I called on Father's Day Sunday morning requesting an appointment. The person I spoke to said to come at 2pm same day. Because my hair was so badly damaged from a previous color that I just started recovering without the breakage, I decided to show up to the shop to let them see my hair first and to get options for a style. What I wanted were cornrows but really wasn't sure if my hair was too short, which it did turn out to be too short. The ladies recommended braids and to come back at 2pm. I left and received a call to come in within an hour after me leaving. I was excited. Kadi, took on the challenge of braiding my hair and when I tell you she did nothing short of a miracle. I was 110% satisfied with the style and the time it took. I loved the look, the size and the care she showed to me. All the ladies here at this braidery do amazing work. On a vacation with my girl , just wanted to get hair hair all done and looking special, i let her pick the place and we came to First Choice and its so unfortunate and regrettable that we came here , from the photos you can see why im upset , like cmon brah, whats this mess , i was sitting out in my car waiting to see how my girl looks when shes out , but she texting me, talking bout the lady is pulling and ripping her hair out, and i walk in and approach the lady nicely saying im with her and can u please be gentle , cuz her head is sensitive, but all the lady can say is she her hair wasn't combed and was natted and i can have a seat, that irritates me so much cuz i seen her pulling and ripping the hair and was like can u be more carful cuz he hair can be detangled without it hurting like hell, i was pissed af already cuz who wanna see some lady pulling and ripping your girls hair while she has obviously expressions of pain on her face the whole time????,, but my girl tells me to just have a sit, so i walk out, fast forward, i come back in about 20min later to see the Hair and its almost done but im just not impressed brah, cuz i mean look and the photo man‍. Nice staff good quality hair braiding but they will try to rob you! They will quote your price, and even if you confirm before you sit in the chair when your hair is almost complete they will quote you a higher price. Keep in mind they were doing this scheme before COVID so don't fall victim to there shady price quoting system. GOOD LUCK! read more

Not happy with my experience at all. Location was changed on me at the last minute. Style was changed. Yelp check-in discount wasn't honored. The braider left to go to the store for personal reasons and I was left in the chair for 45 minutes. No apology. Half of my braids had slid out by the three week mark. It took me well over a month, multiple calls and emails, and three trips to two different salons to get acknowledgement of the issues. I can't think of a reason I would ever return. Update: I'm absolutely in the book. I was forced to sign it before I left. The location of my appointment and the style I requested were both changed. I found first choice Hair Braiding through Yelp and decided to message the shop and schedule an appointment for the following day. Upon my arrival to the shop I was very surprised the shop was very clean nicely organized plenty of braiders there and overall just a good looking environment. They have plenty of hair colors to choose from. However be aware there is an up charge for certain hair. My braider did a wonderful job she was very quick and my hair looks fabulous I get compliments every day. The only complaint that I had is when my braider stopped doing my hair and let another braider finish the ends that was not as quick and it took a little longer. I had the worst experience EVER! After receiving 5 reminder texts about the appointment, they ran 45 minutes late. I was then told I couldn't have the style I booked for because I conditioned and moisturized my hair. I asked for medium braids and received small. I asked for mid back/top of bra and received braids to my butt (at an up charge of course). When I asked for an estimate time of completion I was told " I'm done when I'm done". No one mentioned that it was cash only until the end and OF COURSE $5 up charge for that too. Never have I dealt with such unprofessionalism, not to mention what I witnessed with other customers ( some turned away even with prescheduled appts) Save your time, money and EDGES! read more

I have been getting braids in my hair since forever. I recently moved to Maryland and decided to give this shop a try. Normally my Senegalese twist last at least 1 1/2 months. I got Senegalese twist from this shop that started falling out after about 2 weeks. Also, I had an appointment for 10am and had to wait an hour and a half to get it done. As a last minute resort, I ended up at First Choice Hair Braiding, which is ironic given the name. Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience. I showed the woman in the store the photo of the feedin braids ponytail I had previously and she said she could replicate it... this was false. I showed her multiple times throughout the braiding session and she became annoyed, telling me that she's been braiding for "30 years". Well ma'am it was not reflected in the final look. She plastered my hair with hair gel that my scalp was white which I really just don't know why she did this. Then proceeded to sew the braids together into a pony tail even though I insisted she not do so because I wanted the hair to breathe and let loose before pulling it up tight. Overall, just not a pleasant experience. I will say it was empty at the time I went (11am today) and clean. read more

The hairstyles look good when they are finished. That's the only reason they get 4 stars. A few things: First- I had 2 people working on my head, and one female was being extra rough. I was fearful that she was going to accidentally yank my edges out. 2nd- I told them I wanted the shortest length and where I wanted the braids to fall. This was also the least expensive of that style. The Hair Yanker convinced me that shortest length was too short for a ponytail, and to get the length that was $20 more. In the end, they were way too long. 3rd- There is a coupon on Yelp for 20% off for first time customers. I showed them the coupon and I had to stand there an additional 15 minutes for them to discuss the coupon, make a call, and figure out my discount. I stood there with the exact amount waiting for them to honor their coupon and figure out the discount. Geesh,,,, it was an ordeal, but at least my hair looks nice. read more

I made an appointment for 8:00 am, and Chantel started my hair around 8:15am. My mid back small brsids took about 5 hours. My hair came out amazing! Most importantly, Chantel was very gentle and the braids are not painful at all. The only disappointment is I called ahead to ask if they had two toned hair and was told yes. I've been going to this shop for years and every time I say it will be my last time but this time I really mean it! They are completely unprofessional. I had an appt at 3:00 and didn't get seated in a chair until 6:00!!! It is very obvious that they are talking about their customers in their language as they do your hair and she did my hair so tight it feels like my scalp is on fire!!! I came today at 7 am and have been waiting for almost 3 hours (still waiting as I type this review) for Senegalese twists. When I came there were 2 people ahead of me. One was seen and the other left because it took entirely too long. One stylist became available around 9:45 am. By that time there were 4 people in total waiting. I had been here the longest. Instead of the available stylist taking me, she took another lady who hadn't been here as long as me who wanted plain cornrows. I've been patient but cannot take my time being taken for granted. How is it that they open at 5...I get here at 7.... Someone is available by 9:45 and instead of taking the customers as they come in, they pick and choose who they want to service. Very unprofessional! Had a scheduled hair consultation with Cynthia. She was not there when I arrived at the time we agreed upon. The staff was not helpful, not responsive and unapologetic. After asking for her 3 times, someone finally said she was "far away" and would not be there. Again...no apology. Very frustrating.
