Originally opened in late 1893 early 1894 and moved to the current location in 1921... Stepping inside the Field Museum is like entering a temple of natural history. The sheer scale of the building, with its grand architecture and vast halls, is impressive in itself... With 30 standard (permanent) exhibits and up to six additional temporary exhibits the museum encompasses three floors and over one million square feet. It's collections include approximately 40 million artifacts and specimens. The scale of this place is quickly brought into perspective from the minute you walk through the entrance with a display of lifesize elephants and immense dinosaur skeletons. The Field Museum in Chicago is home to Sue, the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered, and Maximo, a Titanosaur, the largest dinosaur known to walk the Earth. The museum also boasts a massive collection of mummies in the Inside Ancient Egypt exhibit. 23 human and over 30 animal mummies dating back to 2400 BC... These exhibits were my personal favorites! The Field Museum successfully balances the grand with the specific... Plan on spending at least four hours here! More than 1.3 million people visit the museum annually. Hungry? The Field Museum in Chicago has multiple food options available for visitors. Near Soldier Field, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium parking is plentiful. But once again...it's not cheap. If you want to drive and park your own vehicle in Chicago... They're going to make you pay for it! Lol While it might take more than one visit to truly absorb everything this museum has to offer... One of my favourite museums ever visited! When I say this place is huge, I mean it is HUGE. It is enormous!! You will get your 10,000 steps daily in! We got the city pass and the field museum was one of the activities included! This museum was not only showcasing dinosaur fossils. From exhibits about dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, gemstones, animals, and to different cultures from around the world.. it is a fun and must visit place to learn about science, history, and the world's coolest discoveries--all in one building!! I loved the room that showcased all the animals that ever existed. Each room is a different exhibit and it is so interactive! It's not a "boring" museum, if that's what you're wondering. Whether you go there with friends, families or even classroom field trips, it is all worth it!! I was so exhausted by the end, but genuinely learned so much. I didn't get to go through all the room and would love to visit again! read more

I remember coming here as a kid, many moons ago. My son and I came here as it was included on go city pass. This is my 2nd favorite museum after Griffin. There was a lot of stuffed or taxidermied animals. There was a sign that most came from deceased zoo animals. Some taxidermy was very vintage and probably in dire need of dusting and freshening up. I did get lost trying to exit Sue the dinosaur area. I did take Emergency exit to a floor below as it seemed I was walking in circles. One thing I thought was weird is security guard was guarding a fake alligator display when they should have been guarding the jewels. There were cameras everywhere though. It was not crowded today but some rowdy children were unsupervised. read more

Amazing exhibits!!! Go for the science and awe. I could have spent days there taking it all in. The details and richness in many of the exhibits are GREAT! I took my seven year old but think that the normal exhibits are probably better for children who are a bit older, maybe ten and up. The Pokemon special exhibit was great for kids. It does get crowded so trying to be near the front of the line or at the back with a chill, leisurely pace is a good idea. The entries are timed and groups sort of walk through like a snake. Merch is available with a special voucher only and the worthwhile items are the Excavator Pikachu plush and t-shirts unique to the special exhibit. Most of the offerings are available online at similar prices. But be ready for crowds, expensive food, unruly school/camp groups, and restrooms that have no paper towels. We went on a Thursday in July and walking was a struggle in the main hall. My mom got stepped on. read more

Exhibits are fun for adults, not so much for kids. After the dinos and pokemon are two really good kids Exhibits (given they are expensive for the entire family) Bistro food was fantastic, and fresh and staff was very friendly and helpful! My wife and three kids really enjoyed the choices, and the beer I had was very refreshing! Field store is very lacking. Most of it feels like cheap buys, or something you would never actually want. From books that are outdated or books that you buy and forget about or gift them to someone you hate. Clothing is really all they have that is decent. Pokemon store is 3 stars at best. They have no product, maybe 8 items total spread out theough the entire store and it is clear they were supposed to have more and did not expect to sell so quickly. read more

Had a great time with my family today. Tons of exciting things to do. Lots of cool exhibits. Wish I had more time to look around. You could spend all days here to see everything. They have a few restaurants and ample restrooms. If you are former military or law enforcement bring credentials. They have a very generous discount available for up to 6 guests. It cost me $54 for my party of five. Parking on the other hand!!! Tricky to get to. And ridiculously overpriced at $32 a vehicle. There is cheaper parking nearby. But when traveling with someone who are impaired, there are limited options. read more

