I'm no stranger to ribs. I've sampled them all over the planet. I've had beef, pork and some other life forms I'd rather not discuss at this review time but, needless to say I am a guy that likes a good thick meaty baby back rib, still steaming from the grill. I have eaten around the Portuguese sections of the various towns in my foraging territory and have passed this place many times. It used to be an Arthur Treacher's. Oh, did I give away my longevity? Yeah. The place has been around and I needed to try their cuisine and what better time than lunch. It is a little deceiving when you first get into the place as it deceptively looks like a just take-out ,but there are tables. For my first outing I had a rib and chicken combo with shoestring fried potatoes and rice. I know, 2 carbs. I do like potatoes and these did not disappoint. The meat was well cooked yet juicy, another grin bringer. The rice was also rich and tasty. I quickly became hooked. On my next visit I shared the full baby back rack with my friend and fellow foodie, Neil, and we couldn't finish it. Between all the rice, black beans and meaty ribs, 3 ribs were left and I let him take them home. Now I was hooked and had to try more. The barbequed shrimp in their shells and one of their marinated skirt steaks both fell victim to our forks and after trying desperately to yank the shells off of the shrimps we both gave in and consumed them whole. When it comes to churrasco, skirt steak or Roumanian tenderloin, the diaphram of the beast must be cooked, grilled or broiled lightly because it's such a thin piece of meat, yet tender and sweet. And the Fire Pit's version was as good as any I've had in my long foodie eating time on this mudball. You must order it rare so the sweet juice of the marbleized meat can still drip down your face. This firepit is OK, can't say it's outta this world outrageous, no, it's just OK. We've ordered from here four times and the second time was definitely the best experience but after my last I will not be ordering from here again. First time I got baby back ribs and they were flavorful but so dry, the rice was alright and the beans, although not super flavorful, were still good. My wife got a steak sandwich from the place, which she ordered medium, she took one bite and pulled the entire steak out from the sandwich, it was way overdone but she still liked the flavor so it wasn't so bad. Second time, I got some bbq pork spare ribs, they were delicious, seasoned very well and were tender. I got a side of potato salad which was bland but a bit of salt, pepper, and relish fixed that up and the fries were good, can't really mess those up. I wish I could tell you about the third time but I was drunk when I ordered. Fourth time, got the same bbq spare ribs which were a rip off, I definitely got the scraps. The ribs were more bone/cartilage than anything. I also ordered the BBQ wings this time around and I ate two and they tasted great, went for a third and when I bit down...*CRUNCH* I spit it out and saw two quills. I started closely looking at the wings and noticed that 6 out of 10 still had feathers and the quills in them. Not like one or two, no, I could've overlooked that, the most one had was 5. This was enough to ruin my appetite and make me want to throw them away. A lot of people wouldn't be that picky but for me that just grossed me out so bad. When they first opened this place was great. Now it's hit or miss and it's mostly miss. The wait time is absolutely ridiculous. Having to wait over an hour for delivery is just bad business. On top of having to wait they now skimp on your orders. The prices have gone up while amount and quality of food has gone way down. Fire Pit has excellent and very tasty chicken, ribs and other meats in general. Rice and beans are good and the spicy vegetables you get with them are also great. While I have been eating their food for about 5 years, there have been a few changes recently that I believe were not for the better. Their French Fries, which was one of the better features, were changed about two months ago to what can be described as generic fries, when they previous ones were the hand cut type. Prices have also increased, which is not the end of the world, but have not been updated on their website. Expect almost everything to be about $2 more than what you see online. To the owner...please go back to using your previous French Fry supplier and update your website. That aside, everything else is really good and the staff are friendly. read more

I've been here twice and the food is pretty good! The pork ribs and the chicken barbecue are awesome! The beef short ribs, not so much, they were not awful, just really dry. Their French fries are really delicious and so are the beans. The service is very friendly but can be really slow for the delivery and in the restaurant, but the barbecue is made to order, so I would rather wait for good food then have not good food fast. On a busy night like Sunday, I recommend picking up your food instead of having it delivered, it's much faster. read more

Everytime we have ordered food from here we loved the food. They offer big portions and reasonable prices. The chicken wrap has got to be, hands down *the* best chicken wrap I have ever tasted, though a bit salty. The french fries are also delicious. Though we live quite close to the restaurant, the delivery time is incredibly long and takes about 1 1/2 hours to arrive. The driver is quite friendly though and the food arrived warm which is really what counts. I would definitely recommend this kind of food for late-night chowing and hangover recovery. i don't know why they list catering as a option on their website when that is a complete lie. I will never recommend them to anyone for anything, worst experience ever, and when you trying calling the manager to complain or ask questions, he does the middle man routine and refuses to get on the phone and talk to you. Never in my whole life have i ever had to deal with such a unprofessional place. If they were more consistent with the good stuff, it would be a sure shot spot for deliveries when i don't feel like cooking and they would earn another star. Fire pit was a nice addition to Kearny, I couldn't really find anywhere else for BBQ in the area besides picnic so I was happy to try it. My initial thoughts were it was okay, the BBQ was pretty decent but the side dishes were very generic. It didn't help that I tried delivery, but everything was soggy. I tried it once more and picked it up, I decided to try the wings and they weren't very good. The sauce was too sweet and didn't taste anything like buffalo sauce. Their combos make the food options more enjoyable since you get to try out different types all at once. Their side options also complement to a better meal. So if you are planning on trying them, you will need to allow the time. While we waited, we had the shrimp in garlic sauce that was really garlicy and succulent. There is plenty of garlic in the sauce to dip in that wonderful Portuguese bread. We also ordered black beans and the Portuguese fries to go with the ribs. These ribs aren't like any other ribs I've ever had. They are grilled with a savory homemade sauce on them that make the outside very crispy and tasty and tender to bite. There's no bar-b-q sauce on them, so you really get the flavor of the babyback ribs. The beans and fries were really wonderful! read more

