I drove into Vancouver and pulled off onto Main St. I pulled into the community and couldn't find any visitor parking, so I went ahead and parked in resident parking. With hundreds of parking spots, I felt fine doing so and picked the spot furthest away. I waited near a bench next to the garden/front lawn area and waited. There is a lot of hussle and bussle here at Knights of Pythias! There's a smoking area in the back area and there were a few guys on their mobility devices out talking in the sunshine day. I saw older men and woman and middle aged men and woman. Some had pets, some did not. Some needed help getting inside, most did not. :) I realized I needed to go in and actually meet my new online buddy at their 'residence' or actual room number. I went to the front desk, told the super friendly, Mr Smiles guy what was going on and he said, "Cool! Head upstairs to the left." I asked if it was safe, he chuckled and nodded. I told him my name and what kind of car I have and went upstairs. I'll try not to turn this into my NaMo story, but man oh man. I was nervous, ya'll. NERVOUS! I don't meet at people's home, let alone their front door. It's always a public spot. But. This is different for me. I had my pepper spray ready and rang the door bell.... HA! Totally not what I expected! I met with a middle aged woman who did NOT look like she would live in 'retirement community' but I saw lots of people coming and going that didn't fit the norm. She had a beet ready for us to juice and I gave her the instructions and she gave me some cash! We ended our transaction with a glass of beet juice! Now, back to the establishment itself. It's an older building for sure. The stairwells are scuffed and cold. The halls kept but absolutely dated. The fragrance wasn't bad, in any foul way, but was heavy with cleaners and just that "old building" kinda feel. The sitting area or 'living room' near the front lobby is VERY BIG. Many residents sat watching t.v, chatting, reading, etc and I did not have any negative feelings watching everyone enjoying themselves and relaxing. The furniture is extremely vintage (it's old ya'll. OLD) and patterns you'd see at antique or consignment shops. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Everything was so nice, but goodness gracious, this place needs some updating! Some new paint and modern touches. I don't think it would take a lot to really give this place a little extra 'umpf'! This part of town is getting some major upgrades and I'd love to see the Knights going with that as well. Id find it hard to believe this organization doesn't have skilled handymen and woman! available at a moments notice! I've passed this place tons of times and wasn't impressed, never realizing it was many people's HOMES! Powerwashing brick, new updated colors in paint, upgrade some furniture ... I'd give the place 5 stars and recommend for my own family come here. Currently, however, I was left a little depressed as I drove away thinking about how I am taking this task on now as my mom looks for active retirement communities herself ... Just because she's older, doesn't mean where she lives should look, feel or smell like it. I loved how friendly everyone was, including the residents and I would recommend anyone in need to check the Knights out, should that fall within your viewpoint of things. I'd give a 4 star, Yay! I'm a fan rating, however, didn't feel it was honest since this review is from my one visit there and not as a resident or daily visitor. However, I have added this location as volunteer options, so should I feel the need to update, I will. Thanks!

this was one of the last places i lived at before i was able to move on into my first apartment…read morecomplex at oak knoll apartments that i really did not like living at. it was to much like living in a prison with a magnetic lock on the front door into the front living room area leading to an elevator you had to take to get to the floor my apartment was on... or should i say my cell was on!!!! the knights of pythias retirement center was really a nice place to live and if i needed to move back i wouldn't mind at all.

Highgate is a smaller facility that is much more intimate. They have a bulletin board with about a dozen pictures of staff that have been there for at least 10 years. When we ate a meal in their dining room I noticed (1) their tables are widely spaced for walkers and (2) some of the administrative staff actually serve the tables. They are all very intimate with the residents. The food is great by the way. We were fortunate to tour just as they had an opening in assisted living. However, after 10 days they called us in for a conference. There had been an incident and they recognized that he was in an early stage of dementia. We were afraid they might say he "wasn't a good fit" for the place. We said that in the meeting and all three staffers immediately reacted for us to be assured, that this is what they are equipped to handle. They have people who are trained in dealing with dementia and have a program for helping keep the minds active which can otherwise lead to pent up frustration. We realize we were too close to see the subtle changes but when they explained how all the little signs added up, it really explained a lot. When something like this hits a family member you are in denial, you don't see it happening. We didn't. They started him in the program and shortly had an opening in memory care where they get the same great food. These people really care and evaluated his behavior. Another place just told us that he was "misbehaving". Highgate is much much better. We're very glad to have found them.

