Born again fans are we! We have been going to The Firehouse Grill since they opened, but haven't been there in quite a while. A buy one-get one coupon that magically appeared in our mailbox inspired us to go back. And go back we shall! First off, our server was attentive, smiling and super cool with our coupon - unlike some places that shun you once you tell them you have one. And yeah, we tipped her on the full amount of the check. I ordered a chopped salad which was exactly what I was jonesing - especially the housemade avocado ranch dressing on the side! My husband had a turkey burger and fries that he was very happy with - cooked exactly the way he asked for it and free of hidden sauces that ruin his burgers at most joints. I stole more than few fries and they were cooked just right and flavored well. The star of the show was my 6 year old's pork sliders! She wanted to order a rack of ribs, but we knew that would be way too much food, so our server suggested the sliders as an alternative. Pulled pork with homemade BBQ sauce and a touch of coleslaw on little pretzel rolls. YUM! Drinks filled by others servers who noticed they were getting low - a rare treat lately. Came to watch the Blackhawks Game and there was a good crowd of people. Manager gave us the option of sitting upstairs or downstairs but the downstairs is definitely the way to go. Got the arugula steak and was definitely impressed. The sauce for the steak was delicious and the arugula was fresh. Had the fried bananas for dessert which was yummy! I would say the downside of my meal was the coffee which was not hot enough. I asked for a replacement which was slightly better but still on the warm side. read more

We've been to this place a couple times since we've been living in Evanston. The food is pretty decent (have tried the wings, salads & tacos), and they have a decent selection of peers. They have a nice big patio to dine outside during the summer, and we found the service out there to be average. The tacos were very good & they are a great deal at happy hour ($3 per taco). Overall pretty good food & service, not enough to wow you, but definitely enough to keep coming back since it is in the neighborhood. read more

I went to the Firehouse for the first time recently and I was quite excited walking up to the front door. When driving by in the summer people are outside enjoying the patio and it has the looks of a solid bar and grill, kinda like Wilde in Lakeview, one of my favorite places. When I walked in my excitement subsided and I was a little disappointed by what I saw. I liked some of the decor inside as its firefighter related however it's no fancier than a local bar. The tables were a little dirty/sticky, the booths were covered in old vinyl, etc. For such a well kept building it was rather disappointing inside. I was expecting something a little more grandiose and historic inside and instead it was just like any other neighborhood bar. As for the dining experience, when you walk in you seat yourself. There's a little sign that instructs you to do this. The servers were very prompt and helpful and took our order very quickly. I went with The Chief burger and my sister went with a selection of tacos (pulled pork, barbacoa, and chicken and chimichurri). My sister enjoyed the tacos and the burger was very good. The fries were a little stale but they grew on me and I eventually finished them. Would I go back? Sure. There's nothing wrong with this place at all as the food was decent. So disappointing. This place is way over priced and the food was flavorless. Anyone who scores this place well probably only go for beer, which wasn't that bad. We got the quesadillas as an appetizer. They looked thrown together and were unimaginative. I expected something a bit more creative for $9. It was basically just one flour tortilla folded in half with cheese. I know what you are thinking, duh that's what a quesadilla is! But they present it like something more thought-through than that-- especially for that price. It was also just thrown on the plate with two disposable containers for sour cream and salsa... Absolutely no effort in the presentation. Next the $13 fish and chips. Think about the ones you get at the Celtic Knot or Nevins... They are both cheaper than firehouse and SO much better. They gave us two small pieces of fish in bland chewy batter with old fries... Yes, old. Like they cooked them an hour ago and left them under a heating lamp. Really people... It takes 3 min to freshly fry up some fries... What's the deal. The one plus was that there was a bone in my tiny fish piece, which means that it's fresh, even if it also means they can't fillet fish well. They get even two stars from me because they were very friendly and even though their beer on tap was not a very long or varied list, at least there we decent options. I've seen cheaper beer options in Evanston, but whatever. The kids menu was good and appropriately prices. Hope you have a better time than I did if you decide to go. read more

I went here for dinner with a friend a few weeks ago, and I actually had a really nice time. Our server was attentive and helpful. The food was excellent. We both got burgers. The burgers here are huge and they're delicious. The fries are also excellent. We were there on a Saturday night and it seemed fairly empty. I did notice a couple who walked in approximately the same time we did. They were seated but a server never came to take their order. They eventually ended up leaving. It seems like service here might be hit or miss. The atmosphere is really unique, since it's an old fire station. Just came tonight with my sister and her kids for burgers. They serve substantial portions and the service is fast and friendly. The atmosphere is great for kids, I mean, who doesn't like being in an old converted fire station? However, there's nothing particularly unique about the food. I've been at the Firehouse several times before, for both lunch and dinner, and I've found the overall experience adequate and satisfactory, but not exceptional. This last visit was different, pleasantly. Though they have a fairly extensive regular menu, I decided to take advantage of the lunch specials, and ordered the tacos (spicy pork, beef and fish). They came on soft flour shells, were fully loaded, tasty and excellent. Along with a spicy, hot mug of grogg (wine with cinnamon and raisins), it made for the perfect counterpoint to a gloomy afternoon (with the company of a longtime good friend). Apparently exploring the menu, and stepping out of one's comfort zone of selections, can make all the difference between good and great. Built in the old fire station on Chicago Avenue, they have a fun décor with memorabilia from Evanston history, plus a wall of fire truck toys for the kids to keep busy with. They have kept the menu fresh over the years and the food is solid. Great beer list on tap as well. Services is always prompt and friendly. We hosted my dad's 70th birthday party upstairs in the private room--also great for families with kids, including pool tables, video games, air hockey, etc. We come about once a month, and it is always worth it. read more

