Not only one of my favorite breweries in NYC, but one of my top 5 in the world. Grimm makes wondrous beers and their tasting room is a model of relaxation and professionalism. On my first visit in 2019, I was in beer heaven at Grimm Ales, sampling Dreamweapon, Crystal Vibration IPA, Butterfly Door DIPA and Geodesic Dome apricot and passionfruit dry-hopped sour. I stopped in again this fall after a concert and enjoyed two amazing drinks (Yearbook barrel-aged imperial stout, Year of Song Munich Dunkel) and a perfect snack (Bûcheron goat cheese and spent grain crackers). When you travel, you have to be flexible. Thanks for my plans for the day all kind of following apart, I visited Grimm and think it was my favorite brewery experience of the entire trip. I had had Grimm Ales in cans and on draft in the past, but this was the first time visiting. Their beer is so much better on draft, bright and flavorful, and served with such care. Bartender Tony was welcoming and quick to serve, even with a full bar all evening. The space was open and industrial, with their signature colors and designs around. I loved seeing all the happy groups, including some pups, as they enjoyed a clearly favorite neighborhood spot. The beer was fantastic, I had a flight and wished I could've physically had more. Prices are reasonable for the location and quality of the beer. Another highlight was La La's, the attached bakery and kitchen. It also ended up being my favorite meal with a zesty and refreshing salad of local produce, and a hot steamy fresh loaf of bread with balsamic vinegar and oil. A perfect meal. Recently went here with my husband and toddler boys, loved the space and how chilled it was. We wanted to go to their rooftop but unfortunately they have events during the weekends so it was closed. Joe Grimm and Lauren Carter Grimm use their brewery as a creative practice to showcase not only quality beers, but also contribute directly to the community at large. When I walked into this brewery I did not know what to expect. But wow I was blown away by the cleanliness and just how the space looked! When you walk in to your left there is some merch you can buy. To the right when you walk in there is a nice size bar. They have some other tables and chairs in this area as well. I opted to sit at bar. The lady working was very helpful. This place also has a roof top but it was closed when I went by there. I had tried one beer and that beer was the grimm lite. It was a light lagar style beer. I got a four pack of it to go, that is how much I enjoyed it. The bar had some bar snacks you could get while enjoying your beverage but I did not see anything I liked or wanted. They usually have pizza options avail which, I have heard was very good! Maybe one day I will try and get to taste this pizza. This brewery has a pretty looking cat that just wonders around. I overheard that the brewery adopted it. Its name is Simcoe. What a cute name as well. There are pets that are allowed to come in as I was there someone brought her dog in. Seriously good high-end craft beers, with a focus on IPAs. Their brews are clean, expressive, and balanced. I went during a random weekday, and the bar was a cordoned area from their active brewery, forklift and all, but it was hardly intrusive. Grimm is among my top three favorite NYC breweries. For starters, they have a cat. While I missed my chance encounter with the resident mouser, Simcoe, I'm a huge fan of any establishment friendly to our feline friends. Second, their beer is incredible. They have a huge variety of beers, and I wanted to try nearly everything on their menu. I had a hard time narrowing down which brews to try, but fortunately, they offer smaller size pours, spreading out my options a bit more. We managed to snag a couple of bar seats when we sauntered in on a dreary, rainy Sunday. The bartender was lovely and very attentive despite essentially running the entire place herself during a busy time. I was appreciative of her service! The pizza upstairs is tasty, if not VERY thin crusted- just so you're away. It's made fresh, so I'd prepare for a little bit of wait, especially in busy times. The nice thing is your tab transfers between the bar downstairs and the pizza/ bar upstairs. The upstairs also has a lovely outdoor space (I'm sure it's great in the summer!) The beers here are vast and unique. I could spend an entire day sipping a drink at their bar, reading a nice book, and seeking out Simcoe. read more

A lovely brewery and space tucked deep into Williamsburg -- they seem to be quite the neighborhood staple and have fun events throughout the month. I came here for a friend's birthday and they let us reserve a space and bring our own food. Really liked this place when I stopped in after a visit to the Amant nearby. Large cavernous space was bursting at the seams, as they were hosting a pop-up craft sale with local makers/vendors. I enjoyed my Sumi ink imperial stout. Heavy on the vanilla, inky, and a very luxurious mouthfeel. ABV 13.5%. I'll plan to return to taste some of their other options. read more

While I am not a habitual beer drinker, the beer connoisseurs in my life love Grimm's, and the vibes in their brewery are always fun, casual, and friendly. The space is quite big, with long picnic tables conducive for big group gatherings, and someone always seems to be having some sort of chill celebration inside the airy, festive space. The decor is Brooklyn minimal with lots of plants, and there's cool merch to buy by the bathrooms (where you'll also find the water self-service station). The bartenders know their stuff and work quickly and efficiently despite the near-constant busyness of this space. Grimm's new Physica Wines line is terrific, with some Waldorf-ish inspired natural wines that are funky, fun, and crowd-pleasing (if you're into the natty wine life). And, if you have time to wait in line, you can check out their new venture, LaLa's, on the roof, which serves fairly passable New Haven-style apizzas along with beer/wine in a cool indoor-outdoor space. read more

