I stayed at a nearby hotel and when I told the concierge I went here for schnitzel. He stated that, as a local, this wouldn't be his first preference and seemed to respectfully imply that I had expensive taste (but did say it was a good spot). I should've responded, "I'm a tourist, so yes, I do have expensive taste." (not quoting some Icelandic-Chinese singer or anything, of course) While I know that their Tafelspitz is their signature, I wanted some schnitzel. However, I ordered a bowl of the broth the beef was cooked in, which also comes with root vegetables. Surprisingly (or not), this was the best part of the dinner. The broth's depth of flavor is apparent and it's so savory. The broth is also clean and clear. This was definitely one of the best broths I've had and this alone puts the restaurant at a 5. I went for the schnitzel and got suckered into getting the potato salad. The salad was fine; a little tangy, with the potatoes keeping their definition. However, it's nothing amazing. The schnitzel is super-thin and breading is nicely browned. The veal is rather tender, but you need the lemon to "wake-up" the schnitzel. The bread basket was a bit diverse and the selections were fine. I thought the wheat roll was the best of the choices. The apricot juice was really thick, so it definitely appeared to be legit juice. My server was pretty friendly for Vienna and actually did a little bit a conversation. The decor is classy but not stuffy. *******READ FINE PRINT ON MENU********* I have issues with this place. My review will not change the trajectory of how this place operates. However, it is unlike any place in the world I have ever visited. We were seated at a table that was meant for 6 people and got taken down to two people as there was another couple sitting there. The place for lunch was absolutely slammed, so it is obviously a popular spot. Without asking, they drop bread off at the table. With a place of this atmosphere it was expected, as this is what I would expect out of a finer food establishment. The schnitzel was very light and had plenty of flavor. No other sides came with the schnitzel so I had the potato salad which was good, but different. The beef stroganoff did have an immense amount of flavor. They lacked the very small amount of noodles that are given with this dish. The fastest uninterrupted service we got was when I waited and finally asked for the check. They were quick to give me a dessert/after food drink menu. They were quick to be on top of me to see if I wanted anything. I declined and paid the bill. What I will tell you is, that is completely OUTRAGEOUS is the charge listed as 2 - Gedeck. A quick review told me that it is a "Cover Charge" at a euro rate of 4.90 per person. A further Google review told me that it is also because they placed bread on the table (I do not know what is factual). Regardless of whatever the charge is or whatever they want to call it, I have never ever ever paid a "Cover Charge/Gedek" charge to occupy a restaurant. If this was a late night spot that I decided to pop bottles at or had "dancers" at the business, I could get there, but for a sit down lunch, what a complete utter rip off. This in itself would cause me never to return to this establishment. Make sure if you eat here, that you read the fine print or look at my pictures. They have very small print that notifies the consumer of them charging cover charge as well as what they charge for sharing of some dishes. Went with friends while in vacation, we really enjoyed. I had the cream of asparagus soup which was delicious, in the bottom had slices of white asparagus, a few small crunch croutons on top. Came by on a trip to Vienna after seeing the tafelspitz featured. The restaurant is very nice and teeming with staff. Even at 9 or 10pm it was very crowded with most of the tables occupied. Service was very gruff but attentive and quick. Everything came out very quickly but we never felt rushed. The schnitzel was tasty and came with adequate lemon. It was great that it came with side sauces as well (including a very delicious horseradish applesauce). Out hotel recommended Plachutta for lunch one day, and I'm so glad they did. Probably the best meal I had in Vienna. I'd never heard of Tafelspitz, or this kind of meal, so it was fun to learn, as well as delicious. We sat outside on a beautiful day, and Plachutta is beautiful and elegant (the only drawback being getting dripped on by the mister machine). They have a little instruction manual (more fun), and our neighbor diner also described the process of the meal, starting with the beef broth soup (with such great pancake "noodle" slices!), then on to bone marrow on toast (eat with your fingers! the manual says), and culminating in the tender beef with root vegetables. The soup was absolutely delicious. If this was all in the meal I would have been satisfied. I'm not the biggest bone marrow fan, but I did enjoy this on the toast. The beef and vegetables was almost anticlimactic, but also very good. The beef was accompanied by some wonderful sides and garnishes, including apple/horseradish, a cream sauce, and a delicious creamed spinach. I'm not sure if I could have distinguished between all the different cuts of beef on the menu. I guess you need to do this a few times! No dessert or coffee for us this time. It's rare that after all these years of eating around the world I encounter something truly novel to my palate. I can totally see why Tafelspitz was a favorite dish of Emperor Franz Josef, since it's delicious and has many different phases from the same pot. I think the first phase with that delicious broth was my favorite. It had the long simmered richness of beef pho, minus the Asian spices. Perhaps the best beef broth I've ever had. Instead of noodles, there were thin pancake slices that worked well. I also like the thinly sliced and tender veggies in the mix. The second phase was truly indulgent where you scoop out a marrow bone, spread a heaping portion of bone marrow on toast and then season with salt and pepper. Bone marrow as an appetizer is not new to me, but fishing the bone out of the soup that it had flavored was new and exciting. The final phase felt like prime rib dinner service, but with pot roast as the meat. I liked the presentation of fried potato shreds, blended spinach, apple horseradish sauce and creamy chives sauce. The meat chunks did indeed taste like their "boiled beef" name translation, so felt like common pot roast. But with memories of the previous two phases, it was still elevated in my mind. The place also felt kinda fancy with table clothes and formally dressed waiters. While we had it as a late lunch after a long day of tourist trekking, many other people seemed to be having fancy business lunches to impress their business guests. read more

