Menus and bread serving arrived. $4.80 per person. Oh well. We decided to share and we selected the white asparagus with a tomato and egg relish with a vinaigrette and an Order of Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad and lingonberries. Our food arrived very quick. Both dishes quite good. Not the best we have experienced in Vienna and not the worst. - Wiener Schnitzel: best one of the week. It was thin as it should be and not greasy at all. Wish it had been cooked with a little seasoning. Salt and fresh lemon solved that problem. 4/5 - Potato Salad: excellent. Almost addictive. Loved the fresh mache and pumpkin seed oil on it. 5/5 - Cranberry Sauce: or as I call it lingonberry sauce. Average. Tasted like out of a jar. But good. 4/5 - White Asparagus: served with a tomato herb vinaigrette with chopped egg. Wish the asparagus had been served warm then topped with the vinaigrette. Would made the dish pop. Teve served us tonight and he was outstanding. His recommendations were spot on. Great personality and hard worker. We started off with the steak tartare, the best I've had. The tartare has a kick from the peppers. The goose liver crème brûlée is a must try. The carpaccio was good but not as good as the other two appetizers. I ordered the suggested boiled beef. My wife and I made a reservation the night before to dine here for dinner on a Sunday evening. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table by the window in the dining room with a view of the kitchen. An assistant server, setup us up with a bottle of water and a bread basket with butter and a yummy chive spread. Our server survived a mini barrage of questions by my wife before taking her order. (Duck Liver Creme Brulee: SS) - This was my favorite dish I had during my entire week long visit in Vienna. The duck liver is a lovely fatty upgrade to the traditional butter to pair with bread, and the cranberry jam was instrumental in adding contrast and acidity to help make the dish balanced. I loved that they elevated this dish by making it a creme brulee with that caramelized sugar crust, and microgreens to make it a high class dish. All this was only 10 euros! (Salmon: C) - Although it tastes reasonable, the heavy presence of the white sauce I feel seems to add flavor in a way that does not lift and brighten the flavor of the salmon in a carpaccio, and this setup may work better with a crispy skin salmon skewer. (Wiener Schnizel: A) - I was impressed by the tenderness of the veal, which paired well with their tartar-like sauce, and their horseradish-based sauce to add some flavor complexity. The intricate detail used to cut the lemon was also quite impressive as a way to highlight sophistocated technique. (Beef Offal: D) - This dish certainly does not gets its appeal from looking like a murder scene, but the offal is quite tender and pleasant to consume. I could not care for the dumplings as they are just a ball of flour. We didn't have a reservation but they found us a seat immediately inside of the restaurant (they have both outdoor and indoor dining). Our server was super nice and brought us table bread-- around 5 different types of rolls--to begin with along with butter and some nice chive/mustard aioli which I think is included in the table service cover charge according to their website. These breads were all delicious and very unique, some flaky and fluffy, others more like a traditional pretzel roll etc. Really helped because we were starving when we got there. For food we ordered: -Wiener Schnitzel: when people say this is a tourist trap, they probably mean you will definitely be trapped here in Vienna because you will not want to leave after eating this ... truly the best schnitzel I have had in my life. Incredibly thin and tender pieces of veal that are only lightly battered and which come with lemon and this cranberry sauce which adds a nice sweet/ tangy contrast to the dish. The schnitzel was really flavorful and not oily at all-- for someone with really bad intolerance to fried food, this didn't make me feel a thing-- and was a perfect, satisfying portion. - Potato salad (Erdäpfelsalat): they recommend that you pair the schnitzel with this salad and I really second this! Not like the usual American potato salad, this is lighter, and has nice flavors of vinegar and mustard. Super flavorful and feels a lot healthier. **RACIST RESTAURANT** We visited the restaurant on September 15th around 8 PM. A waiter whose name starts with J, was supposedly in charge of serving foreigners (English speakers), was assigned to our table. Despite his slightly unfriendly attitude, we understood that he might have been busy, as all the other waiters were kind and polite. The real issue arose when after the main course. After the main dish was cleared and the coffee menu was placed on our table, Mr. J immediately left and didn't return to our table for around 30 minutes. We noticed he had other tables to serve, but even after finishing with them, he spent around 10 minutes chatting with the customers at the table next to us--right in front of us. Even when we tried to get his attention as he passed by, he ignored us. Frustrated from waiting, we eventually asked another passing waiters a few times to bring us the bill. It was only after we asked for the waiter's name that J finally acknowledged us; if we hadn't asked for his name, we would have waited twice as long. When we explained that we had been unable to order dessert because he ignored us, he didn't offer an apology but instead made excuses. The food and the other waiters were great, but J's behavior gave us bad experience in Vienna. As someone who lives in Europe now and has traveled to many countries, I'm certain this was racism and microaggression. You need to make this right IMMEDIATELY. read more

