We came here for the secret entrance, we stayed for the DJ ROCKMAN hip-hop and rap set because his music was perfect for us. So was his Ramen shirt. We love those 90s jams and although there seem to be some people of the older generation wanting non-rap music, my group of friends thought it was perfectly fine and more-so enjoyable otherwise. The drinks were good, I liked the Fitzgerald and Mules. The bartenders were great, entertaining, but slow af. At first, I thouhgt, I guess it takes time to make something delicious. I ended up here for a friend's wedding's after party. I was not quite sure how to enter the bar until they pointed me to the bookcase. Ok, that's pretty cool. The bar has a cool quirkiness to it and I immediately liked it. They made some mean Moscow Mules, and whatever my husband was drinking, he liked it enough to get it 3 times instead of changing it up. Happy hour even made the tab completely and totally reasonable! The bartenders were spunky and fun, and the clientele ranged from couples having a romantic chat to a group of day drinking individuals who had a blast on the dance area. There was a stage, and I can only imagine it would be a fun and intimate venue to see someone live. A lot of downtown bars come and go, and many of them are completely forgettable, but I hope this one sticks around because it's a little something special. read more

This was an interesting bar. Cute bookcase entrance concept, but the bouncer for the night didn't seem too thrilled that I wanted to get a picture with the bookcase. The cocktail drinks ranged from $9-$12. There was a wide selection of liquor. I got the light daiquiri and a gimlet. The drinks were balanced - not too strong, and not overly sweet either. I do wish there had been a live band playing. They advertised "DJ all night" outside, but I didn't really see a DJ. However, the ambiance was nice. The place was packed for 10PM on a Friday night. This is definitely one of the bars that I would visit if I'm ever in town again. read more

Super cute little speakeasy inside the Firehouse Hostel. I was lucky they were open last time I came. The first time I visited in the fall, they were closed due to covid. I love the vibe inside - it's cozy and dimly lit, with candles. The vibe was complete with a disco ball and upside down Christmas tree. It sounds strange, but it was a really unique vibe. The bartenders were so friendly, and they made some great drinks. The drinks were a bit small, but they were tasty. They did a good job of spacing out the tables during covid as well. You do not need to be a guest at the hostel to go here to have a drink, but if you are a hostel guest, you get a discount off your bill. I will be back! read more

Fantastic bartenders. Great service. Boozy craft cocktails. Seclusive setting. All behind a bookcase in Firehouse Hostel. You will truly feel in a world apart from dirty six a few blocks away. If you go on a weekday evening, you are bound to find space to settle down, listen to live music, and sip a drink. There is scant lighting but it suits the atmosphere to a tee. I got one of their whiskey specials with rye, malort, and another bitter element resulting in a boozy, forward sipper. The bartenders accommodate your palate and offer great suggestions. Their happy hour goes until 7 PM, which is far better than many places around! Definitely stop by if you are looking for a place with good drinks and an atmosphere unlike others further down the road. read more

This is the cutest little speakeasy- maybe because I am obsessed with the entrance. We were at another bar (I won't name names) and asked the bouncer outside which bar is a must see in Austin, and he suggested this place. He told us the code that needed to be shared when we got there, but I think we all forgot it by the time we got there (or I forgot that we shared it when we got there). Anyhow, it's super nondescript and if you walk too fast, you'll walk right by it. The best part of the place is the bookcase entrance! So precious! Luckily it wasn't crowded and I was able to ask the bartender to customize a drink for me and he did. I like whiskey & ginger ale and so many times, that's exactly what they give me, even when I ask them to be creative. But the bartender here did just what I asked. I didn't even realize my first drink was finished and got a 2nd. There are a few booths which allow for more of an intimate feel of the place. Great place, great vibe, great bartenders. read more

Awesome hidden location. Actually found it on yelp. It is right around the corner of 6th street and is a hostel. You pass right by It and don't even notice. I recommend you stop in. We came on a Sunday and it was pretty dead but still great. The bar was nice and the bartender was legit. Told him I wanted something with vodka and he made me an awesome drink. Real bar tenders. We went around 11 on the night of Austin pride, so it was absolutely packed. I'm sure if you like that kind of scene, it would be really fun, but we were looking for something a little more relaxed and casual. The entrance hidden behind the bookcase is cute, but it doesn't really feel like a true speakeasy. Someone is sitting outside the hostel checking IDs, and there's an obvious handle on the door, as well as a constant stream of people going in and out. The music was very loud and it was almost too crowded to move. The atmosphere inside looked like it would have been very inviting on a quieter night, with big leather booths along the back wall, and nice older style drinks. However, it was so hectic inside that we waited for about ten minutes before giving up without ordering anything. read more

