I was in town for a wedding and there was a break between my arrival and the event so I hit up Filet & Vine based on the excellent reviews. I also wanted to squeeze in some shopping and wasn't too hungry so I got something to go. I figured a sandwich would be the best option. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich. So big! I ended up having to share it with my brother. Pretty tasty. I do recommend. I know nothing about the hot food bar, but alot of folks were selecting it. If you are looking for some authentic southern eats, this is the place to go. It is a grocery and wine store as well but I didn't really do much shopping there. But I did do lots of eating. They have a soup and salad bar, sandwich stand, and a hot food bar. Amongst the hot food, you pick a meat from a selection of 6 (varies each day) and 2 sides from a selection of a dozen or so. Prices vary depending on the meat you pick. If you are looking for a vegetarian option, they offer a 3 or 4-side platter. Everything was Delicious! We stopped in to this charming litle place for lunch. Part liquor store, part bucher, part grocer, part lunch counter--all good. We were with a friend that knew he staff and a lot of the customers by name so it had that quaint small town feel to it. The food was excellent and priced incredibly low based on what we're used to paying for lunch. Baked, fried, & smothered meats & hearty side dishes. I always get my food to go & it's always good. Sometimes I only get a plate of sides & I'm still satisfied. Some of my favorites are the turnip greens, wild rice, broccoli & cheese casserole, cabbage, & mixed veggies just to name a few! Now on the next side of the building in an extensive wine selection! Beer too but im not a beer fan. They almost have every wine you can think of......& if they don't, depending on what it is...they'll order it for you! We love coming to Filet & Vine! We're normally busy during the week so we typically come for lunch on Saturdays. The hot bar selection is fantastic and I've never got something that didn't taste great. Some of our favorite things to get are the fried fish, new potatoes, turnip green, mac n cheese, and the jalapeño cornbread. You really can't go wrong with any of the other options, though. My only complaint is that sometimes you might get the short end of the stick and be given a small piece of meat because it's what's left on the hot bar if they haven't refilled it yet. read more

This place was really cool and super crowded. Apparently it's where all the cool kids go!! JK JK. But seriously, for it to be in an unexpected part of town it must be good to be SO crowded. I arrived at around 11:30 and had to circle the block to find a place and just happened upon someone leaving a prime spot. I wouldn't expect that to happen again though. As I walked in this crowded bustling place I noticed it was more like a market than what I had originally imagined. One side looks very much like a grocery store and the other holds the wonders of the steamy buffet and busy kitchen. I found the end of the line which was backed up nearly to the other side of the store. The line meanders along a selection of fresh produce, a small wine rack, a grab-n-go refrigerated unit, the soup and salad bar, and finally a meat case . I enjoyed looking at the prepackaged meals and fresh meats and cheeses as I waited in line. There is a small menu available of made-to-order sandwiches. All of which sound delicious but I already had my mind set on a meat and 2 plate. The buffet is fast paced with one guy asking you for your meat choice who then passes your plate along to the next guy who scoops your vegetables, then on to the bread guy, and finally arriving behind the cashier to await your payment. I would definitely advise looking up the assortment of meats and vegetables available for the day before you arrive so that you don't have to be the annoying person standing in line ogling the selection and taking up precious time to decide what looks better, because it all looks good. Based on the recommendations of the the previous commenters I had decided on a boneless fried chicken breast with black eyed peas, sweet potato casserole, and a jalapeno cornbread muffin. I was sure there was no way that I would like the sweet potato casserole because no one makes it like momma, but it came highly recommended so I tried it anyway. It was actually really good, no not as good as momma's simply because it was different but still worthy of praise. It was smooth and creamy and not stringy. The biggest difference in theirs is that they used cinnamon instead of the brown sugar topping that I am used to. The beans were perfectly cooked. The cornbread muffin was a great pairing for the beans. The fried chicken breast was huge! I could only eat half of it and took the other half home. I sat outside so that I wouldn't be bothered by the crowded dining area and noise level. Somedays it may be too hot to do that in Alabama and still eat the wholesome meal you will be receiving. FYI: They do accept credit cards but not Discover. Definitely, if you have the time and you are looking for a good Southern meal then this would be worth a stop. This place is pretty awesome! Like everyone else says, the hot bar food and alcohol selection are money! I've been here twice so far and plan to come several more times while I'm in Montgomery. I've gone for the hot bar twice now and really liked the bbq pork chops and the cabbage and the mashed potatoes and their chicken...let's just say all the hot bar food was on point. I did have an issue with the first pork chop that I got. It was hard as a rock so I went back to exchange it for a fresher one. What the guy behind the counter did completely dumbfounded me though. He took my plate back over the hot bar (you're really not supposed to take food back once it's made its way over) and then asked his boss to make sure he could give me another one...and then takes mine which I partially cut into and put it back into the hot bar with the other pork chops. =O What he should've done was offer me another pork chop, put it on another plate and tell me to keep my plate with me. Anyway, servers