While it's not a bad church, it feels largely…read moreunpolished and unrefined in just about everything. --- I had come here looking for a Catholic mass near my friends place since I had been nearby. I saw the reviews and thought I would give it a try. The website said mass started at 12pm, but I came to find out that it started at 1230pm instead. There were no announcements about this on the site either, so the website was outdated. The missals passed out were also from 2014, so those are also outdated. Luckily, you can follow along on the TV screens inside. The staff and volunteers are very friendly and invited us in to take a seat, telling us mass would start at 1230pm The choir feels like they haven't practiced all that much. I'm very grateful they volunteered of course, but the singing is out of rhythm with the guitarists every time there was singing. Other times, they would occasionally sing out of tune with the guitars. I'm very rhythmically inclined so I could notice it but it may not be as obvious to others. The pastor also has a heavy Asian accent while speaking loudly and forcefully. I could make out most of what he said, but it was a bit on the difficult side, and I imagine that it could be harder for those that aren't used the the abrasive style of his speaking. They also had a video to show, but had technical difficulties getting it to play sound, which could have easily been avoided with an A/V check before the mass started. Overall, it isn't a bad church, but comparatively to other churches I've been to, they could use a lot of improvement and touch up in their mass. It has a lot of potential, and just needs to up the quality in a lot of aspects.

MY 1,000th YELP REVIEW goes to......... WHEELER AVENUE!!!…read more It feels only fitting that my 1,000 Yelp review honors a place that celebrates generations of leadership, families, and community. I had the privilege of attending Troop 242's Court of Honor at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where eight outstanding young men earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, bringing the historic troop's total to 229 Eagle Scouts. That is an achievement worth celebrating! I truly appreciated that the Court of Honor was held in the church's original sanctuary, which added a sense of history and tradition to such an important milestone. After the ceremony, everyone gathered in the event space across the parking lot to continue the celebration with family, friends, Scout leaders, and alumni's . It was wonderful catching up with members from my son's Eagle Scout class and seeing the lifelong bonds that Troop 242 continues to create. The ceremony was inspiring, filled with stories of their journeys (mainly not wanting to be a part of, or either didn't know what to expect) and appreciating their parents for giving them something they didn't know they needed, with so many life skills. From perseverance, leadership, and service to others. The reception was just as memorable. The decorative Eagle Scout-themed cookies were absolutely beautiful, almost too pretty to eat. The lunch was delicious, with both the seafood pasta and chicken pasta being the families favorites. Every detail reflected the care and prided that went into honoring these young men and their accomplishments. HISTORY FACT: 1974 is the year Scouting becomes fully racially integrated. Troop 242 is a historic Black Boy Scout troop in Houston with an extraordinary legacy of developing young leaders of character, service, and integrity; since 1967 founded by late great Rev. William A. Lawson (May 2024). Who started this troop so that Black Scouts would have a place in scouting, during an era in America where all other troops were for white scouts only. Congratulations to the newest Eagle Scouts, their families and the dedicated Scoutmasters, volunteers, and mentors who continue to invest in the next generation. Thank you, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, for providing such a beautiful and welcoming setting for this unforgettable celebration. I couldn't think of a more meaningful event to commemorate my 1,000th Yelp review.

Sunday morning mass in Houston, Texas…read more.. Searching for a nearby Catholic Church, I used my trusty Yelp app and found St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. I decided to go to the 7am service to start my day off right. Located on the corner of Buffalo Speedway and W. Holcombe Boulevard, this church has awesome stained glass windows along both sides of the church. The Stations of the Cross above the windows seem to be made of carved wood. There is an elementary school attached to this church, making the property large. The organ music during mass was peppy. There was a female soloist who led the congregation. The words to all of the songs were in a handout which parishioners could pick up at each door along with a weekly bulletin. Everyone who was eligible went up in two rows to receive the Holy Eucharist. Father's homily was a bit wordy, but passionate. He invited each family to take home a Welcome Back (to mass) Weekend Packet. It included a cool candle decorating activity. I liked the garden outside and the pathway that anyone could stroll for personal meditation. The big mosaic mural was beautiful... I should return and get a photo of it!