Just so you know, I'm of Asian descent and visited this place with my mother three years ago. The staff told us there were no available seats and led us to a table along the path to the restroom. A table right by the restroom--can you believe that? The entree was served simply with warm potato salad and lemon. I ordered a beer with dinner and P had two glasses of wine. The food was good, but not as special as we had expected. The staff seemed quite distracted by the other patrons, leaving us to flag down someone for more water and finally the bill. With additional charges for other items listed in German, our dinner cost about 72 Euros plus tip. Our last night in Vienna. We'd had some adequate meals, but nothing really spectacular and the schnitzel had been good, but no better. We really wanted to give Viennese cuisine a fair shot before we left. I watch my companions roll their eyes in ecstasy at the consommé with amusement, but we I tried it all it could say was "I had no idea that this was a level to which consommé could aspire." (I actually really did say that!) So forget everything else on the menu. Just have the beef in consommé. ^_^ In all seriousness, this was a lovely location, the food and wine were really very good and it was worth every penny we paid. The waiter was exceptional, friendly and funny and helpful. It left us with a pleasant feeling as we left Vienna. It was very full (many, many tourists!) and the waitstaff was working very quickly to try to serve everyone, but they were friendly despite how hard they were working. We ordered a bottle of Grüner Veltiner and enjoyed the rolls and spreads (butter and what I'm assuming was quark, seasoned with herbs) while we perused the menu. We both wound up ordering the Wiener Schnitzel. Having eaten at Figlmüller, we wanted to compare them! We liked the vinegar based potato salad, but it was somewhat on the watery side. The schnitzel itself was gorgeous. Thicker than Figlmüller's and more naturally shaped, with puffy breading. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and found the schnitzel delicious, but we both preferred Figlmüller's in the end. We also shared a dessert- some kind of lava cake with whipped cream, and my husband got an after dinner drink. We were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable price we paid, and would recommend Gasthaus zur Oper for special occasions or if you have Opera tickets, because it really is nearby. If it's Weiner Schnitzel you are after, then you are at the right place. That said I didn't have schnitzel anywhere else during my stay in Vienna, so I don't have anything local to compare it to. But a friend who was born and reared in Vienna recommended it to us, so I knew we were onto a good thing. We arrived 30 minutes early and were prepare to go for one drink somewhere if needed, but were given a table immediately and provided with a basket of yummy warm bread that came with an even yummier spread to put on it. For starters I went for the Carpaccio and my partner the Steak Tartar with chilli. Both were excellent. But I can honestly say there was no food envy on my part, I loved the Carpaccio, it was really great. For mains I went for the Weiner Schnitzel and my partner the Tafelspitz. The schnitzel was very tasty, but the accompanying potato salad (as it was described on the English menu) wasn't to my taste. The beef in the Tafelspitz was also very tasty. I opted not to try the bone marrow myself, but my partner assured me it was very tasty. The wine we ordered was an Austrian Sauvignon Blanc that was just divine - I will edit this review once I find the photoI took of the bottle. We sat outside, which was very comfortable and the service was extremely prompt and friendly. I did find when were ordering that the waiter was a little pushy and we ended up ordering a side he recommended which we really didn't need it. There was more than enough food with what came with our mains and the starters were fairly substantial also. Two starters, two mains, one side and a bottle of wine came to about 103 EUR (wine was about 30 EUR). It is a little pricey, but very worth it. Had a reservation on Saturday evening and they seated us 10 minutes early, very nice. They didn't ask us about outside vs. inside seating when we called, and we got stuck inside on a beautifully warm late summer day. The bread they served was great, as was the Gänseleber (goose liver) they had. Our waiter neither spoke very good German nor English. Half way into the dinner, they more or less abandoned our little area of the restaurant. Our neighboring table asked them to take some empty plates away and had to ask three times (the last one loudly) until somebody bothered to take action. I'm a great lover of Southern Fried Chicken, of the American variety, and I was fascinated to find out it was a traditional Austrian dish. Schnitzel can wait, I thought. Give me some fried chicken, bitte! I also had a chance to try radler for the first time. It's a type of beer that mixes in lemonade and tastes totally refreshing. Make sure you make reservations - and if you don't - as we failed to do, be prepared to sit at the bar - which isn't so bad at the end of the day. I had goose liver for the appetizer and the bread are crispy with liver which come with some kind of sweet jam make it feel balance not so oily. My main course is boiled beef which I forgot the name.