My boyfriend and i stopped here on our first night in Austin. I found out about this place online. When went on a Thursday night and there was live music and great tasting cocktails. I haven't lived in Austin for many years so when my siblings and I are visiting and want to go out, we turn to yelp. Based on reviews, we first tried to head to CU29 Cocktail bar which is block away from Firehouse - it was a little pretentious and the vibe we got from the single employee was that we were disturbing them. We left right away and walked over to Firehouse. Best. Decision. Ever. Firehouse was great. The welcome was warm, the bartender was friendly and cool, the drinks were good and it was just a really awesome experience overall. KEEP THE DANG DOOR CLOSED. 90% of the fun here is bringing your friends here and sliding the "secret passageway". So when the door is already left half open it takes away from the experience. I wish the staff here cared more about keeping the door shut when you're entering. Other than the decor this place is just a regular bar with expensive cocktails. It gets overly crowded and noisy and the "speakeasy" atmosphere gets lost in it. Very unique spot. Not only is the entrance a sliding bookshelf which is awesome in and of itself but the bookshelf is a lending library! I knew I would love it here before I even went inside. The inside is a cozy, dimly lit lounge. Intimate setting and good cocktails. The bartender was gracious with his recommendations and I tried the "bee's knees" which was a good choice. Cool, a bar behind a bookshelf. Super unique, right? Anyway, I came here on a Thursday night after the bouncer at Floppy Disk suggested we get a drink with Bradley at Firehouse to get the code. We got two drinks. One was a terrible Negroni that was at least 90% Campari. Anyway, Bradley comes over and tells us to have a drink and treat our bartender well and then we'll get the code as we leave. The two drinks run $21 and I leave $5 on the bar. We drink our drinks and wait until Bradley comes over and says, "I'm not the only one with the code and you're not doing a good job of getting it." Fed up, we decide to give out bartender the tip and say we are headed out. I asked him if he had the code and he said he did not. At this point, we were too annoyed to even care. The bartender and Bradley had a nice laugh at our expense. Complete ripoff that feels like you are being conned. Steer clear. read more

This is a place you might want to avoid on a late Saturday evening, it becomes overly-crowded. Outside of that, its a great bar with well versed Mixologist's. After you slide through the hidden bookcase, you'll step into a medium-sized room with small stage and large bar. The venue is bar service only. So you're required to venture up to the counter and place your order, possibly over the shoulder of another patron. They do have limited snacks and tidbits. If you're in the search of a bar and conversation, this is the place. But once the crowd flows in, that seat you're occupying might have a few other people standing at your side. This place would be a five star in my book, if they managed the crowd better and offered table service in some of the seating areas. But that's just my opinion. :) read more

I love me a cool speakeasy! This was the first stop of our girls night out. We read that it was a speakeasy and there was a secret entrance... we definitely took some time to figure it out. If I recall correctly, the entrance was like.. next to a hostel's front desk or something. Somehow, we got in and went down to the bar. It wasn't too crowded when we got there, so we were able to get a table. I think there was a small stage, but no act when we were there. I remember ordering a Girl Scout Thin Mint drink (since.. we were old Girl Scout friends haha). It tasted more licorice than mint, so it wasn't really that good to me :[ We all tried each others' drinks, and in general, they were pretty good. If you walk into an unassuming vestibule with a front desk and a person sitting by a bookshelf, you've found it. They do give it away a bit by listing specials on a chalkboard next to the bookshelf. They have a great cocktail list, from which I ordered a delicious daiquiri (and no, not the frozen strawberry kind). The bartender made our drinks with a little flair, which was interesting to watch. Came here to see some of the comedy shows last night and was kicked out for laughing too loud? My friend and I were sitting in the back where there are just bar stools and we would say to each other "this person is really funny" or we would talk about getting another beer in between the shows when no one was on stage. When I was outside talking to the "comedian" after I was kicked out about what I did wrong, he said "we could just hear you laughing loudly." I'm sorry, isn't this a comedy show where you're supposed to fucking laugh?? How the hell do I tame my natural laugh??? There was a couple who had something to say to every comment that was being made and they were not kicked out. I'm so confused about how this place is ran and what type of people you hire. If you're gonna hire someone to keep the hecklers down then do that and don't kick someone out for "laughing too loud." If you're thinking of coming here, please don't. There are way better speakeasy's in Austin, don't spend your money here read more

Such a cool little spot!! A must stop in Austin. When you enter, you walk through a sliding door/bookcase. The smell is very distinct, it smells like an old, wet, underground hidden dive bar and you can imagine what it must have been like hiding out during prohibition. My drink was good. The music playing was fun. It's a place you can hangout with friends for awhile. Some guy was burning sage at one point to cover up the "old, wet" smell but honestly, that smell is part of the charm! Firehouse Lounge, you are a very cool place and I'm sad I only got to see you in the daytime. My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon to escape from the heat, and try something new. Located in a hostel, right behind a "secret" door, you enter a speakeasy type bar with a small stage and plenty of seating. As it was the afternoon, this place was empty save for one or two guests, but I can see this fitting maybe 30-50 people. They had happy hours available, which saved our budget a bit since we were completely obsessed with one of their cocktails! We ordered maybe 6 or 7 each. I believe it was the Charo's Kick. The bartender was so nice, and very attentive to us. I know it wasn't busy, but some bartenders would just be in the back on their phones, or not care to check in. Not ours! He was very friendly, and when we asked him questions about where to go in Austin, he was super informative and helpful. We even headed over to one of his recommended bbq spots (Cooper's!) after.