A warm and welcoming Presbyterian Church with an excellent music program…read more It's called the "Church of the Astronauts" because many of members have been astronauts and engineers from nearby NASA Johnson Space Center. They celebrate Lunar Communion each year on the Sunday closest to the July 21 Lunar Landing. During that Mission, Buzz Aldrin famously took communion in Space. There's a glass case in the Narthex that documents the Lunar Communion. The stained glass windows creatively depicts images of Space Nebula as seen by the Hubble Telescope. The entire church is a testament to the harmonious intersection of Science and Faith.

I sent an email to this church following the death of Charlie and that I was upset they didn't speak on this attack on Christianity and that he was one of the most out spoken Christian's known in the world. I said nothing about politics because this assassination was an attack from the devil and the anti christ. The following week (this 9 am service this Sunday) the pastor spoke about my email and decided to go off about he doesn't talk about what we want he only discuses what he feels god tells him to tell, then decided to make majority of the message about dropping your adjectives of your faith stating things such as politics and race. Which I do agree but the fact the church was dead silent because clearly your message was not good, you only had the same 3-4 front row people yelling Jesus and amen like they do each week like his little hype crew when it's quiet. When the church is quiet he makes it known we're being quiet to get the church to get louder when you should be looking at why we were quiet inside yourself. There is an attack on Christianity right now and after he talked about the email he spoke about fake Christians which is a disrespectful attack on his followers. Even some CATHOLIC churches are speaking about the attack because it's a serious attack on Christianity and our beliefs. So, overall I disgusted by this message and I will not recommend this church to anyone and will not be going back. And just so there is no argument from the church, the email was not disrespectful in any way I just stated it's an attack on our faith and was upset that they didn't even talk about it. I stated being quiet just because they don't want to lose followers. I didn't say make a whole message about Charlie, but a message about what happened should have been done due to the attack our faith is under right now. I stated nothing about my political views or my beliefs on his topics. He was a man of God and this pastor turned their back on him and that is a part of our faith. Final thing I need to say is the weekend of Charlie's death he stated he told the pastor who preached that weekend (Oscar) to not speak on it because it was the lead pastors responsibility and this was his message. A true disgrace to his so called "fake" Christians. Oh just to add a tid bit of my personal information. I've only voted once in my life so I am not a political person, I am a veteran so I defended this country and took an oath to defend this country from enemies foreign and domestic and pledged that under God. Also, I have zero social media so I have zero ties to being influenced from outside sources. So again this is as a disgrace as a church who is supposed to be followers of the lord and savior Jesus Christ. A man who was a Christian, a father, and a husband lost his life because of his religious beliefs so the church should take a stance against evil and not turn their back to it. So instead of calling some of us fake Christian's maybe you should look inside yourself and see if you're a false teacher. I have been prepared to meet the lord and savior and answers to my wrong doings, I've struggled with my faith over the years but I never turned by back to Jesus once he came into my life . Our family gave this church a shot but we realized after 7 weeks that it wasn't the one for us…read more The Connect Church has recently moved into a permanent location on Shadow Creek Parkway. Previously they rented out a school to hold their services. We loved the convenience of the Shadow Creek location. The building interior has been renovated into a modern white and black color scheme. The sanctuary is on the small side but was never jam packed, so it was still comfortable. Pastor Manne and his wife Rebecca are very welcoming and approachable. While our family seemed to be a minority at this church, we were never uncomfortable. The church seems to go out of it's way to entice newcomers to their church. Free donuts, coffee, etc. are available prior to service. Welcome gifts are given out for first time guests after service as well as an unexpected gift sent in the mail. The first Sunday of the month, a special luncheon is provided to help people learn more about their church. Clearly, money is being spent to attract new members. Unfortunately, after only 7 weeks, we realized that this church was not the right fit for us, our family and our beliefs. We wish the best for The Connect Church.
