While I'm not a beer drinker, I appreciate the third space Alewife has created and the community events that they often host here, and it seems like a super friendly space for people with kids and dogs (key for a successful third space!). Getting another New York brewery notched off my list. Alewife Brewing being the latest and my, what a good beer experience it was. Steve and I were very impressed with the two beers that we had! Thousand Stars was the first beer we got ready for, a Bohemian Pilsner this beer had a nice, clean flavor to it that went down very smooth. With sweet and floral aspects to it this beer was an extremely refreshing start for us and Alewife. The next beer was Tripping On The Forest Floor, a brown ale that we also really got into with enthusiasm! I've loved Alewife since their old location in LIC and when they moved during the pandemic, I never got to the new space. I finally did not long ago and am kicking myself for waiting so long. From a beer perspective, they've really upped their game since their first attempts. I had a couple of different beers while I was there and both were great. Second, the service is pretty fast, even when there's a line. The bartenders are helpful but I like that they don't dick around gabbing with people when there are 15 people in line waiting for a beer. There was a bratwurst vendor there the evening I went and that was pretty good. I believe they rotate. The best thing about the place is the space. They've got a great indoor space...really huge so you can bring a big group of friends. I brought my beer club and it was fun, although we had about three tables and there were probably a dozen empty ones and a family with kids chooses to sit right next to us. Such a weird phenomenon....why not sit like one table away or five tables away? Why do you have to sit on our laps? But I digress, the space is great and there's also outside seating in appropriate weather. I'm a huge fan. read more

Alewife is a great neighborhood brewery. When they were in LIC I went a few times for trivia but it was always difficult so we didn't become regulars and then they moved to Sunnyside. The Sunnyside location has so much more space than LIC, including quite a large outside area which is great when it's warm out. The indoor area is nice and big as well - not as crowded as their previous location. Thursday evenings they have Drag Bingo which I usually miss due to a regular run that I do but I was able to stop by a few weeks back and really enjoyed it. And who doesn't love bingo and free beer if you win? It sadly wasn't my lucky day though. More recently they offered a free beer to marathon runners so that was really cool to enjoy. I'm strictly a sour beer (or gose) drinker which has worked out in my favor lately but at times they haven't always had one on draft. Thankfully they've expanded their menu to include ciders and wine as well which is great for any of your non-beer drinking friends. They usually have a local food vendor selling food and you can bring your own food in as well which is handy. A friend recently celebrated her birthday here, and it was a great experience. We also had a running club party here as well which was a lot of fun so it's definitely a great spot for groups. They sell a lot of their beers to go in 4 packs. I've been here several times and love the selection of beers they have. They often have a food truck outside incase your hungry but you are also allowed to bring food from outside. They have a fun trivia night every Tuesday and other events throughout the week. Definitely a nice easy place to sit relax and have a couple beers!! read more

Good lord I wish they were still just down the block from me so I could swing by on less than a whim. But, alas, Alewife couldn't keep the o.g. LIC location open during the pandemic while simultaneously building out their newer, bigger Sunnyside digs. Sad, I still am - but this new spot has really come together, especially with the interior finally open! Large, open space with a fair amount of long tables, a nicely sized projector situation for sports viewing, some extra seating lining the finally long bar area, several arcade games (glad that tradition carried on to the new location) with more said to come - and just looks really neat. And the beers are delicious as always, now with a larger assortment of their own offerings, but still with some guest taps (believe they contract brew for Deep Fried Beers). While I'll always miss the old spot down the block in LIC, as a bit more of an intimate setting, I'm glad Alewife is growing and their new spot is great and certainly worth the longer commute. read more

After tasting two beers that I did not like, they told me I only get two tastes. Sorry, but they have a bunch of unknown beers, I am not risking getting a beer I can't enjoy. Waste of a trip... never again!! Most 'small business' breweries and for that matter 'small' microbrew venues do not put a cap on tastes. Furthermore, if I was to order a flight, I could be buying beers that I don't enjoy - that's not what a visit to a brewery or microbrew venue is supposed to be about. I don't like what I tried and thanks to Alewife policy that's all I'll know about their beer. I could name drop several 'small' breweries a reasonable distance from Alewife that are more than happy to give as many tastes as necessary for their customers to find the right beer. But, instead I'll just point this out, this establishment's unwillingness to give a reasonable number tastes lost them my business yesterday and going forward. Plus, when I brewery hop with friends I'll recommend those breweries instead of Alewife. In reality Alewife doesn't want someone like me, they're better off with someone who doesn't know a good beer if it hit them in the face - e.g. their wit beer is nowhere near traditional Belgian taste, and their amber didn't taste good. I'll stick with Hoegaarden and just about any decent off the shelf amber (Alaskan Amber, Fat Tire, etc). Also their table service isn't great! Friends didn't get their beers for over half an hour, they would have just walked out but Alewife had their credit card. read more