Grimm Artisanal Ales is a craft brewery that opened in Brooklyn, New York in June 2018. It was founded by husband and wife Joe and Lauren Grimm. Joe had worked for years as a musician while Lauren worked as a sculptor and conceptual artist. They soon became very interested in homebrewing and created beer recipes out of their Gowanus apartment. In 2013, they officially launched Grimm Artisanal Ales. Because they couldn't obtain a loan to open a brewery, the Grimms decided to operate as a gypsy brewery operation and enlisted the help of established production breweries such as Buzzards Bay Brewing and Beltway Brewing Company. After five years of producing excellent brews, the Grimms finally opened their brick and mortar facility in East Williamsburg. In November 2022, the Grimms launched Physica Wines: a sister winery operation that produces natural, single-ingredient wines from grapes selected from Long Island's North Fork. In July 2023, the Grimms launched Lala's Brooklyn Apizza: their rooftop pizzeria and bar that specializes in New Haven-style pizza. Joe's fascination for "apizza" (pronounced ah-BEETZ) started during his time as a student at Yale University. Lauren had always dreamed of running a restaurant, so they named it "Lala's" (her family nickname). I recently visited Grimm Artisanal Ales for the first time while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn and Queens breweries and pizzerias and Grimm was my fourth stop of the day. Not only was I excited to try their beers but also their pizza. I'm a New Haven native and was very excited to try a Brooklyn pizzeria's take on New Haven-style pizza. My visit was actually the second day that Lala's was open. I heard that the pizzeria ran out of dough in a few hours on their opening night, so I made sure to arrive early before the rooftop pizzeria opened for the afternoon. I was one of the first people inside and found a seat right by the wood-fired pizza oven. I ordered a beer flight of four samples including "Afterimage" (Double IPA), "Dihedral Synchro-Helix Actuation Door" (Double IPA), "Stowing Away the Time" (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout), and "Pictures of Your Mama Taken by Your Papa" (Single Apple Brandy Barrel-Aged Barleywine). These beers completely knocked my socks off, especially the latter! For pizza, I ordered the "Clam Pie" (local little neck clams, aged mozzarella, garlic, Physica Riesling butter sauce, fresh parsley) and the "Squash Pie" (summer squash medallions, mozzarella, squash blossoms, egg yolk drizzle, ricotta, black cracked pepper). Holy moly! These pies may not have had the char of authentic coal-fired apizza, but they were still pretty darn close to the real thing! Speaking as a New Haven native, I have to give Lala's my seal of approval! I had a fantastic experience at Grimm/Lala's and I can't wait to go back! Grimm is a mainstay of the Brooklyn craft beer scene specializing in IPAs, sour beers, hazies, heck if they brew it's worth a sip. The taproom and brew operation is location on Metropolitan, near Morgan Avenue and the Grand Street Bridge. It's a popping neighborhood, if you know what to look for. The Grimm space features a larger interior area with tables, a bar, and private space that, on a recent Saturday afternoon, was being used for an engagement party. That was the day of the Oishii strawberry beer release. I picked up a souvenir beer glass to always remember the occasion. Excitingly, Grimm's rooftop is now home to a pizza joint called Lala's. Now there's all the more reason to pay a visit, pay your respects, and pay for some damn fine ale. read more