Had lunch at Plachutta today... The good: outdoor seating is really nice, service is friendly enough, food came out quickly, and food is tasty for the most part. The not-so-good: prices are ridiculously high (this seems like an understatement). As if this isn't bad enough they charge a nearly 5 euro cover fee per person for stale bread and table service. And then they have a note on their receipt that the service charge is not included. Bottom line: prices are too high to consider returning, especially when there are way better restaurants in Vienna. read more

The food was good and very traditional Austrian, but the atmosphere and service made the experience uncomfortable. We felt rushed throughout the meal--my server attempted to clear my plate just 5-10 minutes after it was served, while there was still clearly food on it. When I asked about ordering a dish, the explanation was confusing and overwhelming, and I felt pressured into agreeing. The result was several unexpected add-on vegetable charges on the bill, which was frustrating. The restaurant is extremely touristy, with a line out the door, and in my opinion it's very overhyped. Would like to add that it is way over priced for what you get and if you do go don't let them talk you into something else as they are definitely trying to upsell you. Ambiance is a mix of local families and tourists, but this is not the typical touristy place. Service was fast, not too friendly but expedient. It is really good: tender, crispy, buttery. Go with potato salad or cucumber salad so you have something fresh in your palate to balance the Schnitzel. Now, locals share Tafelspitz and you should too. Do a bit of research and pick the meat that best suits you. Procedure : start with the soup, they will bring a big bowl to share and individual bowls for each person. They should serve you the first scoops. I had 'pancakes' (thin slices of thin bread) as a bed for the soup. Delicious! Then, go for the bone marrow. Yes, just do it please. I have eaten it since i was a kid. They do a good job here. Take the bone marrow out of the bowl and spread it on your bread. It is a perfect companion to the soup. The meat was a bit underwhelming, i tried the mint sauce and made it more interesting, with more texture. We had to skip dessert, as this was plenty! Excellent dinner for a cold winter night. The worst restaurant in Vienna? Probably. I mean, they charge you €4.80 for silverware. I've visited 28 countries and have never had a worse dining experience anywhere, including in the US. Especially not one that cost me €51. Maybe Plachutta was good once upon a time, but that's now a fairy tale: i.e. a nice story that isn't real. Where to start with how bad this place is, I don't even know. I started writing this before I even got my food. That's how bad it is. Let's start at the beginning. The hostess was your typical ice cold Austrian. (Obviously the concept of hospitality died when it arrived in Vienna. While this is a city-wide problem, not Plachutta specific, they are certainly making sure to keep the inhospitable Viennese tradition alive and well). My waiter asked how I was, so I asked how he was. He tells me he's sick. And sure enough, he's coughing all over the place. I have 7 more days left of my trip and I really don't want to get sick. He should not be at work. Or at the very least he should be wearing a mask. We all have a drawer of leftover masks from Covid - have some common courtesy buddy. I get stuck at a table right by the entrance which shouldn't even exist. I get blasted with cold air every time someone comes in and the waitstaff bump into my table pretty much every time they come to the computer that's right beside me to enter an order. Including the sick waiter who keeps coming over to the computer and coughing, literally a foot away from my head. They have five wines by the glass. I ordered the Blaufrankisch and it's disgusting. I've been here for four days and had several glasses of Blaufrankish elsewhere and I know how it's supposed to taste. This is worse than Two Buck Chuck. It's flavorless, it tastes like purple watery alcohol with that distinctive super cheap wine aftertaste. You know what I'm talking about. Look, I will drink mediocre wine and have. Many times. Also, I HATE complaining about things at restaurants. I was a waitress for YEARS in a big city and I understand what a thankless job it is. But this wine is undrinkable. I asked if they have any other wines and said the one I have is "disgusting." The waiter confirmed there were no other wine option and walked away. Um, really? I at least expected "can I get you something else?" So the food comes out and ok, the broth is pretty good, but very salty. The rest of the meal is foul. The texture of the meat is like overcooked roast beef. It has a bitter flavor and is so salty it's nearly inedible. The potatoes don't taste like potato anymore because they're basically all salt. At this point I'm trying to cut my losses so I asked if they could remove the couvert because I haven't - and won't - touch the bread basket. The waiter replies that he cannot because the €4.80 couvert is for silverware too. THEY. CHARGE. YOU. FOR. SILVERWARE. No other purportedly nice sit-down white-tablecloth restaurant in the world would dare charge you for silverware. But see my comment above about Vienna and hospitality. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They did at least take the disgusting wine off the bill. That doesn't make up for the rest of the horrible experience though. There are many other places you can get Tafelspitz in Vienna. Go to one of those. Don't waste your money in this tourist trap. read more