After spending several leisurely hours on the lakeshore, we were too late to get tickets to the Shedd Aquarium. Instead, we pivoted and came here to the Field Museum. Of course, we had to see Maximo the Titanosaur and some elephant friends strategically displayed in the oversized lobby. We also checked out the China, jade, meteorite, and gemstone displays. I loved learning about ancient China and was impressed by the cultural artifacts, books, paintings on silk, clothing, and bronze work. The intricacies in the jade carvings on bowls and jars were remarkable. I was in awe of the artists and craftspeople who produced these artworks. I also enjoyed spending time in the Grainger Hall of Gems. According to the website, the collection comprises 600 items. I loved the history associated with the gems, sparkly baubles, and the creative settings. There was also an interactive display that brought out the kid in me; I loved it. read more

It's a good place to spend a few hours. I'm a museum buff, but do not anticipate returning to the Field more than once every few years despite living in Chicago. Many of the exhibits are interesting - at the time I visited, there was a great reptile exhibit and a fascinating Pacific section. There is also a cool Maori structure that is an actual, living place of worship, where you must take off your shoes and can spend some time in silence. The gems section was truly underwhelming, and the exhibits/museum was not thoughtfully arranged/curated. I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer number of exhibits in the corridors and the number of children/teenagers running around. The VR experience was also incredibly unimpressive. I cannot comment on the cafeteria as I did not visit it, but there are plenty of vending machines with snacks and drinks. The bathrooms were spotless. The staff at the museum were nice and efficient. It is possible to visit the Field for free on certain days of the months if you're an Illinois resident. UChicago students can visit for free, and there are other discounted student tickets. The Field is well connected by public transport, including the bus and the Metra. I do not think that the Field is a must-see if you're visiting Chicago. If you have limited time, there are better museums in the city that you should prioritise, such as the Museum of Science and Industry and the Art Institute. If you're a Chicago resident, I would recommend a visit during a free day. read more

Pokémon fossil Exhibit. Please don't waste your money on this lame exhibit. $30 to get in, nothing but a few fossils that resemble Pokémon and a few Pokémon sculptures. Super underwhelming and a small exhibit for the price we paid. Very disappointing read more

I really enjoyed this museum! Some museums require a lot of reading with less things to view. However, this museum was the opposite. It was more for viewing pleasure, which I appreciated. Of course, if you wanted to read about the subject, the information is there. I think setting aside 4-5 hours here is sufficient. The taxonomy here was exquisite. The work was so life-like! I love how they had "hidden" animals throughout that exhibit so kids can interact. I also like how there was an "I Spy" component to it. My boys enjoyed the bug exhibit, especially the part where we "shrink." We paid for the Reptile Exhibit and thought it was neat. We were able to see live reptiles and snakes. However, there is a lot to see at this museum, so if you have FOMO, don't fret. I don't think you would miss much and can still enjoy a day at Field. haha I wanted to see more, but my two little boys were getting cranky, so we left earlier than anticipated. Although I didn't see everything I wanted, I still enjoyed the visit. read more

There are so many things to see here you cant even fit it into one day. They have a Pokémon fossil exhibit to (for an additional fee) for kids and Pokémon fans and I love that so many things are interactive as well as educational so they have things for all ages. The museum is HUGE! It's also stroller and disability compatible which is great. I had a really wonderful time and enjoyed every moment read more

The good: the exhibits were interesting, abundant and DINOSAURS. We even had a lunch of Dino nuggets and fries, and they were delish! The bad: a lot of stairs, the crowd can be overwhelming, people overestimate children's interest and good behavior, and some restrooms were out of the way down stairs and long halls. Having never been to the Field Museum before we considered it to be a must-see. We saw the things we were interested in, the dinosaurs, and maybe got our moneys worth. But honestly, I wish parents of young children would understand that a family outing to a huge, world class museum may seem like a good idea, but it really isn't. It's NOT fun for the whole family if you're juggling strollers, tantrums, escape artists, bad manners etc. The parents are stressed and the kids are NOT interested. Who actually is having a good time in this scenario? Just do yourself a favor when looking for that experience of a lifetime: know your children's strengths and limitations. Because when they're bored and acting up, and you're trying to manage their rotten behavior, you've engineered the perfect way to ruin other people's visit. Hope this helps. read more

We visited the Field Museum with one special goal in mind: our youngest son's favorite dinosaur is the Spinosaurus, and this is the only museum in the United States with a mounted Spinosaurus skeleton. That alone made the trip worthwhile for our family. The museum itself is absolutely outstanding. We started in the lower level, where the Underground Adventure exhibit was one of our favorite experiences. From there, we worked our way through each floor, and every exhibit seemed to impress us more than the last. Whether it was dinosaurs, ancient civilizations, gems, wildlife, or natural history, there was something fascinating around every corner. The exhibits are beautifully designed, informative, and engaging for both children and adults. We could have easily spent two full days exploring everything the museum has to offer and still found more to see. If you're visiting Chicago, the Field Museum is an absolute must-see. Whether you're a dinosaur enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for an incredible museum experience, there truly is something here for everyone. read more