We even left some rice because it was too much for us. I gave it 3 stars because they take a bit long to prepare but then again it is bbq and I only like a few things on their menu. Also they need to update their menu prices online. My coworker picked up the food but it turned out to be more than what it was on the website. They should definitely do something about that. WARNING DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY. Ordered delivery and it took 75 min to be delivered. They had said it would take about 45 minutes, so after 60 min I was concerned (and starving). I called to check in and was told the delivery guy would be there shortly. Another 10 minutes went by and I couldn't take it anymore! Finally after calling again, the delivery personnel reached out to me via cell and told me he was lost...... My room mate and I are not only in the same town, but within a 2 mile (or less) distance from the restaurant! If you had gotten lost, WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL AND ASK FOR DIRECTIONS? We got our food and it was, needless to say, room temperature. I always thought when you were hungry everything was supposed to taste better, but this food was WAY TOO SALTY (and i LOVEEEEE salty food). I gave it 2 stars because I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that it would have tasted better if it was hot and fresh. Also.. just as an FYI - no one even offered to reduce the price of the meal for us. It used to be good as others stated. Overpriced food for smaller portions. End up throwing away most of the rice because it's overloaded with it. They never add an adequate amount of Spanish potatoes or fries unless you order a side which is just adding to the price. Never get delivery from this place. You'll never get your order and it's most likely wrong when you do. The one and only time we had it delivered, they screwed up the order and requested the food back when they brought the right order. I personally did not care about giving it back but made me think who were they going to give that to after I opened it up. Not good for a restaurant to do that. To conclude, the meal is usually delicious but not the same quality or quantity as it was when it first opened. Don't bother with delivery, pick it up. Hope that helps. read more

Absolutely horrible! I recently moved into the area and fell in love with the Portuguese style of grilling their meat! I ordered the chicken and rib combo for $16.00 to go, after over an hour waiting inside in the restaurant I was ready to walked out. But they finally gave me my order, after driving back home I was ready to eat and reduce my hangriness! When I opened up my platter I was shocked and disappointed, the ribs were thin and overcharred and the chicken was dried. I was so angry that all I could do was threw it away. EXCELLENT! This has quickly become one of our favoite places to grab a bite to eat! The food is inexpensive, tastes great, cooked up quickly and made to order. Infact, you can walk over and watch your food be cooked over the fire pit if you like! I love that the owners are always there! They are extremely friendly and really want your feedback. The staff is very friendly as well and goes above and beyond to make sure that you have a great experience there! We had to run in there the other day for a quick bite in between thing but didnt have much time to eat. We were able to place the order by phone, arrived ten minutes later, sat down and the food was done and ready for us to eat! GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! They seemed busy so I waited about 5 mins till she asked if she could help me. They didn't put my order in. So she told me I had to wait an additional 15 to 20 mins. I was mad but I waited in car I went back in 20 mins later and it still wasn't done. So I left I ordered from Stephanie's barbecue in Nutley. I will give this place 2 stars because I have not been disappointed with the taste of the food. I have ordered food from this establishment a few different times in the past year. Last time I ordered happened to be christmas eve. I called at noon to place an order for pick up at 6, and I was given some bad attitude by the gentleman taking the order, but I let it go because I assumed he was busy.. it was christmas eve. So after picking up the food and bringing it home, half of my order was missing. I had ordered two combination meals - which I thought would be more than enough to feed 6 people because other BBQ places are very generous with their portions. This was NOT the case. I called and explained to them that there was not even enough chicken to feed two people and they had forgotten my salad. The same man was very hostile on the phone and explained they were busy and running out of food. So I then asked him politely if he would deliver the food which they ( probably intentionally didn't put the in the bag) and I was told " We are closed, come pick it up yourself!" So my boyfriend went to pick up the food and he said they were not happy to see him. Needless to say, all we received was the mushy salad and had to go to another BBQ spot to order more chicken. Last night, we decided to try fire pit again, we were craving BBQ. When we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by the most unfriendly counter girl i have ever encountered. She looked at us and murmured, " You can have a seat" in the bitchiest tone I have heard in a while... And my response was " we are just ordering to go" and she said " well what do you want?", again, very snarky. We placed our order and sat and waited a good 25 minutes for our food, while others had come and gone after us. So we went to the counter only to find our food had been sitting out for god only knows how long, it wasn't even hot. When we requested bread, her answer was " I don't have any." This enraged my boyfriend and he said " well why does everyone who is at a table have a basket of warm bread?" and she replies " Well, what do you want me to do?" I think the owner of this place really need to train better employees to work in this location. Recently another Fire Pit was opened in the next town over and I plan to try this location out. I absolutely refuse to enter that place or even order for delivery. Their customer service and sheer disregard for quality and value angers me and I would love to hear some feedback from an owner/ manager who frequents in this store.