After much research, I had this Plachutta location selected to get my first Viennese meal. As I was waiting for my luggage at the airport, I saw video advertisements for Plachutta above the conveyor belts. But I did read this particular location seems to be more popular with locals and better than the other ones. Perhaps because of the heavy tourist advertising, my expectations were low...but everything was outstanding. And the Wiener Schnitzel left me searching for one as good on the rest of my trip, and I never could. Chanterelle mushroom terrine appetizer - 4 stars. This was a very nice beginning that had a richness to it, along with some greens. Perhaps a little crunchy something would have been nice to spread it on. Tafelspitz- 5 stars. The reason for coming really, as it's a fun word to say, and one of the most popular Viennese dishes. Kind of like an Asian Hot pot, but eaten in reverse, first the broth is served and then the sliced tender beef is plated with crispy potatoes. Also enjoyed the horseradish applesauce side that you eat with the beef. We ordered this for 2, but along with other dishes ate it family style for 4. Wiener Schnitzel - 5 stars. Like I said best I had while in Vienna. Nice and crispy on the outside, tender savory veal on the inside. The vinegar like room temperature potato salad is very important to enhance each bite as is a light squeeze of lemon. Goulash and dumplings - 5 stars. Then hotel called and called and it turned out they overbooked and bumped our reservation. We waited around half of an hour, standing by the bar, for a table. Waiter was rude from the start to the end. We wanted to order sides for the beef soup and he kept on saying there's already vegetable in the soup. We ordered after finishing one portion and received the most appalling comment that "you are big". Forced to tip. We only tipped 8% which was the minimum shown on the credit card machine. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. I have always enjoyed eating at Plachutta and have dined at several of their locations. (I prefer the "gasthaus zur opera" while my daughter in law prefers this one.) As always, the food was great. The Wiener Schnitzel was perfect - a large portion, perfectly seasoned and breaded and tender; and the accompanying potato salad was the perfect pairing. The Tafelspitz (an Austrian dish of boiled beef) was great - the broth rich and tasty and the beef tender. The beef tips over noodles was not quite up to the others; the beef was not tender, but still tasty. Most of our (large) party were too full for desert, but the crème brûlée was to die for good. The "house brew" Ottakringer Beer is my favorite - and didn't disappoint. There is a good selection of wines as well. So, with all of that "good," what was bad? The service! Vienna restaurants are not known for great service, but this was outright horrible. The manager didn't seat us for 15 minutes notwithstanding an advance reservation for a large table - which was set and open the entire time. Our waiter took the drink order and then forgot to bring the drinks and the head server took forever to take our order. I ordered the infamous Tafelspitz, a typical Austrian beef stew served with creamed spinach and hash browned potatoes. It was so delicious, although they didn't explain how to properly eat it a diagram was provided. First you drink the soup, then you spread the bone marrow onto the bread, then you take the beef out and eat it alongside your spinach and potatoes. In short, a very famous restaurant having in the menu some "world famous tafelspitz". Since I have never heard of this "world famous" food before, I had to try it. Guys. This was my first time having Vienna's traditional Tafelspitz (aka boiled beef) and MAN. You will go crazy for this dish once you take your first bite! Would recommend making reservations in advance, but if you don't have time/didn't come across this lovely restaurant beforehand, try walking in at off peak hours for a chance to dine at this classy, delicious place. First off- the beef broth with thinly sliced cuts of carrots is to die for. Not overly salty and super flavorful. I can drink this broth as if it were water. All day and everyyyyday. We ordered 3 different cuts of the Tafelspitz in order to sample different parts of the cow. Here is my analysis: 1) TAFELSPITZ: The original, most popular. This is the rump aka booty of the cow. A bit dry in my opinion, but hey, if you are not a fan of marbling and are a well done kind of steak person, this is the cut for you. 2) SCHULTERSCHERZEL - shoulder part of the cow that is described to be lightly marbled and very juicy. WHOA. This was definitely a step up from the Tafelspitz and was coming close to being my favorite. I'm a medium rare kind of girl soooo more marbling= win win for me. But wait...! There's something even better. 3) KAVALIERSPITZ - a juicer section of the shoulder. Holy moly. Yes, this is the real winner! So tender and not overly fatty (don't worry guys- definitely not close to eating pork belly kind of fatty). This seriously was the perfect cut for me! All tafelspitz orders come with fried potato rosti (kind of like pan fried crispy hash browns), vegetables, divine creamy chive sauce and horse radish w/ apple (apple sauce w/ a twang). Since it's white asparagus season, we also ordered that with the classic Hollandaise sauce. BAM. This place is so divine! You will love boiled beef after this place. I promise. read more