The Field Museum reminds me of the museums I used to visit as kid during a field trip. You're impressed by all the cool things to see, and the museum is larger than life. You visit later when you're in high school, and the museum isn't as grand as you remember it as a young child. I loved seeing all the different displays of the animals and especially any dinosaur exhibit as a kid. The Filed Museum definitely covers plenty there. Tons of larger-than-life sized displays to see and take pictures by. The museum itself is massive. Visitors can definitely spend the whole day there if they wanted to. All the staff members were friendly and super helpful. Everyone was pleasant with taking group pictures of us throughout the visit. What I was really impressed with, was the amenities that weren't exhibits. There's a cafeteria style cafe that gives you an option to grab a bite and rest a little. They covered snacks, beverages, beers, some hot dishes (pizza, cheeseburgers, etc) salads, etc. I liked how there were multiple gift shop locations as well. I appreciate the location conviences. Children 10 and under will appreciate the Field Museum more than the older kids in my opinion. It's definitely worth checking out once regardless. Enjoy! read more

Museum was wonderful and educational. Exhibits were well maintained, bathrooms are placed in great locations. Losing a star because we happened to come on a field trip day and the children were climbing all over exhibits and touching things labeled not to. This was done in front of museum staff who did nothing about it. It was just sad to see history so disrespected and I can't imagine their exhibits will last while being treated like this read more

I came to Chicago for the first time because I was running the Chicago marathon. When coming to the city, Field Museum was my top attraction. I knew Sue the Tyrannosaurus-Rex was there, and wanted to see her. The museum is huge and has so many wonderful exhibits from the dinosaurs to ancient Egypt and everything in between. We spent hours here and didn't see everything. I could have spent an entire day here! I wanted to come back during my stay, but didn't have time. The Field Museum was on my dad's Chicago bucket list and recently I made his wish come true through a trip to the Field Museum. When we pulled in, I dropped mom and dad at the drop off point and parked myself in the lot off to the east entrance. I can't remember the full day parking cost but I want to say it was under $30.00. If you are traveling with elderly folk, you'll want to take the east entrance at the ground level facing the Shedd Aquarium. Once there, we requested a wheelchair for mom and security was able to deliver despite it being a busy weekend. As an elderly person, a wheelchair is highly recommended as the space is large (1.2 million square feet) and a lot of walking is involved. NOTE: If you're an Illinois resident or a senior living in Chicago or the state of Illinois, you will need to show proof of Illinois residency through a Illinois State ID or Driver's License. Some exhibits have been around since my school days (i.e. The Grainger Hall of Gem's section) but there are others which are fairly new. On the ground floor, Dad loved seeing up close Maximo the Titanosaur and from there we worked our way up the floors at a leisurely pace. We spent most of our time at the Robert R. McCormick Halls of the Ancient Americas. Disclaimer, this exhibit is large. We did not expect the amount of content and distance to walk. Although fascinating, keep that in mind. The Field Museum is an ideal spot for history enthusiasts seeking to know more about our planet and its people through the nearly 40 million+ artifacts on display. Take your time and soak it all in as there is plenty to explore! read more

I arrived around 1:30pm on Friday morning with my son and sister using using Go City All inclusive pass as we were visiting from NC. We had to use the east entrance. Izel was the staff who checked us in. He was helpful. Part of the pass was that we were able to do one of the exhibits. We did the underground adventure exhibition and it was pretty cool! There was one feature at the end that startled be a little, haha. The quality of the gallery audio overviews were not that great. The museum itself was LARGE! We didn't even get to see everything because of just how big it was. We spent 2 hours there. You could easily spend 4-6 hours. There was a lab where people can touch the skin of animals. It's was very informative and pretty cool! It was fairly busy. They do have eating establishments present as well. I would return to finish seeing what I didn't get to during this trip. Plenty of things to keep kids engaged and interested! read more

