Open since 2015 or so, this is one of the many microbreweries all around Queens and Brooklyn. The taproom area is spacious and rustic, like most tap rooms, and they seem to be kid-friendly, though most folks, of course, were of drinking age. Our small group was here after a long walk, and everyone was in the mood for a drink. In terms of food, they have some snacks, and there are food carts outside on certain days. Sunday's option was Mom's Momos right outside, but the cart was unfortunately out of most of their things, but this is not the brewery's fault. For my selection, I decided to get a few of the 5oz (or 5.5oz) sampler/tasters of two $4 beers, and eventually a third, instead of getting a 10oz pour, though the pricey Cuvée Barley Wine sounded interesting. The bartender, who appears to be the owner from the photos online, was friendly and gave good suggestions. My favorite of the bunch was from their rotating cask selection, which was a bit surprising as I tend to like sours and stronger beers. This was the Billy Neverwilly, a 5.6% APV English Pub Ale, or Bitter. As expected for the style, it was very pleasant, being malty with a little bit of bitterness. For the percentage, which is higher than the typical pub ale, it was surprisingly drinkable. If I got an $8.50 20oz pour, it would be very dangerous, as I could easily drink another few. More unique, but still tasty, was the Grätzer, a 4.0% Grodziskie, or smoked wheat ale, a style originally from Poland. Previous to this, the only smoked beer I ever had was the German Rauchbier, using smoked barley. The most well-known one is the original from Schlenkerla, and it is pitch black with an off amber head, very smoky, and very tasty, and you can find it at Karczma in Greenpoint. The color in this case looked like any typical wheat ale/witbier with white foam and had a very mild smoky smell. The flavor was interesting, with the initial sip tasting like your typical citrusy wheat ale, but with a smoky aftertaste. The last of the brews was the Guava Goggles, a 5.5% Sour Ale with Guava and Lime, which he recommended over the similarly named Berry Goggles. It was primarily sour, but had some mild sweetness from the guava and a bit of tang. Occasionally, I find guava a bit overpowering, but it worked here. This was again refreshing and easy to drink. I would go back here, and next time, I would probably go with the Infernal Optimism, a 6.7% Smoked Porter, which seems available frequently. I also wouldn't mind trying something else interesting, as everything was good, which is rare for the number of styles I tried. Nice rotating taps, nice staff, and a good, large space. It's hard to dislike this place. read more

So good to stumble upon this place while touring Queens shoreline views before walking back across the Queensboro bridge. The place has the working brewery vibe with some bar seating as well as some table seating. I enjoyed a couple samples of their IPAs and Pale ale and sampled their Irish Stout, and was impressed enough to bring back two four packs to go. The best part is that stye allow you to mix and match cans in your 4-pack which is not always the case at a brewery. The hazy IPA and double IPA I brought home were quite good too. Fifth Hammer Brewing is a craft brewery that opened in Queens, New York in October 2017. It was founded by business partners Chris Cuzme, David Scharfstein and Mary Izett. Cuzme had previously worked as a brewer for Gun Hill Brewing as well as 508 GastroBrewery. Izett started out as a homebrewer, served as a president of the New York City Homebrewers Guild, authored "Speed Brewing", and is co-host of the fermentation-centric podcast "Fuhmentaboudit". Cuzme and Izett teamed up with Scharfstein (a lawyer) to open their own brewery in a former industrial space in Queens' Long Island City neighborhood. They chose the name "Fifth Hammer" in reference to the legend of Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who came across five men hammering at a forge; the fifth hammer created a distinctly discordant sound. The concept represents individuality and not being afraid to go your own way individuality and not being afraid to go your own way. I visited Fifth Hammer Brewing this past summer while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn and Queens breweries and pizzerias and this was my fourth stop of the day. The place had a nice sized crowd when I showed up. I explored the taproom for a bit and then pulled up a seat at the bar. After scanning through the menu, I decided to order short pours of "Bartholomew Neverbart" (English Pale Ale; on cask), "Sun Machine" (Grapefruit Kölsch), "Bedevil" (Black IPA), and "Juice Jumper" (Double IPA). I like how Fifth Hammer carries an eclectic mix of different beer styles. I really enjoyed each of the different beers that I sampled, but "Juice Jumper" was probably my favorite. It gives all the brewery vibes. The glassware is interesting because they look like wine glasses but I actually love that. A cool place!! I like the different types of seating they have indoors, at a barrel ( kind of high table vibe), or picnic benches that are reserved for larger groups. They have battery-powered candles, which sets a nice ambience. There are also seats outside the brewery, if you're into street/people watching! My boyfriend and I had the beers which were solid, and had notes of fruit. Tasted exactly like described (we could taste the notes of passionfruit and strawberry in our drinks). This was a "must stop" for us on our self guided brewery Bop in LIC, as we've tried a few Fifth Hammer beers before and have loved every single one. Our experience there did not disappoint! Beer-wise, they can do 5oz tasters of many of their delicious beverages, so we opted to try as many as we possibly could (10 in total ha). Pretty much all were good (and we got a wide variety of beers from IPAs, to smoked lagers, to fruited sours, to chocolate stouts), with our favorites being the holiday goblin (fruited sour with lactose), duke Vernon (Choco stout), Cloak Spell (dark lager), Apple P.I., and Strawberry Goggles. Ambiance - wise, it was super packed on a Saturday afternoon but we ended up getting two seats at the bar within 10 min. It's dog friendly as well - so many floofs roaming around too. Service-wise, all the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about the beers (and had some awesome recommendations for us!) The Mango Dragonfruit sour was refreshing I could have that one all day. I wasn't much of a fan of the Safety Glass Pilsner though. The Financial Masochism was amazing and recommend! So I really liked this place and giving it three stars only cause of the room for improvement. It was raining out and we popped in on a Saturday. There was an event going on so a big chunk of the space was unavailable. We came in and since it's sort of sit where you want, it was hard to tell what seats were available and at what tables. It looked like a few tables were taken over by a few people but they glommed the whole table. No place to put your stuff if you have to stand. Just felt a little ignored and couldn't really find a spot and so we were standing while others were "holding" tables and had to move around a couple of strollers and pets. I like the look of the place, got lots of ambiance, I bet its great in the summer with the big garage doors in the front. I definitely want to try again and I'm hoping to put another star or two depending on my next visit. Service was OK, and beers were fine, we just had this odd feeling of standing there like a couple of dorks standing there with tables with open seats but coats and things all over the empty seats. I'm categorically an IPA guy, so my review will speak to Fifth Hammer's IPAs. Before I talk beer, the space is a great spot to casually grab a beer with friends. They have outdoor and indoor seating; from what I can tell, dog friendly place as the dogs were both inside and outside the brewery. It crowded up by the time I got here (around 2 p.m. on a Sunday), so seating for a big group might come down to luck. Now, I'll talk beer: Sandal Scandal - my favorite of the two IPAs that I drank. Its hoppiness level was modest and it was invigoratingly pine forward. The beer was crispy on every sip. Functional Modern - it's not explicit on the menu, but this was a hazy IPA. It had the milkiness of pulpy orange juice. From end-to-end, the drink was silky smooth, but with some blips of hops in the middle. They have a great selection of tasty craft brews and there's usually a food truck parked out front or a third party vendor inside making small bites. There's a limited amount of seating outside and there's a good amount of seats inside but not a ton so if there are a few groups already inside you might be stuck standing. They have a few board games in stock to play as well. Came here on a cold winter night and it had a very cozy atmosphere with a digital fireplace playing up on the projector screen. Nice local brewery, and I love that they have a rotating menu of beers that changes up each time. Even when I asked what was most popular, the staff mentioned that everything turns around so often that it's hard to say. During our last visit we picked up a pack of their Prickly Whiskers sour ales (prickly pear) and a bottle of the Fleur de Marteau brett ale (chamomile, rose hips, and elderflower). Both were good - the prickly pear was a solid sour but didn't have a very distinct flavor (probably to be expected of prickly pear), but the Fleur de Marteau was a surprising hit. The beer was light and floral, making it feel almost like a delicate beer... not something like we've had before! I only wish the brewery could allow us to mix and match within the 4 packs, rather than having to buy each can individually at full price if you want variety. I'd definitely leave buying more if they had that option! read more

