07/24/10 Popped in for a few minutes before having lunch at Sakura to see what they had in store, and boy, did I have a blast from the past! Fil-Am packs a lot of baked goodies for such a tiny shop. However tiny it was, I very much appreciated the organized layout of their products. The shop was clean and bright, and I could see and gaze at all the lovely sweets all decked out in shelves and behind the deli cases without feeling overwhelmed. There was even a buffet spread of hot foods, such as adobo, sinigang, bangus, pork barbeque, and fried banana-que! I had to have a slice of the sans rival as soon as I laid my eyes upon it! This cake is a delightful amalgam of eggwhites, sugar, butter, crushed almonds, and almond paste that result in layers and layers of crunchy meringue and sweet, buttery almond-scented filling, that make this cake both rich, yet light and delicate! You will love the crunch you will hear, and feel, as you slice through the cake w/ your fork and take a bite! Then, just as soon as your teeth crunch through, you feel the layers almost melt as they hit your tongue! You won't be able to have just one bite; I dare you to try! However great that sans rival was, the pan de coco was even better! Sure, it contained shortening (I try to stay away from trans fats), but this freshly-grated, sweetened and toasted coconut-stuffed pastry (reminiscent of a croissant) wasn't sickly-sweet like some pan de coco can be. I had to follow up my previous review with an update. Last night, I had dinner at the Thai place next door and stopped by to look in the display window to see if the decor at the bakery had been updated. SURPRISE!! No more dead flies. This time, it was CRAWLING--C-R-A-W-L-I-N-G with roaches of different sizes--all over the cakes and the display window itself. How this place is still open is beyond me. Please don't tell me you don't see these roaches when you walk in there to open the bakery. Absolutely disgusting!!! People--children are eating there (I assume)and this is what it looks like??? I wish I would've taken a picture so I could post it. But I'm sure anyone could stop in there after closing and watch the roach show begin. Shame on you Fil-Am!! You clearly don't care. Do everyone a favor and close down this unsanitary dump you want to pass as a bakery. AVOID THIS PLACE!! read more

Can't believe how horrible the mamon was. The turo turo did not look appetizing, at all. Will not be back.

Since I'm on the fence with this place, I give it 3 stars after visiting here a handful of times. There are definitely some goods and bads. The goods are conditional too which is why I gave it 3 stars. The conditionally good part is the buffet. If you go in around noon the buffet is still hot, savory and tasty. I'm not sure about dinner time so I can't comment about that. Some foods however are kind of cold and I'm sure they'll warm it up for you if you ask. You get a heaping pile of rice and 2 sides for $5.99 which is a good deal considering it's enough for two in my opinion. The bads are the pastries. It's overly sweet that lacks balance in flavor, texture, etc. I enjoy pastries from Paris Baguette and other Korean and Japanese bakeries. No offense to the baker here but it wasn't good - I can't eat the sweets here and would rather buy from the bakery in Shoprite (which I never buy from either). The old man who owns and runs the place can be grumpy old man. We went in there yesterday and I asked him what one of the items in the buffet was. All he said was the Filipino name of the item without any description of what was in it, the type of flavor it was, etc. I wanted to tell him "thanks a lot @$$h0le" but I bit my tongue. After he saw our faces and recognized that I've been there a few times before, he was friendly to me. The lady that works here (I think his wife) is very kind. She'll even give you spoon samples to try flavors in the buffet. I assume this place is fairly good to the local Filipino community. I seen them do trays of catering (Catering menu at the front counter). Maybe I'll order something for catering someday. Advice to the owners: Your menu needs descriptions. Better seating arrangements inside would be a big improvement. I wish you could do something about your pastries but I'm not a Filipino food expert so I don't know if this is considered as "delicious" or "good" for Filipino pastries. Advice to Yelpers: The buffet is cheap and good. Ask for spoon samples so it can help you decide. Also, you can probably ask them to get something heated up. This is not a dinner place! read more

My eyes lite up when I saw the sign Fil-Am bakery and was salivating for good homemade Filipino baked goods like back home....even stopped my daughter from going to Rama Thai first to order dinner.... And my eagerness was dashed by the sight of uncovered dried up buffet food which were in serving pans w/o heat! Ensaymadas loaded w white candied sugar. Mamon that tasted like cardboard. Shame shame shame. this is such a disappointment and wonder how it got a 4 star review? read more