The Field Museum was my favorite part of our Chicago trip! My boyfriend bought us the CityPass and this was our 3rd stop. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this museum! I'm normally not a museum type of gal but this place was so interesting! I loved the animal exhibition! I told my boyfriend that I actually enjoyed it more than an actual zoo, because I got to see the animals closely! It seriously was the coolest thing! I loved seeing the huge moose, many bears, birds, baby lion cubs etc. I think that was more educational than a zoo. I really got to see the details in the animals. There was also an Egyptian exhibit with real mummies, there was a gemstone exhibit that was awesome as well. The main draw of the museum is Sue the T-Rex! She is the largest and most extensive Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found! I kept thinking of Ross Geller from "Friends" when we were in the Dinosaur exhibit haha. There was even a Polynesian exhibit that had a mini replica of a Tahitian outdoor market that you could walk through and a Tiki Hut. This museum was massive! So many great and interesting things to see! A Chicago MUST! read more

I visited the Field Museum during a recent trip to Chicago, and I absolutely loved it! It's a huge museum, so plan to spend a few hours here. We spent around 3 hours exploring, and did not see everything . I was the most excited to see Sue the T. Rex, and it did not disappoint! The exhibits are so well done, and the map is very easy to follow. They had a few exhibits that were an extra charge that we did not visit, but I do not feel that it took away from our overall experience. I would recommend that anyone living in or visiting Chicago visits this museum at least once! read more

We came to Field Museum on the 4th of July to visit the dinosaur exhibit with my kids. The museum is expansive and I wish we had more time to explore every exhibit. The ones we did see were fantastic ans kept my kids really engaged. Next time we visit Chicago we'll definitely be spending the entire day here so we can experience all it has to offer. read more

If you want to spot a mummy, you must first pass through a fake pyramid and then walk past the mummy behind glass. Keep moving, folks. Way too expensive! I had to use the restroom. All the urinals were taped off, and all the stalls had out of order except two. One of the two was for "tots" only. I had to use the tots only, and it's a long way down and a long way up. But what do you expect when you are paying hundreds of dollars to visit this place? I loved hearing "Daddy, I got to go pee" just outside the door. Hey, kid, I had to go too.:) read more

Listen, this isn't a quick stop between other places. Plan a whole day. Maybe two days. Just so many amazing exhibits. It was super cool the mini exhibits all over were designed for hands on learning. Multiple, multiple rooms, floors, walkthroughs, etc Separate exhibits that are TOTALLY worth the extra mullah. This was a great museum to check out in Chicago. There is so much to see and do. You can literally spend all day here. Most of the exhibits were very interesting and some of them are even interactive for kids. I did go to the cafe for lunch and it is very much like a cafeteria. read more

My kid has been really into gems and minerals lately, and she asked if we could see any somewhere. So to the Field Museum we went! Love the exhibit so much. They have pieces of meteors you can touch. Interactive displays to learn more. Ao many fun pretty gems and rocks and minerals to see. The coolest part though for littles is the Play Lab. It opens at 10, but it's like the kid-friendly mini Field Museum exhibits that you can explore and interact with. They have stroller parking and coat racks at the front so you don't have to keep holding them. There's a little nature area where kids can dress up as different animals. A pueblo where you can grow and pick the corn from the stalk, then pretend to grind it and cook it. There's a weaving station, a microscope station, a fossils and dinosaur area and so much more. Seriously, it was the best way to end our visit and get real wiggles out. read more

yes, there's a cafe on the main floor and a grill on the basement level. we ate at the basement location because it's more casual and easier with a toddler. They had burgers, sandwiches, and fries. Self serve sodas, condiments etc.

Is the 3D movie worth it? Meaning, does it feel like you could reach out and touch or is it just like looking at a 3D picture?

I liked the movie itself (I saw the Mysteries of China), but actually would have preferred that it had not been 3D. It’s not a theater that was meant for 3D movies and I think it would be better suited for regular format films

I booked my tickets in advance on the morning of my visit and walked over from River North in the afternoon. Upon entering the galleries, I went up the central staircase and immediately found myself in a room with my favorite Impressionist masterpieces, including works by Monet, Seurat, Caillebotte, Van Gogh, and Matisse...just to name a few. I wandered through the other galleries and continued to spot my favorite paintings from other art periods. I even found a mummy! The museum layout was a little confusing, but the galleries were well-labeled, and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable in helping me find my way. Thinking that I would only spend about an hour in the museum, I ended up staying almost until closing. Before leaving, I stopped in at the gift shop to pick up some postcards to commemorate my visit. I highly recommend the Art Institute of Chicago to anyone visiting the city, and I would definitely consider coming back when I have more time on my next visit.

The collections are stunning and expansive and truly breathtaking. The paintings are well spaced out with ample descriptions and information. Like most museums of this size and prestige, the building and the people watching are just as interesting as the art. Definitely hope to return someday as I've barely scratched the surface!

I wouldn't recommend it as a "Must See" for tourists, personally. However, I'm an art enthusiast and still thought it was a decent museum to walk through. The only bummer was the ice cream. We paid $1 per person for it and it was just one tiny little ball with a wooden spoon, and I could taste the spoon more than the ice cream.