weren't all that smart on foodserving regulation or customer service. I've come to the store twice at 6pm just before they shut down the hot bar at 6:30pm and even though they're getting ready to close, it doesn't mean their customer service needs to shut down too. They took way too long making sandwiches for my friends even though we were the only customers left in the store....but what they made apparently tasted really good. For the price of the sandwiches, I think it could use some more garnish or an extra side because I could probably eat like 4 of their wraps to get full. I also think that since they're about to throw out most of their food anyway, it'd be nice to spare some of that and give it to customers. I just hate seeing good food go to waste. Ok, I know this review seems really negative, but I swear the food here is really good. They offer 10% off for cops, fire, medics and military. They have wine tasting on Thursdays from 5-6:30pm and occasionally have beer tastings too! Because the food here is good, that weighs pretty heavily for a place that operates more as a market than a restaurant. I was visiting on business from Chicago, and stumbled upon this place. The outside is an understatement of the culinary delights that lay inside. Combination deli, grocer, produce, and wine merchant, I was amazed by the selection of wines and other cold beverages (Jones Cola included). The lunch menu varies by day of the week. I was there on a Wednesday, and had the Chicken Fundido (which was fun indeed), broccoli and cheese, mac & cheese, and corn bread. The food was wonderful. A bus boy cleared my table at the perfect moment. Seating was a plenty despite the busy lunch crowd. Originally from the south, I had my hopes set high for some good southern cooking during my short visit from Chicago to Montgomery. This place is great! I stopped in here for lunch on the long and boring drive between New Orleans and Atlanta. With four and a half stars on Yelp, I figured this would be a slam dunk. Filet and Vine is actually a mini-mart / convenience store with a hot bar. There's nothing wrong with that in and of itself, but the food was definitely stick-to-yer-ribs, doused-in-butter-and-covered-in-cheese, down home cookin'. If you're not used to that kind of food or if you're looking for lighter fare, this is probably not the place for you. I had a pulled pork sandwich and wasn't very impressed. My partner had some mac and cheese, fried chicken, and collards and said it was alright. Other customers were piling their plates high and pigging out. I just... didn't really get it. The pulled pork I got was better than I was expecting, though I was more wowed by the broccoli casserole, squash casserole, and greens. What REALLY sets Filet and Vine apart, though, is the alcohol. They were doing it even before Alabama's backwards laws were repealed, but today they are far and away the best place in Montgomery when it comes to beer selection. It comes at a price, however, and that price is pretty high - most bombers are close to surpassing the $10 mark, and after coming from Hop City in B'ham, there's a little bit of sticker shock. The only problem about the food is that if you come here for lunch, you might be sleep at your desk by 2 o'clock. GROCERY: A nice small selection of meats, produce, and seasonings. I love the South for veggie sides. But I've learned after 2 years in AL that veggie sides can mean most anything--including mac & cheese or greens cooked with ham. But at Filet and Vine--which David and I stumbled across while checking out the Old Cloverdale neighborhood of Montgomery--the folks behind the counter know which sides really are veggie. I loved the creamed corn. The tomatoes and okra and the mixed veggies were really good too. This place is great. You can get salad or shop for vino. The hot bar was chock full of delicious looking tidbits. I decided to go with the fried chicken, and double the sides. A typical plate comes with one entree, two sides, and a bread (either cornbread or dinner roll). For my sides, I went with turnip greens (smokey and delectible), black eyed peas (with a HUGE chunk of smokey in them), mac 'n' cheese (good, but not great), and sweet potato caserole (the perfect dessert). Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. It wasn't too busy, but I assume that's because there was a big basketball game on TV (Alabama & Kentucky). A good solid 4 stars, bordering on 5. My husband & I found this place in route to Birmingham. Never would have considered stopping in this little town if it hadn't been so highly recommend. Totally unexpected! Parking was difficult. I recommend to turn down a side street a park a block or so away. There was a slight wait in line on a Friday @ 12:30, but enjoyed viewing the quality produce and exceptional cuts of meats while waiting. Gives you a sense of the food quality before you even get a glimpse of the tasty daily offerings. The daily meat selections included fried chicken or pork chops, some BBQ items, fried grouper, grilled salmon & a couple of others I've forgotten. Definitely something for everyone. Many typical southern sides as well, all that we had were yummy and much less fat content that is usually associated with this type of cuisine. The portions were more than generous. The wine section was another unexpected delight. Amazing selection & a very knowledgeable salesperson helped us select 3 wines we hadn't tried before. Prices were reasonable considering this is not exactly the big city. They have free wine tastings every Thursday. We will definitely rec mend this to our family & friends traveling along hwy 65. Hope to stop on a different day of the week on our next visit so that we can try some of their other dishes. read more

