Ferry st Bbq is very popular in my neighborhood. The rice is right for what you get. Ribs can be hit or miss sometimes as they may have a lot of fat. With the full order of ribs you used to get 8-9 ribs. The price increased and now you only get 6-7 ribs. The workers are nice and the rice is good. I want to try the shrimp platter as that looks really good. I have had the salmon and beef ribs as well as steak. The flavor is always good but the tenderness of the beef is inconsistent. Just as I remember it before, it is the same today- lines out the door and the phones ringing non stop. While there is ample space for dining in, I ordered take out. Gentleman told me it would be ready in 15 minutes, I ended up waiting for 25, no biggie as I enjoyed the scent of roasting chicken on open fire (seriously, I do). We always love to stop by for delicious, very well-priced food. We have eaten in the restaurant and also have taken it out before, as they have many tables available. Such simple and casual brazillian bbq...but so good! Service is super fast. Walked in and saw a long line but it was moving quick. And the girl behind the counter was even faster. Whole chicken- delicious. Spare ribs- great flavor..but not enough meat. Yellow rice and black beans- good, nothing special..but once you had the red hot sauce and the clear vinegar sauce, even better. french fries- right amount of crisp and right amount of salt. Very rude service. Ordered chicken/ribs with rice and fries to go. He asked if I wanted anything else. To me that would typically mean do you want any more items to order, so I said "no". As he packing the order I realized he wasn't including plastic forks, so I asked for those. He pulled a huge attitude and he rudely and abruptly said, "that's why I asked if you wanted anything else!". Does that mean I have to ask for a bag or a receipt too? I love this place. It's a local Portuguese barbecue restaurant and this was my go to in college and still continues to be a great lunch spot for when I'm really hungry and don't wanna spend too much. All my friends and I love it. It's not the fanciest place but it gets the job done. I always order the half chicken and the amount of food is insane. I'm a frequent customer here and I have no complaints. Like many other barbecue restaurants in Newark, Ferry St. has quality food at an affordable price. I usually order their chicken and salmon. Such large portions and very filling. Everything that I've had is well seasoned, except for the occasional salty piece of salmon. Another thing that I've noticed about their food is that they're salads are usually not fresh. Most of the time when I order a salad, the lettuce is browning and slimy. So I try to just stick with the fries and rice. The service is pretty fast depending on how busy they are. They're still open for takeout during COVID which is great! read more

This restaurant is located in Little Portugal (Newark) and noticed how the server treated the light complexion people different than the others. Only they got offered bread and when we asked her, she made up an excuse saying there was no more for us even though they came 10 minutes after she had taken our order. The funny part is that the server is Guatemalan not Portuguese so either she's given instructions to do this or she's just a walking contradiction. This is a local gem in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark that is popular among my colleagues and having lived there for three years, I had become a patron myself. Authentic Portuguese barbecue that is definitely a bang for the buck! I usually get the 1/2 chicken that comes with a mountain load of fries and their amazing rice that tastes buttered. That rice is one of the best I've ever tried and I've always wondered how they cook it. The chicken is roasted simply but is already flavorful even without the hot sauce (I actually prefer it without.) This meal would only cost me around $8 and can easily feed me for lunch and dinner. I was also able to try their pork ribs before which was also delicious! Not really sure why I haven't tried their other items yet in the many times I've eaten here but I'm sure I'll find a chance to do so. read more

The etiquette of the owner, the overly salted inedible fare because I would not deem it food, the disgruntled wait staff and the woefully needed renovation of the barbecue pit, which looks like it could collapse at any given time! Dear other reviewers: For anyone that says "this isn't real BBQ", please understand it's *Portuguese BBQ*. It's not supposed to be like American food. It's authentic Portuguese (similar to Brazilian). It's not supposed to be slathered in sugary red sauce. That wouldn't be "real" Portuguese/Brazilian food. It's fire-broiled in salt. That's how it's done in these countries. Now that we've cleared that up. I'm Ferry Ferry disappointed with the service here. It has ranged from gruff-but-friendly (the owner, I think), to cold and mechanical (generally), to absolutely out of line. Which is when a heavy-set woman literally snatched money out of my hand, threw change down on the counter, and said very derogatory things about me in Portuguese (I speak a little from my time in both Portugal and Braseeeel). The worst part came when I remembered it was chilly outside and I didn't want to eat my to go food in the car, which was parked 5 minutes away, by which time the food would have cooled down. So I asked her if it was okay to sit and eat the food in house. "No" she barked. "You say to go, I make it to go, you go." I said, I'd tip the waitresses and everything, but I'd changed my mind. "No, sorry. You have to take it out of here." I'm not sure if this is a policy or if she was just the meanest server in Newark (and there are plenty of others) (probably both), but it's the kind of customer service nightmare that Yelp was made for. She needs some ferry dust sprinkled on her. Still, I can't give them less than 5 stars, because Ferry St BBQ is - despite those awful issues - one of the best, and best-value, meals in New Jersey. Perhaps the best Portuguese rotisserie chicken in the US. Right up there with the amazing stuff I had in Montreal. This is the reason why sometimes the lines here will be out the door. And speaking of long lines, waiting in Ferry St traffic (and Ironbound traffic in general) to get here in the evenings is going to give you a headache. But not as much as that thing you did with your boyfriend last night, did. What to get: 1/4 portion chicken with rice and fries. What else: 1/4 portion of my heart. The other three quarters belong to others. Anything else: I thought that woman was going to hang, draw, and 1/4 me. What else: A girl stole my chicken, but we ran after her and we 1/4. And: Well you're supposed to be in court, so are you going to 1/4 what? What will you wear: Maybe some denim or some 1/4roy. And what about the crime scene: Oh it's been 1/4ned off. It's a place I'd detour to Newark for (along with the Portuguese Custard Tarts aka Pasteis De Nata from Teixeira Bakery). If you're not in the mood for chicken, or FSBBQ is closed, then try Altas Horas nearby, a 24 hour Brazilian diner with some great X-Tudos and drinks.