It is very fulfilling to learn about where we people came from, how we got here, who and what directed us, as well as when we evolved into the beings we are. Our predecessors paved the way for us in many aspects. They faced several different types of problems which they had to solve in order to survive, as we do in today's world; however they did not have the technology we have today to guide them in finding the solutions for these problems like we would be able to through the use of scriptures found in the internet, books, and other guides. Not only are we able to study these people (the ones that still remain) in anthropology, but we are able to acquire knowledge about how the Homo sapiens evolved into the myriad of cultures present in the twenty-first century. We can attend an exhibition, which would help us understand our origins, in a museum such as the Field Museum in Chicago. The one specific tremendous exhibit worth seeing in this museum is The Ancient Americans. This exposition opens eyes for the contemporary commoner through the presented divergent as well as convergent viewpoints of the many indigenous people and anthropologists. The gathered information about these tribes or societies is demonstrated through multifaceted angles, and for this very reason this exhibit allows for the modern mid-twenty American male to be able to interpret this information. This display is depicted this way for the reasons of having the people from the outside of such a culture to be able to compare and connect their lives with the lives of the culture of these Ancient Americans. The curators were considerate about the interest of the public; therefore, they want to ensure the satisfaction and inclusion of the cultures of peoples who reside in today's society, especially due to the fact that we all are a breed of the different experiences of our ancestors. The curator's voices are the responsible medians which fulfill the requirements of the Public Interest Anthropology in these compromising depictions of the indigenous forefathers of the Americas. We cannot discredit our precursors for the hard work they put in through their diligence and determination; for it is thanks to them that we are able to live in the technologically inclined society of today's world. I believe the ways that this exhibit demonstrates the indigenous people's culture is more than sufficient because it allows for everyone to connect with the culture on one level or another regardless of race, gender, and origin of the person venturing the exhibition. I concur with Sabloff arguing that we need museums because they assist us people to get in touch with our inner self as well as strengthen our interpersonal bonds with the people around us. The curators, visitors and the indigenous people all rely on each other in multiple fashions for survival. The entire system in our world functions as a whole of the parts; we can understand this concept of holism by learning about the parts (other cultures) and comparing them through comparativism. We can do this by exposing ourselves to the different cultures and learning about them through their viewpoints and not our own so to not be ethnocentric. read more

The Field Museum is one of Chicago's major institutions, and it earns that status across nearly every section of the building. I walked into a museum that requires serious time to cover properly, and comfortable shoes were not optional given the distances involved. The dinosaur collection is the main draw for most visitors, and it delivers. The T. rex is the centerpiece, one of the most complete T. rex specimens ever discovered. Seeing it in person gave me a sense of scale that photographs do not convey. The fossil collection extends well beyond Sue and covers enough ground that anyone with an interest in paleontology will find themselves spending more time in those galleries than planned. The temporary After the Age of Dinosaurs exhibit adds further depth for anyone who wants to follow the story beyond the mass extinction. For visitors coming specifically for the Pokemon Fossil Museum exhibit, the connection between the game's fossil Pokemon and real prehistoric creatures is handled thoughtfully, with the exhibit drawing direct parallels between the fictional designs and the actual specimens they were inspired by. It works well as an entry point for younger visitors who might not otherwise engage as deeply with the paleontology on its own terms. Beyond dinosaurs, the museum covers ancient Egypt, ancient China, gems and minerals, taxidermy, and natural history across a breadth that makes it genuinely difficult to prioritize. The gems section surprised me as someone who came primarily for the fossils, and it is worth seeking out. Admission is on the higher end for a museum, though Illinois residents have access to discounted and free days worth checking in advance. Bringing my own food is worth considering, as the on site dining is convenient but priced accordingly. For a world class natural history museum that rewards a full day of exploration, the Field Museum delivers. read more

