This review is frankly a little overdue, but they deserved it. We had them inspect our chimney because it had been badly neglected by previous ownership. Because I was new to chimneys I had a second inspection done. Everything Winston found was accurate. There was no upsell or exaggeration. They provided thorough photographs and explanations of everything they found. Their pricing was competitive with other quotes in the area (and better than one or two popular companies whose name I won't mention but whose quotes were unjustifiably higher). We ended up using a different company for the work but that was mostly because they had availability a little sooner and a comparable quote; it was not a reflection at all on Winston. If I ever broke up with my current company Winston would likely be my first call. read more

This summer, I had a pulling chimney and the company who inspected the chimney recommended replacement to the shoulder. Our home inspector got us in touch with Ryan, who dug through the inspection report on his own time .After coming to visit and take a look for himself, explained different options, focusing on one that was suitable for the needs we communicated. He also showed a lot of respect for the chimney inspector at the other company, but explained how the companies have a different focus and do projects a bit differently. The work they did is beautiful. More important than that though, whenever I've contacted them with questions, they've been super clear and responsive. Let me start by saying the past couple days have been stressful for me. I had my house CO alarm going off and had gas company and HVAC(shout out to Reddick and Sons as well) come out and troubleshoot the issue as there is a small amount of CO coming out of the vents(peak at 26 with gas company but 68 with my CO alarm). They suggested since there is no certainty that its a furnace issue to have the chimney/b-vent checked by chimney professional to make sure its venting properly as that would be cheaper than start messing/replacing the furnace. I was referred to Winston's Chimney Services and recommended we keep our heater off in the meantime. Ryan Hall came in the same day I called Winston for emergency troubleshooting as I don't have heat in the house, he immediately pointed out some issues with my current set up and how its not up to code. The double-wall pipe is also past its lifespan as its the original from the house and suggested replacing it as well. He provided me a detailed report with pictures and what they recommended to resolve the issue. He also pointed out the options for payment as well as financing as I don't expect this kind of expense out of nowhere. I decided to proceed and was scheduled to get it done the next day. Daniel Flores and his crew came the next day on time and are very professional and hard working. They set up the expectation of what they will do and worked on it diligently. They are quick and clean and made sure they covered anything that might get any dirt from their work. They informed me they will need to cut a hole in the wall to remove the old pipe and provided me options. What's nice about this is that the contract stays that if they do need to cut a hole, that this would need to be put back by a different company as they don't do that but Daniel took his time to put the cut hole back so that it's not just a huge hole in the wall and all I need to do is put some sparkling and paint over it. They did not have to do that but they went above and beyond and cleaned everything before they left. I just tested the heater and used CO detector and did not get anything unlike before. This entire process only took 3 days(could have taken 2 days if I accepted right away). Overall, I recommend this company 100% and would use them again for any other services they offer in the future read more

I'm not going to give my opinion. I am only going to report the facts. I live in a townhouse in Braemar community in Prince William County. I hired Winston's to service my gas fireplace. The technician said that he would not service it because it was badly deteriorated and unsafe and that he could not bring it up to serviceable condition. He said the unit would need to be completely replaced to be safe. Charged me for this diagnosis: $189. [If he had done the service, it would have cost just under $500.]. Winston's quote for replacing the unit: $13,900. One week later, I hired another company to look at my fireplace. I did not tell the second company that it had been looked at previously. The technician serviced it, cleaned it, tested it for safety. It works perfectly. I asked about internal deterioration. The tech said he saw nothing like that, said that the unit has many years of use ahead. Service fee charged by the second company: $269. These are the facts. Make of them what you will. read more

As with other over-estimating/charging reviews, Winston's is trying to scam an elderly couple who requested a chimney inspection to ensure the fireplace is in good working condition prior to the holidays. After an inspection on 20 November 2018, Jeff @ Winston's provided a VERBAL quote of $2600 to perform the necessary inside and outside repairs. On 20 December 2018, the inside fireplace moisture issue repair work commenced after a 50% deposit of $1300 with an agreement to return in warmer weather to perform the outside masonry repairs. On 4 March, the Winston crew performed the outside chimney masonry work and Daniel C presented a bill of $2558....$1258 over the estimate...what happened to the $2600 quote with a balance of $1300? On 15 March, an unsigned letter from Winston's dtd 7 March was received stating the balance due is $2558 and mentions a "proposal provided prior to commencement of job."....there is no proposal, quote or signed contract. read more

We first had Power Wash Plus clean our aluminum sides home about three years ago and was well pleased. We had them come back this year to wash the home, our concrete driveway, and our Trex deck. Making an appointment is easy, and the office is absolutely the best when returning calls and scheduling. After waiting for a service technician to come out to perform a gas fireplace cleaning and chimney inspection for 3 weeks the morning of the appointment Winstons called me to say that their tech called in sick and they cannot come for another 4 weeks!!!! Like it's totally normal to push appointments back by a month because they have unreliable staff. They should have found a way to provide an appointment sooner after having waited for this one so long. No other alternatives were offered. We had Winston's come out and inspect the fireplace in a home we bought last year. We know next to nothing about fireplaces, but it looked in fair condition to us at face value. After inspecting, they gave us a laundry list of repairs we would need that amount to ripping out the entire fireplace, chimney and all, and replacing it ... to the tune of about $8,000. We were stunned and extremely disappointed. Cut to a couple of months later when we see some reviews stating that they over-quote people for repairs. We decide to get a few second opinions. The verdict: everyone else who came to look said our fireplace is in pristine condition -- no tiles cracked, no soot buildup at all, no need to replace anything. They all quoted us for preventive repair work on the brick chimney for about $1,000 but said it was no rush and could be done any time in the next year and that we can safely have fires now. We missed out on two (cold) months of fireplace use and were very stressed out about money because of the garbage quote these people gave us. Don't trust them. read more

