The owners, Anna and Viktor are simply the kindest people I have ever met. When speaking with them and interacting with them, you can see how much they love what they do and how much they care for each patient. They treat thems as if they were family. I would recommend Running Creek Assisted Living to anyone looking to place a loved one into an assisted living facility, they have great care options to accommodate every need.

Highgate is a smaller facility that is much more intimate. They have a bulletin board with about a dozen pictures of staff that have been there for at least 10 years. When we ate a meal in their dining room I noticed (1) their tables are widely spaced for walkers and (2) some of the administrative staff actually serve the tables. They are all very intimate with the residents. The food is great by the way. We were fortunate to tour just as they had an opening in assisted living. However, after 10 days they called us in for a conference. There had been an incident and they recognized that he was in an early stage of dementia. We were afraid they might say he "wasn't a good fit" for the place. We said that in the meeting and all three staffers immediately reacted for us to be assured, that this is what they are equipped to handle. They have people who are trained in dealing with dementia and have a program for helping keep the minds active which can otherwise lead to pent up frustration. We realize we were too close to see the subtle changes but when they explained how all the little signs added up, it really explained a lot. When something like this hits a family member you are in denial, you don't see it happening. We didn't. They started him in the program and shortly had an opening in memory care where they get the same great food. These people really care and evaluated his behavior. Another place just told us that he was "misbehaving". Highgate is much much better. We're very glad to have found them.

It's evident the moment you walk in, and it's bright and welcoming. Where else can a medicaid recipient have their own studio apartment, not shared with anyone? I know of no other assisted living facility who offers that. It's one of the benefits of being mission driven and not for profit. Care and humanity can remain at the forefront rather than profit.