1 star! This museum has gone DOWN HILL sadly as I used to love this place. First off all the RUDE African American Lady on the side of the museum would not let us enter from her gate. She said the museums closing in 45min so we can't enter from her gate anymore like WTF? We already have pre-paid tickets why not let us in to meet the rest of our group already in. She was trying to convince us to call them to come out to meet us instead and to just skip even entering the museum at all. So we walked ALL THE WAY AROUND to the front entrance and they let us walk right in, again TOTALLY RUDE and LAZY that she didn't want to work anymore and let us in and she arbitrarily stop working/letting anyone in her gate 45minutes to closing. This was on May 31st, 2026 BTW if you want reference to who was working that day. Then to make things EVEN WORSE.....there was some cracked out drugged out teenager like totally methed/tweeked/cracked out with no clothes on the 2nd floor. Security did not remove him from the museum instead they just let him act like a total cracked out mess and then he starts vomiting all over himself and that entire section like WTF??? So they let this guy and his friends/family just disrupt that entire middle section of the 2nd floor to do this? Like why didn't security just kick him and his group out of the museum? He was freaking naked and vomiting and high as hell??? Was there even security working that day? Again this was May 31st, 2026 about 30minutes until closing if you need reference and want to even check security cameras of both of these horrible situations that occurred. This visit was so bad we may just skip this museum all together next time and maybe you should too unless you want a naked crackhead teenager vomiting all over you! read more

Greetings, this is jimmy, again. As you know, I always begin with a 2.5 star rating system, and then rate the venue up or down from there, based on multiple attributes. The Field museum contains a massive collection of exhibits, and the wide variety of cultural history gives one plenty of options to explore when visiting. It is a fairly large building,so you can expect to spend a fairly long amount of time here if you wish to get a good look at everything. That being said, it is possible to simply spend an hour or two at one part of the museum, and still enjoy yourself. As you know, clean, good quality restrooms are of a high value to me, and thankfully, the field museum has very clean, high quality restrooms. However, the museum does tend to get fairly busy, thanks to a well earned amount of visitors, meaning that there will usually be a small wait. overall, I will be rating the Field Museum with a 5 Starting with two point five stars, the diversity of the numerous exhibits raises it by one star, the ability to spend anywhere from an hour to a a few days there raises it by one star, and the higher quality restrooms raise it by yet another star, though the inconvenience of waiting for a restroom and it taking a while to walk from point A to point B does bring it down .5 This is Jim, signing off. read more

I hate to have to give the Field Museum 3 stars but I had a very unfortunate incident at their restaurant. First of all the prices are ridiculous but I expected them to be, nevertheless my husband and I decided to purchase orders for our family. We spend over $50! We asked for cups for water, and my 6 year old went to the fountain drink machine and did not know that the cups were for water only, and he got Sprite instead. When I realized what he had accidentally done, I told him not to worry about it and proceeded to eat our lunch. A few minutes later a female employee came to our table and was very rude and told us "who's the wise guy who did this?!". We thought she was trying to be funny and laughed along with her. She then said, "seriously, who's going to pay for this?!" I then said that my child had accidentally gotten Sprite instead of water! She then proceeded to take the cup from my son's hands and walked away! Very rude of her! I had never been mistreated in such format! I wish I could've gotten her name or asked to speak to a manager, but my mindset was to calm my son who was crying and leave immediately! Great place to stop by if you're visiting Chicago. I recommend buying a city pass. It includes tickets to the aquarium, Willis tower, Chicago 360 (John Hancock), field museum and the art institute of Chicago. You're basically pre-purchasing the tickets and you're in a fast pass lane. It's definitely nice when you're trying hit all the touristy sites on the weekend! There's a ton to look at. On the back of the visitors guide is essentially a scavenger hunt to see 12 works of art under an hour. After walking around the city all day, we decided to follow the list. We some how managed to get distracted and lost. It's pretty difficult to navigate thru all the exhibits since only the first floor has access to all areas. You'd probably need to spend days here to really enjoy and learn about all the works and exhibits. City pass included an Audio guide which was nice. You could listen and learn as you walked around. There are a ton of friendly staff members to help direct you when you're lost! read more

Recently visited the Field Museum and had such a great experience! We grabbed tickets online for $30 each and went on a Saturday morning via public transit, so I can't speak to parking, but getting there was easy. The moment you walk in, you're immediately wowed by the massive displays. From towering pterodactyls to giant totem poles and the historic elephant models from the museum's early days, it feels grand right from the start. The exhibits truly have something for everyone. We explored detailed animal displays, wandered through the Ancient Americas section, and spent time learning about Tibet, ancient China, and Earth's history. Of course, seeing SUE the T. rex was a highlight. Even after nearly six hours, we still felt like we barely scratched the surface. Overall, it was immersive, educational, and absolutely worth the visit. I'd happily come back to dive deeper into the exhibits we missed and check out anything new they've added. read more

Simply horrid experience! The museum itself is lovely, but the staff is rude and unworthy of the educational experience of the atmosphere! I've heard of reverse discrimination in the states (whites being treated differently by the blacks), but my goodness, it's so egregious that I"m surprised there aren't laws against it! If they'd been hired at the British Museum, white-black or plaid, they'd be out on their ears! Horrid, horrid place and so far from anything that it isn't worth the visit, truly! The exhibits are nothing you couldn't first, and better, see in Europe so save your money! My experience here in Chicago in general has made me homesick for London! read more