Great variety of beers. Good mix between New England style IPAs, many sessionable options, plus a few flavor wild cards. It's a tap list that will please anyone. I usually opt for sessionable beers likes pilsners and ambers, but it's been a while since I had a hazy, hop bomb so I opted for a couple. Great flavorful and texture. Not bitter or woodsy. Staff was super quick. It was very busy for a weeknight and there was always a line, yet it was well managed. Will certainly be adding Alewife to my rotation of go to spots. read more

Was here twice recently and had a great experience - both as an awesome spot to relax and for event management. Will absolutely come back. Needed to set up an Engagement party and wanted someplace laid back, with good drinks and good vibes. This is exactly the place for it. They let us bring in our own decorations and even our own cake, they emailed back and forth with me to answer all my questions ahead of time, and blocked off as many tables as we needed for a sizable group. We just so happened to be there for some live Blues music, which was an unexpected bonus. The beers are (predictably) excellent - lots of options to choose from, and of course they have flights if need be. Staff was kind, quick and thoughtful. The geek in me hugely appreciated the arcade games (Marvel VS Capcom, what a blast) spread across the room. Plus, they have big-screen projectors showing whichever sport is playing - and you can even ask the bartender to switch channels if there's not too many people watching already. The only minor downside is that it's a big warehouse - so yes, you get a ton of space; but it's also not air-conditioned (they have giant ceiling fans on blast), so you tend to sweat a bit on really hot days. Hell if I care though, just another excuse to grab a cold beer or several. Like I said, will definitely be back. Great to have a brewery like this in Sunnyside. read more

This is among the top 3 breweries in Queens. The Beer is great, the can art is distinct, the names are unique, the owner is very personable, and the bathroom is weird. What's not to like? Beer: 5 out of 5. Their IPA recipe is SPOT ON. While other good nyc breweries have IPA that taste more or less the same (Single Cut, Grimm, etc) this one varies their IPA enough that each tastes unique, but has a recognizable Alewife flavor. I haven't had a bad beer there; the gose and wit bier had unique flavors like lemongrass and lime, and the Pilsner is ideal for the style. Art/ambiance: the can art is super unique and kind of spooky, with sorcery and mythology inspiring the names and design. Who knew an "alewife" in medieval times became a synonym for a witch? Turns out Alewives brewed beer for public sale but soon became known as witches as men-led beer guilds became more powerful and tried to take their business away. This brewery takes that historical note and combines beer with sorcery themes...so cool! The inside of the brewery is spooky too. Owner: he was the only guy serving beer the night we went, and he was great! Lots of beer knowledge and his passion for the craft really shined through. Plus he tries to make the brewery a communal spot with food trucks and a trivia night on Tuesday. Bathroom: the doors have a loony Alice in wonderland vibe, and as well as fake vines and hops hanging from the ceiling. I dont mind waiting for the non-gender bathroom with so much going on! I was informed that they do not have any due it's large space. They have overhead fans to spin hot air around, but I have to say, it's brutally hot in the dead of summer. My husband and I accidently came across this spot when driving to get food in the city. We made a wrong turn and were drawn in by the open layout and neon signs we saw. It caught our eye at the same time and we knew we needed to check it out. Super glad we did. This was such a fun stop. There was DRAG Bingo going on so we definitely came on a great night. I love that there were pride flags all over as well. The place itself is very spacious and like I mentioned, an open layout. The bartender was nice and quick to help us. I tried a cider and loved it. They also sell merch here. The shirts are really cute! The only negative was that it was extremely hot because it is all opened and there are no doors. Even an ice cold beer couldn't cool me down enough to want to stay longer. I would for sure come back here in the fall when it is cool outside though! :) read more

Pretty awesome place, can't wait to go back. Came here to meet a friend on a really really really really cold day. Had some good cold beers under some nice hot lamps. The space at Alewife is great. Some nice high-tops, some nice semi-private benches, and some nice on the sidewalk tables as well. Everything feels safe and has a good vibe. The heating lamps are a must-have and they have more than enough. It's tough to visit a place where you've vying for heat-lamp time; no need to fight over them here. Beer here is as expected -- very good. There's lots of option, but my go-to was a hauf brau? Was that it? It was a blue can and crushed my pallet with delicious flavor. Bonus points to Alewife for hosting various food carts. You may come here and find a momo cart selling delicious dumplings or a different cart selling empanadas. Can't wait to come back with friends. With the weather getting warmer and warmer, this is going to be a go-to for spring/summer. PS: the beer was Frau Holle. Boy was I off. read more

Relatively new taproom by Alewife in an otherwise quiet part of town. Initially, the spot was outside-seating only as everyone kept it safe during the pandemic. Now the interior is open with a large open plan and even a space to the side for guest food vendors. No table service, so order up front at the bar. Beers generally range from $7-10 depending on type. Some highlights include the "Chillin with Villains" IPA and "Planetary Conjunction" IPA; though they have many other styles to choose from. Sigmund's Pretzels are available for purchase ($5), and they had a guest Caribbean food vendor on our most recent trip. Vibe here is "something for everyone" as they have board games to play as well as projectors displaying any sports for the night. A nice addition to the neighborhood if you don't want to trek to LIC or Astoria. read more

