This place has gone really bad! I raved about this place because they did have amazing food. But every time I come back, it just gets worse and worse. This time I will never come back here. I ordered for pick-up through GrubHub. Yes, maybe because it was a pick-up it got cold or something but I live 3 mins away walking distance. I placed the order at 7:20pm and my boyfriend got there at 7:40pm, when they said it will be ready by 7:44pm. So, it leaves me to assume they gave us pre-made cold food instead of being fresh made. I ordered Sweet Chipotle Wings with Blue Cheese sauce, Pretzel with Cheese sauce, and BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich with fries. So what's wrong with the food you ask? The wings were fine. Just fine but the blue cheese was watery and tasted like water instead of blue cheese. The pretzel was burnt, like black burnt! The cheese sauce was solid and cold, it was more a cheese block than sauce. Lastly, the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich lacked sauce, it had big chunks of meat instead of the way pulled pork is suppose to be, and even though it lacked sauce I don't know how they made the bread soggy... I assume it has been sitting out and the bread absorbed a lot of sauce or water. Whatever. Most importantly, the fries was soggy, cold, and tasteless. Ugh, it was just bad. Bad food, bad service, bad quality. So sad. read more

08/14/20 UPDATE and raising my review to a solid 5 stars. So glad I gave it another try after the owner reached out to me and apparently fixed whatever went wrong a couple of months ago! Tonight's fish tacos were perfect - generous pieces of perfectly seasoned fish and avocado, all the trimmings - everything was fresh and good and I'm so looking forward to my next visit. I was also very impressed with the friendly staff and how everyone was really doing their best to keep things Covid-observant. Highly recommend. ------ I want so badly to like this place - it's walking distance and friendly but so far two out of two meals have been ... not good. Had the fish tacos last week and while the fish was decent, the promised toppings were non existent. No slaw, one lonely slim slice of avocado, and the side of lime cilantro rice was dry and seemed like it had been reheated one time too many. Today I was craving marinara after a long day of driving and ordered the spaghetti and meatball. The meatball could .... not be cut with a STEAK KNIFE ... and the pasta was incredibly spicy - as if someone had tripled or quadrupled the black pepper in the sauce. Mind you, I don't mind spicy stuff but not really where I'm not expecting it, and when the proportion of "spicy" to "flavor" is way off. I'm not sure if I'll be trying them a third time. I give the food 4 stars but the service a 0. When you consider a gritty dining room combined with stinky restrooms, the score goes down to 1 star. Several male waitstaff had badditudes and service was s-l-o-w even despite few customers. Furthermore, the place was dirty and gritty and the bathrooms smelled like they haven't been cleaned in a month. Immediately after posting the last review we were contacted by the owner. We were offered a gift card to give it a try again. We did. Here is what we discovered- if ordering for take out, you must make your order as simple as possible. Do not ask for any type of modification to your order. Just keep it simple! So... I went here and got the fried chicken and vowed never to go back. But I am so happy I did. I went during happy hour and the items on the happy hour were five dollars each! It was a nice way to be able to taste more items on the menu. I had some corn fritters bites? Idk they were absolutely delicious. I regret getting the pizza we did. We got the all white one and it was basically a pizza with full garlic and onion . Not my type of pizza. We still ate it though... Idk, I went back on NYE and my friends thought it was good too. Need a casual date night rendezvous? Head over to Firehouse Grill in Evanston. Although we were in the area for a different dining experience, that place was a bust. My date and I stumbled across this place. I liked the option of indoor and outdoor seating. At first glance, the menu seems average but the friendly waitress insisted the food was good. Actually we were looking for pizza and theirs did not disappoint. The build your own deep dish Detroit style was excellent. We loaded it up with 3 kinds of cheese, pepperoni and sausage. What a hefty, gooey, delicious pizza and we finished it! Washed it down with the house beer, locally brewed and a portion of profit goes to the local firehouse. Cupcake bakery across the street. After all the meat and cheese, you need some sugar! Abundant street parking one block away. Def a good find and highly recommended! read more

I stopped in here during the custards last stand fest for some lunch. Beers were reasonable and good seletion. You can low ball with a schlitz for 2.25 or honker for 5. What's not to like?! They had a special that sounded very tempting beets and goat cheese, but opted for the fish tacos instead and was not disappointed. Wife did the fish and chips but has had better. Kids seemed satisfied with pasta and burger. We sat outside and it was really relaxing. Of course a cold beer after 12 miles on the bike can be that way ;-) I had a hard time making a food decision because of the variety on the menu. More than just bar food - a full menu with some interesting entrees. We were there for lunch and found the burger and buffalo chicken sandwiches excellent as was the service from CeCe who was very efficient, plus genuinely friendly and helpful. Had a phenomenal experience here the other night. Steve, the new chef, is KILLING it with menu changes and additions. I had the shrimp and grits (out of this world) and my partner had a burger. Our server Gabi was quick, efficient, and super friendly. Difficult to give FHG in Evanston a review as the service and food are so inconsistent. Had a superb Caesar salad with grilled chicken on a Friday night, and an atrocious burger topped with a slab of cold cheese and tasteless French fries on the following Sunday. Likewise the service: attentive waiter on Friday and was repeatedly ignored on the following Sunday. Gave up trying to get my waiter's attention and left what I thought covered the cost of the meal. read more