Poor workmanship and over priced, for the masonry work they just filled in with mortar where bricks were missing or broken, I could of rented scaffolding cheaper and the liner they used cost less than $1500 to purchase charged me over $5300. Don't think they put water proof repellant on because mortar was not dried before they left and motar should be dried before applying. Winston's did a great job with our recent chimney project! We called them for cleaning and inspection for a chimney on a recently purchased home. The inspection revealed a lot of damage in our fireplace and HVAC chimney. Chris was extremely thorough in explaining to us the details of the repair suggestions, as well as sharing pictures so we could see the damage ourselves. He helped us navigate what to prioritize for the upcoming winter since it was expensive to do all at once and was transparent in each repair's pricing. A. MA. ZING service. I never thought I would say that about chimney repairs! Originally had them come out to sweep the chimney and clean the firebox, but they told me that it really didn't need to be done; it looked clean. I loved the honesty. I then offered for them to provide me an estimate for masonry repairs on the chimney outside. They agreed, took photos that they showed me of the repairs needed, and showed me where water was getting in causing the awful smell we had been getting. They provided an estimate via email and detailed out our options. The price for everything was less than another contractor who gave us an estimate 4 years ago, and theirs wasn't as comprehensive! On repair day Daniel C and Kevin came out right on time. They were very professional and pleasant throughout the repairs. When they were done, they let me know and showed me some plastic that they left on the crown - they said it would prevent it from drying out too fast. They encouraged me to contact the office for all the photos (before and after) - and I've included a couple in this post so you can see for yourself. Right after they left, a rainstorm came with gusts of wind, and I was sure the plastic would have blown away, but it stayed put! A couple of days later, they came back and took the plastic away. Unfortunately, I had to contact Winston's in March 2020 for work that was completed in 2014, was subpar. Upon receiving my call, Winston's immediately dispatched one of their best crews to my house to resolve the venting issue that was not up to code. The project was tasked to Melvin Castaned and the crew. Melvin Castaned is an exceptional worker (mastered his craft), has a professional demeanor (yet very kind), honest, pays very close attention to detail, goes above and beyond his call of duty. I cannot sing Melvin's praises enough. Melvin is definitely an asset to Winston's, for this reason alone, I will use Winston's again in the future. More importantly, I was very happy and pleased with the end product. Melvin and his colleagues placed drop clothes on the floors/carpet in the areas that they were working; Melvin recapped the chimney to perfection (I might add); and replaced the pipes in the utility room that is now up to code. No show to the appointment! No call or anything! Don't even bother asking for a quote unless you can be at your house for the early morning appointment. I made an appointment for 2pm, because I could not get out of work any earlier. Apparently between 9am and 11am I had two missed calls and two emails asking to make my appointment earlier. I called the company 45 minutes prior to my appointment window (which was 2-4pm) to CONFIRM I had not been dropped from the appointment. They said they would call the tech to confirm. I recieved a call back saying my tech would be at my house between 2pm and 4pm. I thought, "Cool!" Not cool. At 4:30pm I called to see where my tech was and was told that since he didn't have a "noon" appointment, he didn't go to his 2pm appointment. WHAT. And when they rebooked my appointment (which I decided to cancel) it HAD to be a noon appointment or "this would happen again". I'm so glad my time meant nothing to them other than an "I'm sorry". read more

Winston Chimney Service helps to define old-school excellence. They do chimneys, period. But in a way that completely satisfies -- both the issue presented, and the customer they serve. We first heard about Winston Chimney Service through our Freedom property manager, who hired them to provide due diligence on our fireplace chimney flue (we later used that info to convert our fireplace to a gas-log unit). Most immediately, we had problem with our other flue, for our gas furnace. Our furnace kept cutting out, and had to be manually reset each time. We had two furnace professionals (including Richards Heat and Air) diagnose the furnace as fully functional, but requiring better drafting up the flue, i.e. they both diagnosed the problem having to do with our flue (which dated back seventy years). Each said the issue had to be looked at by a chimney service. I took the initiative to go back to our earlier association with Winston, who came promptly when called. They provided a full diagnosis (for a fee, which could be applied as a credit towards a follow-on job). The masonry joins between the terracotta blocks had decayed over time, providing multiple ways for the gases to escape, and precluding a clean upward path. The masonry chimney exhaust system of the furnace would overheat, trip, and shut down the furnace. The illustration was like attempting to suck liquids up a straw that had multiple slits in it -- the suction simply doesn't work. The solution was a chimney liner. We contracted with Winston. They provided excellent work. The team was professional, very efficient and pleasant to interact with. They completely replaced the ductwork from the furnace and the gas water heater, installed the liner up the flue, remade the chimney apron and provide a flue cap, all for a very reasonable fee. The masonry chimney exhaust system was removed, and they helpfully explained the reasons for that. We are pleased with their work. Our only regret is that we had not used their services a few years ago, when the furnace cut-out issues were first manifest. That is a live-and-learn scenario, which we hope other homeowners of older houses can learn from. read more

It did take a few weeks for the materials to come in but that's not their fault and they did set expectations with us about the delay. They were quick and efficient. I recently had my crown and a half chimney rebuilt by Winstons Chimney Service. The team I worked with was Ivan, Ever and Ernesto. They were a great team. I found them to be efficient and skilled. They did a great job matching the new bricks to the original ones. I worked more closely with Ivan. He was great about calling me every morning and giving me their estimated arrival time. He also was great about making sure I was happy with the work. He took time to explain what they were doing. He showed me how to work the chimney damper and everything.
