They have friendly, helpful employees who answered all our questions and helped us get the fish we wanted. They have a nice selection on dog food and treats so we picked up some things for the pups as well. While husband was taking care of somethings I did explore and look at their reptiles and spiders. Blech! They were interesting and neat but....blech! The snakes were actually rather cute yet at the same time....blech! At the time, they didn't have any birds. They were cleaning and reorganizing but they normally have them. They also get bunnies. I almost took one home but I fear one of my dogs would be obnoxious about it and there is no need to stress a poor little bunny. The store was clean, employees helpful and knowledgeable, and they seemed to have plenty of variety of critters and products. The fish we purchased were all healthy and are thriving. Remarkably clean with no weird, confronting odor that one is usually hit with at tiny, independent pet shops. Friendly, helpful staff, ready and able to answer questions and assist with selections. My daughters and I stopped in for aquatic plants and a few fishes to enhance our garden pond. Of course my girls needed to say hello to all the animals and we couldn't believe how clean every aquarium was - same goes for bird and reptile enclosures. The water hyacinths were on a good sale: 4/$16. I'm very pleased with my purchase. read more

Staff is always friendly and inviting! I also requested a specific food for my dog and they order me a bag every two weeks and ask if I need to other stuff I normally get. I like being a regular when I can always count on them to have what I need every time I'm there. People return or drop off animals sometimes and they do the best they can to accommodate them while they attempt to resell. Great staff! Always supportive and helpful. They were very accommodating when my Maltipoo was being picky about his food. We noticed he had an allergic reaction to some chicken products. They helped find a food that did not cause my dog excessive scratching and he would eat. read more

Ok, so I know and respect that Fin and Feather has, or had,, a pretty good reputation. This review is purely based on my own individual experience from two recent visits, one in late November, and the other on the afternoon of Saturday 1/2/21. After researching and considering buying a bird for some time, I went here in November and not one person spoke to me. Not even a hello. And I stood and looked in their bird room, and they only had a very few birds. The cages didn't look clean and the store didn't smell too good. After careful thought, I ended up buying 2 birds elsewhere on 12/1. Fast-forward about a month later, I went back to look for some natural wood perches and other bird toys and accessories. Again, not 1 hello. I actually was intending to purchase a small cage for transporting to the vet when the time comes, and a few shredding toys, and I said to myself, the heck with this. I was back towards the back of the store where they have shelves of bark and wood but no prices that I could find. At least 2 employees were back and forth, I just felt ignored or invisible. So, I left without buying anything. I really want to support local as much as possible, and I did buy my birds local, but I also have to consider that I can purchase items online at less health risk to me, with clear pricing and item descriptions. It feels great to support local, but it doesn't feel good to feel ignored in a store. read more

The name is super accurate. I was driving through town and needed some treats for my dog (who was being a superhero driving companion on a 3-day drive) and this place came up on a Google search. At first I was surprised at how small the dog and cat aisles were, but then I remembered the name. It's definitely more focused on the swimmies and flying friends than the four-legged variety. I used to shop at Fin and Feather about 15 years ago but I got tired of the outrageous prices and customer service that was marginal at best. So recently I was looking for a specific aquarium snail called a Hercules snail. I was told about them but never saw one before so I called Fin & Feather. The guy that answered said they had some. So I drove to the store and the guy I spoke to showed them to me. I bought two of them. When I showed the snails to someone they said "Those are not Hercules snails. They're Himalayan Snails." I was kind of mad but I figured I wouldn't make a stink about it with Fin & Feather. So I went again today to look at some fish. The fish in one of the tanks were unhealthy. A couple fish were floating on their sides. I then looked at a product that was not priced (which is a big pet peeve of mine) I asked a girl to check the price and it was ridiculously priced and I mean 3 times what the same item is at other places. I probably won't be going back again as this place is no better than I remember it being. read more

We have a few fish tanks. The staff know their stuff. They helped use make the right mix to have a very active tank. We went to a couple other pet stores and didn't get the knowledge nor the value we received at Fin & Feather. We haven't brought the Grand Kids yet so we a warning you now. We live almost 45 minutes away and it is worth the trip to patron this store. We would like to add everytime we have been in the store no matter how busy the staff is helpful,friendly and take time to make you experience enjoyable. Thank You David and Staff. read more

