My wife liked the idea of having the jam better than sauce. The problem was it turned out to be RASPBERRY jam NOT strawberry. Luckily my wife isn't ALLERGIC to Raspberries. Then there was a service charge added to the bill, but NO WHERE in the restaurant or on the menu is this mentioned. My wife also commented that there was only ONE server, and as more people arrived the service became slower. It seemed that the one server was just overwhelmed and didn't smile. In summary, and IMHO this isn't a restaurant for celebrating birthdays! Based on this experience my wife said she wouldn't go back unless she was going with a group of people who decided to go there. My wife said it's a shame Evanston Corner Bistro was one of her favorite places.

The food is great. The service, by one in particular, not so much. I don't make reviews often but after a third time going to eat there and a third time of less than ok service, I feel I need to. The first time, my daughter ordered a veggie burger. She was delivered a veggie sloppy joe. When we asked why it was a sloppy Joe instead of a veggie burger, the food runner said oh your waitress didn't tell you we are out of the veggie burger? No she didn't. So then she comes over and we look at her and we say you were out of the veggie burger? And she says oh yeah I didn't think you'd mind if I made the switch. Well they are two totally different things so you really shouldn't assume that somebody wouldn't mind. My daughter not wanting to rock the boat said she didn't mind and would eat it anyway but she would've picked something different had she been asked and not chosen the sloppy Joe. We let that one go. The next time I ordered food to have delivered, we ordered the half chicken and it was supposed to come with slaw, it came with no slaw and two thighs so there was no white meat whatsoever. Again we didn't complain because we'd ordered to deliver it and we were hungry and we just ate it. Third time was last night we went and we asked how long it would be to sit outside she looked at us and said I don't know. I don't really think that's an appropriate answer for someone who seating you, you generally have some idea of when seating is going to be available. She seemed annoyed and just wanted to set us somewhere. So we sat at the bar at a table. When my daughter told her she was deciding between the fish tacos and the veggie burger, that wasn't there the last time, the lady looked at her again and said I don't know. Literally no explanation of either dish or which one might be better than the other as a suggestion. So she ordered a veggie burger, we ate and we left. I'm telling you this woman did not say thank you, she did not say have a good night, and I don't complain I am very easy-going but this woman is incredibly rude. This is now the third time that we've had her as a server as we were there another time but nothing of importance happened, she just wasn't very nice. She has dark hair and tattoos and I believe she may be the manager, not sure how. I will never go back there, it's unfortunate because the food is actually really good. read more

Over the last month I have been here 4 times for different reasons; a business lunch, date night, going away party and Sunday Brunch. Firehouse is just the place we always go to. The burgers are great, but the new grass-fed burger is excellant and good for you. The beef comes from Bill Kurtis's farm and is really delicious and clean. Not greasy yet full of flavor. It is hard to pass up any salad since they are always fresh and big, maybe too big. The fries are great and I love the brunch menu. The banana french toast is excellant. The service is always friendly and eager. This place can get real busy at times, but I have never felt I have received bad service. It has always been family friendly. I grew up in Evanston and had written off firehouse a long time ago. The service was meh and so was the food. Through the grapevine I heard that it was under new ownership and decided to give it another try. I'm happy I did. The new menu has some of the old firehouse staples (the nachos are still the same and delicious just like I remembered them) but also new more exciting dishes. I particularly liked the meat loaf sandwich and the chop stixs salad. I hear more menu items will be introduced and look forward to reintroducing firehouse into my dining out routine and trying ALL the new items! read more

Great food. We had the birria with cheese, carne asada, and banh mi tacos. The brisket in the birria was amazing. They gave us some on aluminum foil when we were waiting for our order. I was glad I ordered it. The taco was the perfect combination of savory, crunchy, with a touch of sweet. The carne asada was tender and flavorful. The banh mi was a surprise.
