I've been a patient of Dr. Fingesten's since 2011. She is an amazing doctor whose ability to diagnose correctly, treat and manage patients' diseases and disorders is astonishing. I am being treated by a specialist for severe pulmonary hypertension and have reported to her that I am severely fatigued and sleeping 14 hours a day. The specialist chalked it up to the PH medication and said I'd get used to it, but this had been going on for five months. Dr. Fingesten found that my blood pressure was dangerously low from the PH medication and changed my medications. The next day I felt like a new person. Not just energized, but thinking clearly. As a former patient I left her practice when another medical dr found out through blood work that I was extremely anemic. When we checked my lab history it was red flag evident that Dr Fingesten missed it for over 18 months. I saw Dr Fingesten 2 or more times a year and my blood work was drawn each time. Dr. Fingesten has been my primary care for 6yrs and I wish I had found her sooner. She figured out and diagnosed many of my issues quickly, no primary care I've met cares about all issues let alone me as a person. Any other primary care I've met just want to take blood and see you when you're sick, Dr Fingesten pays more attention to detail than that and never brushes off any issue to a recommendation. If she cannot help you herself, her recommendations are all top notch through NYU Langone. While she has many patients, its obvious why, she is incredibly sharp and always hears you out. Nowadays, it's so hard to find a great doctor that cares about their patients, Dr Fingesten does. While wait times can be long, it's worth it to see a doctor who doesn't want you in and out just to keep their own schedule. Also, I cannot forget to mention reception. I am sure that Dr. Fingesten is a wonderful provider, but as a new patient, I do not believe it is correct to wait TWO hours without being taken back. I arrived 15 minutes before my schedule appointment to complete NP paperwork and decided to leave after waiting two hours since I believe it shows a lack of respect for the patients and their time. As a medical provider myself, I understand that sometimes there are scheduling conflicts or times when you are running behind schedule, but there should be better communication between the provider, scheduling, and patients. read more

While yes the wait can be long, she has been very good to me as a patient and has saved my life several times solving health problems that other doctors could not. I know now to call and check in to see how behind she is and so now I never really wait. She answers all questions no matter what they are and will never rush you out. I gave this doctor a shot as I was looking for new primary care and my gynecologist recommended her to me by saying she was a big fan. Dr. Fingesten was very scattered, she was flustered because her computer was not working and she asked me how old I was 4 times in the 20 minutes (at most) that I spent with her! In addition, she interrupted my consultation to say goodbye, kiss and chat with the previous patient as the patient was leaving. I found this to be rude of her given that she was barely listening to what I was saying as I explained my medical history to her. When I told her my father had died of an aneurysm, she was sympathetic but she quickly said I had nothing to worry about, that I would not get one. She is no neurologist and I found this to be extremely misleading as I myself have seen neurologists for another issue I was diagnosed with and her comment was inaccurate. She took blood samples and said she would call me with the results. I had to call her office to get the results from her secretary. She never called me or tell me that some of the results should be of concern to me. Her secretary was helpful but she was condescending as I asked her if she could fax me the results of the blood work. I will most certainly not go back to this doctor and would not recommend her to anyone else. read more

I have been going to Dr. Fingesten for a few years and I think she is a great doctor. She is a tell it like it is type of doctor, but that is why I like her. Yes, you sometimes have to wait long to see her, but what doctors office isn't like that? She does spend the necessary time with you and doesn't just shove you out the door at least. I love Dr. Fingesten. I've been seeing her about three years and I think she's a fantastic, no-nonsense physician. If I have questions or concerns she always take time to talk to me thoroughly and I feel well-cared for. She's been encouraging as I've improved my health and it's very easy to schedule appointments via ZocDoc. Most of the time, the wait is no longer than 10-15 minutes. But yes, sometimes the wait has been longer -- I think that's perfectly fine, because when I've needed it, she's spent plenty of time with me. If you expect a doctor to spend quality time with patients when needed, sometimes there will be a wait. That's just reality. And it's a tradeoff I'm willing to make for such a fine doctor. read more