Grimm Artesianal Ales was another brewery from the East Coast that Steve and I really enjoyed this past summer. Two beers that I really wanted to praise is the pale ale called Today's Special. This was a wonderful beer to relax to with a flavor profile that wasn't too overwhelming or unpleasant. Just a wonderful pale ale. Another one of Grimm's beer that I really want to praise is the sour ale, Vacay. Once again a very enjoyable beer to have especially when it's hot outside. I do like those sours during the summer! Well, my friends said that this is the place to go if you don't like beer, because they have beers that don't taste like beer. Color me intrigued... I started with a key lime pie pop, which was a sour. It was amazingly fantastic! It was sour, and sweet, and limey, but not beery. Whoo hoo! I can't believe it doesn't taste like beer. After that, I tried the carrot cake pop. While still good (and neon bright orange!), it wasn't as good to me as the key lime pie. But wow! Two things to try? But wait... A Yelp lesson/proverb for you: One visit a review does not make. Whether that means anything to you or you totally didn't start reading this review needing to get some kind of backwards oddly written lingo, the point I'm trying to make is sometimes your first experience at a place doesn't (or shouldn't) stop you from returning. This is especially true when you borderline at a three star review. This is even more especially true when said review deals with beer. So let's be real, Grimm. That first visit, as stated in my original thoughts below this update, was full of crowded pretentiousness. The place was badly bustling, the bartenders were preoccupied and unfriendly, and the beers were a little too similar to really taste variety (even if Grimm's sours are often legit). It all amounted to a negative trip I wasn't expecting. Okay, and maybe some other reviews had me holding a few preconceived notions that this might occur. Some (but not most) of that is on me. Flash forward more than a year later and I still hadn't been back (even though I hit up other breweries around the area several times in between that). It took my buddy, who hadn't been to Grimm and was mostly unfamiliar with their brews, to get me to give things another try. Kudos to him because everybody deserves a second chance, especially beer (I said that already). Just walking through the doors automatically gave way to different feelings. One of the bartenders welcomed us in, gave us beer menus, and said if we wanted to try anything just let him know. I looked at my two friends in shock (good shock) as I was happily amazed by what I had heard. That amazement continued when I was able to take a true gander of Grimm's taproom space. On this Monday, the place was barely holding 10 people in it which led to us easily finding a seat and made for a more relaxing beer drinking atmosphere. The open garage door turned window on one end was a nice touch and I was even able to notice the built in food spot right next to it. Oh and most importantly, Grimm's beer list just looked and tasted better. The variety available was still heavy on sours and IPAs (two staples of Grimm), but beyond that there were a few other brews that really stood out. Both saisons were directly on point (especially Patter with its berry hints) and Cinnamon Babka was an imperial milk stout that encompassed so many sweet and creamy flavors while only subtly hitting you with a boozy note at the end. These made up for that last visit, and then some. Overall, Grimm gave me what I wanted and hoped for the first time around: a beautiful brew space with welcoming staff and a tap list that truly shows off Grimm's ability to be a happenin' brewery. So let this be a lesson to all Yelpers about giving places a return visit, just to make sure you know what they're all about. Having said that, I'm not jumping up to five stars just yet, but consider Grimm coming close to it. Things'll be settled as a third round is now not too far in the future. read more

We stopped by late on Saturday night. The ambiance is mellow with low music, dim lighting and a lot of greenery. We grabbed a high top table and a server brought us water and menus immediately. The bartender that served us was very personable and a gentleman. My favorite tastes were the Magic Words and the Key Lime Pie . I came here for the first time earlier today, and LOVED my experience. I really like the aesthetic and the vibe of this place. I tried the Grimm Weisse and one of the sours. I don't normally like sours but the one I tried was lovely for the warm day we had! Grimm also has the cutest merch, and you can indeed buy their glasses, so I bought one of the stemmed one. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, and I already know I will be coming back! There isn't as much seating as I would have though, so it does seem to get a bit crowded, but luckily I got there fairly early so I managed to get a seat. This was one of the best bar/brewery experiences I've had. Great bartenders and friendly people at the bar. The beer itself is out of this world. I got to try 11 4 ounce pours and their wasn't a single off flavor note. Top notch IPA, Stouts, and Sours. Collaborations with other excellent breweries were also amazing. They hid the ABV like it was witchcraft, 14% in a stout was as smooth as can be. They also have awesome food to break up all the alcohol. "Who knew heaven was a place on earth!?!" Belinda Carlisle Grimm! Wow! I've been a huge fan of the Grimm artisanal ales and their packaging has always been the cherry on top. My buddy (instagram thehopdemon ) from Chicago who literally is either drinking craft beer or listening to records or both, suggested this place, I knew I had to go. I love fall and Sunday bike rides are my me days. Grimm's brewery opened very close to my neighborhood. Almost dangerously too close. I could see this being at least a once a month visit. There's already a fair amount of regulars. And it's only their 11th weekend open. And the location is most definitely in a spot I would not have found on my own. HIDDEN. It's only a matter of time before the word is completely out. The space here comes as no surprise with it's gorgeous design and styling. I love how open and bright it feels. I instantly was smitten with it. When I sat at the bar I was thrilled to see the options. I most definitely did the 4 oz. pours to try the most kinds. I started with Hyperfocus: Galaxy double IPA. The smaller sizes get served in a wine style glass. I found this stemware to be perfect for sniffing the aromas before diving in. The Hyperfocus has a uber ripe fuzzy fruit or cactus fruit smell. For that change from summer to fall this was a great beer. Super Paradise was another outstanding fave! It's a goose with the best berry notes. Took me into fall pie mode. The merch here is all drool worthy. I wanted stemware and a tote. There was no enamel pins but I would have gone for them. They definitely know good design and art. A huge shout out to the staff behind the bar. Everyone was super nice and chatty. I never once had my drink too dry before I was asked if I needed anything. Friends from Hoboken wanted to come down here after we spent some time in CT in the morning. Grimm is a chill, hip spot- we were here on a Sunday afternoon. The space has high ceilings (makes sense bc they brewin!) My friend is more of the beer connoseuir than I- I took sips of the beers he ordered: Midheaven Present Perfect (passion fruit) weisse Black Duck - cider He enjoyed each of them and I only was partial to the Blackduck, it has a slightly bitter finish, but that's my preference. They also ordered a chocolate pudding and chicken shawarma wrap, which again I took a taste of. The chocolate pudding I believe might've had tahini in it (another menu item is tahini brownies). I think the one thing that surprised me was how family friendly this location is- not a bad thing, I just wouldn't have expected little ones hopping around in a brewery (haha- hopping.