I like this place for the decor. It's a real firehouse. The food was above average. I had a pretty good fish and chips plate and a side pasta salad. They are both very good. The burgers are ok, but if you hit it right, it can be very good. The wait for the food was ridiculously long. More than 20 min I would say. The price is reasonable. The dessert was amazing: banana and ice cream with chocolate and vanilla sauce. We met some friends there and had a nice chat. I have a soft spot for the "corner pub". While Fire House isn't a corner pub, it's a great place to unwind for a spell, chat with the staff, and/or watch a game. If you're a "belly up to the bar" type, they have a nice drink selection and friendly bartenders (if you're more family-oriented, there's plenty of table seating, too). As for the food, the burgers and wraps are GREAT, although the fries that accompany them are hit or miss. The salads can also be hit or miss, but the desserts make up for that ;) All in all, whether you prefer the corner pub getaway or an easy place to feed the family, Fire House hits the spot. read more

I grew up in the neighborhood where Firehouse is. I have seen maybe 3 other restaurants pass through that building. After seeing that Firehouse managed to stay in business for more than 6 months, I eventually decided to check it out. My friends, family and I have been regulars ever since. A few friends and I like to stop in from time to time to play pool upstairs. I think its a great neighborhood spot to knock back some beers. (I just sometimes wish they would stay open a little later). Most of the food is slightly above average. However, this place specializes in great burgers! The "Firehouse Burger" is one I always keep coming back to. Its a super good basic, fairly large burger served on a pretzel bun at an awesome price. I highly suggest trying it or one of the others they serve! I always love a place I can come back to where the staff recognizes you and greets you with a smile. Its this kind of service I have received at the Firehouse which is one of the many reasons I keep coming back. Friday nights can be a little loud when its busy so if you're looking for somewhere quiet, you may consider stopping in on another night. Overall, I give the Firehouse an 'A' rating. Love this bar/restaurant. I've been several times and have yet to be disappointed. The only reason it doesn't get five stars, other than I never give five stars, is because it doesn't stay open later and the TV's are too small and located in high, hard-to-see spots. There are always about five or six draft beers and it seems like Guinness and Stella are the mainstays with the others rotating every so often. Half-Acre's Daisy Cutter, Founder's All-Day IPA, and seasonal beers from New Belgium and Sam Adams are some of the rotating taps I've seen. We generally sit at the bar and have always had wonderful, attentive service from the staff at Firehouse. The bartenders and other patrons always seem to be having a good time, as it does have that sort of neighborhood charm. I've never sat upstairs, but I've walked up there and it looks really cool. Pool tables and bubble hockey, plus big windows make it a pretty cool seating area. We've tried most of the food and it's above average, but the blackened salmon sandwich is what you're ordering. I'm 6'5" 220 and even after my wife steals a huge chunk of salmon, I'm still full. This sandwich offers a huge piece of moist, flaky salmon on an even softer pretzel bun with red onion, lettuce, and tomato. It's bananas and pretty much the only thing I order now. The burgers are really good and the tacos are awesome, too, but I agree with another reviewer that some hot sauce/salsa can give them a nice shock. My wife and I tend to eat dinner around 8 or 9, and sometimes don't walk to the Firehouse because they do close much earlier than other bars, and nobody wants to eat the late-night wilted lettuce and cold fries. We also found it peculiar that Firehouse is a designated Blackhawks Bar, because of the mediocre TV's. Good thing I'm a Red WIngs fan. read more

Food is decent, but over-priced. For a relatively small burger and fries and a "side chili" (don't let that fool you, it's no bigger than a dixie cup) I paid $14.00. My wife had the chipotle bean burger (completely underwhelmed, think the veggie burgers you get in a big plastic sleeve from Costco) and I got my toddler son the mini corn-dogs and fries. I was actually fairly impressed by the mini-dogs. They were way better than you'd expect from a kids menu. After driving by this place for years, we finally tried it. The inside decor is simple with old murals and big screen TVs. They have a great selection of beers. The food was really good. I ordered the Firehouse burger with bacon and fries. I also was being adventurous and ordered a small bowl of chili for my fries. They food was quick to come out, only cause we came at lunch and was a little slower. I love bacon and is was very tasty. With that said it was actually the worst part of the meal! The chili fries were full of flavor. They even offer hot sauce if you want more spice. The burger was full of flavor as well, cooked to perfection. Juicy is the best way I can describe it. We'd often go during college breaks to have a few drinks and a bite to eat, and now that friends are moving back to the suburbs with their families, it's been fun to go back! My family and I are extremely grateful for Firehouse Grill's patio being open and making the proper accommodations to keep us entertained and our tummies full. Outdoor heaters, tables spaced properly, and impeccable service. Servers wear masks, and tables and chairs are sanitized even when somebody moves from there to sit at a different table, so it really makes us feel safe during this pandemic. Here, they treat you like family. The servers are extremely knowledgeable of their menu and beverages. I always get a burger, build your own style or a pizza that you can also modify because they have almost everything. With the chilly weather we finished with a couple Hot Totties that were AMAZING. Last time we wanted to go it was storming outside unfortunately so we decided to order for carry out, picked up the food and everything was fresh and ready when they said it would be! My husband and I ate here for dinner and thought this was a perfectly average restaurant. The place looks unique from the outside, but was fairly plain inside and I felt that the food was overpriced for the quantity and quality. Nothing we ordered tasted bad, but everything was just "good" rather than amazing. My husband ordered a burger and said it was decent, but not one of the best he's had. We also ordered the nacho appetizer, which was the most disappointing thing we got since it was so small. I believe there were about 10 chips or so and my husband ended up telling me eat it all since the amount was not enough to share between two people.