Ab.so.lutely Uhmaze-a-balls. If you can't find something to enjoy at the Field Museum, we cannot be friends. Seriously! What is not to love about the natural history and special exhibits at the Field? Tell me! (I'm waiting....) It's a great escape during the winter months, but I like visiting all year round. Get the City Pass from a Chicago Public Library and you'll save. If you're a tourist, make this part of your Chicago experience. So, Sue is no longer a part of the Great Hall, but the Field is still a world class natural history museum. Ample parking in the lot across the street, or Uber/Lyft, it there. We love this museum. We started coming when my son was 2, and we come about once every 2 months. Now that my daughter is 2.5 years old she also begs to come. I have been about 100 times but have seen very little outside of the Sue movie and the evolution exhibit - specifically the fossil dinos. It doesn't matter though, every time I go I learn something new. The evolution exhibit is fantastic for all ages. The fossil collection is mind boggling. Tickets are extremely expensive so we always buy the membership for free entrance, free coat check and discounted movie tickets. It is worth it if you go a couple of times a year. read more

The Field Museum is a classic--an absolute must if you're in Chicago! It's huge, well-organized, and packed with jaw-dropping exhibits for every age and interest. Of course, Sue the T. Rex steals the show (and rightly so), but the Ancient Egypt section, Gems Hall, and cultural exhibits are just as incredible. Be ready to walk--it's big! Pro tip: Go early to beat the school groups and family crowds. It gets very busy by mid-morning, especially during summer and weekends. This is an amazing museum. Second time visiting this and still wowed by the sheer size and scale of this ship. Excellent on board attractions for all ages. So many great photo opportunities (though you may need to be patient until planes are free of other people). We got there prior to opening and it was busy. Come lunch time it was PACKED. Get there and get on board as early as you can. Enjoy the docent, volunteer and former service mens tours and insights to the ship. They have so many tales to tell. Take a decent wide angle and flash unit for when inside the interior of the ship. read more

Our family had a fantastic time at the Field Museum in Chicago! There's so much to see and explore for all ages. Sue the T. rex was a highlight, and the exhibits on ancient civilizations and Cats Predators to Pets exhibit was fascinating. The museum is well-organized, clean, and easy to navigate, with plenty of interactive displays to keep everyone engaged. The staff were friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. I love this place, I have ever since i was a little girl and saw the mummy exhibit & the doll house. My sister & her husband took me here for my birthday a few years back to see the more recent mummy exhibit and i loved it, what a great birthday present!. The only problem I have is that it is so expensive to get into some of the traveling exhibits, I feel like they could get more visitors if they knocked $10 off of the ticket price and make more money. read more

Our favorite of the big Chicago museums. My husband has the membership so we both get in free, even the ticketed exhibits! They are always getting new exhibits here, so even if you go often, there is usually something new to see. The food in the snack bar is actually pretty good, and not too expensive. They even offer alcohol and coffee. I suggest going on weekdays if you can, as the weekends are super busy. Nice gift shop, but very pricy. read more

The field museum like many things in chicago is a must see. Its in a beautiful location right by lake michigan and next to the planetarium and aquarium. The most beautiful place in the summer time. They always have different exhibits so its a good idea to go back from time to time. From ancient Egypt, to dinosaurs they have it all. I love to learn about where we came from. basic admission price is 15$ so its not to expensive. A MUST SEE. read more

The Field Museum is one of my favorite places. It is one of those places that you have to devote an entire day to because there is so much in the museum itself. Not only that but if you take public transportation, which I would highly recommend, that takes time too. I love coming here. A+ for the neoclassical architecture alone. The Field Museum will take your breath away as you see its collumns rising in front of you as you drive south on Lake Shore Drive. Some great things to check out at the museum: Sue, one of the largest and most complete T. Rex skeletons in the world, and the Egyptian exhibits (there is currently a King Tut exhibit also). read more

He had been cooped up in the house for a few days due to weather and needed to get out and about. My brother had taken him about 6 months ago and he enjoyed it even as a baby so I was hype to see it with him now that he's a little older. Rundown: -SIL paid for the tix so I dunno how much it cost -easy parking -no lines around 11am on a summer Sunday -in and out in about 45 minutes Notable exhibits: -the first one is an eye scan. I have soft tissue injury icks but I survived -the jellyfish mirror room - kids (and adults like me) go wild for this -any of the tactile ones where you touch and music happens -the ball and mirror room. Nephew went crazy for this as balls are his fave thing. -My ABSOLUTE fave was the DJ beats making room. I mixed some sounds while nephew danced. Some of us writing reviews for this place are old, jaded, have "seen it all" and seem to be approaching this from a transactional angle - I spent this so I want such and such experience. But if you watch a child's eyes light up at all the colors and sounds, watch how excited they get when they realize that their movement and their touch changes the floor pattern or the music, then you really get to experience what the place is about - Wonder!

