We were very happy with this business when we used them this past winter to replace our broken water heater and replace our HVAC and water softener as well. The staff were incredibly good at communicating and were very professional. I was also happy with how good they were at cleaning up after themselves, with their willingness to come back and fix any thing (or remove anything) forgotten or left behind, and with their service when they returned to set up the air conditioning in the spring and when they cleaned our ducts. We had a Hot Water tank fail on us 6 1/2 years after install (by another company). I spoke with Sandi and she was incredibly amazing to deal with. She got back to me during one of the busiest weeks of a crazy heatwave. She identified that it was still under warranty even though the original company claimed it was not. She went above and beyond and saved me over $1,000 in unnecessary costs. I highly recommend this sort of professional customer service and will make sure they are my first recommendation and go to for anything Heating or cooling related. Our furnace's blower fan had to be replaced a couple years ago. First Call did a great job replacing it and had it up and running in no time. Unfortunately the fan must have been defective as the fan seized up after just 18 months. Spoke with Dan the service manager and even though it was outside of warranty on the part, he did what he could in terms of service cost and stood behind the work that had been completed. Very impressed, would recommend to anyone experiencing furnace issues. read more

Update Feb 2, 2013 They did come by today and both men where very polite and professional. They did a great job and were in and out fairly quick because we have a small bungalow. Other then the problem with their fleet I have to say that is understandable and I would use them again. Previous Comment: This company had a Groupon in the fall for duct cleaning. We bought it and booked for October. They left us a voice mail to cancel. We left a message to rebook and asked if they would honor the Groupon we didn't hear from them for a week. So we contacted Groupon for a refund and then First Call called us back and booked for December. Well two days before we were scheduled they called us to reschedule for February. I would not recommend them at all. I am not sure if they are trying to avoid us because of the Groupon or if they really are that bad to deal with either way it is no good. Maybe in the summer we'll get our ducts cleaned but for now we will have to wait. read more

I had a furnace diagnosis done. $250. PROS: neat, clean, polite, on time CONS: expensive, pricing unclear, slow, charged labour rates to order parts and check on warranty, felt very sketchy. I hired this company based on reviews from homestars site but later discovered the site is not considered to be very reputable. I thought the cost was $109 for the diagnosis but that is the cost to show up. Then they charge $129 per hour labour. I wouldn't have hired then if I understood that. However, even though they were unclear, I thought the misunderstanding was reasonable (though disappointing). The tech took the entire hour to "diagnose" the problem with 20 minutes of that hour spent in his vehicle.....checking on the warranty coverage. I don't think that this is legitimate part of the labour fee. Certainly the company I eventually hired didn't charge me labour for those things. The second thing about the length of the diagnosis (exactly one hour), is that I knew what the problem was, I knew the error codes and told the tech. I needed the Hvac certified diagnosis to get the warranty. It's very simple issue to diagnose....I could appreciate that there are some standard best practices and extras to check to see if there maybe additional problems but it really shouldn't have taken more than 30 minutes at the absolute most (with all the extras)! The third thing I was disappointed about was I told the company before coming was that it was a warranty job and I wanted the job under warranty. I was VERY CLEAR about this. I mentioned it twice on the phone and once by email. They told me after they had completed the diagnosis and I had paid the bill that they would offset my bill by the warranty amount but wouldn't do the job for the amount provided under the warranty (100% parts and labour). To be fair, I dealt with three other companies and the warranty amount provided is less than market rates in Edmonton. One company even denied there was a warranty. It is not popular. The warranty company warned me about this and I warned First Call. If they had been up front and honest that they would charge me extra, I would not have hired them and I felt taken advantage of. It seemed dishonest to me to say you will accept warranty work but then charge the client extra. Fourth, I was rather aghast when the tech told me I should appreciate their willingness to offset the warranty because some companies will submit warranty claims without telling the homeowners and pocket it as profit.......whaaaaaaaattttt? I'm giving this place two stars rather than one because I think they may have been poorly represented by this employee. Their pricing is still higher than average but they are readily available. So if you need something done quickly, they can likely accommodate you without having to pay their overtime rate. I would suggest that you stay with them while working to insure you are charged for genuine labour. I would also make sure you agree up front that "truck time" is not "labour". read more

I had a furnace break down early last year, the first Tech they sent mis-diagnosed the problem, I brought this up and they sent out a different Tech that properly diagnosed and fixed the problem. There was no charge for the error they made and after a few months I received a rebate for the parts that were replaced that were still under warranty. Though they may be a bit pricey, I believe that you get what you pay for. Since the work was done for the price quoted to me and within the timeline I was given, I am very happy with First Call and will use them again. read more

Like the previous reviewer I booked First Call in late 2012 - the first time they rescheduled, the second time their van broke down, the third time they rescheduled because they were too busy... This went beyond the dates of their offer. I'm too busy to chase these guys and finally when I got around to it now (it's October 2013) they say they'll only take cash value and no discount because it's too late. No notice, no warning, no nothing. Groupon says it's up to FirstCall on what to do so I'm screwed. They want to clean the furnace AND the ducts and charge per duct so what was going to be an $50-70 spend is now going to be a $150+ spend. Great way to run a business - reschedule a customer 3 times then don't warn them when you're running out of time to reschedule. read more

First Call came by our neighbourhood a knowing the age of the homes and that we were all 'due' to need replacement. I contacted them and they were very helpful - easily set up a convenient time to discuss and arrange the service at a very reasonable price. When the day came for the replacement they were neat, clean, and professional. They corrected some piping that had been done poorly by the water heater folks several years previously. The new furnace that was delivered had been damaged but they couldn't tell until it was in the basement and they started unpacking it. First Call immediately got the supplier to send out a new one. I had my new furnace and a cleaned up basement before 5:00 that day. I would recommend them to anyone asking. In fact, I just called them to service my AC and my gas fireplace. read more

Called this company to install a furnace blower. 20 year old kid did the work slowly, then pulls the typical trick of "locking off" the furnace, basically a scam saying that your furnace is emitting dangerous levels of CO2 and needs replacing. 3 inspections later by Atco and the furnace is still perfect. Zero CO2. This company saw that I lived in a nice but older house and tried to rip me off thousands for new, not-needed furnaces. A large company with expensive trucks and overhead, and they pay for it with tactics like this. read more

I don't know who gave this company the testimonies they post on their website. I used their "services", to use the term very loosely, three years ago. My furnace would start, but shut itself off immediately, which is a classic sign of dirty ignitor and thermocouples (I know it now, but not being a furnace repairman, I did not know then). They convinced me that the furnace needed a new control board. When it is -30 outdoors, you don't argue. They had to search the internet to find out how to install the control board (one man on the internet and the other following instruction). $2400 later, they were gone and the furnace had the same problem. When I called to report the problem, they were more concerned about getting paid for their ride over to fix a problem they had charged an arm and a leg to fix, but had not fixed. I called another company who sent a repairman. $50 dollars later he had cleaned the thermocouples and ignitor, checked the system and had fixed the problem. First Call became Last Call in my book. They don't know the meaning of the word professional. They don't take responsibility for their screw-up and incompetence. read more
