I had 6 quotes. 5 from plumbers. They all said they would have to destroy my finished basement (holes every 3 feet to run the gas lines) and the cost was around $6K. Just for running the lines. Then I talked to Tracy at Williams Services. She had cleaned my gas fireplace at my last house (excellent job and amazing expert). I didn't know her company could run gas lines too. He was clearly knowledgeable and experienced. Performed a full diagnostic and a very thorough service -- important for a gas appliance. Not only brought the fireplace back into original working condition, but went to some trouble to remove battery corrosion from remote control receiver and save the cost of a new one. That was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Amazing Flame isn't cheap but the expertise and value are there.

I had a drafty fireplace and they made several recommendations of repairs, explaining the benefits of each and let me decide on what to do based on my budget and priorities. They ended up installing a damper at the top of my chimney, redoing the chimney crown and adding insulation cement to the inside of my firebox. I told them I needed to leave within 2 hours and they were done with 15 minutes to spare. The pricing was also about as good a quote as I had gotten from anyone. These guys seem as good as it gets.

I booked an appointment with Winston's chimney service for a sweep of my chimney. I have a wood…read morestove insert which complicates the process but Winston's assured me that they can clean it, no problem. I had to wait over two weeks for an appointment, but when the day finally came the team came within the appointment window (towards the end, but with a few minutes to space). I asked for them to sweep the chimney and provide an estimate to have the wood stove insert removed and our fireplace converted to a standard fireplace. The sweep probably knows what he's talking about and what he sees, but after a few minutes he described in a disjointed manner all of the potential problems with a brick chimney. He was not able to convey exactly the state of my chimney nor able to show me photos of the current state. It felt like someone trying to dance around showing what is really going on with the plan to upsell loads of work, whether necessary or not. After an hour or so he said he would get me an estimate by the end of the day. The estimate arrived, it did not include the one thing I had asked for, the price to remove the insert and convert it to a standard fireplace. It did include $20k worth of major work that I have no idea is founded or excessive. In the end, I don't even know if they swept the chimney, I have a sneaking suspicion they did not. I did not receive an invoice nor receipt for a sweep, which was the primary visit for the service call. Maybe we need that work, I truly cannot say that I have any confidence in their assessment nor appetite for that scale of work without better communication and evidence.