As someone who is a big fan of craft beer I really enjoyed the local selection available here as well as what the store offered from other areas. I am not from the area and have never had a selection of beer from the Alabama and surrounding regions, so being here was like being a kid in some kind of a store. One of the gentlemen working here was clearly as much of a fan as I am and was very helpful in directing me towards what he recommended from local craft brews. Interestingly eclectic space which combines a small Neighborhood market, butcher shop, a wine store, and a deli with an extensive hot food bar full of yummy southern comfort foods, delicious broad spectrum of made to order sandwiches including a Cuban and Banh Mi. They also have a friendly, helpful staff. We had Banh Mi (not exactly like I have had before, but very tasty) served with some yummy chips and we topped it off with a slice of Italian cake which was a genuine slice of heaven. This is the best place to get Deep South goodness while getting that Southern hospitality that most people have grown to love. I love coming here for the extensive wine and beer selections. There are wines and beers from all over the world, and the prices are not expensive. For Christmas, I was able to purchase an aged red wine on sale for $25. Not only does this place sells wine and beer, but customers can find great seasonings and condiments to compliment meats and veggies. if possible, you must purchase the Dirk's seasoning. Although it is meat seasoning, I used it on my veggies. Being a Southern girl who loves to eat, I can't resist the hot bar. The customer stands in a line and order food cafeteria style. Each time I've visited, there were all men in the back cooking and serving. Trust me ladies, there is nothing like a man who can cook :-) The first case has a variety of meats. My dining companion ordered fried fish, and I ordered the four veggie plate. I had the pleasure of experiencing the mac and cheese, cabbage, corn, and broccoli and cheese. The mac and cheese was extremely cheesy and delicious. I would return for the mac and cheese alone. The cabbage was seasoned perfectly, but I am used to cabbage being steamed longer. Although it wasn't cooked hot I would've like, the cabbage tasted great. The corn was wonderful. The corn bring back memories of childhood. It tasted skillet fried with flour. The broccoli and cheese was another hit. The broccoli was steamed perfectly, and the cheese sauce was awesome. Hands Down, Fork's Up the best food in Montgomery. If there was one spot, historic or social, that you could take people to in this town...this should be the one. Why? Not only is the food amazing, and the offerings (hot food, butchershop, gourmet wine & beer, frozen take home food) amazing...but it's a microcosm of all that's right with Mayberry...err I mean Montgomery :) The food has everything from the slap-your-momma good smothered pork chops (not that I would) to the healthy yet tasty veggie wrap (prepared by the chef on the grill sans butter if you ask)...and everything in between. Speaking of the chef, he's been known to walk out and have great conversations about food and do taste tests of possible new offerings. The staff is courteous and attentive - tables and plates get bussed very quickly and they'll take you at the side counter if that speeds things up ;) If you're in a hurry, ask for a BBQ sandwich or sandwich of the day to bypass the line. You won't be sacrificing...they're great too. Regarding atmosphere, you're just as likely to sit down next to a judge or state senator as you would a bohemian artist, military family, or mom with adorable kids. The chicken was delicious and had a great breading and the sides were also very tasty, not super loaded with sugar like they can be at some southern places. Overall very good but I will say I would have liked an option for dark meat. They only had these fried boneless breast pieces which weren't bad, I just love dark meat. I would have liked the temp of my food to be a bit hotter as well, kinda was lukewarm even when I first sat down. They have a great range of options for sides and sandwiches and other dishes like fried fish that looked really delicious so if you go I'm sure you will have no problem finding something you like. Dirk's Filet and Vine is a wonderful little spot for lunch. It's located in the Old Cloverdale district, and is easy to get to from most places downtown. The menu is basically the same everyday for lunch - you have several choices of meat, and a large array of vegetables and sides. Prices are reasonable, and a meat and two plate will run you about $7~$8 with drink. The quality of the food is excellent. The location is very clean, and inviting. The staff has always been friendly in my dealings. The only downsides are the limited parking, and the amount of seating. It is very difficult to get in at the peak of the lunch rush. If you manage to, though, it's a wonderful little destination. They also offer wines, steaks, and a small grocery at the location, but I have not sampled any of their other wares. read more

So happy to find this fantastic little spot! Extensive wine selection, best beer selection I've seen in the Montgomery area, little grocer area, and then a hot food section. They have different specials every day and several sandwiches that are served every day. You tell them at the counter what you want and give them your name, you then walk down to the cashier and pay. Take a seat and they will say your name when your food is ready. I had the Dante BBQ Sandwich with a side of sweet potato casserole - amazing! With a fountain soda, the price came in just under $10 and it was amazing. They also have breakfast on Saturday mornings until 10 AM. Highly recommend! read more

The good: Simply by standing in line, I found that people from all walks of life come here, and they all were excited to be here. The lunch selection, in spite of being cafeteria-style, was flavorful and diverse. The staff was helpful, friendly, and generous. They also worked in harmony; I could tell that crew was firing on all pistons for their customers. There was a wide selection of meats and cheeses you could also purchase and take home. The liquor store selection was wide and intriguing, prompting me to add to the list of "Beers to drink before I die." The bad: Strange layout of floor space. It's like the liquor store had empty space, so they filled that with tables and called it the restaurant. Depending where you sit, a lot of traffic can be walking and standing by your table.
