends well beyond Sue and covers enough ground that anyone with an interest in paleontology will find themselves spending more time in those galleries than planned. The temporary After the Age of Dinosaurs exhibit adds further depth for anyone who wants to follow the story beyond the mass extinction. For visitors coming specifically for the Pokemon Fossil Museum exhibit, the connection between the game's fossil Pokemon and real prehistoric creatures is handled thoughtfully, with the exhibit drawing direct parallels between the fictional designs and the actual specimens they were inspired by. It works well as an entry point for younger visitors who might not otherwise engage as deeply with the paleontology on its own terms. Beyond dinosaurs, the museum covers ancient Egypt, ancient China, gems and minerals, taxidermy, and natural history across a breadth that makes it genuinely difficult to prioritize. The gems section surprised me as someone who came primarily for the fossils, and it is worth seeking out. Admission is on the higher end for a museum, though Illinois residents have access to discounted and free days worth checking in advance. Bringing my own food is worth considering, as the on site dining is convenient but priced accordingly. 1 star! This museum has gone DOWN HILL sadly as I used to love this place. First off all the RUDE African American Lady on the side of the museum would not let us enter from her gate. She said the museums closing in 45min so we can't enter from her gate anymore like WTF? We already have pre-paid tickets why not let us in to meet the rest of our group already in. She was trying to convince us to call them to come out to meet us instead and to just skip even entering the museum at all. So we walked ALL THE WAY AROUND to the front entrance and they let us walk right in, again TOTALLY RUDE and LAZY that she didn't want to work anymore and let us in and she arbitrarily stop working/letting anyone in her gate 45minutes to closing. This was on May 31st, 2026 BTW if you want reference to who was working that day. Then to make things EVEN WORSE.....there was some cracked out drugged out teenager like totally methed/tweeked/cracked out with no clothes on the 2nd floor. Security did not remove him from the museum instead they just let him act like a total cracked out mess and then he starts vomiting all over himself and that entire section like WTF??? So they let this guy and his friends/family just disrupt that entire middle section of the 2nd floor to do this? Like why didn't security just kick him and his group out of the museum? He was freaking naked and vomiting and high as hell??? Was there even security working that day? Again this was May 31st, 2026 about 30minutes until closing if you need reference and want to even check security cameras of both of these horrible situations that occurred. This visit was so bad we may just skip this museum all together next time and maybe you should too unless you want a naked crackhead teenager vomiting all over you! read more

This was my last stop on Saturday while I was in Chicago, and it was actually my first time visiting the Field Museum. I'm honestly so glad I finally got the chance to go. First off, the front of the museum is so elegant and beautiful. As soon as you walk in, it honestly reminded me of the movie Night at the Museum, which made the whole experience even cooler. One thing I didn't know before going was that they were closing early that Saturday at 5 PM because there was an event happening at the museum. Because of that, my family and I had to rush a little and pick and choose which areas we wanted to see. We went through the gift shop and checked out the Dinosaur Evolution exhibit where we got to see SUE the T. rex. It was honestly so cool seeing her in person and learning about the history behind dinosaurs and their evolution. I was also hoping to get the extension to see the Pokémon fossils, but unfortunately they were already sold out for the day! Definitely something I'll have to try for next time. We also got to see the Grainger Science Hub, Native Truths, and a bunch of other exhibits and galleries. There was honestly so much to see that I wish we had more time. I'd definitely plan things out better next time so I can see more of the exhibits and galleries without feeling rushed. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit and would recommend the Field Museum to anyone who enjoys museums, history, dinosaurs, or just places where you can spend hours walking around and learning new things. Greetings, this is jimmy, again. As you know, I always begin with a 2.5 star rating system, and then rate the venue up or down from there, based on multiple attributes. The Field museum contains a massive collection of exhibits, and the wide variety of cultural history gives one plenty of options to explore when visiting. It is a fairly large building,so you can expect to spend a fairly long amount of time here if you wish to get a good look at everything. That being said, it is possible to simply spend an hour or two at one part of the museum, and still enjoy yourself. As you know, clean, good quality restrooms are of a high value to me, and thankfully, the field museum has very clean, high quality restrooms. However, the museum does tend to get fairly busy, thanks to a well earned amount of visitors, meaning that there will usually be a small wait. overall, I will be rating the Field Museum with a 5 Starting with two point five stars, the diversity of the numerous exhibits raises it by one star, the ability to spend anywhere from an hour to a a few days there raises it by one star, and the higher quality restrooms raise it by yet another star, though the inconvenience of waiting for a restroom and it taking a while to walk from point A to point B does bring it down .5 This is Jim, signing off. read more

I hate to have to give the Field Museum 3 stars but I had a very unfortunate incident at their restaurant. First of all the prices are ridiculous but I expected them to be, nevertheless my husband and I decided to purchase orders for our family. We spend over $50! We asked for cups for water, and my 6 year old went to the fountain drink machine and did not know that the cups were for water only, and he got Sprite instead. When I realized what he had accidentally done, I told him not to worry about it and proceeded to eat our lunch. A few minutes later a female employee came to our table and was very rude and told us "who's the wise guy who did this?!". We thought she was trying to be funny and laughed along with her. She then said, "seriously, who's going to pay for this?!" I then said that my child had accidentally gotten Sprite instead of water! She then proceeded to take the cup from my son's hands and walked away! Very rude of her! I had never been mistreated in such format! I wish I could've gotten her name or asked to speak to a manager, but my mindset was to calm my son who was crying and leave immediately! Very upsetting and I hope this type of service is discontinued. read more