Salmon creek was disappointing. The staff that interacted with my family member were caring, and…read morethey appeared to like their job, however it was very obvious they are short staffed/over worked! Lots of turnover in staff, which happens. A couple nights when I was there, they only had one tech working for the entire memory care side (I believe 24 residents) so I stayed until midnight to make sure my family member was settled and sleeping. Staff didn't appear to know what my family member could do/couldn't do. Ie, not ambulatory, but wanted to het her in the shower. They should get rid of the carpet because it stinks horribly! About 5 steps into the memory care area, the smell of urine hits you in the face! The carpet in the individual room was stained and gross. We didn't feel comfortable leaving our family member alone due to her confusion and the lack of staff. We needed to be there for 8+ hours daily-and often as late as 10 pm to advocate for her. We were told someone would check on her every 45-min. the first couple days to make sure she was adjusting but instead it was every 3-4 hours. Thankfully a family member was there. (And no, they didn't not check on her b/c family was there, they need to go into the room to know if someone is visiting, nor were they told family would be there all day) Family had to ask for her food tray more than once. Unfortunately she was only in memory care for a couple weeks before passing. We would have moved her out if Hospice wasn't needed and end of life was that soon. Proceed with caution if you are considering placing a loved one there.

Today, made it exceptionally impressive for the following reasons: 1. My two tables professionally covered in black, waiting for me, 3 lights already on. To me, that's a very nice WELCOMING Customer Service, for a visiting vendor. 2. I called yesterday, if I should bring lunch, or if I could purchase. I was told: since I"m working here, I just need to get a ticket from the Desk. 3. My meal was delivered, and I could have taken advantage, by picking everything I wanted from the menu, but I only picked Grilled Chicken Salad. More than I could eat. Boxed leftover to eat another day. 4. Even though a couple customers wasted 30 mins. of my time, (after all that, they told me 'they didn't have money', I was not kicked out of the door. I remained until they were gone, and Marti was understanding. 5. Happy Hour, live music, was a bonus! This was Wednesday. I don't know what it's like on days I wasn't here. Many residents attended the Happy Hour with some of their guests.

Vancouver Pointe (VP) had turnover of 3 Executive Directors in approximately the last 6-8 months…read more Though 3 full meals a day is a part of everyone's resident agreement, VP claims to have to get approval from corporate off site to repair or replace the juice machine and even to reorder food. That's the reason VP gives when they run out of so many menu items. We went close to 2 weeks without any juice at all for every resident here unless they bought their own. VP took around 2 or more years to hire someone to run the kitchen. The maintenance head comes in to my unit with his master key after I denied his request to come in,, beats on my door like police executing a search warrant, screams at me and demands I pay for service I wasn't legally obligated to pay. Don't put loved ones here unless they stop mistreating and abusing people who simply refuse to pay bills that are VP's under the resident agreement. Most of the staff are kind to me, but the management is either incompetent or unable to withstand the demands of corporate to slash costs regardless of how much it hurts residents. When an issue has been resolved with an Executive Director who leaves, the next director starts doing the same thing that was already resolved. Given the turnover, this comes up a lot. I've lived here approximately 10 years, never missed a payment or made a late payment, and never expected to be so miserable living here.

I have been very impressed with the VA Portland Health Care System. I have been receiving good care…read morefrom my PCP for years. Last year I became deathly ill while traveling in Mexico and found a doctor who spoke some English and put me on IV fluids for days and then antibiotics 24x7 with 24 hours a day of nursing care. My health kept getting worse. I couldn't stand up or take a step. I couldn't even swing my swollen legs out of bed. My lungs filled up with fluids and I couldn't catch my breath or think straight. I felt that I was very close to death. When my condition worsened I was put in a gated, locked senior living center for rehabilitation but there was no rehab available and the other patients were placed there for care and feeding until death. At some point I was told that my vital signs had crashed and I was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital where I spent several days in the ICU getting tested and being given 2 units of blood and 2 units of plasma while running up a $10,000 bill. I became afraid that I would die in Mexico because the doctor didn't seem to know what to do to help me recover and our communication was difficult because of the language barrier. With my local friends I staged an emergency escape from the locked senior "rehab facility and flew to Portland and went directly to the VA Hospital ER. I was admitted to the hospital and put on new meds. I spent weeks in the hospital and within a few days I could sense that my condition was improving. After weeks in the hospital I was sent to the VA rehab center in Vancouver, Washington where I stayed for another month learning how to walk again. Then I moved to a Senior Independent Living Center for several more months before I was finally able to move into my own home, able to live alone and care for myself. Everyone I met in the Portland VA system welcomed me and treated me like a welcome guest. The care, kindness and compassion were wonderful. They saved my life and thanked me for the privilege. I couldn't be more grateful. (Aside from the quality of the food) I feel that I got great quality life saving care from the staff and the entire system.

I was having real issues with pain and mobility...but I was treated like some addict when I spoke of the pain I was having. And, not by one, but by two (2) VA medical professionals! They told me that they did not believe me...in essence, I am a liar. Medical professionals...those who are supposed to have you in mind. So...I found out today that the problem I am experiencing is that the prosethetic post is freaking moving and that is what is causing the pain. So, the VA and its "Marque de Sade" approach to Primary Care Medicine sucks...they called me a liar and it becomes obvious these Medicos are suffering from severe "Cranial rectumitis." And we are supposed to think these people are heros? These people are there for a paycheck and do not care about you. And, when the goverment wanted you they drafted you...now the screw you. If I had it to do over again.......................................