We were a group of 35 and we pre arranged a "family style dinner": Caesar salad, fried chicken, ravioli, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, grilled veggies, and for desert, carrot cake and brownies. Sounds yummy, right? Well the Caesar salad was ok, but the rest was absolutely terrible. The fried chicken was all breasts and wings. No thighs or legs. The wings were 10 parts breading and 1 quart meat. The breast were completely overcooked and completely dried out .Even the carrot cake was HORRIBLE! How in the world can you screw up carrot cake? The brownies were awful. The mashed potatoes were ok! And it was $40 per, plus tax and service. Horrible food. If you go, order Caesar salad and mashed potatoes. read more

Don't overthink it, walk in! It's worth a visit! I had put off checking this place out for a while after walking past it almost every day for a year....big mistake! Walked into a very warm and welcoming space with great service by the staff all around. I had the chopped salad wrap with sweet potato fries (lay off me i'm trying to be healthier) and it came out hot and fresh! Their service & ambiance is all good - no problems. I'm not sure about the food, though. I had their Susan Salad about one month ago. Upset stomach & diarrhea within an hour. But at the time, I didn't pin it on the z firehouse salad. This afternoon, I ordered the same salad. Again, upset stomach & diarrhea within an hour. I eat salad about 3 times per week. There's nothing exotic in their Susan salad: apple slices, blue cheese, greens, grilled chicken. I have eating these ingredients in other salads for years. I don't have food allergies. And I don't have stomach issues after eating salads from Hoosier Mama, Valley Lodge, Capitol, Foodstuffs, etc., so there must be some issue with the Firehouse. Sure, I guess I could order something else, but that's not the point. Getting sick after eating the same thing twice at the same restaurant is - and it's not a great experience. read more

I eat here fairly frequently and have to say I've always had a good experience. The service is friendly and even when busy they make a clear effort to be attentive. They have a nice selection of drinks and their food is delicious. A couple of my favorites are the Irish pub burger and the fish and chips. The burger is juicy, thick and flavorful. And with the addition of cheese and onions perfect for me. But lately my absolute favorite has been the fish and chips. You get two huge pieces of fish, perfectly battered in this light flaky crust. It's not greasy and is cooked just right. The crust is light and crisp the fish fresh and soft both full of flavor. It's filling and just mouth watering. The fries are the perfect amount of done with just the right mixture of soft and crisp. I highly recommend it. The atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming, and when the weather is nice their patio is lovely to eat on. read more

Service was just awful and food was mediocre. When we first sat down our table was dirty and we asked the hostess to please wipe it down or give us a new table. She told us that she had just cleaned it and acted annoyed. She came back a few minutes later and wiped down only one corner and left the rest for us to clean off ourselves. The chairs also had crumbs and food on it. We should have left at that point but then it got worse. Our server acted like we were a nuisance to her from the start. It took 30+ minutes to get our food and when it came two items were missing. One dish was brought out ten minutes later and it was COLD. Not room temperature but tasted like They had just taken it out of the fridge. The other item never came and when we asked about it the server only said that it was on the ticket and she would send a manager out. 10 more minutes and the manager never came. Eventually we asked her to just wrap it up for us because we were ready to go. The manager never showed their face and they ended up bringing us a completely different entree to go than the one we ordered. It was clearly never on the ticket. We left and won't be returning. read more

I think these are now the best in town! In addition, the wait staff - especially CeCe R. - is very friendly, attentive and efficient. Just moved back to Evanston and with the pandemic impacting so many restaurants The Firehouse is a great option with their huge outdoor patio. The food was great! Burgers were cooked perfectly and had great options and varieties. The spaghetti is made in-house, they use local farms for their meats and they have a killer Detroit Style Pizza! Buttery crust, great pizza options, and their cheese curds are so good!! They also have a smoker in house and their BBQ sandwich is so smokey and delicious! The staff is always nice! Our server was named Jamie. The owners are even better. Hands on, touch base which each customer and really building a relationship with a lot of the guests! We will be back! read more

My complaint is that the fish and chips serving was so small. Most places will give you 3 medium pieces or at least 2 large, plus a small side dish (coleslaw or peas). Firehouse only gives 2 medium-sized pieces and just fries. That's it. For $2.50 more I could get all-you-can-eat fish and chips-- large pieces--at a restaurant I won't name. Next favorite was the fish (but the chips part less so). Street parking can be tricky especially with cars lined up by the traffic light right next to the restaurant.
