This place is fly! The Tackle Box Outfitters is a fly fishing store in Alamo Heights, Texas. It's been around forever. They have a big selection of pre-tied flies, in case you're too busy to tie your own flies. Their prices are pretty astronomical. Seriously, miles high. But fly fishing isn't a cheap-o hobby either. They have all the accessories you could possibly need for a fly fishing expedition, including the rods, reels, luggage to pack 'em in, clothes to wear, waders, and so on. A lot of their equipment seems intended for much cooler waters than you find around South Texas. I can't imagine wearing waders in most of the rivers in Texas! They don't really cater to the coastal or lake fishermen. The staff was pretty aloof, but was present. They quickly helped a guy get his fishing and hunting license, and they even offer duck stamps! This fishing store is a go-to place for your Yeti cooler needs. They have a huge selection in a variety of colors. Parking is easy- it's right on the end cap of the Sunset Ridge shopping center, across from the Twin Sisters restaurant. read more

Horrible customer service. I attempted to return a T-shirt (Christmas gift). They staff stated that they could not take a return if it was a sale item. I guess assuming that I only purchased sale items. The shirt was a gift and purchased at full price. The staff then stated; "well the shirt went on sale after Christmas so we can't take it back". I asked for at least a store credit. Again denied. "Can't take it back, no returns no store credit". I love to support local businesses but this is ridiculous and horrible customer service. They lost a customer and I hope this note prevents serves as a warning to other potential customers. read more

Excellent store that carries a nice assortment of fly gear, apparel and other accessories. The staff has always been super helpful when I've asked for it and when offered to help out when I had my little one with me and he was being a handful. They have an excellent assortment of pre-tied flies in case you need some and carry all of the Simms gear which is great! Highly suggest checking them out. read more

I am so so new to fly Fishing and getting ready to go on a trip to Vermont so we went in to look around for clothing options. Not only do they have an amazing selection and very well priced but while we were there the team member came up and gave me all sorts of quick and easy to remember fly fishing tips for wade fishing. I'm not entirely sure why this place has such bad reviews, maybe some of them are slightly outdated. However, when I came in I walked straight back to the flies to look for some nymphs. Older gentleman walked back and followed me as I went back there. He asked if I needed help and I asked for his advice on some nymphs. He was very knowledgeable and told me to go ahead and get a cup and pointed out each fly for me and recommended sizes. Prices were fairly expensive however you definitely get what you pay. Customer service was a lot better than what the other reviews state and this place has definitely changed. read more

As others have said before, this place has terrible customer service. There were 3 or 4 people working and all of them were cold and unhelpful. It's worth driving to Gruene to get amazing customer service for the exact same products (and cheaper in some cases)! read more

I really don't understand how this place has had such poor reviews. We are lucky to have a dedicated fly shop in San Antonio, a city not very supportive of the sport. I have found the staff to be friendly and attentive when ever I have visited which at this point has been numerous times. The prices match online prices on most of their gear. So why pay for shipping and have to wait when you can shop and support a local independent business? Also if you have any technical questions, Bruce is a fountain of knowledge. In my quest to learn more about fly fishing, Bruce has been of great help from gear selection, to fly choice theory, even some casting advice. I purchased a new rod online and Bruce helped me for close to an hour in order to chose the best matching line. He let me cast several shop reels with different lines to find the right one. Let's see Amazon, or one of the big box stores do that for you! The only thing keeping me from giving them a 5 star rating is that they do have their limits. They close by 6 which doesn't allow me to catch them open on weekdays. Also I've been bummed to find common flies out of stock on a couple of visits. Overall this is a great store with very helpful staff and a great selection of gear. read more

The basic formula for any fly shop to survive today is 70+% women's accessories and all fishing and outdoor hardware relegated to that last under 30% of floorspace and inventory. Tackle Box is no exception to this survival rule. If it's the small stuff that interests you, you'll find it here. Bruce runs one of the last fly shops that still offers fly tying supplies - whatever you need, he probably has it - Partridge sproat hook - and if he doesn't have it, he'll get it. Bruce is also a great fisherman, a great choice for a guide, and a good friend to all. read more

Nice selection of very nice items. Prices are average. Customer service is poor. The ladies in the front of the store were extremely cold and barley spoke to us. It was evident that they ignored us. The gentlemen in the back was very knowledgeable, kind and engaging. they ladies should learn from him. As we walked to our vehicle -- we caught them looking out to see what car we got into. Left a terrible taste in my mouth. Additionally, they wont issue a cash refund for my $300 purchase. Will never return or recommend. read more

In this day and age, why in the world would you hire a sales associate with the personality of a tire? I hate going in this store and being treated like an asshole. When I am obviously buying things for someone other than myself how about your offer me your free gift wrapping and Don't suggest I shove every item in one box.