Great place to stop by if you're visiting Chicago. I recommend buying a city pass. It includes tickets to the aquarium, Willis tower, Chicago 360 (John Hancock), field museum and the art institute of Chicago. You're basically pre-purchasing the tickets and you're in a fast pass lane. It's definitely nice when you're trying hit all the touristy sites on the weekend! There's a ton to look at. On the back of the visitors guide is essentially a scavenger hunt to see 12 works of art under an hour. After walking around the city all day, we decided to follow the list. We some how managed to get distracted and lost. It's pretty difficult to navigate thru all the exhibits since only the first floor has access to all areas. You'd probably need to spend days here to really enjoy and learn about all the works and exhibits. City pass included an Audio guide which was nice. You could listen and learn as you walked around. There are a ton of friendly staff members to help direct you when you're lost! read more

Recently visited the Field Museum and had such a great experience! We grabbed tickets online for $30 each and went on a Saturday morning via public transit, so I can't speak to parking, but getting there was easy. The moment you walk in, you're immediately wowed by the massive displays. From towering pterodactyls to giant totem poles and the historic elephant models from the museum's early days, it feels grand right from the start. The exhibits truly have something for everyone. We explored detailed animal displays, wandered through the Ancient Americas section, and spent time learning about Tibet, ancient China, and Earth's history. Of course, seeing SUE the T. rex was a highlight. Even after nearly six hours, we still felt like we barely scratched the surface. Overall, it was immersive, educational, and absolutely worth the visit. I'd happily come back to dive deeper into the exhibits we missed and check out anything new they've added. read more

Simply horrid experience! The museum itself is lovely, but the staff is rude and unworthy of the educational experience of the atmosphere! I've heard of reverse discrimination in the states (whites being treated differently by the blacks), but my goodness, it's so egregious that I"m surprised there aren't laws against it! If they'd been hired at the British Museum, white-black or plaid, they'd be out on their ears! Horrid, horrid place and so far from anything that it isn't worth the visit, truly! The exhibits are nothing you couldn't first, and better, see in Europe so save your money! My experience here in Chicago in general has made me homesick for London! read more

What is not to love about the natural history and special exhibits at the Field? Tell me! (I'm waiting....) It's a great escape during the winter months, but I like visiting all year round. Get the City Pass from a Chicago Public Library and you'll save. If you're a tourist, make this part of your Chicago experience. So, Sue is no longer a part of the Great Hall, but the Field is still a world class natural history museum. Ample parking in the lot across the street, or Uber/Lyft, it there. We love this museum. We started coming when my son was 2, and we come about once every 2 months. Now that my daughter is 2.5 years old she also begs to come. I have been about 100 times but have seen very little outside of the Sue movie and the evolution exhibit - specifically the fossil dinos. It doesn't matter though, every time I go I learn something new. The evolution exhibit is fantastic for all ages. The fossil collection is mind boggling. Tickets are extremely expensive so we always buy the membership for free entrance, free coat check and discounted movie tickets. It is worth it if you go a couple of times a year. read more

This is an amazing museum. Second time visiting this and still wowed by the sheer size and scale of this ship. Excellent on board attractions for all ages. So many great photo opportunities (though you may need to be patient until planes are free of other people). We got there prior to opening and it was busy. Come lunch time it was PACKED. Get there and get on board as early as you can. Enjoy the docent, volunteer and former service mens tours and insights to the ship. They have so many tales to tell. Take a decent wide angle and flash unit for when inside the interior of the ship. read more

Our family had a fantastic time at the Field Museum in Chicago! There's so much to see and explore for all ages. Sue the T. rex was a highlight, and the exhibits on ancient civilizations and Cats Predators to Pets exhibit was fascinating. I've been going to the Field Museum all of my life and have always enjoyed it. The exhibits are spectacular and incredibly informative and I've learned so much over the years that I can't even think about it. So why only 3 stars? Because after viewing the documentary "Dinosaur 13" and learning that the discoverer of the dinosaur was not even invited to the unveiling put a very sour taste in my mouth. I love this place, I have ever since i was a little girl and saw the mummy exhibit & the doll house. My sister & her husband took me here for my birthday a few years back to see the more recent mummy exhibit and i loved it, what a great birthday present!. The only problem I have is that it is so expensive to get into some of the traveling exhibits, I feel like they could get more visitors if they knocked $10 off of the ticket price and make more money. read more

Our favorite of the big Chicago museums. My husband has the membership so we both get in free, even the ticketed exhibits! They are always getting new exhibits here, so even if you go often, there is usually something new to see. The food in the snack bar is actually pretty good, and not too expensive. They even offer alcohol and coffee. I suggest going on weekdays if you can, as the weekends are super busy. Nice gift shop, but very pricy. read more
