But, the business employs the salesperson, so the responsibility does lie with the business. Let me start out by saying that I live in Lexington. It's easier for me to buy from a business in Lexington. It's easier for me to get my car serviced in Lexington. So, I always try to work with Lexington businesses first because that's in my best interest. Enter the salesperson John at Don Franklin Nissan. John rode along for the test drive. Guy seemed likeable enough. I decide I am interested in the vehicle, but I wanted to compare prices elsewhere. John at Don Franklin Nissan says he has to have MSRP for the vehicle, nothing less, nothing more. If that's what you gotta have, that's what you gotta have. I call John at Don Franklin Nissan a couple days later. I let him know that they have a vehicle with the same options at a competitor for thousands less, and I was wondering if he could match it. Again, it's easier for me to buy in Lexington. He goes on to tell me that the competitor is factoring in all kinds of rebates and such that I would not be eligible for. I'm thinking ok, maybe John at Don Franklin Nissan is right, but I might as well go and check. The competitor came in at a price between $3,000 and $4,000 less (between 10 and 15%) than what John at Don Franklin Nissan said he had to have. I'm ok with that, but clearly in my own financial interest I'm going to go with the competitor. I gave John at Don Franklin Nissan an opportunity to earn my business, he did not, and there you go. About a week after my purchase John at Don Franklin Nissan calls me and asks me to come in, bring the wife, and test drive the vehicle again. I start to explain that I had purchased a vehicle elsewhere and John at Don Franklin Nissan immediately hangs up the phone on me. I was not rude with him. I was not critical of his business. Heck, I didn't have time to be. As soon as I mentioned the competitor, he cuts me off by ending the call. That's not professional. That's not good business. Now, let's think about how John at Don Franklin Nissan could have handled this. How about: "Sorry I couldn't earn your business this time, but I hope you will consider us in the future." "I'm happy you got the car you wanted at the price you wanted, and if you give me a shot next time you're in the market for a vehicle, we will try harder to earn your business." "I wish we could have gotten you in this car, but if you know of anyone else who is in the market for a car, please consider sending them our way." Notice that none of these responses, which just came to me in the moment that I am writing this, involved hanging up on someone mid-sentence. It was insulting, unprofessional, and unnecessary. And it makes me not want to do business with any Don Franklin dealership. John at Don Franklin Nissan could, quite frankly, use some Chick-fil-A customer service training. I'm not even in the sales business, but I do understand that the business is all about relationships. John at Don Franklin Nissan severed mine.

Lexington Carmax is similar to Lexington itself...a less vibrant, less efficient version of its…read moreolder cousins in other cities. Carmax itself is a wonderful company that I have dealt with many times. The ability to browse the lot and enter any car is really helpful, and the fact that the salespeople don't pressure you is amazing. However, Lexington kind of drops the ball beyond that. First of all, the location isn't ideal. It's insular, and far from any highways. This means when you test drive a car, you don't get any experience driving over 45 mph, so you never get a feel for how the car handles at higher speeds. This isn't something that can be helped, and is one of the design flaws of the city itself if we're being honest. However, something that can be changed is the length of the test drive route. It was disappointingly short, and I ended my drive feeling like I hadn't gotten to know the car at all. Beyond geography, the sales staff that I worked with in Lexington were a little less helpful and personable than staff at other locations. They were unable to find a car in the system that was on the website (what? Maybe they had a good reason like the website is slow to reflect inventory, but nothing was ever explained to me other than "I can't find it"), and they were generally slower and less helpful than I have experienced before. I placed a hold on a car, then found a better one elsewhere and forgot to tell the salesman that I had been working with. It took me a couple of days to realize that he had neglected to follow up with me and try to get a sale before the hold ran out! For some this may be a good thing, but I was unimpressed. Overall, I would recommend the Carmax company to anyone. But, more specifically, I would urge anyone in central Kentucky to try and make the journey to Louisville if you can. The staff is more attentive, the lot is much bigger with a wider selection, the location is right by the interstate, and the test drive route is much longer. Sorry, Lexington, but sometimes mid-size city charm just doesn't cut it.