Where to begin with this doctor... For my appointment I waited 2 hours to see her. Yes, 2 hours. An hour and a half in the waiting room and then another half hour in the exam room. Not good for someone who has white coat syndrome. When I finally saw her, I felt very rushed. And like Mel V., I found her dismissive. She just brushed the problems I had aside. The icing on the cake was the witch receptionist, Jamie. She is very unprofessional and was cursing and ranting to her friend who came to visit her at work. I didn't provide my SSN on the info form and she harassed me for a week with phone calls, threatening to sue me & such although not only is a SSN not needed but it's ILLEGAL for a doctor's office to persist for one. Never waited less than two hours for an appointment even when they were very early in the day. I even on one instance had the receptionist call me and tell me not to bother to come because she is so behind. Since then, I have had two follow up appointments where the waits were equally long, and I have received 4 bills for services that were not provided to me. Be careful if she goes on vacation because her office will be closed since she is the only doctor in her practice and going to an urgent care or walk-in can cost a pretty penny. She listened to my concerns, and gave me referrals to good specialists for things I needed to follow up on. She is a bit quirky in a NY way, and always busy, but I have not at all found her dismissive. Since my last review, I've made a request to Dr. Fingesten to waive the fee for my ear "procedure" since she made it worse and I had to see a specialist. She did waive the fee so I've upped the rating to 3 stars. She is a fair doctor but I stand by my earlier review that I don't feel she gives me the care I expect. It's not about being self-important because I've learned to deal with the long wait time (per Michelle's note) but maybe she just treats some patients better than others. Owing to several long-term health issues and many insurance coverage changes, I have had at least four primary care physicians and seen thrice as many specialists in the last 7 years. Only Dr. Fingesten has fully earned my loyalty and confidence. I started seeing her in 2008 in the midst of an untreated medical crisis. Not only did she take the time to absorb my entire medical history and find the appropriate specialist for me, she telephoned me from home two days later to make sure I was ok. My subsequent care and experiences have been no less satisfactory. She is receptive to my concerns and complaints, and has always been willing to work with me My sole complaint about Dr. Fingesten is that she identifies herself to me as Dr. Fingesten, but addresses me by my first name. Beyond that, I like her, and Jamie, the primary receptionist very much. My experiences with Dr. Fingesten's office are very much at odds with those of several commenters here. Some of this may be attributed to mere differences in expectation. For instance, I generally expect my doctors to run behind for several reasons. First, one late patient early in the day can cause a traffic jam that only gets worse with each subsequent late patient. Also, she may be squeezing in patients with urgent needs at understandable inconvenience to the rest of us. I try to avoid waits by scheduling early appointments or calling before I come to find out how far behind she is running. read more

I have been going to Dr. Fingesten for over 15 years. She is board certified in both internal medicine (meaning primary care) and geriatrics (meaning that as I get older she will still be my doctor). She is very knowledgeable and spends as much time as I need with her. The flip side of that, inevitably, is that you often have to wait to see her because they schedule too many people given the time she takes. Not Jamie's fault, and she is very competent, but that's what medical offices do -- overbook because they expect patients to not show up. I think it's a trade off, time with the doctor v. getting in to see the doctor immediately. I just call ahead and find out just how backed up she is, and I always take something to read or work to do. As some have mentioned, she is no nonsense, but she is also very caring, which one sees more clearly after you have had some real life experiences with her. She is extremely knowledgeable, especially about medications and interactions among them; this is not as common as it should be. She is also very thorough and makes sure I get all the preventive services I am supposed to. Her specialist referrals have with one exception (a greedy gynecologist who tried to steal me from her) been terrific. She is a bit of a troglodyte when it comes to IT, she has just avoided the computer piece until this year but now she has to do it and it will take a while before the bugs are out. It is also kind of quaint that she draws her own bloods (very well) and takes her own vitals; I guess a solo practice cannot afford a nurse; she had one once and she was awful and got fired. I wish there were a lot more physicians in New York like her. read more

This doctor is a joke. Not only is the wait time terrible and she acts dismissive but she takes blood for every simple issue. For example, I went in needing a z-pack for a sinus infection and she insisted on taking blood. This happened numerous times and finally I received a bill from my insurance for $500. I should have read some of the reviews before even attempting to see this doctor. One would hope that people in the medical profession would be professional and honest, but she is far from that. I went in to discuss one issue and ended up leaving with another. This other issue was NEVER even explained to me and I was told I needed all this bloodwork and also more tests at the hospital. During the appointment I kept asking what the problem was and Dr. Fingensten just skirted around the issue. I was so terrified when I left the office and I was crying when I got to NYU. After all that, I waited over a week to hear any results. I find it disheartening to feel that I was taken advantage of by a doctor. I will not be returning. read more

Dr. Fingesten is a special doctor. AS a 62 nyear old I've had many doctors but non as thorough as Dr. Figesten. Recently I was discharged from a hospital but was still very ill. If it wasn't for Dr fingesten being so thorough with her examination and getting me immediately admitted to NYU critical care there was a good chance I may have died, I was diagnosed eith pnuemonia and had blood clots in my lungs as well as in my legs. i have been a patient of Dr Fingesten's since 1999. The previous 10 years of the 90's,I had been hospitalized over 30 times due to a chronic condition that could not be stabilized. Since Dr Fingesten became my primary internist, I have not had a single hospitalization for my condition since her successful management of my illness as an outpatient. This is astonishing! She listens and makes adjustments, closely monitors me and works with what I am able / willing to do to heal myself verses what I "ought to do". She is pro-active and motivating. I think she is an acutely discerning observer which accounts for her great diagnostic skills. She really cares about her patients as an individual who happens to reside in a body that needs her help. Despite being in a financially challenged position, she wants me to see the best the profession has to offer. She has personally called specialists on my behalf, asking them to waive fees uncovered by Medicare so that I can have access to expert care. I am also very grateful to her office staff who work magic to get me seen on even short notice. There is always timely follow up with test results and prescription refills. I switch insurance companies to be able to continue seeing her! I've had some excellent doctors in my life and she is definitely among them. What I look for in a doctor is first, obviously, a thorough knowledge of medicine but other factors also come into play, such as intelligent caring, thoroughness of information, a sense of humor. Gone are the days when you could walk in to a family doctor and they would tell you exactly what is going on without having to go to all kinds of specialists or tests. But I get precisely that kind of treatment there. I love knowing that if I leave a message on the answering phone an immediate response comes, whether a prescription refill to the pharmacy is needed, an appointment needed or whatever...