I arrived on a Sunday night when it was not too crowded and approached the bar, where I was instructed to grab a table and someone would come over. That didn't happen, so back to the bar I went and actually got beers this time. The other snag we encountered was the too-loud-for-the-space band that made sitting in there kind of unpleasant, but they soon packed up. Now for the good part: the beers were really enjoyable and I loved the ambiance. Kinda reminded me of a large version of your beer buddy's garage with some picnic tables and arcade games. Great brewery with a huge indoor space with plenty of bench seating and tables, a few arcade games (Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga, Whack-a-Mole, Buckhunter), cornhole, and I'm told a few pinball machines will hopefully be making there way back (the original ones that were there had been removed by the machines' owner at the time of this review), and a projector screen playing a baseball game (video only, no audio - music was playing on the overhead speakers instead). There's also plenty of covered outdoor seating as well and there was a Birria taco truck outside on a Sunday afternoon. A food vendor is usually posted up outside this place which is great since the brewery itself doesn't serve food. All of the beers were excellent and they have a pretty big variety on tap, with cans also available to purchase to-go. read more

What a great brewery to visit on the weekends especially with a group of friends! Located amongst the all the warehouses, Alewife brewing & taproom is very spacious. They have an assortment of benches, high tables, outdoor seating, and a bar top to sit at with a wide variety of beer to choose from (stouts, ales, sours, etc). They have arcade games and board game you can choose from while there. Towards the front, they have super delicious Mexican food that serves birria tacos! I came here to celebrate my cousin's baby shower - they were able to reserve 4 tables for their party. This is great to know in case you have a special occasion you're looking to book a place to celebrate in. It also looks like on certain days they have live music, but when there's no live performance the place plays great vibey music. Did I mention, this place is also puppy friendly? I have a real soft spot for Alewife. They've long been sponsors of events at my theatre, and their IPAs are great. This Sunnyside location is new. In speaking with the guy running things, he was telling us that they originally wanted to turn the LIC location into a taproom, but the foundation couldn't handle all the brewing equipment. This new location is gigantic and perfect for all that, so it's their new (and sole) taproom. They'll be ramping up production soon enough! As for now, they have a bunch of outdoor seating. They have heatlamps and high tops under an awning, as well as a giant shack in the street. It's not fully enclosed, thankfully, and you have plastic strip doors (the kind you'd have in a walk-in freezer). That plus heatlamps gets you reasonably comfortable, but definitely *temper* your expectations. They have food some days, but we brought food from outside. You do need to buy a food item with a booze purchase, so we got a Sigmund's pretzel for $5. They have tap and canned beers. The Chaos Gozu gose sour was very good, as was the Magical Clouds 2 session IPA. The bathrooms here are also super cool! When all this crap is over, I'm sure this is going to be a really hoppin' spot. read more

This is a great, chill place to have a few beers any time during the week. My most recent visit was during the weeknight happy hour and the type of beer I ordered was only $5. There are games to play and plenty of room to sit at large picnic tables. It wasn't too busy so we were able to safely park our bikes inside. Grabbed some beers at Alewife Brewing & Taproom on Friday afternoon. The beers I tried were decent, but the lack of a sampler size and the limited beers available on tap, both prevented a more full brewery experience. Quality: Alewife Brewing & Taproom has a large selection of beers, but only a small selection of beers on tap. They only offer pints and cans, which limit the opportunity to try a bunch of beers. The quality of the two beers I tried, Celestial Dance, a New England-Style IPA, and Forged In Fire, a Marzen/Oktoberfest, were good, but it is hard to get a full sense of their work. The menu had an okay variety, mixing IPAs, Sours, and a few old-world beers, but most were only in cans. I'm not sure how much of the setup is related to COVID or still figuring out the new location, but it felt lacking even with a long beer list. Quantity: I stuck with the few options of draft pours, which are similar pours to the can sizes. Value: $7-$9 for a Pint or Can of Beer depending on the selection. $5 Beers during Happy Hour. Ambiance: Alewife Brewing & Taproom is located in the Sunnyside area of Queens. They are in a large warehouse, in an industrial part of town. They set up a good amount of outdoor seating, all covered, with a more open area near the building and more sheltered and separated space on the street. While they had tables inside, they appeared to be blocked off, making inside only for restroom access. They were serving the few beers on tap out of coolers near the garage door, which was strange and seemed limiting. Crowd: I arrived in the middle of the day on Friday, so wasn't surprised to find it almost empty. With the odd location it is hard to judge how packed it would get even at more traditional hours. Service: Very kind bartender running the show. She was knowledgeable about the beers and was happy to offer suggestions. Parking: Plenty of street parking in this industrial area. read more
