Back in May 2012, I fell and hit my head... and my life changed forever. I struggle with the effects of a Complex Traumatic Brain Injury. C-TBI is a little bit different as it wasn't just one big hit that caused damage... it's been a bunch of accumulative hits over a lifetime. If it wasn't for the NFL talking about concussion and CTE, no one would believe me. Now one of the my life's purposes is to make others aware of the seriousness of head injuries, no matter how minuet that might seem at the moment... *NOTE* every single little hit adds up! With all this said, I stopped in to Austin Canoe & Kayak to pick up a helmet to wear on my future rafting trips... as well as any other extreme sports that might appeal to me in the future. Ha! Who am I kidding, I probably need to wear it daily around house as another hit to my head just might leave me in a veg state or kill me... that's just the reality of my life. Hey, Life is Short so gotta live it the best as I can! Austin Canoe & Kayak is located off IH 10 off De Zavala a few blocks in a strip shopping area in NW SA. The owner, Ed, was the person who worked with us. He asked us questions which helped narrow down what he felt would work for us. He spent a lot of time showing us different options on guns and explained the benefits and downsides of each firearm. We never felt pressured or pushed to hurry a decision. When we decided to leave we indicated he had given us a lot of things to think about. He thanked us for coming in and said he hoped when we were ready to purchase we would come back. We had a great time and I went away feeling this is one of the few public courses I've played where I had a mid-level country club experience albeit at a public course. Very nice, clean, well maintained facilities. Air conditioned restrooms at the clubhouse, one on each nine and one at the turn (including the well stocked snack bar). Great hill country feeling with beautiful views, very tame deer and fairways lined with some beautiful homes. Fairways had good grass for just coming out of dormancy. The greens were quite large and long. Good quality grass although a little sparse, creating very fast speed and some difficulty in getting the ball to stop on putts and approaches. Experience and local knowledge gained this trip will be a big help for future rounds. Very large driving range with artificial turf and Top Tracer access. Nice practice putting green. Two VERY large longhorn steers in a small corral adorned the first tee/ninth fairway adjacent to the snack bar at the turn. All the staff and marshals were very friendly and helpful. The cart girls had great personalities, were very helpful and made the rounds regularly. Full bar and lots of cold beverages on board. Very fair prices for refreshments. The only thing missing was ball washers but not a huge deal. Good value for money, especially if you sign up for one of their discount programs. I look forward to returning soon!