When you do finally speak with an employee they basically say it's the resident (family member) causing any or all issues that may arise. There is ZERO accountability on the facilities end. The finger is pointed at the resident for many different reasons, some may be concerning but then again, those go without being addressed as well. Favoritism runs high. Be careful your mother or father may be the nurse or the activities directors favorite today but tomorrow the communication may suddenly be cut off , leaving your loved one to wonder what they did wrong. Emails, phone calls, text messages go days sometimes weeks unanswered. In my case not at all from the resident services director when we were in the process of moving my mother. December 17th I left a message. To this day I have not received a return phone call. How is that acceptable. Don't bother calling the CEO. His assistant is his assistant. My phone call was not taken seriously and the return message was as if nothing had been talked about. So disappointing. They will defend whatever they see fit when it comes to staff. To me, anything that concerns me about my mother, I should be able to get a prompt answer and in my opinion the place that is in charge of her daily care, should show a little more compassion and empathy and urgency to have addressed those concerns.. You will not get that here. All of this comes from the top and is a domino effect as to how things are run. They follow their lead and it's obvious that the concern is just not there. Like I mentioned, Unless your loved one is favored and or well liked. Otherwise the care is subpar. If your loved one is difficult like mine, expect the blame for any issues to be shifted in that direction. Assumption does not and will not take responsibility for any mistakes or mishaps that may occur on their end. This is everywhere at Assumption. Somehow my 86 years old mother was able to hide and hoard medications. 2 bottles full of pills. I believe that shows serious lack of care and is potentially very dangerous. The corporate office ignored this subject as if I had made it up. NO follow up, no follow through on this subject at all. Ignored completely. Reception is rude, The website still has the mothers day greeting from 2020, why??? There are no activities going on. Communication is lacking greatly and we moved my mom out in December and were left with a very bad taste in our mouths. I could go on and on but I think you get the gist. I would not recommend Assumption village to anyone looking for a new home and needing to be cared for by someone else. Please take the time to do your research before signing a contract here. Moving a loved one into a facility is a very big decision that should not betaken lightly and needs to be researched, If you are looking for somewhere they will be treated well and you as a family member will feel in the loop as to what is going on, this is not the place for your mother or father. I drove into Vancouver and pulled off onto Main St. I pulled into the community and couldn't find any visitor parking, so I went ahead and parked in resident parking. With hundreds of parking spots, I felt fine doing so and picked the spot furthest away. I waited near a bench next to the garden/front lawn area and waited. There is a lot of hussle and bussle here at Knights of Pythias! There's a smoking area in the back area and there were a few guys on their mobility devices out talking in the sunshine day. I saw older men and woman and middle aged men and woman. Some had pets, some did not. Some needed help getting inside, most did not. :) I realized I needed to go in and actually meet my new online buddy at their 'residence' or actual room number. I went to the front desk, told the super friendly, Mr Smiles guy what was going on and he said, "Cool! Head upstairs to the left." I asked if it was safe, he chuckled and nodded. I told him my name and what kind of car I have and went upstairs. I'll try not to turn this into my NaMo story, but man oh man. I was nervous, ya'll. NERVOUS! I don't meet at people's home, let alone their front door. It's always a public spot. But. This is different for me. I had my pepper spray ready and rang the door bell.... HA! Totally not what I expected! I met with a middle aged woman who did NOT look like she would live in 'retirement community' but I saw lots of people coming and going that didn't fit the norm. She had a beet ready for us to juice and I gave her the instructions and she gave me some cash! We ended our transaction with a glass of beet juice! Now, back to the establishment itself. It's an older building for sure. The stairwells are scuffed and cold. The halls kept but absolutely dated. The fragrance wasn't bad, in any foul way, but was heavy with cleaners and just that "old building" kinda feel. The sitting area or 'living room' near the front lobby is VERY BIG. Many residents sat watching t.v, chatting, reading, etc and I did not have any negative feelings watching everyone enjoying themselves and relaxing. The furniture is extremely vintage (it's old ya'll. OLD) and patterns you'd see at antique or consignment shops. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Everything was so nice, but goodness gracious, this place needs some updating! Some new paint and modern touches. I don't think it would take a lot to really give this place a little extra 'umpf'! This part of town is getting some major upgrades and I'd love to see the Knights going with that as well. Id find it hard to believe this organization doesn't have skilled handymen and woman! available at a moments notice! I've passed this place tons of times and wasn't impressed, never realizing it was many people's HOMES! Powerwashing brick, new updated colors in paint, upgrade some furniture ... I'd give the place 5 stars and recommend for my own family come here. Currently, however, I was left a little depressed as I drove away thinking about how I am taking this task on now as my mom looks for active retirement communities herself ... Just because she's older, doesn't mean where she lives should look, feel or smell like it. I loved how friendly everyone was, including the residents and I would recommend anyone in need to check the Knights out, should that fall within your viewpoint of things. I'd give a 4 star, Yay! I'm a fan rating, however, didn't feel it was honest since this review is from my one visit there and not as a resident or daily visitor. this was one of the last places i lived at before i was able to move on into my first apartment…read morecomplex at oak knoll apartments that i really did not like living at. it was to much like living in a prison with a magnetic lock on the front door into the front living room area leading to an elevator you had to take to get to the floor my apartment was on... or should i say my cell was on!!!! the knights of pythias retirement center was really a nice place to live and if i needed to move back i wouldn't mind at all.

