To me it seemed a bit silly but I obliged and the rest is history. A little backstory for context, Figlmüller I learned was founded over 110 years ago and 4th generation family owned. FYI a schnitzel is basically pork, pounded out to a pizza pie looking shape, breaded and fried to perfection. We shared one along with steak tartare and potato salad. All delicious. Omg! Amazing. We initially went to the wrong location, I'm sure this happens often because after looking for our reservation, he kindly asked us if we had a reservation at the "other" location. That location was absolutely empty, so we were seated immediately. Service was fantastic, we took a few minutes to look at the menu and realized all we wanted were salads and schnitzels, so we placed an order. Food came out within 15m or so. The schnitzel was not only fantastic, but absolutely huge, I mean, it didn't even fit on the plate. The potato and cucumber salads were also a pleasant surprise. We ended up ordering a whole another side of the cucumber salad because it was soooo tasty and refreshing. I highly recommend the three dishes that we ordered (schnitzel, potato salad and cucumber salad). If you come to Austria, you need to eat schnitzel, and if you eat schnitzel, you need to eat here. It was a little bit more upscale and formal than other restaurants, and it's so popular that they had to build this second location. One of our must do when visiting a city is to have a meal at one of the top or high rated local restaurant. Figlmüller was a few blocks from our hotel and so this was one of the first in our list. Dinner on day one was scrumptious!! The schnitzel was light, tender, and crunchy. The serving was so big but I found myself almost finishing up the whole thing. As a tourist in Vienna, I highly recommend this place to eat the Wiener Schnitzel. The original location is so popular that they only take reservations, but they have a second location (this one) around the corner. We waited ~30 minutes in line before we got a table. My friend Sherry and I split the popular schnitzel (breaded and fried veal) and flädlesuppe (beef soup with shredded pancake). The schnitzel was on point and HUGE - you have to share it. Sherry doesn't really like fried stuff, but the fact that even she liked it was surprising to me. I usually don't just eat a chunk of fried meat by itself for dinner, so the soup was a good way to balance my dinner. It was good but a little salty. We also tried the seasonal Sturm (fermented grape juice with very little alcohol). It's a Vienna specialty drink and only available in September/October. As part of our 2 day stay in Vienna, we had to get Wienerschnitzel, and every single travel guide and website recommended Figlmuller. There are two locations to this historic restaurant, but both are pretty close to each other (~5 minute walk). Other reviews have mentioned this, but they seemed to make the reservation at the other restaurant and we had to walk around. Our waiter also spoke English fluently, and the restaurant seemed to cater to tourists, with its menu advertising the historical nature of its "world-famous" schnitzel. As good tourists, we all ordered one schnitzel, and shared some potato salads, lingonberry jam, and grape juices. This was a HUGE mistake. One schnitzel was larger than the plate. Out of 7 of us, only I was able to finish the schnitzel, and we had some big boys in our group. One of the smaller people in our group had around 1/5 of the schnitzel before giving up. The schnitzel itself tasted fine - we were also voraciously hungry before digging in. It reminded me of a Japanese katsu, except without any of the delicious sauce. This takes me to my next point - do NOT try to eat this without any sauce. I felt mentally defeated trying to devour a whole dry-ass schnitzel. Who gives a crap if it is an alleged tourist trap, because my goodness is the schnitzel delicious. Having had a good amount of schnitzel in both Prague and Vienna, the lightness of the batter made the dish lighter and more flavorful. We got some mediocre options and they were all pretty pricy! I ended up getting the schnitzel because it was what they were known for. I also got the Viennese Soup with potato pancake strips. I finished off with the Chocolate cake. The Viennese soup was just 'okay'. Nothing real special about it. Super plain brothe with the strips. It was a small portion too. The schnitzel was HUGE, and it came out with a salad and a the salad was nice and heavy /hearty. The Schnitzel itself was just super bland and plain. Nothing that made it special. I found it to be too dry and some parts of it seemed overcooked. It wasn't juicy at all. It reminded me of a flattened piece of chicken nugget. So just mediocre. I also got a reisling to pair with dinner. Cheap and just okay as well. The service was super inattentive so we kept having to flag them down. This was frustrating. At least the food came out quickly! We ended with the Chocolate souffle cake. It was okay as well. The cake itself was way too dry and it didn't taste like chocolate at all. We preferred the Bäckerstraße location to the original; the multiple small rooms for dining was interesting and the menu was a bit more extensive. Of course schnitzel is why u go to Figlmüller's but the bacon-wrapped goat cheese with arugula appetizer was a great surprise. I can't say enough about the staff. We love Figlmüller and I'm so glad I made a reservation before even leaving the US or we might not have been able to get in during our stay in Vienna. It's so much easier to make a reservation than to stand in line without one (and on the night we went, it would have meant standing outside in the rain). Instead of deep-frying, their schnitzel is pan-fried leaving it crispy but not greasy. After living in Vienna for several years, I can tell you that their schnitzel is the best and their potato salad is (if possible) even better! The Figlmüller schnitzel is the standard order (a larger-than-your-plate sheet of thin pounded pork). This time I got a Wiener schnitzel (veal) to compare. We walked in around 6:00 PM on a weeknight and had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. Actually, their specialty is something called figlmuller schnitzel, which is a fried pork cutlet that literally is as big as your plate and as delicious as it is big. Figlmüller is a restaurant that is a must for every tourist at least once when visiting Vienna. Most of the people sitting in this place aren't locals. That said, Figlmüller serves a solid pan fried pork schnitzel called the Figlmüller Schnitzel. The schnitzel is big and tender, but it is not your classic Wiener Schnitzel, although they have that on the menu as well. Since the restaurant is pretty famous and located in the touristy 1st district, Figlmüller is more expensive than most other local restaurants serving comparable product. For example, Figlmüller is one of the few places that does not include the potato salad (or another side dish) with the order of schnitzel and the side of potato salad is fairly expensive EUR 4. Another place that comes to mind that does that is Schnitzelwirt, where schintzels are just as good (and big) and almost 50% less expensive. Anyway, the atmosphere is typical Austrian and the food is good. Everyone visiting Vienna (or living here) should try Figlmüller at least once. read more

There's a line out the door, its huge inside (nice seating, you're not on top of one another, at least downstairs). Exposed brick walls gives it that cellar fell, but not in a old moldy way. We shared one, one small beer, one nothing special wine, one little side salad (which was really small), total of around 26 Euros.The schnitzel itself was about 14 Euros. I could still eat after. Our other friend ate a whole one on his own (but then he was quite full...) I have a feeling I could have also, but not worth the money really. I would not say the schnitzel was so enormous as they hype and pictures make them out to be. Also, thin meet, so not so juicy, and I do not believe it is the original Viennese veal schnitzel (although there is an option, normal size, about 16 Euros if I remember correctly). There is a line out the door, so use their website and reserve online where on one page you see the availabilities of both locations (which are right next to each other really). its really a long one, still there until past 21:00 on an early week day.