My husband and I went to both the Watergarden and Pond shop and Fin & Feather. The woman working at the pond center was AWESOME! She walked us around the outdoor area and explained every plant they had and what it was good for and how it would grow. She fed the koi with us and was just so nice. You can really tell when people love their jobs. We will definitely be back when we decide to go a little bigger than our micro pond! read more

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE ‼ I visited recently for the first time in hopes of supporting a local pet shop, however this place needs to be shut down. The conditions were literally heartbreaking. Rabbits and birds looked on the brink on death, reptile enclosures were tiny and filthy. Almost all enclosures had dirty/no water or food, and there were flies everywhere. If you don't have the space or the staff to take appropriate care of animals, you have no business having them. Please adopt these animals out to people who have the knowledge and resources to give them a good life and just stop. read more

Went here to pick up our dog food because as we just moved here, my dogs are my babies and they are of course the most important! The worker helped us sign up for all of the reward programs which was great! This place seems super cool! They have a bird room, a reptile room and a bird room! Stopped in to buy some Fromm food for our fur babies and got a quick look around at all the selection of pet toys and even pets themselves, from our rodent friends, to fish and reptiles. Wish I could leave a 0. Walked in, associate looked right at me and didn't say a word. Simple hello would have gone a long way. Dead fish in several tanks. And not newly dead, dead for some time. Would benefit from doing a morning death walk to check status of fish. Felt awful for some fish and conditions they were being kept in. Especially a large red tail/shove nose 3ft long in a 3ft long tank, WITH a large bicher. Couldn't turn around if it wanted to. Absolutely awful. All fish looked underfed, unhappy, and borderline sickly. As a seasoned hobbyist I'd never buy a thing from these folks. I wish I had never walked in. Also the store smelled disgusting. Felt bad for employees who have to breathe the air. Worst part is I've been to this store before covid and it was equally terrible. Do better. ALSO had MASSIVE reticulated pythons in an UNLOCKED enclosure closed with a wooden shim and sign that said not to open. Just criminally neglectful and dangerous. Shut this place down. read more

We purchased my son's snake at Fin & Feather. Before doing so, we visited the store weekly for several months. My son wanted to learn about all of the snakes and pick out the perfect one. The staff is so patient with us. They taught him about dozens of species of snakes, talked him through the pros and cons of each type, and ultimately helped us select the perfect companion. We still visit weekly to buy food for our bearded dragon, Central American boa, and dogs. Everyone always welcomes us. If you are want to buy from animal enthusiasts, this is your store. read more

Hey guys....this pet store smells like.... a pet store. Crazy right? I just went here today for the first time. I have recently become addicted to fish(I only have 1 Betta) so now I'm exploring my local stores. I was only familiar with the classic Walmart/Petco/Petsmart fish set up prior to the visit. This place blew me away. Huge variety of fresh water fish and they all look well taken care of. I will defiantly come back here when I start a community tank. the conditions most of the enclosures & animals were in was disheartening & disgusting. the last time i visited it wasn't nearly this bad. the workers stood around a lot & conversed with eachother. included photos are; a pied ball python who was very skinny & covered in feces. there was a banana ball python in the same enclosure behind the background also super skinny, there was a tokay gecko who was super skinny, & many of the animals including this rat snake didn't have water in their water dishes. do not recommend this location. read more

I've been going to the aquatic portion of the store for almost 10 years and the staff have always been knowledgeable and helpful. It's a tiny but mighty store they have EVERYTHING! We live in North Carolina but my husband was up here for training so we came to see him and we found this place on maps and thought why not! Let me express that we have 3 kids, aged 8, 2, and 9m... not once did we get side eyed by employees because of our children being excited and a little loud because duh animals! Which was pretty great because y'all would be surprised at how often that happens. Some things are not priced but no big deal just pick it up and go ask or go ask someone, I only saw like 3 employees in there so I'm sure they have a hard time keeping up with all the pets. Even then, the ones we saw were all active, filled up and had water available. We will return to this store soon better than any around where we live. read more