People are now constantly scavenging the trash cans all around the area in broad daylight, I was asked for my lunch today while trying to enjoy it in the park, so I just gave it up rather than a potential issue. Also they are now leaving actual shit n piss at the back door, so thats cool. Safety / security Felt rly safe when I moved here but has gotten a lot less since. Recently I've been followed an harassed outside by people who appear to be living in the park bushes & train tracks. I try to mind my own business but it's gotten to a point I don't feel safe. The area is mostly well-lit, but I avoid walking around after dark. During day on sev occasions, I've witnessed people breaking the lights in the park so it'll be darker at nite. There's also an uptick in hazardous trash left around. Pretty much every day, all garbage cans in the park are broken into w/shit strewn around. The overall degradation has brought down the value of living on the waterfront IMO. Last week someone tried to break into my unit. I was about to call 911 when they finally stopped n left like nothing happened. People who don't live here try to get in the building & as a resident, you're expected to make sure no non-residents get in since it's secure... but um, I'm not a security guard or door guy, don't kno how to deal with that. Last week a woman having some sort of episode on the sidewalk screamed at me as I went inside that she was going to burn the building down. Really hope she wasn't the same person trying to get into my unit! So despite being a "secure" building, it's pretty easy for people to get in-- esp since the garage doors often get stuck open and are left that way overnight for days "waiting for parts." Residents are given notice about the doors being broken and stuck open so your vehicle might as well be parked on the street, but of course that $150 garage parking fee (on top of the exorbitant rent and additional charges for the building's communal spaces) sure doesn't get discounted. Theres a tent encampment started up a few yards away on the railroad tracks, a few feet from the garage door, it's even part of my cityscape view now. It's getting colder, wetter. No one could blame them for seeking shelter in the open garage 10 feet from their tent. Amenities The gym is nice but ground level & open view from the street. Unfortunately sometimes sketchy dudes stop n stare, even make gestures, at women working out. Seen it multiple times now, even stopped workin out in there because of it. There's a pool table. I've used it, but only one pool stick was still useable, so that kinda sux. Noise + cleanliness I can't speak for all areas, but the area around me is extremely loud w lots of knocking, running, bangs, booms, techno music can all be heard often above my unit and in hallways. I don't understand how it can be so loud sometimes other than that the walls an ceilings are just super thin. I had a friend visit this week who said it sounds like I live under a bowling alley. So just know, it prob won't be quiet. The staff are all very friendly. The cleaning crew is especially nice. However, they are sometimes on speakerphone having conversations while in the hallways, which makes it v loud every time they clean, makes people's dogs bark. One gets goin, another gets goin, etc. can't blame them, I'd bark too. It's not really peace n quiet here. Despite some areas being cleaned all the time, the stairs are all disgustingly dirty. The lobby area gets cleaned every single day, but elsewhere, not so much. I've watched as the same nasty bobby pin & clumps of hair have been on the stairs for months, clearly not cleaned by anyone. Maybe that's for residents to do too.. not opposed, but can we at least get discount or credit for our services? There's also mold problem. To be such a new building but have water leaking w mold growing ... in the communal spaces we have to pay addl charges for... & no action to fix it... makes me question the rent price, again. Other obs I knew this would b dog-friendly building & neighborhood, which I love. But it does feel as if the dog owners n dogs are a little on top of each other. Rly can't turn around without running into a dog. Not a bad thing, it just doesnt feel like enough space for amount, esp if u have a dog w any sort of behavior or distraction issue. It would be rly hard to deal w that here. It would also b hard to live here if u have allergy o sensitive to dog hair or dander. The stairs are COVERED w dog hair. So ... It used to be nice but I cant justify the high rent anymore, but i am moving soon anyways. Wouldn't recommend at current rent unless things change drastically.

But having Marisol conduct the tour for us, being very honest and genuine about everything just made me feel super comfortable to live here. She was so patient and so quick to answer all the questions I had and she even sent me a very detailed in depth email on what is to be expected. I don't think I've ever signed on an apartment so quick before! She even went out of her way to show us everything a second time and gave us great recommendations about the area. They always seem to be short staffed, thus the quality of resident care suffers. Communication is very poor. There is no 2-way communication between resident's and staff. If you fall hopefully, you are by one of 2 buttons to call for assistance, then you wait. Communication system is archaic at best. The food is not good. Serving times are late. Sit down for a meal, the serving time comes and you wait and wait, sometimes 20-30 minutes or longer before the food is served. Usually, staff is in there bs'ing and getting their meals, or eating in the kitchen. While staff is in there, hygiene requirements are not met. They seem to continually have bookkeeping issues.
