Pretty good cajun food for Austin. It's setup on the east side next to Dai due, parking is kind of a hassle so you may need to park in the nearby neighborhood. Everything is counter service so you'll order your entire meal at the counter along with drinks, the cashier will give you a number and the service staff will bring your items to your table. My friend and I ordered several different items on the menu to try out, we got the etouffee, red beans and rice, and a mushroom salad. My favorite out of those items was the mushroom salad with vinagarette dressing, who doesn't love mushrooms and some greens! The etouffee was rich and savory with what i believe was their rotating protein of the week. Can't really go wrong with red beans and rice, these are like an upgraded popeyes version. To end the meal we tried their beignets which weren't stellar but reminded me more of a fried donut with some powdered sugar sprinkled on top. There are two sides--one focused on drinks and the other on food. It's not really full-service dining, as you don't order from your table. Instead, you order at the counter and they'll bring everything out to you. For my partner and I, we shared a Fried Shrimp Po Boy, the Shrimp & Grits, the Gumbo, and ended with Fried Bread Pudding. Like many reviews have stated, the dishes were definitely a bit more salty compared to the traditional Cajun flavors I know and love. Just because there's more salt does NOT mean more flavor! My husband and I went to Dai Due for our anniversary and were a little disappointed at the lack of cocktails so we decided to check out Vic and Als for a little post dinner drink! The vibe is easy going and friendly and I love how they make most of their mixers/bitters/etc! It was fun looking at all the different labels and both bartenders were happy to talk about the various items. I had fun explaining to my husband that the big jar of cochineal on the counter were dried bugs lol!! Apparently they use it to dye their aperol- cool! I also was curious about the Szechuan amaro I saw and the bartender let me try just a teensy bit of it with the warning that it will make your tongue go numb (which it totally did! XD). The drinks were great, I got an espresso martini which was served in an adorable little jar and was super tasty, not syrupy sweet and I loved the (homemade) pecan bitters. I cannot recommend this place enough especially after their renovation cause ever since then, I feel that eating there is an even better experience. Adorned with very kitschy and atmsopheric interior decor (my favorite are the inexplicable chairs on the walls), the restaurant is a great vibe. They also got their seating process down to a science. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted and given your table number. Before going to your table, you can get an amazing craft cocktail at the bar. I am a huge fan of the sabine pass which is their cucumber cocktail and it is perfection. Then you order your food at the register and their rotating menu is something to behold. For this specific trip, we got the crawfish jambalaya, blackened catfish on rice, and the interesting eggplant parmesean. All were hits, not a single miss. This place knows how to do seasoning as any bite you take, you're hit with an explosive array of herbs and spices that give you the kick you need to keep biting and savor every taste. We did not see an option to make a reservation and just showed up around 1 pm on a Saturday for brunch. The food was absolutely amazing. Our group ordered the red beans and rice, collard greens Benedict, sweet potato chorizo hash, salad, and gumbo. Every dish was incredibly tasty, fresh, and well prepared. No misses at all, and it is the kind of food you keep talking about after you leave. A few things to note about the experience. We were asked to put a card down immediately, which felt a little uncomfortable, especially for a group of six, and you get assigned a table, but there's no table service. Ordering is also a bit confusing since you have to go to two separate areas for food and drinks. We were not given an itemized receipt, which made splitting the bill pretty difficult. The atmosphere was super cute, cozy and inviting, and the decor was beautiful. There's seating in the front and back, though if you sit in the front you'll hear more of the noise from people coming/going, cars on the street, and some bursts of cold air. Parking is also something to be aware of. Do not park in the nearby lots unless they are clearly marked for Vic & Al's, as towing seems common (we saw people standing outside on the corner asking if "our cars got towed like theirs"). There is free street parking on some of the surrounding roads. We parked on Walnut Street and walked about 5-10 minutes. I got the breakfast hash topped with an egg and bits of sausage, potatoes, bell peppers, corn and a sauce that was full of flavor. I had an impromptu friend gathering here last week in the evening and I really enjoyed how the bar is on one side and kitchen is on the other side. However, both service teams catered to all. I'm in my mocktail phase again and the drink was made with no difficulty and to my surprise half of the cost! My friends and I all decided to get one of each entree so that we can try everything. The big stand outs for me were the beignets (not pictured) and the salad that comes with the blackened catfish dish. Every portion is reasonably sized for the price and easily shared. I feel like everything was a little bit on the saltier end maybe because this is Cajun food and it is known to be spice heavy . Water was not very accessible. Although everyone was friendly to kids(toddlers and infants being loud and having personal food items) the menu is not kid friendly and there are no children furniture. We were greeted pretty immediately by our server, who walked us through the different menu options. The place was pretty empty, so there was no wait in getting seated. Blackened Catfish ($18, 4.5/5) - Features blackened catfish on a bed of sassafras rice and black eyed peas, topped with cajun aioli, pickled onions, garnish - The catfish was melt in your mouth soft, and all the different ingredients together create a dish that's both fresh and full of depth. - The pickled onions provide a nice tartness that cuts through the slightly heavier flavor of the catfish and aioli. In the past, had tried Vic & Al's shrimp & grits and gumbo before (both 3/5) - definitely prefer the blackened catfish to those dishes in terms of flavor profile and price vs. portion size. Stumble upon this place while searching for food recommendations in the area. Saw a few people mention this place and thought the concept was cool. When you enter someone meets you out the door so you can put your card on file. They then guide you through the whole experience from ordering and the concepts of the restaurant. Next day we direct you to the bar so you can place your drink order. I got something that was their take on a piña colada. Wasn't my favorite drink ever but also wasn't bad after ordering at the bar. You then go to the next stop to order your food. Definitely would come earlier than later because they sell out. I could see them changing the items on the menu while standing in line to order. Once you order, they give you a table marker and you find your seat. There were plenty of tables in the main dining area and they also had some tables outside and in the front. I got the red wings and chicken and biscuit. I absolutely loved the red beans and rice and would make the drive back down to Austin to get them again. One of the things I like about Vic & Al's is the changing entree menu. The entree selections change on a daily basis. If you look at it a few days before heading over, be sure to check it out the day of for any changes. Ordering is sort of European bar/counter-style. Everything kind of happens in steps. The space is shabby chic meets farmhouse meets NOLA meets Austin. It's a total vibe. The food is pretty amazing. The beignets are always spot on. If you didn't know better, you'd think you were in NOLA biting into one. My favorite dish has to be their version of chicken and waffles, which is chicken and beignets! Incredible incredible incredible. I had a date last night here and I was absolutely blown away with the service, the food, and the ambiance. First things first, you wait in line to order at the counter where they are more than willing to walk you through the specials. Once you've done that, you'll be sent over to the bar to order any libations of your choosing before you settle in at a table. Note, drinks include housemade syrups, so definitely go for one if you're on the fence! Attitudes from the staff were on 100 which was so so refreshing. Outstanding food. Gumbo had a very unique flavor and was packed with meat, veggies and rice. Nice small size too so you can try other things. Also got this stuffed meat pastry thing which i thought was pretty good but a little bready. Red beans and rice was great, but the potato salad was just your average potato salad. Can't got wrong with Vic and Al's. There ingredients are super fresh and flavorful! I also make my own fish bowl and it's delicious. Cocktails are fantastic too. Only tough part is parking. They share a lot with Dai Due and it's very small. Highly recommend making a reservation or ordering take out. It can get packed quick. read more

Amazing brunch spot, southern comfort food. Service was amazing, the guys were so attentive, and welcoming. The decor was sweet and cozy, definitely recommend this spot. Only caveat, is food is southern style - so not many healthy options on the menu. read more