So I stopped here on my way home, I don't typically go though Richmond, VA (and normally go around it) but there was a crash on the road and figured to go this way. We were looking to get more fish for our new huge tank we just built. It seemed to have good reviews for fish at first hand so we went inside. The place is nice, I will give it that, it was big and looked clean. However, one thing we noticed is that there was no staff around. It was around 4pm but nobody was around. We found two people in the back that appeared to be working there, when they saw us they came to the front and just waited at the counter. OK, well anyway, we wanted to at least look at the fish before we needed as we typically like to see what they have. As we looked, there was something strange in the fish tank that we weren't sure until we took a closer look. There were dead fish in almost all of the tanks. Typically I do think there might be 1 or 2 dead fish in a tank that might have just died and just haven't been found by the staff, but all of the tanks had dead fish in them, some of them were being eaten and had their bones showing. I talked to the people at the counter and said they would "look into it". That gave me a scare and we just let. I don't think I'll come back here any more. If they were not paying attention to the fish in the tank, imagine what else they may not be paying attention too. read more

We Bought 5 Shubunkin goldfish on 4/11/22 and did not realize we got charged for another we did not receive as well as one dying the first night in my well conditioned pond. We sent a contact message to this effect for a refund check for the 2 fish to be mailed to our address but so far have heard nothing back. Hopefully management will respond shortly especially since the fish were not cheap $10 each. We live out in Powhatan so it is not feasible to drive all the way back to the store. Sent a second notice using their online communication. UPDATE: 4/20/22 No response whatsoever. Would not recommend coming here rather go to Petco or PetSmart a better choice and for pond stuff online amazon cheaper prices for the same products plus returns accepted for the most part. I got my cockatiel from here and my experience was great! Emma was so personable and was super helpful with teaching me about cockatiels. She helped my pick out everything I needed and allowed me to visit my bird everyday. The transition to home was amazing because I was able to visit her so much. Emma has also been very helpful after I took my bird home with answering any questions that I have. Emma definitely knows her stuff and is the go to for birds! read more

The company sold me two pregnant Guinea pigs much to my surprise. When I spoke to the someone on the leadership team of the pet store about bring the babies back at the appropriate time of age they agreed but when it came time the leadership team dodged my phone call repeatedly and then I was told by stuff they didn't have room for them . After several attempts to communicate I finally got someone on the phone who told me to bring them by . They offered no help in food or care after a stuff member told me they would . The lead ship team wouldn't even come talk to me when I came to drop the first batch of babies after asking to speak with him . The communication is poor and unacceptable behavior. read more

I feel ripped off. Bought two fish last night. $12 each. One super tiny. People at the store tell you nothing (this is the second time I've been in there to get fish) about how to prep your tank or get started. My fish died within a few minutes of being home. I bought the chemical that corrects the PH. I followed the instructions on the bottle when filling the tank. Fish died soon enough. Today, I went to ask for an exchange. They said I needed to bring in the dead fish and the tank to test the water. Seriously? I had already gotten rid of the fish. I won't being going back here. read more

My boyfriend and I visited today, and were not impressed with the conditions that the animals were living in. We checked out the small rodents room (we own 3 rats) and were very uncomfortable with what we saw. Most of the tanks were empty (rodents shouldn't be kept in glass tanks anyway, there's not enough air flow and the ammonia from their urine can be toxic) and the ones that were there were packed full of mice for such a small tank. The water bottles in the tanks were coated with algae on the inside, and the tanks themselves were grimy and dirty. There was a sweet momma rat with her babies and it broke our hearts to see her like that. I'm not usually the type of person to leave a bad review for a small business, but when it comes to the well-being of animals that depend on you for care it's unacceptable and shameful. read more

After reading some of the reviews I wasn't sure we should go to Fin & Feather but due to it being close to our house we decided to try it. I'm glad we did! It does smell like a pet store but as another reviewer said, . . . it is a pet store. The people at the front counter said hi as we walked in but allowed us to look around without coming up and asking if we needed anything, which I like. When we did have questions about setting up our first fish tank we asked a man working in the fish area. He was very nice and took extra time to explain how to prepare the water so the fish would be as healthy as possible. He even gave us a demonstration on how to change the water using a tube and demonstrated how to clean the pebbles. He was very patient when we asked numerous questions and even responded kindly when my children provided him unsolicited information about topics that were unrelated to taking care of a fish. Our experience at Fin & Feather was MUCH better than our recent trip to Petsmart were the majority of the staff were unable to answer our basic questions. read more