The International Museum of Surgical Science ended up being way more interesting than I expected…read more It's inside this gorgeous old mansion on Lake Shore Drive, the kind of place you walk into and immediately think, "Wait... surgery happened here?" The whole building used to be a private home modeled after a French chateau, which makes the contrast between crystal chandeliers and antique bone saws kind of fantastic. I'd say 1.5 to 2 hours is the sweet spot, depending on how deep you want to go into the placards. You can easily stretch it longer, because every room has some wild piece of medical history to learn. There's everything from early anesthesia equipment to an iron lung, to old surgical kits that look like something a pirate would carry. It really hits you how fast medicine has evolved , I mean we really went from "bite this leather strap and hope" to modern surgery in basically a cosmic blink. Makes me wish I could time-travel forward to see what medicine looks like in 200 years...though I'll be very, very gone by then:( One thing to know: there is absolutely no place to eat or drink inside. No cafe, no water bottles for sale, nothing. Just a tiny gift shop with some quirky souvenirs. So show up hydrated or plan to escape for snacks afterward. Overall, it's a great stop if you like history, science, or simply marveling at how humans figured out how to keep other humans alive. A little eerie, very educational, and surprisingly beautiful.

Chicago has a bunch of these smaller niche museum, but I thought this one was one of the better ones. It's an an historic house that would have overlooked the Lake before LSD existed. The exhibits were all pretty good, but my favorite was eye care. They had some great optometry artifacts and a collection of sunglasses over the years. They also have quite a bit of original art, mostly in sculpture form which is both odd, but still important. Another thing I liked was that it wasn't overly graphic. There's a plastic surgery section that has a few slightly unsettling portraits of people maimed during WWI. I mean, I kind of felt more bad for those poor people which I think was the point. If I were to give it all a rating, it's a light PG13. If there are any downsides, the place is a little on the expensive side for its size, but they're constantly running events that include admittance. They also seem to lean on some kind of artist or researcher that does a lot of dream stuff. I didn't like his stuff as much. Also, the sections are a little disorganized, but that might be spacing in issues. Either way, this was a pretty interesting place. I'm betting they do an awesome Halloween event because it's a little spooky, but all educational. The gift shop is neat too!

We loved the art pieces we saw, but mostly the architecture is what we loved. My daughter loved the staircases and amazing dome. The free to the public restrooms also came in handy for us. They were clean and well stocked. The location is perfect for anyone coming or going from Millenium Park or the nearby areas. Lastly, the gift shop had tons of cool art. This place is worth a visit.

My lovely wife and I have been to the "old" museum before, and it was an eye-opener to visit yesterday (Memorial Day) during a special free admission Grand Re-Opening weekend (the regular admission fee has also tripled to $15 from its former $5 ticket price). The star attraction is the recreation of Henry Darger's apartment and studio, along with a celebration of his works and methodologies. There are also spaces for the interesting and diverse Permanent Collection, as well as Special Exhibitions. Also interesting is the fact that the museum featuring self-taught art has bathrooms with fairly posh fixtures. Intuit Art Museum is not far from the Chicago Blue Line station. Check out the compact but cute gift shop before you leave.

Growing up in a pre-social media era, I knew the the Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Dominicans claimed major metropolitan areas on the East Coast (NYC and Miami), but I never associated Mexicanos in the cold AF Midwest and East Coast. My god, I'm grateful for discovering the Pilsen neighborhood and this museum. I represent the third generation-guero faction of my Mexican American family, but I grew up surrounded by the cultura, with a deep appreciation for the culture. And this museum, much like Placita Olvera, gave me the "feels." It's in a super residential neighborhood. I guess you could say the same thing about LACMA, but it just feels different here, and in a good way. All the "Fuera Ice" signs in the area around the museum made me proud of Chi-City. I don't see these signs around LACMA, but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, if you're visiting from out of town, I strongly encourage you to stop by here and chill. Spend some time here. Check out the graffiti murals around 18th street. Soak in all the exhibits. The good. The bad (colonization). And the ugly. The continued racism and othering of a community that fights and dies for this country, that takes care of this country's kids, that handles this country's landscaping, that builds this country's neighborhoods and cities, that feeds this county's people, con sabor, and so much more--con todo!