Fifth Hammer is my jam!! I loved Fifth Hammer pre-pandemic and love it even more mid-pandemic. Just about every other week they come out with a new sour beer, which is my favorite type of beer. And they have my number, because I just have to try them all. I cannot not get a new sour when it's released. Of course if you don't like sours, they have plenty of other beers to try. There is something for everyone here. It also feels like my 'Cheers' brewery because even wearing my mask, they recognize me when I'm there to pickup my order. On my last in person pickup, I met brewery co-owner, Mary Izett, herself which was super cool. My last couple orders have been picked up by friends on my behalf since I've been quarantining from home due to recent out of state travel. Their flexibility also keeps me coming back every sour release. Their social media is on point too. They're super quick to reply if you have any questions about their products. I can't wait until they are able to reopen their tasting room/bar because it's the place to be. It's a huge space with lots of seating, a ton of taps. I love that you can do flights so you can try multiple beers before committing to a pint. They usually partner with a local food truck who will park out front so you can get food to enjoy inside the brewery. And they have THE BEST merch. I love their teku glasses for drinking their canned beer from home. The 'Can I Pet Your Dog?' shirt is my absolute favorite though. They even worked with me to pick out a certain colorway which was incredible customer service. OH AND THEY ALLOW DOGS (when their tasting room is open)!! Who doesn't want to enjoy a nice beer and pet a dog at the same time? I am looking forward to drinking in house soon, but until then, I'll catch y'all at the pickup window every sour drop! read more

I came here for trivia on Tuesday and it was such a blast. Trivia starts at 7 and goes a bit past 9 and it definitely attracts a large crowd, so get there early! One of the best brewery experiences you can have during COVID. Came here in early November and the staff was friendly, the space was segmented, and the beer was great. Give me those check boxes and I'm a happy camper in 2020! The lighter beers are solid but not remarkable. Got a small sample ( sun machine) and full pour (runway turtles ipa) and was pleased. But the imperial stout aged in rye barrels (rye barrel Iron Orchard) was the winner! Excellent layers of flavor and not too boozy for a 13% doozy. The seating areas inside are naturally separated by tall barrel walls, and the staff take care to check your temp and have you stay 6 feet away. And they were attentive, although their were only 3 tables of people in there when I went. Lastly the price: it's cheaper than a bar and the beer is fresh. Totally worth it. read more

Excellent brews, nice place, live music on Monday afternoon. After visiting MOMA PS1 (highly recommended), we walked down to The Fifth Hammer. We each had a couple of beers. The Surgical Citra cask IPA was wonderful, hazy and hoppy but smooth, not bitter. Others in our party enjoyed a pilsner whose name is escaping me. As a special treat, we got to sit at the street facing communal table and listen to live jazz on the street in front of the brewery. It was a beautiful day and the place got crowded, a nice mix of people and dogs! A really enjoyable way to spend a nice afternoon while visiting our daughter. read more
